We had the best experience! The food was delicious but the service was even better ! The lady was very professional but absolutely friendly and made us laugh all the time. The table had all cutlery - for starters, soup, main, desert laid out and it was such a nice experience and a change compared to most of the restaurants in the UK. We will definitely visit again.

What a marvellous hidden gem! Called for dinner last night (20th) and what an experience. Superb food, great atmosphere. The two hosts (sisters Sara & Lisa) were excellent hosts: knowledgeable, chatty and welcoming. An absolute joy, and a definite "must return"! Already looking forward to it.

A Delightful Restaurant owned and run by two very friendly Sisters. Home grown vegetables are included on the menu with all meals cooked from scratch. A desert trolley groaning with a large selection of deserts that took me right back to a rare dining out Italian in the '60's and '70's. Very much a comfortable home from home experience.

It’s difficult to know where to start. The sauce on the mushrooms was thick and gloopy with uncooked flour and no taste blue cheese. The gammon in congealed sauce was cold and when asked to reheat came back in a minute or so the same. The steak was poor quality and served only with two small tomatoes, half a mushroom and. a small bag of chips. It was not cooked as requested. The ratatouille was peas with some bits of onion. The carrots and sautéed potatoes were unappetising. I would not have fed the food to my dogs! When I mentioned our dissatisfaction to the owner, she said that they would learn from my comments! A very expensive mistake.

Terrible food. The place has really gone down hill. I used to love the food there. We were served stale garlic bread made from leftover ends of bread and charged £18 for two people...I had egg mayonnaise starter with prawns and salmon. The egg was discolour as was not fresh and the salad must have been sitting in the fridge for days. My friend also experienced similarities to her meal although we had different food. No effort to the good old traditional italian food that used to be served. Very over priced. Most certainly will not be going there again nor making recommendations for the place...such a shame!

Can’t believe how long I’ve lived in the area and only just discovered this place! Incredible Carvery, great value for money (under £10 and a choice of 5 meats). Wine delicious and very reasonably priced. Plus a blinding dessert trolley (I don’t usually get dessert but this was irresistible!) Service was outstanding and the setting was stunning. Looking for any excuse to come back already...

Authentic Italian quality menu and a great selection of drinks with one excellently kept and served real ale and a real cider. Food an absolute delight and the dairy allergy that one of us has wa expertly accommodated and plenty of alternatives offered (and accepted!). Thank you, our time with you was delightful. Came here with friends on recommendation, its well off the beaten track but is a lovely drive through small lane in Kentish countryside. A warm welcome awaits and we had drinks at the bar, we then had the Carvery roast lunch which was really good. Huge joint of meat and plenty of choice, beef, pork, gammon and more ! The veggies were good too. Generous portions of tasty, well cooked meat and veg. After a small ‘rest’ we found room the the amazing dessert trolley, crammed with a huge array of homemade puds :) Will definitely be back - thank you

Oh My Goodness!A real, old fashioned dessert trolley, from which there was definitely no stinting on the portions. I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven! As soon as we walked through the door of this warm and friendy, family-run, Anglo-Italian pub, I saw the trolley and decided to skip a starter to leave plenty of room for pud. Then I saw someone enjoying the home-made pate and decided to just undo the button on my trousers instead and enjoy all three courses. The pate was so delicious I'd have liked to buy a bucketful of it to take home. The calf's liver just melted in my mouth. And as for the trolley of my dreams ... Well, I just about managed to stop myself climbing onto it and claiming it as "Mine, All Mine"!I decided on the Tiramisu, while my dining companions plumped for Pannacotta and the yummy-looking artisan cheeses. At the risk of repeating myself ... It was Heaven!Next time I visit, I shall eat nothing the day before so I've plenty of room for all this gorgeous fare. Oh, and maybe I'll buy some trousers with an elasticated waistband!

I treated my partner to lunch at the Black Horse last week; our first visit but certainly not our last and worth the journey down from Bromley. A varied and interesting menu, very friendly waitress, Carmel, and a delicious variety of desserts. Enjoyed the Italian influence and getting the chance to practise my Italian. We sat outside overlooking the garden and the view across open fields. A really lovely lunch at a very reasonable price.Highly recommended.

We spent the night in this pub that was advertised as a pub with campsite. The campsite was the corner of a gravel car park with limited facilities and electricity at £8 per night. Dogs were not welcome in the bar which is unusual for a country pub. Lovely staff and very good food but was quite expensive.

