Sunday roast was best I have enjoyed for a long time. Fabulous English country pub with rooms. Staff are amazing, such a professional team, all so good at there work. Small bar, yet never waited for a drink...make sure you book! This place has a large restaurant yet gets fully booked at weekends. Plenty of parking. And lots of rooms in a stable yard set up down a very steep hill. Very nice garden terrace at the back of the pub.

Belated birthday and anniversary meal. Food was fantastic from starter to main. Fantastic quality reasonably priced will definitely return!

From the staff to the decor to the food to the location, this absolute diamond of a place could not be faulted. It is clearly one of the best places to visit for a casual meal. The staff were exceptional, extremely welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly without being “over the top”. The food was fantastic, and at no time did we feel rushed. The only unfortunate thing is that we didn’t have room for a dessert because the cheesecake on the “specials” board looked very inviting. If you’re trying to impress a date, business colleague or family member, then this is the place to go. I have been here a few times and this place never ceases to amaze and impress me.

I live locally to this restaurant and quite often walk the dogs here. It is a very dog friendly venue. You can't take dogs into the restaurant area, they have a loft which is ideal for dogs and has a few tables. Dogs are also welcome in the bar area (also has a few tables). The service can be slow, depending on how busy they are so allow a couple of hours for lunch (unless it’s just a sandwich and a pint in the bar area). They don't have an extensive wine list but the wines they have are all pretty good and I highly recommend the Sancerre. The menu is varied and some of the dishes are always good (Ceasar salad and Prawn Cocktail) . There is something for everyone on the menu. The steaks are a bit pricey (over £40) but generally good quality. In addition to the normal pub grub, they have small dishes, healthy options and sandwiches so lunch need not be expensive. If you really want to treat yourself then get a reservation in the restaurant for Sunday lunch and have a roast, the portions are big, it's all beautifully cooked (I'm a massive fan). The staff are all nice, polite and easy to speak to. My favourite location in the restaurant is in front of you as you walk past the bar, it's a small area that has 4 tables (two 4's and two 2's). The table for 4 in the right corner next to the encyclopaedia’s is the best for a spot of people watching and has a padded bench on one side which is handy if you bring a child.

We went for a Sunday lunch. Very busy pub but so efficient. Full of character. Drinks and food served by lovely staff. The roast lunches were very good. The sea bream, exceptional. Prices were average for a dining pub. Dog friendly. Highly recommended

Definitely will be returning ! After calling up last minute requesting a fairly large table the lady on the phone was able to find a spot for us all ! It was so beautiful and had a traditional pub interior so it felt so inviting ! We had a few dietary requirements and were very understanding to this too ! Overall was a wonderful experience !

Visited for Sunday lunch, this place is popular, the only table available was 12.15. Early for Sunday lunch but my own fault for not booking earlier. We were greeted with a warm welcome and having ordered drinks were shown to our table. Didn't even have to ask to add the drinks to our tab. Ordred starters and mains. When our starters arrived they weren't piping hot. I brought this to the attention of staff, without fuss they remade them and apologised. I have to say that was the only negative. The food was delightful, well cooked and plentiful in size ( I ordered extra roasties, I didn't need to). Topped off the roast with the Pear and Rosemary tart au tain ( sounds so wrong, but oh my god so right) . All in all a fantastic meal with really lovely friendly service, will definitely be returning.

This bar, restaurant accommodation is one of a dying breed. Staff are so friendly, professional and attentive. After turning up with a 6m motorhome and two Great Danes they couldn’t have been more helpful. The owner guided us into a parking area and the staff gave us an area in bar where the dogs would have room . The food is excellent and the bar had the most beautiful old world ambience. We have used this as our first and last stop in uk when crossing the tunnel . Great place

Terrible communication! Emailed to ask if they can cater for a garlic allergy for a booking we have at the weekend. The response was a flat no despite giving them a weeks notice! Shocking response. Total lack of appreciation for allergies. Apparently the head chef uses garlic all the time for all dishes! Avoid here if you have an allergy as they cannot or will not accomodate!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the food was delicious and filling. It's a lovely pub that is outstanding in terms of atmosphere and decor....lots of genuine character and the staff are very welcoming. It was busy which is a great sign to recommend that you visit. We definately will return soon as we had a relaxing visit.

