We made a decision to take our grandchildren out to have lunch at the Black horse we got ourselves a drink at the bar asked to order some food and was told to go away and come back in 15 minutes as they had a table of 14 in and they couldn’t take any more orders we went back 15 minutes later and was told I have no idea when you’re gonna order you can order it now if you want I’m not sure I can’t tell you how long as I’m not the chef.I just think this is poor service and we made the decision to go back into town and have a nice meal there so unfortunately you lost out today

Lovely trip out, beautiful food and lovely staff. Such a nice view whilst enjoying dinner, service was very quick! Would recommend

Food was served quick enough, however, my fish was very greasy, tasteless due to amount of grease coming from it, granddaughter ordered steak with a sauce, sauce was sitting on a plate of grease, again tasteless, the bar itself could do with a makeover, dull, lifeless

Just made it here 5 minutes before the kitchen closed. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful offering up extra time to settle and read the menu. Not needed as we knew we wanted fish and chips. Placed to order than sat outside along the canal with drinks. Meals were piping hot and very generous portions. The batter on the fish was amazing. The pub is also very dog friendly. They are welcome inside and out. Bowls and treats available.

We needed lunch and had no time to look round Pleasantly surprised good choice quickly served by very young staff.large portions I had chicken and my son had pie all with lots of veg and choice of potatos too full for dessert As it was squally we sat inside later we walked by and saw garden and canal very pretty Will definately visit again if in Devizes

Walked along the canal and came across this pub ,pretty location next to canal busy booked a table no trouble two of us and our two dogs, varied menu good prices friendly helpful staff ,good food for us good sized portions well cooked both really enjoyed it good pint of beer to ,will be coming back sometime ,bill very good well done black horse

We popped in here on a Friday lunchtime. We hadn’t booked but luckily there were a couple of tables free, as the weather outside was pretty awful. Usually you can sit and watch the canal boats alongside the pub. The staff were very friendly. I chose the chilli with rice, and nachos and my husband chose the beef pie. The chilli was delicious, home made and very tasty. Plenty of rice and nachos, and sour cream. My husbands pie came with new or chipped potatoes,(he chooses new) and three veg and gravy, a substantial meal, but he still ate it. We have never had a bad meal at this pub, and the food it very varied, to suit everyone. We didn’t have a pudding as we were very full but will be visiting again soon, Well done.

Last minute decision to have supper at the Black Horse pub , Bath Road , Devizes. The menu had a good choice of meals , we ordered Chilli , Gammon and Fish & chips . It was absolutely spot on !!!! Beautifully prepared , and plenty of it ! Served piping hot , and freshly made . Definitely give it a go , great value for money ,

We came here with a large group of 52 people. even though there were many different food choices, the service was excellent and the food delicious. Would love to dine here again in the Summer.

5 of us went for food tonight (3 adults 2 children). On arrival shown to our table and ordered drink at the table and given menus. Allowed time to order. Food was ready within 15 mins. Food come out piping hot. The steak in my steak and ale pie melted in the mouth and the gravy was to die for. Son has steak and that was cooked to perfection. Daughter had the 8oz burger and a side of cheese and bacon topped fries again delicious. 1 child had the fish finger meal and the other had fish and chips from the main menu. Batter was nice and crisp and light. There was so much food that we all ended up leaving a little so, no room for dessert. Prices were reasonable. Service was great and staff all friendly. We had a 6.30 table so not too busy. Definitely go again when my son is back in the country.

We just stopped by for a coffee on our way elsewhere. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful with the directions we needed to get to our destination plus the coffee was decent.

We arrived in Devizes too late to descend the Caen Hill locks that day, so moored up outside the pub at about 2pm. Popped in to book a table for 8pm and they were quite happy with us staying on their mooring overnight. We let them know that one of our party was joining us later and, even though the kitchen was due to close at 8pm, they took our order and then held off serving it til everyone had arrived. The food was as good as the service - often the steak in a mixed grill is a cheap offcut. Not this one. A beautifully cooked, melt in the mouth piece of excellent meat.

Omg ,what a great meal .really big and very reasonably priced .cant fault and the staff were great fun and friendly .Cant wait to come back .

