The Black Horse in Exeter

Possibly 30 years since I was last here. Not sure why, it's a great pub. Fantastic service from Will, and great food too. Definitely won't be leaving it another 30 years!

I stopped by here for some chips and a beer whilst shopping in Exeter. William was very welcoming and has great customer service. I enjoyed both my purchases and a much needed break. I will return when I visit the city again. Many thanks for a pleasant experience.

Visited the pub a few weeks ago, as I was in the Exeter area. Saw on the speedquzzing website they do an event here at 8pm as I play regularly in Torquay. I turned up with my friend about 7:45 and saw the host was all set up and ready to go, it was very busy which is always a good sign. Waited around till about 8:45, no sign of starting or no announcements from the host. So ended up leaving before it had started, which was a shame cause it’s a nice pub with lovely beer.

We had a little birthday get together here and it was just incredible. The staff were absolutely amazing (Jack in particular!!!!) going above and beyond in every way - made the whole area look gorgeous, looked after the cake and balloons - I just cannot thank them enough. Booking was super easy and they made everything so great. Would really recommend xx

Plenty of screens for watching sport. Decent Guinness. Food did the trick. A friendly and lively atmosphere.

Great place in the city to watch the rugby

Would of gave it a 0 if possible,got locked in the toilet and eventually got me out after about 15 mins after that got no apology even a free drink would of been nice,apparently someone also got locked in there the other day so should of been blocked off.

Had a fab time! Was served by the lovely Louisa, very welcoming and very attentive!! Atmosphere was good too. Will definitely be coming back!

Was looking for a pub showing football, that served decent pub food/drink. Ordered on app, reasonable wait time for food/drink delivered by friendly staff.

Food was lovely Jack was working on his own behind the bar and was still taking time to check people were ok, food came relatively quickly it was well presented, and and was very nice, I would like more onion rings a two looked a bit lost on the plate but overall a lovely place to eat, I watched the golf course would definitely return

Yummy food nice atmosphere and just off the high street

Booked a table to have lunch with friends , we both drive nearly an hour to meet up . Two ordered the Christmas Turkey, one the chicken , one the festive burger and a chicken ham hock pie. The Turkey was not real Turkey but two thin slices of a processed roll type , both of these meals were cold , as was the chicken and all four servings of gravy were cold . Ordered crushed potatoes but were given regular ones. The waitress took the two Turkey meals and the four gravy to be heated up and also the potatoes to be crushed. She brought back the potatoes , now crushed and three pots of gravy and said she would bring back the heated dishes as quick as she could. Needless to say by the time she bought back the heated up meals the gravy and potatoes had started to go cold. It also resulted in us all not eating at the same time due to the disjointed service. The fourth gravy never materialized and tbh we had gone past asking now . We were looking forward to dessert and coffee but decided to leave and have coffee and cake in John Lewis . Very disappointing given we had not seen our friends for awhile and with a combined travel time of nearly two hours to get to the Black Horse

A must visit every time we come back to Exeter! Great atmosphere and staff always offer great service with a smile. The manager Stoo has made this the place for sport and pub games!!

Greeted as soon as we walked in, plenty of seating available. Opted for the festive toasted sandwich which was lovely. Friendly staff, would visit again.

Absolutely brilliant experience! Thursday quiz night with DJ Chris has got to be the best night out in Exeter. With such amazingly friendly and welcoming staff at the black horse, you just can't beat it!

Had a very tasty lunch here. They offer a lunch deal including a toastie/ sandwich and a drink. Plenty of seating and a cosy atmosphere. The interactive darts looks popular but haven't had a chance to try ot myself yet.

Such a great pub! Molly and Stoo were great bar staff! Offered great drinks and such a great outside space. Really relaxing and a great time to enjoy with friends.

Nice, traditional pub. Quiet on a mid-week lunchtime but cosy & welcoming. Food good, service good but hot drinks need improving. Stingiest/smallest cup of tea ever & not even hot - lukewarm at best (certainly did not seem to have been made with boiling water !). There was actually more milk in the little jug on the side than there was tea in the cup ! Certainly not worth the £ 3 cost ! Will visit again for food as we had a lovely meal but will not bother with the tea unless the price for same is reduced or the cups are replaced with mugs.

Cheap beer. Good food. Service okay.

Limited lunch time menu. We ordered food for a business lunch and were then reapproached a few minutes later being told our selection was not available as there was a big party due in later that day and the chef was saving food for them. We were guided to select something from the wrap part of the menu. It appeared there was some break down in communication/lack of team work between the chef and the waitering staff on what food options were available. Didn’t feel at all like a valued customer.

