After a walk around Harewood, we fancied a nice Sunday lunch in Otley and couldn't have found a better place. We both opted for the roast beef and it was amazing. Slow cooked beef brisket with veg and Yorkshire pudding. One of the best pieces of beef I've ever had and everything else around it was perfect. The bar staff were also very welcoming and offered me a sample of the ale first before I ordered a full pint. Overall, great food, great staff and great surroundings.

We were on holiday in England and called in here on the way back to Leeds/Bradford airport. The burgers we had were great, well cooked and tasty. The hand pulled beer from Kirkstall brewery was excellent and obviously well kept. Star of the show was the young woman behind the bar (blonde hair with spectacles). She was absolutely great, smiley, warm, friendly and a great ambassador for the pub. We will certainly visit again and I recommend it if you want fresh food, well presented and a decent pint.

We asked to speak to the manageress this evening when one of our 3 meals didn't arrive and my wife ended up eating alone. We had already finished when her meal arrived. Not a perfect evening. The waitress was apologetic and friendly but nevertheless, we thought some sort of gesture from the manageress would have been appropriate. The waitress informed the manageress and told us she would come to speak to us. We heard later in the evening that the manageress didn't want to speak to us and just went home. What a great attitude. Hardly professional and certainly not client friendly. As a result a very small issue has become a matter of principle and a large insult to us. With this type of management quality I fear this pub with have a short future.

Came to Otley to see a band & had a couple of hours to spare so called in for a drink & something to eat. Was told that they had stopped serving food because they had a private function on,so just ordered a pint. However,no sooner had I got my pint,a member of staff kindly said the cook would do me something ! Had a burger & proper chips & it was fantastic. The beer is excellent & the staff are so friendly & helpful,I cannot recommend this place highly enough. If you ever find yourself in Otley,go there !!!

We visited to have an early evening meal, having seen the variety of dishes on the website. Sadly the menu offered was very basic, with hardly any of the dishes on the website - it was essentially just 'take-away' food. There was little apology from the bar staff - we had already bought our drinks before seeing the menu (we would have not ordered if we had realised how the poor the offering was). Also very poor attention to Covid precautions - no contact details taken, our table had not been cleaned since he ast occupants, and we didn't see any cleaning taking place while we drunk our drinks. This is stark contrast to our previous visit where the Covid precautions seemed to be taken very seriously.

We were recommended the black horse by the lovely gentleman in the curious hop (worth a visit if you are are into your craft beers and ciders) and we were glad we listened. Great choice of beers with knowledgeable and friendly bar staff who were also happy to house our dog. The place was warm and cosy with an open fire roaring. I ordered fish and chips, the hubby ordered one of the burgers and both were large portions and delicious. The coffe (latte) was also a really good cuppa. We would definitely return here for food and drink.

We had a meal for four of us. Could not have first choice of meal as I did not want anchovies and the salad was pre-prepared . that seemed strange . Normally you could ask for an ingredient to be not included.. would be vefry poor for an allergy not to be catered for ? the meal was good however . There was no dairy alternative for coffee and the staff member i asked could not find any orange juice but later another staff member found some . That was odd too. The place was clean and warm and friendly . The toilets were also clean. All in all we enjoyed the food and had a good experience .

We have previously eaten at the newly refurbished Black Horse, and decided to take my Mum and Dad and our four year old daughter. The pub had clearly enjoyed a sunny Bank Holiday weekend, as had a limited menu. However, I was pleased that they had the fish and chips for myself and my daughter which we had before. On arrival the food looked good, but after my first bite I knew something wasn't right, the smell of the fish was similar to that of dog/cat food, my young daughters smelt the same also. Both meals sent back and the staff took some convincing to do anything more than not charge us for the meals themselves. We won't ever be returning to this pub, which could have led to food poisoning of a child.

Pub was appealing inside & service was good. Food was ok but traditional pub fare with not much to offer for other tastes. Tried the lasagne which looked appealing but was bland with chewy pasta & salad limp from heat of lasagne bowl. Companions enjoyed their traditional pub fare - fish & chips - gammon steak. Overall a nice quiet old pub.

There was a group of 11. Some had the 'Pie of the day', some of us had burgers of varying kinds, some of us had fish. The pies were done like little pastry tubs with lids and well filled with meat, the burgers were very nice - proper meaty flavour, with good accompaniments too, very good onion rings. What can I say - nothing too adventurous but well cooked tasty food, that all arrived in good time and together more or less. Would definitely recommend this.

Stayed for two nights with dog which is why we chose this hotel. Great friendly welcome by lad on reception who was busy serving at the bar and waiting tables. Despite being an hour early he showed us to our room quickly and efficiently (room no. 9). Room was basic but clean with nicely refitted bathroom (tiny but adequate). Could do with a shelf in the shower, towel rail in bathroom and a mirror near a socket in the bedroom, complimentary toletries etc very nice. Had lunch here which was good pub food. I have had 2 parties now at the black horse and each one has been outstanding. One was a christening and the oher a suprise party. It was well organised and the buffet was well worth the price paid, they catered well for the dietry needs of the guests (including children). The staff were extremely helpful and went above and beyond their duties to make sure both events were as stress free for me as they could be. I supplied the decorations both times and the staff decorated the room for me. The smallest of requests were met with no trouble at all. I would definatly recommend any type of function here.

