Excellent Service, friendly staff. Good varied choice. All our meals were excellent, served promptly and all nice and hot.

Mum chose to eat at The Black Horse for her birthday and we were not disappointed. I’ve not visited for years and it’s now somewhere I will be going back to. There was a good choice on the menu for everyone, including vegetarian, all freshly cooked and really tasty. Mum has mobility issues and walks with a wheeled walker and she had no problems getting in as the door through the function room can be opened.

My husband and I visited this Lovely old Pub today for lunch we both decided on the beer battered fish fingers on ciabatta with homemade tartare sauce and chips, This is probably one of the best ever fish finger butty either of us have had and also a very reasonable price and would definitely go back and eat there again

Visited on a Friday lunch time- was apprehensive as couldn’t find a menu online. Great selection of food (plenty of veggie options and kids meals too). Generous portions, reasonably priced, lovely atmosphere and rapid service. Would definitely visit again. Easy parking, great for people visiting the local Peak District

Staying locally and popped in for an evening meal. Food very good and staff also very pleasant and friendly. Decent prices for the meal and well worth a visit.

Stopped off here for Sunday lunch. Had the roast beef followed by the bakewell pudding both were delicious. They have a lovely varied menu. The staff are so welcoming and friendly and the service is excellent. Myself and my dog really enjoyed our visit. Thank you 😊

We called here while staying at Poplars farm cottage for our evening meal. We were able to take our dogs which was great (in the bar area), although it was a bit rowdy for them, but we can’t blame the pub for that! The girl that served us was very pleasant and polite and the food was excellent, home cooked a piping hot. We had the peppered steak and cheese wrap with salad, coleslaw and home made chips and it was all really good. So good that I took home what I couldn’t manage because it was too good to leave! The chips reminded me of the sort my dad used to make in a chip pan when I was little, really nice and brown. We thought it was good value and if we were staying longer we would go back again without the dogs so that we can sit in the restaurant where it seemed quieter.

Nice traditional pub with ample off street parking.Theres a decent choice of well kept beers,and a good choice of food.The staff were friendly,helpful and efficient.The meals were very good and were served quickly.All in all a good experience.

I hadn’t visited this place for many years, even though I’m local. Went as a family and I was really happy with the appearance inside of the place, the decor was excellent & the food looked and tasted delicious. Everything home made & presented beautifully. I shall be back 👍

Very disappointing. Menu mixed up with old menu so my husband and I had 2 different menus. The food was bland and uninspiring. A few peas with the scampi...not even a salad or choice of vegetables. Our table was in a dingy corner with one of the lights above broken. The menu looked nothing like the one seen on the website. Overpriced bland food. Beer was good however.

Perfect from start to finish! Mushroom starter and brandy snap pud were divine! Stunning main. Family owned business who are really lovely and mum is an amazing cook! Well done and big Thanku for making everything so special. My niece and her partner (first timers) said it was the best lunch they had had! I have been coming here for the last 5 years and it is my go-to place for quality, value, and location.

Was meant to be visiting somewhere else close by but was closed so phoned up to reserve a table while on the way, they phoned straight back as the phone single was sketchy. When arriving was shown to the table and placed our order, food arrived pretty quickly and was well presented, I had a Brie and bacon burger which was to die for and my friend had a bbq Mexican tortilla wrap which again was delicious. Highly recommend the food here, decent prices and freshly cooked to perfection.

We wanted a team night out, which was local. I regularly come here so I recommended it to the team and they all loved it. The food was great and the staff were friendly as always. Visited on Saturday night - drinks served promptly and shown to table to peruse the menu which was quite comprehensive. Order taken and short wait for starters. The prawn cocktail was very generous and tasty. The whitebait hearty. Two had the homemade steak & ale pie, chips and peas for main - both said it was absolutely delicious, best pie they had had for ages! I had the scampi & prawns, chips & asked for ‘mushy’ peas which they did, very tasty and good sized portion, home made chips! We couldn’t manage a pudding but saw some being served to other tables and definitely will save some room for next time! Two coffees to finish off and a reasonable bill. The young man that served us was pleasant and efficient. A ‘go to’ for decent pub grub.

Nice pub with an excellent choice of drinks at the bar and a good menu.The staff are friendly,helpful and efficient.There is ample off street car parking with good access to the premises.The meal was excellent and was served quickly.All in all a nice experience.

Friendly staff welcomed us and gave us advice on the menu which was larger than I expected. We chose the lasagne and the pork burger. Both were excellent and very tasty. The chips were also the kind your mum used to make if you were lucky, chunky, fluffy on the inside and crisp outers. Even the coleslaw was homemade. They have a small but adequate wine choice and the ale is bass with a guest beet. It was blue monkey infinity and was kept nicely. We will happily return for another meal here.