Some guy (don't know him him) took a disiking to me and got the staaff to ask me to leave, which i did. No arrgument but what can you do?

Came in to watch the football at 2pm and ordered food on the app, it was quite quiet at this point and we got a bit twitchy when it got to nearly 3pm and still no food arrived - went up to ask and was informed the kitchen was closed between 2-3pm. The barman we spoke to (about 5,4” bleached hair) was really apologetic and provided us with a drink on the house, and our food promptly arrived 5 minutes after the kitchen reopened - with some extra chips which our friend appreciated as he hadn’t ordered anything. Bad situation but dealt with well and the food was lovely. Thank you

Often frequent the Black Horse for a casual night out. The bar staff are always welcoming & accommodating & the food is on point. Darts & pool table make for some good entertainment while the beer garden with undercover area is a lovely extra on the sunny evenings

Sadly this sums up my continued experience of Greene King Pubs now, a chain in a complete free fall decline. The places are frequently shabby, the food has been well below average for some time. Last chance saloon, a visit to the Black Horse, Sunday lunch, no beef, it turned up and was no good, Roast chicken, only one portion left, Chicken with Nachos, no chicken, this is ABC stuff, it was not that busy, no more Greene King for me, makes Wetherspoons look like the Ivy !!

Mollie was an amazing help. She was able to assist us to our table. She accommodated the need of a dear friend Will who was in need of extra space and made some room for him. She gave us our food which was incredible! She was an absolute star and she even informed us about an app so we could order with ease. This pub is so amazing and our experience was immaculate.

Lovely atmosphere, served by Mollie J, good service and speedy. Would recommend :) Guinness was good so was foods. Good smoking area

Updated review... In July 24 and tried some sharing plates wow... Lovely Korean chicken and smashed potato Welcome back... lovely outdoor garden. Lots of space, quiet also and really good service by one of the managers .decent drinks and just a decent pub... good to see it back open.

Really sorry to say this, but the portion of chips that came with my meal was awkwardly small… I wish I took a photo, but it was a single layer of chips may be a tots of like 10 pieces ?! It literally looked awkward on the plate…. I expected more for a £12 dish…

They made a special effort for my husbands birthday, good food and good atmosphere. Everyone was lovely even other customers.

Brandon the barman was the hostess with the mostest! Super friendly and accommodating. Thank you! We shared the small plates and we were pleasantly surprised 👏

Sunday roast is really great.... If only you are on time to get it..... Each other Sunday either it's not served or its only chicken left.... 2 pints of San Miguel were 7.20 at 13.55 and turned into £8.00 at 15.26???????

Good food, bar staff are nice even if one of them does sound like Boris Johnson, decent prices, ambience and nice decor would recommend

The staff on first arrival were very friendly and polite . Food was outstanding , lovely quality and the taste was amazing . Highly recommended to all .

The food was stunning, the desert was fabulous, checked on us constantly, assisted us when needed, and were just nice in general.

In 1986-87, I was a student exchange from the US attending the University of Exeter. Most Fridays my British friends and I would make the long walk from Lopez Hall down Pennsylvania Ave to "the Blackie" to enjoy a great night. The people at the pub were always nice to we students, despite our youthful noise. I have such fond memories of good times there with Hywel Davies, Lucy White, Andy Bev, Fiona, and the rest of of the gang. I remember that a pint was 90 p back then. Also met a few Royal Marines there, and even met the officer who was paired with Prince Edward when the later left training. Over several pints, he told me what really happened, which I won't share here. I went on to serve in the US Marine Corps for 26 years. During that time, I worked with the British military often, and found that British soldiers were always our best and closest allies...people that you could count on always. In any case, those were fine times, made greater with the passage of time, as I'm no longer a youthful college kid, but a man of 60 years.

Ideally located near the big John Lewis, it's a great place to drop in for a quick bite and a pint. They show all sports, and they are more than happy to put on most televised sporting events. There's a pool table, digital darts and a beer garden too. Beer and food very reasonably priced in my opinion

They dare say last ordered to my football side after winning the lash olympics… shame.

