Great wee place and first pub I made my regular when first moved down from Leith some 11 years ago. Has real cosy feel to the place with great staff and has mix of local regulars and visitors. Next to ancient Parish church of St Nicholas which is worth a visit. Parking is not a problem providing there isn't a wedding or funeral next door to the pub. Fine for wheelchair users and help is at hand if needed. Often families go there for meals with very good chef and the days when good to be outside it has adequate space. There is often a fire outside to keep patrons warm if pub inside is busy. Definitely worth the visit.

Great little place full of character so lucky to have this place on our door step. Food as usual is amazing with lovely staff and great atmosphere.

Visited again with friends for lunch and chose the brisket beef toastie with soup followed by Conder Toffee eaton mess Food was outstanding along with the service Highly recommend

Called in for a meal haven't been in for year's. The Beef was lovely we really enjoyed ourselves and loved the meal. Not the cheapest place to dine but we'll worth the money 😉

We were made to feel totally uncomfortable and won’t be back. If you like live music go to a pub that is set up for it, this is not it !!!!!

Service was great! Lovely Sunday Lunch. Beef was pink and the roast veg were lovely. Had haggis on toast with poached egg to start and it was great too.

Prices advertised online cheaper than what was in the pub. Sunday lunch arrived swimming in gravy and the meat was chewy and excessively fatty. We were also not advise there would be a service charge

This place used to be lovely but it's not the same anymore. You eat with your eyes as well and on this occasion it was poor. It tasted good but cheap cuts at this price need more to please the customer.

We had a family special birthday. Our party was 16 persons. We received a great welcome on arrival and shown to our table. The staff are very friendly and extremely efficient. We were served really great food which was very tasty and hot. All tastes were catered for. I have used the Black Horse dining facilities many times and it is always first class. Thank you to all the staff both service and kitchen for a very enjoyable celebration.

Honestly been living in close this pub for years and only came to the black horse on a whim 7 months ago, since then been coming here nearly every weekend and any free time we get during the week. Food fantastic, staff more than friendly the locals, you won’t find friendlier people.

Myself, hubby and friend went for Sunday lunch today. We have been previously and enjoyed it hence the return. Sadly this visit was disappointing. My friend had ribeye beef which was inedible ( all fat and gristle). This was returned when plates were cleared and the staff mentioned it to kitchen when we complained. The answer was “ it’s ribeye and is fatty in the middle”. My friend is a cook btw. No apology or comp offer. We ordered desserts and asked for the bill to which 10% had been added. Tip. On commenting that food had been sent back as inedible staff offered to remove the tip, which I accepted as some form of refund for my friend. That meat should never have been placed on a plate, could have fed it to dogs who would possibly have turned their noses away. 30 years in hospitality and family still in the trade. We will not be back.

Wonderful gem of a place. High quality food with wonderful staff and a chilled environment. The menu is a little "fancy" but when you strip it back it's quality food with taste combinations that work. The staff are warm, friendly and genuinely a delight to chat to. BEST sticky toffee pudding I've ever had ... delightful!

Set back from the main round, this gem of a pub restaurant is a must for a superb meal. With a specials board and a small menu, you know the food is cooked from scratch and the taste confirms that. High quality food and service to match. An absolute perfect little find I should keep quiet about, but can't. Try it, you will not be disappointed.

We have been here a few times now and never ever had a bad meal. The menu varies nicely and the food is absolutely finger licking amazing. The place itself is so quirky and has a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended for families or a special night out with the other half. 😁 We had the salted beef, salmon, duck hash, halibut fooled by apple crumble and eggnog brûlée.

Sorry charging a service charge on your bill is poor ,when staff are not giving you good service ,always talking to each other and annoying the customer, will not be coming back ,very below standards

Can’t recommend highly enough. Fantastic food from a clearly ambitious, creative and professional kitchen served in a cosy setting with character complete with walls adorned with an abundance of local photography. The staff are welcoming and atmosphere homely. Out performs anywhere else in the local area for both quality and cost. Greatly enjoyed the smoked haddock and cullen skink.

A regular visitor here for several years and with a good vibe, nice staff and traditional dishes it’s hard not to return, however, the last few visits have had noticeably smaller portions with increasing prices. Not too bothered about the price but when the price is going up and the portion size is going down, well…..