I have eaten here a number of times now. I first went with my wife one evening when neither of us could be bothered cooking dinner, and we have been coming back ever since. We often meet up here with a group of friends for some grub before going for drinks around Otley. The handmade pizzas are my favourite by far, and the dough isn't too thick and stodgy so you don't feel bloated afterwards. Staff are always friendly and keen to offer advice on wines & beers. The meat is all local from Weegmanns butchers across the road, and although staff tell you when ordering, I think they could advertise this a bit more as it is a good selling point :-) I have tried several items from the menu now and cannot fault one of them. Keep up the good work guys.

Despite living in Otley for 11 years, and seeing this pub open and close down several times, this was my first visit today!! Called in with husband on a Sunday around 1pm. The place had a few customers and was very nicely decorated (olde worlde charm), very clean and very good looking young male staff. We were immediately greeted by one of these delightful men which was great customer service. I noticed that they went out of their way to help a man with a baby in a pushchair access the toilets as well as assisting a rather rowdy family with their needs. Nothing seemed too much trouble. We ordered a cheese and tomato pizza which was £12 for any 2 or around £6.45 for one, which was more than enough for two of us. Hubby also ordered coleslaw. The drinks were served quickly and the food arrived around 15 minutes later cooked to perfection as a large rectangle shape with a deliciously thin crispy base and plenty of topping. All presented nicely on a wooden board with pizza cutter. It was delicious. The chef also popped out of the kitchen a few times and it was nice to see them dressed in appropriate attire and also seemed pleasant. We will definitely return especially as the pizzas can be taken away and are available all day every day. A great pub with great food and pleasant ambience.

The menu was quite extensive - pizzas, burgers, wraps, sandwiches plus other home comforts. The prices seemed quite reasonable (only £6.95 for cheese bacon burger with salad and fries) - therefore we thought it amazing value when they turned out to be super-tasty with the meat sourced from a local butchers and well presented. We've avoided The Black Horse in Otley for a number of years, although we only live 10 mins walk away, because it simply wasn't a great experience (on the occasions that it was actually open). A number of friends, including vegetarians had recommended it to us recently so as we were joining a meeting in the function room at Weds evening we decided to check it out. Excellent beers (Landlord, Saltaire Blonde and Otter Bitter this week) similarly excellent wine list and a simple menu of pub-grub dishes which turned out to be excellent quality (and prices). We stayed at the hotel and ate at the restaurant/lounge several times both out of convenience and because the food was good :) The hotel and restaurant are under new management since July 2014 and they are poised for success, IMHO. They are working on a new, expanded menu that will go beyond standard pub food, which I think will be excellent. The chefs are obviously capable of doing much more than is currently asked of them. What they are doing is good, all the same. The lamb burger is really, really good. The pizza is decent. The sausage, chips & beans is great value. One of the best meals I had, however, wasn't on the menu... I just wasn't feeling like fried food, so Mark (the manager) had the chef do up their fish pan-fried with a big salad and garlic bread -- SO GOOD. That speaks to the next point: the service, which is *amazing*. Nothing is too much trouble, they are so pleased to give their customers a good experience, and they bend over backwards to accommodate. I cannot say enough good things about this place and we will definitely be back. I do rather hope the revamp includes offering more local beer and ciders, as many of their offerings are widely available in Canada.

The first thing to remember here is that all reviews prior to July 2013 no longer apply, so worry not about these; this is a review of the work of the new team at the Black Horse restaurant. It is also worth noting that this is a restaurant review only; I have no experience of the hotel accommodation. It is possible to reserve a table (and will be essential in future, I imagine), but a chat with the manager, James, was all it took to secure a table for late evening. Last orders are taken at 2100, so it's advisable to bear this in mind.On arrival, MrsCapricorn and I were shown to our table, which was clean and well ordered. There are no printed menus, but the bill of fare is displayed on large blackboards. We were given plenty of time to make our choices, including drinks. A starter of assorted bread with butter was provided and we tucked in.The main courses arrived and were well worth the wait. The steaks were cooked to perfection (not an expression I use lightly), as were the side dishes. Of particular interest were the shallot rings, which were delicious. The meals were well presented, of quite remarkable quality and worth every penny.MrsCapricorn chose to have a dessert (Eton Mess), which she described in glowing terms; at least I think the quiet orgasmic moans from across the table indicated her enjoyment of the dish. The new team is relatively young and fired with an eagerness to excel; in this they show great promise. The chefs can boast an excellent professional pedigree and their meals speak their reputation, which is impressive and growing. The staff are attentive, polite and friendly; nothing is too much trouble for them. James' management is assured and confident; importantly, he is willing to listen to customers' comments and respond to these. All in all, this bodes well for the future. So why have I not awarded the full five points? Well, as the title of this review suggests, the restaurant is a work in progress and there are a very few points to address. For me, the greatest of these is the scarcity of vegetarian options; now, the restaurant is essentially a steakhouse and is clearly advertised as such, but not every customer is a carnivore and vegetarians appreciate having more than one choice on a menu. (For the record, I am a vegetarian, but for health reasons only; I fell off the wagon for the evening because I didn't fancy the veggie option on offer. Nu, shoot me.) I am certain that as the restaurant develops over time, the menu will find an optimum balance for its clientele.A team that works so hard at making dining in their restaurant such a splendid experience deserves to succeed. Visit the Black Horse restaurant and your taste buds will love you forever.