Chose this pub as it was a mid point for meeting our friends. Was a bit dubious after reading previous reviews. Our experience was all positive. The welcome we got was good and they had reserved our table outside by the canal. The beer was well presented with a choice of 6X or IPA, and not over expensive. There was a lunchtime menu of sandwiches which most of us went for. Also the main menu was available except the chargrill or fish. There was plenty of ham and the slices were cut thick. The sandwiches were good and when we asked for something slightly different they went out of their way to oblige.Service was very good as we didn’t have long to wait for long The waitress was courteous and interacted with us well. All in all it was a pleasure to visit this pub and made meeting our friends really enjoyable.

Asked about food at 3:58pm and the sullen-looking bartender made me feel like I was asking for her to bake me a soufflé. Just tell me “sorry, the kitchen closes at 4pm on Sunday “. This on top of them never bringing us a menu when we showed up 30 minutes prior.

I concur with the views of others... Stayed only because of the location... Beer OK... Food, best avoided... Poorly Managed... Shame, could be a goldmine..

Don’t bother. We called in left patiently waiting for ages. Then told they couldn’t fit us in. When we said ok we’ll go somewhere else ( not aggressive) we got a nasty reply , we have enough customers anyway!! What away to treat people who had walked to them via the locks following recommendations . Very rude very ageist. They deserve to lose business.

After walking in from town, we had to wait at the bar for at least 10 minutes to get drinks , lack of staff, the pub wasn't that busy, it was only 6 45, ordered our drinks, then asked where do we order food, oh, sorry, we're not doing food atm , we've had a table of 10 just arrived , we can't serve you. Well you could of told us before we ordered drinks. The staff were miserable looking , my glass was disgustingly dirty, I'm kinda glad we didn't get served, and no need to revisit either ... poor poor poor .

Didn’t even make it to order food. Asked landlady if ok to more narrowboat outside (there are moorings for patrons) and was rudely told ‘No! There’s two already out there. People come to look at the canal, not your narrow boat’. OK then - we’ll take our business elsewhere. All 8 of us were planning on eating dinner and spending the evening at your pub. But we won’t now 🤷🏻‍♀️

Poor food. Pie meat grey no flavour. Ordered a liquor coffee. This was served in a cup on a saucer with a side of milk/cream. Not what was expected and luke warm. Asked politely for the coffee to be removed from the bill. The landlord response was it was what you ordered. Then proceeded to tell us to F off twice and he would take a photo of us so he staff knew we were banned. Do not rate this establishment and would not return

There was a lady behind bar. Bar lady went outside with out saying anything. Meanwhile 5 people waiting to be served 1 man left, waited 5 mins went elsewhere. It was worst experience of my life. Will not be going there again

Stopped here using the pub moorings, unfortunately that makes you a tourist in the eyes of the management. She was heard to clearly tell her staff that "they don't give us anything out of season so proritise the locals. Food was good but getting cutlery a challenge. Probably one to avoid

Beautiful sunny day and a perfect setting, today unfortunately that’s as good as it gets. Landlady, very rude, abrupt and extremely rude to her staff in front of customers, walking around moaning at people turning up, on a bank holiday! Refused to serve food outside, and couldn’t accommodate us inside, due to reserved tables, opted for drinks outside and crisps, noticed when we left an hour later , tables were all still empty.. FairPlay to the bar staff that have to put up with the unprofessional behaviour.

Arrived at this place yesterday having contacted ahead to book, only to be turned away from moorings being told, 'people are here to see the water not the side of your boat' and that we should go moor on the far bank. Which we did, and had a lovely barbeque instead, so thanks.How annoying it must be to have a pub with moorings if you don't want those inconvenient boaty things there.Won't bother again and will spend our money in more hospitable places where they don't come out to publicly confront boating customers on arrival and see them off to the far bank in front of other diners.For any others visiting this beautiful town and looking for somewhere to stop in, there are some great pubs near Devizes wharf, just 3 locks (or a short walk) up from here and a brilliant local shop, just off the towpath one lock down, as well as a nice cafe serving food on the flight itself.

