In my opinion it’s the best pub in the area! Why? Real old fashion friendly atmosphere-great beer-real history-best location-family run…..if you haven’t been you’re missing a treat.

Idyllic hidden gem, fantastically kept beer straight from the cask and a second to none location. It's a pub from a bygone era representing everything good about a small, local, independently run, country pub. Especially appealing if you are a fan of horses.

An interesting, ramshackle, small pub. They sell baguettes and chips and four ales, a couple of lagers and some cider. Plenty of choice in soft drinks, as well. The service is friendly and good. The building has seen better days, though. It's crumbling and rotting, in desperate need of maintenance. The non-food parts of the pub, like carpets, window sills and shelves are really grubby with years of no dusting. The place really needs a heavy clean and some decorating. Rotting windows upstairs are not a good look. Even the sign board outside needs a refresh. We weren't quite sure why there was a coffin in the corner of the garden on the way to the outside loo; a somewhat macabre sight.

Fantastic pub out near Checkendon. Really friendly, and the set up inside and outside the pub makes it feel cosy and inviting. I asked the landlady how old the pub is.... about 400 years old! Indoors there are fireplaces, and comfy seats, and outside there is a marquee, with skittle alley, and an amazing log burner that looks like an old JCB digger arm. Oh, and there is a darts board indoors too. Highly recommend this country pub.

In a constantly changing world, it's nice to find something that doesn't. I've been coming here for over 40 years and members of my family much longer. A classic British pub with a warm welcome and great beer. Living away from the area now it's great to nip in and relax by the fire, remembering times past and friendly banter of the present.

Nothing competes with the Black Horse. Once all English pubs were similar but this is the last one left because its family run and not part of a chain or a brewery. The difference is 100% enjoyable and a real break from the insane modern world.

The most friendliest pub you will ever go to. Family run pub for several generations now. If you didn't know it was there or didn't know the area. You would never find it if it wasn't for Google maps nowaday. I can't find a down side because it's set away from all the world to relax and drink without the hussel and bussel of towns and cities. Great atmosphere 5 stars all day long. Don't go there and expect a fruit machine and a jukebox this is one of the last proper country pubs you will find.

Me and my father had a trip to Checkendon to explore and learn a little bit more about the polish community that used to live in the camp nearby back in 20th century. The people inside the pub were very friendly and welcoming, I could sense an old, traditional way people used to receive passers-by with their hospitality and heart-warming greeting. Had a pint of lager and a nice chatter with the lady by the till. Definitely would like to come and visit there again on a Sunday afternoon. :)

I am rating this pub 5-star because it is very special and reluctantly because it would be spoiled by convoys of Chelsea tractors pitching up en masse. Best to walk or cycle there to fully appreciate its attraction. The local beer is excellent and and the food most tasty if you’re hungry ... it’s very basic i.e. just what you want to soak up the authentic atmosphere.

Best pub in the world with the best food (baguettes) served at any pub. Stepping through the door is like going back in time, so don't expect a cooked meal. It is always in one of these two states: it's either packed or completely empty - with seemingly no logic to it. The beer-garden is lovely, and if it's hot there's plenty of shade available.