First comment is why does the review show a picture of Weegmans Butchers which I accept is across the road but bears no relevance to the hotel !! Went to the "In House" Chinese late last year , food not too bad, service terrible, price expensive, I don,t think I can ever remember being charged for prawn crackers before! Won't being be going again which is a shame as Otley really does need a Chinese Resturant badly and we would certainly been patrons several times a month with our friends.

A bit poor. The food was OK but extremely slow service, and the first time we were threatned with anything like food was prawn crackers after 50 minutes of waiting to be served on a set menu.Basically, they over-stretched themselves on this night, trying to maximise their customers. We finally finished eating not much before midnight, after having arrived around 8.10

Birthday group, seven of us again. Friday evening, our group and four other diners! Were told the early bird did not apply even though advertised. Then the menu was reinstated BUT 3 of the dishes were "not on". I had the last chicken too, Eventually after an appalling waste of time, the cost of the two curled up, dried up, lacking in meat lasagnes was deducted from the bill. The rest of the food was really poor, the poor little waitress tried very hard and I did say sorry if we had been difficult but the food was awful. She replied at least we had been nice about it not like the other four diners. Don't know if things have changed as we havn't been back. We recently stayed at this hotel over the new year. The rooms were clean but a little cold .The situation was ideal for the function we were attending. The staff friendly. My only criticism was the breakfast which had a cost of about eight pounds. We did think we would get a choice of cereals / fruit, etc. It consisted of a cooked breakfast ,toast and tea or coffee. This was ok for most of us but one member didn,t want a cooked meal and when asked what the alternative was found there wasn,t.When she asked if she could have a croissant or something found toast only was the option and.8pounds for some toast and coffee which she could have had in her room was a bit pricey.Perhaps the night before when checking in she should have been told cereals /fruit/pastries/yoghurts were not on the breakfast menu.

My husband and I had an overnight stay last week and had a pleasant trip. The hotel is easy to find with parking on a first come first serve basis. The barmaid (can I still say that?) was really lovely and welcoming and looked after us very well. The room was spacious and clean, bathroom ok. Breakfast was great. Would stay again

Came here with a relative for lunch today and had the gammon steak and lamb shank, both were plentiful and were excellant value for money at under 8 pounds each. The place was very quite hardly anybody in which I though would be a bad omen however this is definately one of the best pub lunches available in Otley and I would thoroughly recommend trying it.

Having travelled around the area looking for accomodation we pointed in the direction of The Black Horse. On our arrival we were greated by the owners Claire & Mark who did everything to make us feel at home. Once booked in we shown to our room which was tastefully decorated and comfortable. Walking around, the bar area was comfortable, clean and very friendly. The choice of cask ales was excellant and served with perfection, the taste was brilliant obviously this is down to a well kept cellar. We decided to have a meal and was given the menu. Spoilt for choice at the many mouth watering dishes available in addition to the succulent daily carvery. Asking the chef (James) what ingredients were in each dish, we were very pleased to hear a chef describe each dish and know his stuff. The food we had was prepared and presented with class. We will almost certainly visit again. It is a delight to find such a hotel and staff so helpfull and friendly.

The Black Horse has been under new management since February and the staff has created a warm ambience with great ales and well-priced quality food. As Aussies, we were searching for a a place which reflected the best of British pubs, and this was it! It became our home away from home, and we really miss our late afternoon ales and Sunday lunches. Kevin, Tony and the rest of the staff really go out of their way to ensure that their customers have a memorable experience.

We’ve just been to the art gallery café for lunch we won’t be going back. They sell scones but they’ve run out of jam What kind of business can’t even organise going to the shop and getting a pot of jam. Leeds city council should be ashamed of themselves.

I took a walk to the bakery to see if they supplied fresh bread. I checked the opening hours and when I arrived it was closed. Wasted journey. Looks a nice place from the outside though.

A large, airy and light-filled pub (for a change) with plenty of outside seating near the City Museum- a short hop from culture to chaos! The young workers were efficient, very hard-working and helpful. What is distinctive about this place (and its saving-grace) is that it has a sufficient number of students to keep the place on an ‘even keel’ (for example, talk of Trump’s superior IQ is, mercifully, rare). TOP TIPS: (1) choose outside or gallery seating for a relatively blissful experience ; (2) in general, choose a Spoons having a reasonably high proportion of students (albeit with a modicum of immaturity and ‘lively’ behaviour). In this way, relative sanity and intellect may well prevail.