There's just no rush whatsoever in being shown to your table and choosing your meal from the lovely range available on the menu. Service is brilliant from the Italian owners and the menu is also predominantly Italian. The sweet trolley is to die for, being so difficult to choose from such a wide variety of superb desserts. We have been going the the Italian Evening with friends for a few years now. Every third Friday of each month. This was obviously our first visit this year. Last year the owner lost his battle with a serious illness which was very sad for all those at knew him and devastating for the family and staff. However, like the true professionals the family are you are always made extremely welcome on arrival. During the evening you are treated to an excellent 3 course meal with a choice for various starters and mains to suit all tastes followed by an absolute mouth watering deserts trolley also included is a bottle of wine to share between two and all for less than £23 per head. It’s a no brainier. We always enjoy the evening and last night was no exception. It is also nice to meet old friends. If you are thinking of going then it advisable to book first because it is very popular.

This place is bizarre, it's like Fawlty Towers set in a country pub. Initially you need to navigate your way around the unwelcoming rules of the place (no food in the garden, except for in the designated special eating area, which you must access through a door next to the toilet...NOT the patio door in the pub). I ordered a rare rib-eye steak (£17.90 not including potatoes or chips (an extra £3 on top)) what turned up was a thin soggy piece of meat which was greyish beige to its core. I'm sure this depressing steak would have been served up as the sirloin, fillet or rib-eye from the menu, it resembled none of the three. I sent it back. A new steak came back in a similar woeful condition (come on people...a cow actually died for this!) I ate this one so as not to cause a fuss as we were in a group having a lovely time. My chips made a late appearance as I reluctantly ate the penultimate mouthful of grey meat. Despite detailed and precise notes with names being taken on order, it seems there was a massive chip confusion in the kitchen, probably swept up in the spiralling steak confusion. On leaving I complained, but the management didn't see any problem with the quality of their food, or their ordering system. Just gave me a load of patronising excuses (i'm sure they'll reply to this review with a further string of them). They offered me a token £5 refund from my £44 bill. Thanks guys! If I'd paid £6 for this steak and chips in a greasy spoon I would have thought fair enough, but if you pay gastropub prices, you expect gastropub quality...both in produce and cooking. There is obviously a very good reason why this beautiful country pub with a great garden is practically empty on a sunny Saturday lunchtime...over priced poor quality food. However, the kids enjoyed the playground, and we very much enjoyed the farce.

We have supported this public house for a number of years, having carveries and food from their lovely menu. It is with regret that we have to say that we went for a family carvery on Sunday and we were very disappointed for several reasons. The crockery appears to have been changed and your Sunday lunch plate is much smaller than previously and the amount of food offered to you by the hosts is far less. Please don't get me wrong but I used to look forward to diving in and clearing my plate but on this occasion all of our meals looked greatly reduced leaving us all agreeing that it wasn't value for money at £9.95 per head. The food is well cooked and tastes wonderful, for us this time, there just wasn't a lot of it even for my wife who is the smallest of eaters. Puddings were as lovely as ever. I was also disappointed when settling the bill in full I handed the over my card plus a generous £10 tip to the member of staff and this was not acknowledged in anyway at all - no thank you - she just took it without comment. Every occasion we have been here we have felt welcomed and the staff have been attentive and we have enjoyed the food etc however on this occasion it did not live up to our expectations and this was a real shame as three of us were celebrating our birthdays there together.

This a traditional Italian family run English country pub - and it is a great mix. Traditional Italian from home-made meatballs to calves liver to Pannetone puddings combine with mismatched ancient furniture, bar billairds and beer and dining area from a provincial hotel in the 1950s. We are moving to the area soon, so we decided to try a different pub in or around Sellindge every other week. Today 4/5/2017 the Black Horse was on the list. We drove up from Ashford and came down some lovely country lanes through the back-roads of Monks Horton to finally reach the Black Horse (there are easier ways to get there if you want to).The first thing we noticed (me and my partner) was the lovely welcome we got given by the host. She was professional and friendly, explained the menu to us and let me taste the two bitters they had on draft (two little samples). We liked the Italian style menu, as it is different from your normal pub food (the thing we normally look for is different food to the average pub). We started with a seafood sharing platter which was delicious, wel spiced and lots of fish for us to dig in to, it could've done with some bread but we decided not to as we had a big main course to follow.I decided to order an Italian specialty (slow cooked lamb) never knew it was an Italian special until the owner (I assume he was) came over and explained where he was from and that my choice of main was the best choice on the menu. After having my first few bites, I had to agree with the owners comment that; it was delicious, tender and exactly what I was looking for. My partner had the scampi's in cream sauce which looked nice and after trying some of her dish I agreed that the choice she made was again, a good one.Ended the dinner with a coffee (good coffee as the Italians do) and got a very friendly goodbye from the host and owner. I will definitely come again and would happily try any other specialties the owner/host recommends. If you are looking for a restaurant in a beautiful location with a different menu to what you normally try than I highly recommend visiting the Black Horse. Ps. we will be back

Not many options when having a carvery. Me and my partner both got the gammon, we had to leave most of it as most of it was fat. Have to admit the amount of meats they have on offer were excellent but I was completely dissatisfied with the amount of extras compared to other restaurants I have been to for a carvery. From what I can remember all they had on offer was carrots, cabbage, parsnips and gravy. Stuffing was horrid, Yorkshire pudding wasn't very nice at all and we had to leave most of the meal. Definitely not worth the £9.95. It also costs £5 to go up again. Waitress was lovely but we will definitely not be returning or recommending.