We had the most fabulous meal here tonight for our anniversary. Lovely cosy eating areas, good service and worth every penny. The pan roasted chicken with cream sauce was just perfect as was my husbands fillet steak. We have eaten here many times over the years and it has never disappointed us. Many Thanks.

SAME AS MOST PUBS IN KENT No seasonal vegetables. If you have a stack you get the same old large Mushroom and one slice of a tomato with a few chips what crap get a Chef who can cook not a pot washer made a cook

This is a beautiful 18 century pub with what looks like many original features. Beautiful cosy interior. The staff are welcoming and provide excellent service. The food is great with generous portions. If you want a pub you would br happy to get locked in by a snow storm, this it. Well worth a visit.

We visited as a large group for a birthday and have been here several times before. We were extremely disappointing with both the service and the food. The service was very slow. We arrived at 3.30 and didn’t leave until after 7!! We also were told after we ordered that there was not enough beef for everyone that had ordered so had to change our order. We were given the excuse that there was another large party for the slow service but we had called up to make the booking weeks before so they should have been prepared. Again with desserts there was limited options and a long wait. The roast dinners were not enjoyable at all, very bland potatoes and chewy meat. We unfortunately will not be returning any time soon.

we were given a limited time in the restaurant and so after good service and average food we found an unoccupied table in the bar to enjoy some after sunday roast drinks. We were at this table 5 minutes when a waitress appeared with a small blackboard placed on our table saying it was reserved from 6pm. It was 4.30pm at this point so no worries. As we thought we had till 6pm, we ordered another round of drinks and at 4.45pm another waitress appeared with a second blackboard for our table saying it was reserved from 5pm !!! We gulped down our drinks to then discover this table WAS NOT RESERVED FOR ANOTHER CUSTOMER BUT FOR THE OWNER !! So just to clarify - the PAYING CUSTOMER has to move to make room for the OWNER !! We were offered alternative seats - so again to clarify the CUSTOMER has to move tables to accommodate the OWNER'S preference !! We LEFT !! Visit the Black Horse to play musical chairs according to the OWNERS rules!!

Waitress didn’t put starters through and didn’t apologise for this just gave us the option to have started with our main which obviously isn’t what we wanted. So we had to say no to the starters so we could get our roast. No one came Over to ask of roast was okay or if we wanted another drink or needed anything else. And enough veg for 4 people. After this terrible service we went elsewhere for dessert. Defo won’t be returning. They didn’t seem to care or offer us an alternative.

Stayed here for 2 weeks but felt at home straight away. The rooms are are lovely and clean and a very reasonable price. Had breakfast and dinner everyday in the onsite pub and there was a brilliant range of food ended up trying a bit of everything and don't have a single complaint. All of the staff are lovely, my dogs never had so much attention! Big thankyou to John and the team will definitely be returning for a weekend away with the missus.

I have been going to the Black Horse for over 25 years, a few friends recently said it was not as good as it used to be but we couldn’t quite believe this, until this evening that is when it became quite clear this was actually the case. Service was average, quite childish behaviour going on at times between certain staff who seemed somewhat over excited and very blasé. When reminding a member of staff on a very quiet evening about the drink I had ordered 15 mins previously I was told “Oh don't panic it’s coming.” The food was however the biggest disappointment. Very poor quality on this occasion, a bland uninspiring and somewhat limp looking caesar salad as if it had been removed from a leftover plate, reeking of anchovy residue when we particularly requested no anchovies (as If they had been removed them as an afterthought) soggy croutons saturated in oil, a very fatty piece of chewy steak (listed as ribeye) chips and onion rings also completely saturated in oil. Desert was evening poorer, warm cheesecake with bland unsweetened gooey cream that tasted like it had been sat in the sun with an awful bitter sorbet that made us wince and left a horrible aftertaste. Miniature standard pub grub sticky toffee pudding. No more than I would expect from a run of the mill pub grub/microwave outfit but at a much higher price. Bitter cheap coffee with spoons that are too short to stir your sugar at the bottom. The decor hasn’t changed in the 25 years i’ve been been going in there and nor has the cleaners eyesight improved, cobwebs and dust now decorate the heavily worn furniture in parts. Disappointed to say the least, it seems maybe the venue has finally lost its edge after all these years, staff are certainly not as conscientious as there predecessors, it seems to have become to commercialised. A shame to see this go down hill.