It's always hard to please everyone when arranging a staff Christmas dinner fayre lunch out but I must say everyone came away very full & content. The food is out of this world and probably some of the best we have ever had. The staff are always please to see you and the service is second to none. Thank you for starting our Christmas break off so wonderfully.

Came here for the 1st time in restaurant week. The place is interesting and quirky. The staff were all friendly. I only tried 1 type of wine which was very nice. The food was also very good.

We went for the restaurant week. First course lovely. Second course the burger could have been warmer. Barely warm really. Beware of the 10% surcharge. Apart from that okay meal.

A cosy pub with a lovely dining space, great food and awesome staff. The pub is eclectically furnished with lots of odd and ends and feels cosy and welcoming. Loads of photos taken by Zulu Pete on the walls and he clearly has an eye. He also has taste buds and that is clear. My brisket with mash, crispy onions and black garlic gravy was awesome, my wife loved the toad in a hole with a heavenly sweet onion gravy (though had a problem with carrot appearing in bubble and squeak) but forgave that once she tasted the golden syrup creme brulee, which was stellar! Our friend pretty much inhaled the halibut and said he would love the recipe for the shellfish sauce, I had a lick off his plate and agree. Stunning. Our other friend went for three small plates, would have fought us off with a knife over the mackerel, loved the crab but was less keen on how soft the chicken liver pate was. Possibly a personal thing but I thought worth mentioning as a feedback. My second visit and I seriously recommend it to anyone who wants smart, intelligent modern pub cooking. From last time I remember the blackened tuna was a joy btw

Went to Zulu within the pub for food, it was really nice food with some unique dishes and the quirky atmosphere of the pub makes it a unique experience. Quite reasonably priced too.

Me and my wife live local and whenever we fancy a decent meal, the Black Horse always crops up in conversation. The consistency of the quality of food is amazing and we have never had a bad meal. We feel the pricing is very generous given the high standards that are produced in the kitchen. The menu changes all the time and many of the dishes are completely unique to the restaurant. We have also visited with family members in the past who have always been impressed by the food, service and the atmosphere inside the pub. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Black Horse

Pub nice and unique, different from most pubs with plenty of character and a good atmosphere. Served a couple of real ales which was a plus, however, the food was pretty average. Scollop starter with black pudding was okay but the fish and chips were well below average, as the chips were burnt and soggy, the mushy peas were awfully presented and the fish was definitely not fresh!

I visited the black horse for the first time and I was not disappointed. The staff where friendly and helpful. The food was so tasty with a great menu . The restaurant is decorated quirky there is so much to look at . I will definitely be back .

Well worth a visit. Amazing food which makes it so hard to pick from the menu as there is so many delicious options to choose from. Dublin bay prawns were delicious & I would order those again. Crab lasagne sounds weird but was delicious. Will definitely be going back

Menu not as varied as had been at last visit

We used to go to this pub regularly a lot of years ago & luckily it still hasn’t changed one bit. We had drinks outside in the sunshine & the 2 hand pulled real ales were excellent. We went inside for our meal & all 3 of us really enjoyed our food. 2 of us had a sweet & both of those were terrific. A pet hate of mine is restaurants that automatically put a 10% service charge on but on this occasion I couldn’t complain.

From the friendly, welcoming and helpful staff to the absolutely scrumptious food the standards here are fantastic for a village eatery. We had Slow cooked brisket, mash, crispy onions and black garlic gravy and a Steak Burger with filthy fries. Yummy!! Trust me, it will not be our last visit ...

We had a memorable day/evening in a traditional pub which deserves my highest praise. We will definitely be going again.

Me and the family went for lunch today and had the ribeye steak and chips and sticky toffee pudding. The whole meal was beautiful and so tasty plus the staff are very friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend the black horse and can't wait to go back :)

Absolutely loved everything about this place. Quirky and interesting decor inside, a lovely little beer garden. Staff very friendly and attentive. Food fantastic a great menu not to big but a great variety of dishes. 1st time we visited but Can't wait to return in the very near future.

A pub with a difference, put your demob suit on and a trilby, get the other half to put on her floral dress and her little hat with the flower on the side, and you'll fit right in. You will see items on display you haven't seen in a long time. They do serve food but parking could be a problem if you arrive at the wrong time, street parking only.

Excellent food,first visit for a long while,used to dine there a lot many years ago and the food is as good as I remember it ,will be going back very soon.