A canalside pub that doesn't allow boaters! Avoid. Very rude and inhospitable manager. Moored up to have a meal and a drink with my family and was turned away. Why have a pub on the canalside of you're not allowing boaters? Maybe the manager should take on a town centre pub instead!

Absolutely disgusting attitude that the management has towards the boating community. Apparently the narrowboats spoil the views of the canal, and the management don't want them to Moor up there. We for one won't set Foot in here again until the management issues a formal apology to the boating community for their appalling discriminatory outbursts.

If you’re on boat then the managers don’t want you, they want their clients to see the ditch and not boats, rude and stupid since they’re on the canal, new managers please!

I cannot praise the Black Horse Inn enough. The food was delicious; they had something for everyone: a complete carnivore, a fussy child & a vegetarian. The staff were amazing: friendly, efficient & super helpful (the waitress spent an hour trying to get us a taxi.

Often driven past and admired but never had the opportunity to call in. Good, very friendly staff. Premises Covid safe and ample distance to eat in or outside on the canal side. Very good food and huge portion of hand cut ham, egg and chips. They have a wide selection of pizza's too! Will definitely be back and recommend to readers and others

In common with other customers, I do not understand the negative reviews. My wife and I came to this restaurant on our wedding anniversary. We wanted a nice walk along the canal side (Caen Hill Lock Flight) and a good meal at a canal-side restaurant. We got both.The Covid-safe status of the restaurant was spot-on, with (unlike many other supposedly "Covid-safe"establishments) tables visibly taken out to retain 2-metre safe-distancing. We got there at 12pm and the service was speedy. It did fill up as we were approaching desert and this did take a tad longer to arrive but nothing unacceptable.The food was excellent (and we are picky) and the service just as good. Not sure what else people require?I'd recommend this restaurant.

After a long and exhausting walk in the sun by the canal, my wife and I decided to stop for a quick beer at The Black Horse. That turned out to be a good decision. It says it all in the title, beer was good, I recommend the 6x, so we decided to stay for our dinner. Food was good, we went for the fish & chips, and the service was excellent.

I totally don't understand the poor reviews of this restaurant. I have visited on numerous occasions and found Francis and Ann Marie very hospitable, the food is great. Don't take my word for it.....try it for yourself!!

Terrible customer service. Had a table booked for lunch. Got to the pub to be told - no food today. No chef. No apology. No nothing. Awful. They had our number and could have called. Disgusting. Will never return and I have told all friends not to either!

Spent a lovely sunny evening sat outside beside the canal with 7 friends. Good choice of ciders & beers. Menu was limited but the pizzas were absolutely lovely. Waitress was prompt & friendly. Only negative comment was the lady behind the bar,she was not at all friendly or welcoming & I feel that was such a shame. The experience would of been 10/10 but for this one issue. Yes the pub was busy but it doesn’t take a lot to smile & be welcoming.

We arrived early one Sunday lunchtime, parked up as the board outside advertised "good food". With the lovely canal side location we were looking forward to a warm welcome and a varied menu. We got neither. The landlady completely ignored us as we walked in, the landlord did his best but there was a distinct "atmosphere" between them both!! We asked about food and were told "no, not doing food today". We decided to have coffees instead. We were told to wait for the landlady to do them. She was heard muttering "I'm not taking these coffees out to them" by that she meant the customers in the beer garden. The landlord could be clearly heard to be remonstrating with her!!! We eventually received our coffees without a hint of a smile and took them outside. I must say it was the worst coffee I'd ever had! Not sure what she'd done with it but it was like dishwater!! The landlady clearly needs to rethink her career choice. Even if having a bad day the customer should not be aware of it!!! So in summary, a fantastic location and great potential missed!!

Very disappointing. We were looking forward to our first meal out since lockdown. We pre booked a table for 8pm. When we arrived at 7.45 we went to the bar and explained we had pre booked and we’re told a table would be cleared for us outside. We were then invited to order a drink which we did and went to our table. We asked for a menu which we were told was in the bar. We went to the bar and got the menu and proceeded to choose what to order, the waitress then came to us to announce there was no food left. Apparently a large group had been earlier and there was no food left. She said sorry and that was it. We had PRE BOOKED a table for a meal! There was no mention of the lack of food on arrival prior to ordering And paying for drinks etc. No one called to advise us prior to arriving and also no form of hospitality for the inconvenience and disappointment caused. Very very disappointing indeed and we won’t return any time soon. Such a shame as it’s a lovely setting with lots of potential.