The food was average. I had steak ale pie, son had gammon and grandson had chicken burger. The service was in fact less than average. The service was slow. We had sat down for 15 minutes before anybody came to see us. The waitress said the right things whilst managing to look unimpressed with everything and this was conveyed towards us. We ordered mains and they took another 35 minutes. This was a Tuesday and not that busy so I suppose try were understaffed. I’m afraid we had tried several establishments and this was the only serving food so not a lot of choice around here.

A village pub, easily accessed by a short walk on local roads from the campsite we used (Poplars Farm). Torches needed if walked at night. We walked in, and were warmly welcomed by locals and the bar staff. Sometimes when you walk into a village...

Warm cosy welcoming pub track and trace on entry and then go through door to a pub with wooden beams and warm environment 2 ladies one behind bar and the other out front welcoming and professional Roast beef dinner ordered all food fresh produce and very tasty and cooked to high standard Kids had kids meal with ice cream included ate every bit of it. Last day glamping so treated ourselves to a pub meal, the food was beautiful... definitely reccomend, have safety in regards covid 19 in place. Staff also friendly will be coming again soon x

The staff were very welcoming, polite and friendly; the environment, clean and inviting. We were shown to our table and given the menus, after having been served drinks.I chose the roast beef (well it was a Sunday), my wife had the Texan Chicken.My plate, when it came, was full of very tasty and well cooked meat and veg. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, lots of bite left, and well seasoned. The spuds (deep fried, I think, not roasted) were also nicely cooked and flavoursome.The beef, was plentiful, beautifully tender, and also very tasty.My wife was equally impressed with her Texan Chicken, (and she liked my Cauliflower cheese - she finished mine off!).I couldn't eat anymore.in truth, I couldn't finish what I'd been served, there was so much. My wife had a chocolate fudge cake, with ice cream, equally enjoyable!As the lunch went on the large room we were seated in slowly filled up, showing it's popularity - a very well deserved popularity! And it's very reasonably priced too.

A group of 15 of us were in the area for the weekend and came to the Black Horse Inn. Great priced food and drinks and a nice environment to have some drinks and play some games. The lady running the pub is really lovely and went out her way to make us feel welcome.

Walked here from a nearby campsite (along unlit roads) but a welcoming pub with a good choice of beer and a lovely menu. Enjoyed one of the best pub meals for a long time, nice to see non standard ’pub grub’ on a menu. Good ambience and seemed popular.

Popped in for a bite on our way home from Carsington Water. It’s a lovely pub inside, lots of food options including a separate gluten free menu, they served the most amazing home cooked chips ever and the toilets were very nice too! Plenty of parking. Venue for a family wake. Olde worlde pub with several rooms, probably the best around for catering for substantial numbers. Very cosy,friendly and with a superb buffet laid on for our party of up to 120 people. There had been a choice of three price levels for the buffet- ours was the middle one, it was BEAUTIFUL .Ample food, in fact so much it was wrapped and given to the family, Sliced fresh ham, beef , quiches, pasta and a great selection of cakes etc for the sweet toothed. Excellent!

We called in at The Black Horse on our way through to Carsington Water. We received a warm welcome. There is a varied menu and we selected the hot dog and a selection of burgers. Not too long to wait for the food and it was delicious. Proper homemade food, well presented and generous in portion size. We are so pleased we didn't drive past as we had a lovely meal in pleasant clean surroundings. We wish we lived closer as we would definitely be regulars!

We were camping at the nearby Poplars Farm and this was the closest pub with food as we wanted to walk decided that was the one for us. Great decision the staff were great really helpful, friendly and customer focussed. Our web be saved dog was made welcome and one of the locals even knew they had dog biscuits as treats hidden away which were well received by our dog after his long walk. the food was good and well priced. We had great meals well presented, hot, and easy with fresh vegetables. The waitress was good and the service quick and efficient. We were so happy we went back the next night oh and well priced too. Thanks for making us so welcome

We rang up last minute to see if they had space to fit me, my husband and his brother and wife one saturday night, which they made happen and we were there and sat at a table within an hour. Staff and the atmosphere were great and the food was amazing for all four of us! I cant have dairy and they catered for my needs brilliantly and i never felt i was being a pain especially when they were busy.Couldnt recommend more... Another great night out thank you!!

Just dropped in one Saturday after regularly frequented three years. Arrived 6.35 ordered drink asked if there was availability for food. We were told yes but there was a long wait. Sat down and waited an hour and fifteen minutes. Another couple came into the room after us and their meal arrived fairly swiftly. After one hour and fifteen minutes went up to the bar and the bar staff asked us if we were alright.We said well we haven't had any food yet. It was pointed out that a couple who came in after us had finished their main course. Bar staff said it was because they were resident and had booked. Clearly Saturday night is not the night to drop in expecting quick service.

Went here based purely on TripAdvisor reviews, and its times like this that I love TripAdvisor, as I would probably have driven past and missed the best chips I have ever had in a pub!!!!