Lovley quirky pub/restaurant, feels very relaxed with friendly service. Food is of a good standard and i felt was reasonably priced. Would recommend for a nice relaxed evening out.

Really enjoyed our time here. Visiting friends in Detling. Had a blast eating and drinking here. Hiking was great too. Rooms were clean but basic. What you should expect in a simple country inn. Will be back for sure.

Went here for a meal for my birthday with family. Such a quaint pub in the center of the village. Decorated beautifully and I loved all the little touches. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble :) They let us take our time, which was a bonus seeing as we had a 9 month old with us also. The food was sooo good. Great portion sizes and the burger was so flavourful. The chunky chips were the best I've ever had (I'm not keen on them normally as I love a french fries ha!) For dessert I had sticky toffee pudding - what can I say...stunning! Would highly recommend to anyone, looking forward to visiting again soon and taking advantage on the inn so over the car park :)

Great overnight stay en route to France. Lovely big clean rooms, with parking right outside. Dinner was excellent. Extensive menu, with delightful specials. Had the calves liver which was superb. My wife had ham, egg and chips. The chips are wonderful - crispy outside, fluffy inside. Good local beers and decent wine list. The pub has a lovely homely feel, lovely nooks and crannies. Dog friendly, people friendly, overall a great experience.

A cozy bar for a glass of rose, followed by a delicious dinner, very well served and with excellent advice on choice of pudding.

We are regular visitors to the Black Horse Inn and brought friends down for an overnight stay. The food and service was exceptional, as always. Our friends now love the pub as much as we do. They loved the rooms and the convenience it brings for a quick night away from the noise and bustle of life in London. Mikayla and the team always make you feel very welcome and comfortable and do as much as they can to make your stay stress free. Thank you and see you again soon!

Great pub in picturesque kent countryside. We booked for evening dinner and had a fantastic meal. Thoroughly recommend the homemade scotch egg as a starter. It was served hot but still with a runny yolk and was delicious. Strangely it's not on the starters menu but turn the page and it's with the small bites. The menu has a good selection, along with daily specials written on chalk boards. We plumped for the lamb shank meal served with garlic mash, baby vegetables with a red wine jus. The lamb fell from the bone, was moist and flavoursome. The rum baba with mango and coconut sorbet finished off nicely. There is an extensive selection of beers and local ales and a good wine list. We opted for a bottle of the local kent vinyards white Bacchuss 2022 and it was superb. The service was very good and all of the staff were pleasant and attentive. We had a great experience on this occasion and will definitely be coming back for more.

We were here for 6 nights. The B&B was fine but basic. The freshly cooked breakfast was great and nice. We loved the atmosphere and felt at home.

Wie das Hotel im selben Haus ist auch das Restaurant erstklassig. Architektonisch gleicht der Pub einem Labyrinth und das macht auch einen guten Teil seines Charms aus. An jeder Stelle ist es gemütlich, einladend und einfach tipptopp. Das Personal war super freundlich. Und das Essen war einfach lecker, zum Teil richtig gelungene neue Interpretationen von traditionellen Speisen: besonders zu empfehlen ist das Pulled Pork im Risotto (könnte ich sofort wieder essen!) . Alles schien handgemacht, perfekt gewürzt und nett angerichtet. Wir kommen, wenn sich die Gelegenheit bietet, auf jeden Fall wieder.

Nicest pub I’ve ever been in it’s amazing. Food was really good and staff really friendly. The outside seating is fabulous, unfortunately it was raining so we couldn’t sit outside. The pictures don’t do it justice. Was on holiday wish this pub was in my village where I live.

A proper Kentish pub - good honest friendly service, excellent food, - My duck was perfectly cooked and so was the Monk Fish, well done Chef and as for the Chocolate Fondant and Sticky Toffee puddings were out of this world... clever chefs, wow - we really appreciated the desserts, its finished off a beautiful lunch - big thanks to all the team!! We were staying in the rooms at the Inn and wanted dinner at the restaurant. It was a Tuesday evening and there were lots of people at the inn! Service was great and our servers answered all our enquires with great enthusiasm. Lots on the menu and a couple of specials. I started with the scallops and black pudding crumb, delicious. My wife and I both had the Guinea fowl and it was fantastic, juicy, tender and full of flavour. A side salad and a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio went well with it.