Last evening I ordered a flat-iron steak from the menu (as I had done on several previous occasions and which I had been very pleased with). What was served to me last night was not a flat-iron steak (i.e. a single steak), it was beef cut up into bite size pieces, looking like food more suited to a child or geriatric. The waiter explained they had been instructed (by head office - ?) to now serve steaks cut up. I can't imagine any steak eater wanting for his/her steak to be served in cut-up pieces. I felt completely deceived, deprived of an enjoyable eating experience and hugely let down. I did not eat the meat. Had I known the steak would be served in cut-up pieces, I never would have ordered it. The waiter was gracious and offered a free drink for my husband and myself. I asked for the cost of my meal to be refunded. He refunded our entire bill. While this was a generous gesture, I will never go to The Black Horse, Longbrook Street, Exeter again after last night's experience. My first choice of meal last night was the fish and chips but these were not available. This was the second experience I'd had of them not being available at The Black Horse. How does this happen for such a classic pub dish? They were showing on the menu as available, and there was no indication (e.g. on a blackboard) anywhere that fish and chips were not available last night. My husband and I went for the meal around 6 pm - I don't understand why fish and chips would not be available so early in the evening. I would not recommend The Black Horse, Longbrook Street, Exeter to anyone wanting to have a good eating experience.

Amazing food, lush bar staff and just generally amazing. Spoke to Carmen who was pleasant and made sure my visit to the establishment went well.

Great service from the start with email communication about the booking and preorder for a group of 14. They didn’t ask for a deposit which I found a pleasant change. Food arrived quickly for the short time we had and everyone enjoyed their meals ranging from toastie to pie and burgers. Thank you we will be back.

Standard City pub with big screens. Main selling point was that it's not full on Friday evening. 200 yards from City centre, so too far out for typical revellers to walk during a night on the booze!

When we visit Exeter we always go to The Black Horse. The food is always excellent and the barman Brandon is fantastic.

Come here all the time with my friends and we absolutely love it. Not only is the food always amazing the staff are also incredible. So friendly and I wouldn’t recommend it enough. Will continue to visit throughout the coming years! (Compliments to the chef)

I like Cider but not Thatchures so it's a big no from me. They do have girly bottled fuit ciders aswell. My advice would to have at least one decent draght cider.

Excellent pub my favourite in exeter

Trying to visit different real ale pubs in Exeter and found this one. It's a sports bar, not our favourite, but the choice of ales was good even though they weren't really to my liking. Settled on the Yardbird in the end which was ok. Good service from the enthusiastic bar staff though. Its a vast pub and although we didn't have food the fare coming out looked really good and was very reasonably priced. Well patronised and obviously a popular pub....

A lot to like about this pub but the bar service is soooooopp slow.....

We stopped in for a quick bite to eat on a midweek lunchtime, the pub was fairly quiet so lots of tables to choose from, it's a proper city pub with sports screens and a garden area, there's a good lunch menu, I had the chicken and bacon sandwich which was huge and tasty and hubby had a bacon and cheese burger with fries, both meals were good and served pretty quick, a great place for lunch

Fantastic customer service: promptly served by Jess, Clarie and Carmen. A great Sunday evening watching the rugby.

Never posted a review but I'd recommend the place to everyone. John, behind the bar, is top class, so welcoming and helpful. The whole staff was spot on. A good honest boozer and grub.

This is one of my favourite pubs in Exeter, second only to the one I work in. The pub itself has the feel of a old village pub, but with all the modern facilities you’d expect in a big city. I come here on account of the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. I have also eaten here multiple times and it’s always been top notch. If you’re looking for a bite to eat or just a pint after a long day this place has you sorted. The prices are very competitive for a city pub just off the Main Street. With a courtyard beer garden, a pool table and darts available everyday and their very popular pub quiz every Thursday it’s great for family’s or large groups, and also accommodating for people just looking for a quiet pint. Highly recommended

This place is amazing. Was in Exeter for a wedding and went here a lot. Staff are epic, I left something there and they shipped it internationally.. unreal service. 5 stars!

Stopped in for Sunday lunch as we were walking past the pub looked historical from the outside and well looked after we both liked the look so thought we’d check out the menu The lovely smell’s coming from the kitchen sold us The pub was clean and the service at the bar was quick and efficient we ordered our roasts at the same time as our drinks one beef one chicken a pint and a wine Both roasts were great the beef was cooked perfectly and the chicken was lovely and moist Seasonal veg all cooked perfectly Only downside was not enough gravy for my taste Next time we’ll order some more But a great stop just off the main high street

This pub is so nice. So clean and tidy. Made to feel welcome as soon as a member of staff see's you walking theoughtbthe door. It's like a tardis, goes on and on. The first game of pool is FREE and already to go, which is a massive bonus.🎱 They also have darts, which I believe are electronic they look awesome but did not stay long enough to play, next time for sure . The beer garden is a right sun trap. Perfect for any sports fan as there are tvs outside, too! 😀 🎾 📺 even have some shelter. Definitely recommend this pub, it's a diamond of a place.