Found the new owners very friendly and helpful. Food is excellent.Have visited numerous times but on four of these occasions all at lunch times they were not serving food, this is frustrating, you walk in and the bar attendant says not serving food until this evening, no notice, it may be helpful to put a board outside if you are not serving food on a particular lunch time.

Last time we stopped here we said never to have a meal here again. Glad to say that it has been taken over & the meals are worth going back for just leave space for the sweets!!!. New landlords means a revamp and upgrade, dispensing with the “Jez Cooper Experience”, thankfully, but retaining the excellent ale and vastly improving the quality of the food. Much more cozy and the Sunday lunches look especially tempting.

This was our first visit to the Black Horse since it’s new owners,it’s a great setting right on the Kennet and Avon Canel although you can’t really appreciate it on a cold February day,but that didn’t matter as we had a really nice lunch,they have a good variety of the usual pub food at reasonable prices,there were three of us and we all enjoyed our meals,the service was very friendly and efficient,we will definitely go again probably on a Sunday as their Sunday roast sound delicious.

We visited this pub (whilst on a short break from our own) Having read the glowing reviews from local residents re the new landlord and landlady & were certainly not disappointed.We and our 3 spaniels had a lovely welcome from both the owners and locals and had an excellent lunch with great value.We will definitely return next time we are in the area.Thank you.

5 of us attended Sunday lunch never visited the pub previously we were totally blown away by the great menu the quality of the food was amazing cooked to perfection and served by brilliant waitresses nothing was any trouble to them the quality and amount of food served per plate is more than sufficient to satisfy most appetites the price including dessert came to approx £15 per head with reduced rates for youngsters IBelieve in all the years of Sunday lunches in Devizes this was the best by far I have had oh and to top it off the beer was fantastic as well

Wow wow wow !! Arrived early but our table was waiting and set up , drinks ordered and delivered to the table , My dad's opinion on the IPA , clean , clear and great , beautiful wine. 3 meats on offer along with braised beef steak which both my parents had who said it was so tender it melted in the mouth and it was huge ! The pork was amazing but more so for us 2 vegetarians the bake with leeks , peppers , sweet potatoes, red onions , walnuts in a creamy sauce with cheese , well I can not tell you how good it was ( this came with all the same sides as the made Yorkshire and jug after jug of gravy , my favourite , The parsnips ! Every single plate was cleared ! Not that there was really any room for puddings as the portions were immense but we had to try , sticky toffee puddings and crème brulé , again totally awesome and clearly made in house. It's not all about the food , the service was impeccable , our waitress Megan was so attentive , welcoming , and genuinely nothing was too much trouble for her , a total asset to the pub. We will be going back as often as possible , As a family we could not recommend visiting here enough and we will be back to try the daytime / evening week menu.

Booked a table this afternoon for two of us and we hadn’t been there since the new owners had taken over but goodness me we had such a warm welcome and the service was amazing. Very friendly pub serving decent good pub food. We visited on a bank holiday just after 6pm and it was very quiet. Food was good and a misunderstanding regarding the food order was dealt with promptly. Would visit again but perhaps when it’s a bit busier.

Previous experience of the Black Horse had been un-welcoming atmosphere, grumpy service and food taking ages to arrive. Today we had a Sunday lunch in a very different atmosphere. Warmly welcomed, shown to our table, nice staff, menu and food fine (tho' the toasties and parsnips were a bit underdone). Generous "small" portions. Long delay after dessert order taken, but copious apologies given and my coffee was made complimentary.

We went for a Sunday roast due to the pub being taken over recently by new owners. Lovely ‘homey’ roast, very reasonably priced as good portion sizes. It is also very dog friendly.

We live along the road from the black horse and love nothing more than having somewhere to eat / drink after a walk with our dog.

After moving back to the area we were excited about the new takeover as the Black Horse is in an area without much competition. We had eaten prior to the takeover and the food was a let down given how much potential the pub has.