On return home we dropped this pub today as the car park was large and enabled us to park our motorhome. Service was superb. Initially the bar lady following a request from my wife to swap chips for crisps said no. However she pursued the kitchen on our behalf and what came out was wonderful food including the swap from sweet potato chips to crisps. My mother had fish cakes and they were superb. Service very friendly and helpful and bettered our first thoughts when walking from car park to pub by loads. We sat in the garden in lovely sunshine with a view of the Derbyshire vales. Good lunch had by all

Popped in for a late lunch, was just passing so didn’t really know what to expect but was extremely pleased to find such a warm welcome, fantastic food and lovely clean homely feel !!! We had our 3 year old son Lucas with us and the lady could not have been nicer and accommodating for Lucas. Cannot fault this place and we are going to try and come back soon!!! P.s the toilets were spotless too!!

Popped in for lunch with hubby and friends. Food was amazing, couldn’t fault it. Freshly cooked- not processed pre- bought. I would definitely recommend and come here again!

Great food,fresh and tasty (roast). A good selection both on the main menu and ‘specials’ menu. Clean and tidy with a choice of local derbyshire beers. Also a good sized car park. Well worth a visit.

Stopped in for lunch and had a great meal. The decor has clearly been refreshed not too long ago and was lovely with a nice feel to the place. The food was well presented and an excellent selection was available on the menu. My only concern was the size of the portions - too much of our food was left and had to be thrown away which is a big waste. Perhaps an option of small portions (two fishcakes would have been ample - three was excessive for many people) might reduce the food wastage.

We have just returned from a meal with friends at the Black Horse and yet again had an excellent meal.

We ate here on two consecutive nights with a large group of friends and we weren’t disappointed.

We arrived at the Black Horse after a busy day seeing the sights of Derbyshire so we were both ready for a pint and decent food. The staff were incredibly friendly and chatted to us on and off through out the night along with the locals. Food here is very good, hearty and just whats needed after a busy day. Booze very reasonable priced and a fair amount on offer. Highlight of the two days was coming into the Black Horse for an hour or two to sit relax and enjoy. Would highly recommend!!

Party of 6 was greeted warmly. On viewing the main and specials menu it was very difficult to choose as there was so much choice. We was not disappointed in the choices made. Homemade chips and fresh produce. Even though the waitress was busy she still had a chat with us. The prices are very reasonable and quantities plentiful. We will definitely go again.

We really enjoyed our evening in the Black Horse. The staff were very friendly and it is obviously well-supported by local people. We both decided to have three courses: service was very prompt and everything we chose was excellent.

Stayed nearby in our touring caravan and enjoyed a superb meal here . The quantity and the quality are wonderful as are the staff . Very helpful with the menu as my wife is vegetarian and there is more than enough items to suit all .

Fantastic food, great staff, lovely big beer garden, visited at the weekend and there was a Viking re-enactment, which was very interesting. Three courses and they was all great.

We visit here as a family or as a couple on date night and we love it. Can't fault any of it. All food is home made and the Wheeldon family are so welcoming. Will be returning again and again and again VERY soon.

We were camping at the farm about 10 minutes walk away and came here two nights in a row. The locals and staff were very friendly and the food was reasonably priced and tasty.

After a long day travelling we needed a good meal - Black Horse is right next door to the Wheel House B&B; where we were staying. We did not book in advance and were seated no problem (but they recommend booking in case they get busy). I had the pork burger (a nice variation on a normal burger, with apple & black pudding in the mix) - I was full having eaten it, certainly didn't need a dessert! My companion had a steak & ale pie which had a generous amount of meat. Service was friendly and reasonably prompt. Prices were acceptable, too.

We tend to call in with the dog for lunch after a walk and we aways get a very friendly welcome and enjoy the food from either the lunchtime lighter bites menu or the main menu which is always varied and interesting.

Popped in for another excellent lunch. The raspberry tart was a real highlight with pouring cream.

My husband and I visited for a Friday evening meal. We hadn’t visited in almost 15 years when we’d had an awful meal and had vowed to never go back again! However, after reading recent reviews and always seeing the car park busy we thought we’d give it another try. The place is now under new ownership and we couldn’t fault a thing. It’s been nicely decorated with a good selection of drinks and the food was absolutely beautifully cooked. I had tempura prawns to start off with and the batter was cooked to perfection, melting in the mouth and my husband had the prawn and crayfish cocktail which he thoroughly enjoyed. I then chose the lasagne which was beautiful and came with the most amazingly tasty chips and lovely homemade coleslaw and salad, very filling. My husband had the steak and ale pie topped with puff pastry which came with lashings of gravy and again those extra tasty chips and peas. He said the quality of the meat was perfect and just fell apart. So all in all no complaints whatsoever and we’ll definitely be coming back, the bill at the end was also a very nice surprise taking into account we’d had starters, main courses and two drinks each! What’s not to like?! Try it, you won’t be disappointed!

Recently celebrated my 50th Birthday here , Staff were simply wonderful ,and the buffet provided was excellent . Stay overnight in one of the Rooms very comfortable and again served a fantastic and varied breakfast that was cooked to perfection .