Really over priced for the quality and quantity I had the chicken schnitzel that was far too thin. The Parma ham was overpowering with salt due to there being no chicken. The cheese on top was clearly melted in a microwave and For too long as there was no colour but rock hard. No side salad or sides and just a few chips that were okay. The scallops and belly fat had 5 scallops and thick bacon that was cremated. Not belly pork. The place is actually nice and really quirky I just thought the food was horrendous.

Visited this pub yesterday with my husband, son and daughter. The food was beautiful, the service was good and the price wasn't too bad either 😁. We definitely be back

Amazing, never disappointed here. Quality is great. Our favourite restaurant in the NE and we eat out a lot. Can be pricey but you get what you pay for. Only wish it was a tiny bit less so we could go weekly!

A pub you can never be bored in, there's lots of interesting bits and pieces just hanging about and the food is great.

My parents live nearby and we always look forward to eating and drinking in the black horse when we are visiting. Top quality, well cooked food and excellent service! Ribeye steak and fries on the most recent visit, delicious!

We had a great evening in the Black Horse, a superb 4-course meal followed by live music. The food, atmosphere and staff were great. Well done Pete, it's great having such an interesting pub in West Boldon.

Been coming here for the last 13 years after being introduced by friends! Always have amazing food and the selection of wines are always perfect to accompany the dishes! Just had the Coffee Meringue and salted pecan dessert for after - out of this world! You must try it!!

A cracking pub that does cracking food!

Amazing tapas and friendly service

On Thursday evening my husband and I decided on a spur of the moment visit to the Black Horse as we hadn't been for ages. The restaurant was fully booked but the helpful lady behind the bar said we could eat in the bar area. We had six tapas dishes between us with sweet potato fries and everything was delicious especially my cod & samphire and black pudding with blue cheese. My husband said all of the veggie dishes were tasty. The waitress who served us was very pleasant and the place had extremely interesting decor. We will definitely return.

We have visited The Black Horse a few times recently and never been disappointed. Our recent visit was on Thursday evening and the restaurant was fairly full with a nice atmosphere and not too noisy. Whilst the decor is rather quirky and maybe not be to everyones liking any shortcoming here are made up by the quality of the food. Some of the dishes are very creative and flavoursome and the menu does change quite a lot. Last night we had the Blackened Tuna for mains and it was exceptionally good. The service is also friendly and generally efficient. I would highly recommend this place and it is on our list of regular places we like to eat at.

Group of 4 visited the Black Horse. Booked a table for 1430. One opted for the beef the remainder for the lamp. One sent the lamb back due to the fatty lamb and swopped it for the beef. Overall I thought it was on par with a Toby Cauvery. The red was decent.

We are regular visitors to the Black Horse. I booked a table for Sunday Lunch for two . Parking is easy & were immediately attended on arrival & drinks promptly served. We ordered from a variety of meats & alternative choices. We both ordered The Lamb Rump as never had before. Lunch was served more or less immediately & served very hot by a very pleasant young lady. The plate was a thing of beauty to the eye. A variety of beautiful range of vegetables, roast & creamy mashed potato, Yorkshire Pudding. Served on top . The Star of The Show , Lamb Rump. Tender , Moist, Succulent, Tasty. They say , See Rome Before You Die. We say See The Black Horse , Boldon, Order Lamb Rump before you die.

Went early at 5.30. Meal very nice and well presented. Staff good too. Made to feel welcome.

We went for the first time following a recommendation. Food was delivered so quickly, it obviously wasn’t cooked to order and it showed. My partners main was most disappointing with hard/dry belly pork. My veggie dish was so greasy although the accompanying salad was fresh and tasty. Quite small portions for the price. Strawberry and brownie sundae was just that - no sauce, no nuts or wafer, just strawberry, brownie and ice cream! Lacked imagination. We had two courses and were in and out in 50 minutes. 10% service charge added to bill. An expensive hour out.

What a place! Probably the quirkiest pub I've been in because it's like a museum. Reasonably priced ales. Didn't eat, but will be back because the food looked amazing.

Ordered the seabass and ceaser salad on Friday. The most unbelievably amazing food ever. How a chef can make fish and salad so unbelievably amazing is a work of genius. Bring on the Michelin star I think!

It was my first visit to the Black Horse and I (we) will be definitely back. The food was absolutely fantastic. The place itself is quirky and very inviting. The staff are so friendly. Love it!! 😀