Have just got back from a very good Sunday lunch at the Black Horse. It is the first time I have been there and consider it a "find", though clearly it is very popular and I can see why. The welcome was very cheery and the Italian owner could not have been friendlier. We were going to have a starter but when we saw the piles of food on the plates of those leaving the carvery area we changed our minds. I am very glad we did as the serving was extremely generous and I had to stop them putting more food on my plate as although I have a large appetite I doubted whether I could eat it all. In general I am not a fan of carveries and my heart sunk slightly when I realised that this is one on Sundays, but this was enough to change my mind particularly as the beef was beautifully rare and the accompanying vegetables were beautifully cooked. I am currently looking for the best Sunday roast in the area and I would say that this, if not the best, is certainly the best value and most generous I have discovered so far (the best is twice this price.) The only downside is that it does not accept dogs, which while understandable, is personally frustrating.

Went in a party of 6 for a lunch mid week. Starters a bit overpriced for what you got. I chose belly pork from the Specials board. Loads of vegetables supplied for the table. Best belly pork I have had. Dessert choice was vast - had a mixture of 2 as could not decide. Drinks reasonably priced compared to many other restaurants who seem to charge ridiculous amounts. Staff all attentive and friendly.

We decided to try here after reading the reviews on trip advisor a local family run company offering a carvery reviews made it sound lovely!!!!!We arrived at 12 on Sunday they had just opened and we were the first ones through the door a group of staff was around the bar some in front some behind a lady looked up and my wife said we had a table booked the lady indicated to one of the lads that it was in his section and after up righting himself of f the bar he took us to the table. We was handed a folded piece of paper with starters on the front and deserts on the rear. It was cold in there and there was no atmosphere no music and certainly no warm welcome from the staff.Once we was all seated drinks orders were taken the young lad taking the orders didn't really seem to know what wines they had and had to disappear on two occasions to ask if they had Shiraz or Pinot noir. ( they had neither)Anyway drinks aside then onto the food we asked if it was only the carvery that was available for mains today. Guess what he didn't know so off he went to ask again only to return and say it was only roast available. Ok so we will all have roast then the lad serving looked confused as he looked around the table so I reiterated we would all have roast 6 adults three children. He returned with a raffle ticket which we needed to give them at the carvery counter. At the carvery counter there was a gentleman waiting to serve us infact he was the first member of staff that had said hello to us could things be about improve .......... No!!!I asked for turkey and gammon the bloke looked at me like I had asked for all the meats but reluctantly cut me a few slices of each at the meat counter I could tell the difference between the turkey and the gammon due to the insipid colours of them both. I even asked my father in law what was what and he looked at me blankly!!The plates are large tea plate small dinner plate size. Next I was moved onto a lady server who offered potatoes (clearly not freshly cooked) cauliflower cheese, cardboard Yorkshire pudding (only one allowed!!) and something described as stuffing ( to be honest it looked more like they had been recently decorating and had come wallpaper paste left over!!!)Anyway onwards to server number three yep this ain't no self service carvery I believe all the staff had worked in the same orphanage as Oliver as rations were strict and more was chargeable for (second visit is £5). Vegetables on offer carrots, Brussels and Parsnips. You had to tell them what vegetables you wanted they did not offer each one there was also so random Mediterranean vegetable thing. Gravy was help yourself hooray but the serving spoon was more a teaspoon sized ladle!!Condiments yes they had these they were back at the beginning of the queue behind everyone who was queueing up!!Back at the table I tucked into my roast putting aside all the above it must be good the reviews said so....Gammon - goodYorkshire pudding - my kids have made more edible things out of paper macheTurkey - This had been cooked and either chilled or frozen the reheated and was inedibleCarrots - hardParsnips - okBrussel sprouts - sold to local fisher man as ledger weightsRoast potatoes- hardVery disappointing My son had cheese pasta that was the veggie option on the roast which was awful being Italian owners I would have thought they have had the old pasta thing all sewn up. Seems the only thing this place is stitching up is the customers.I asked for another pot of tea the young guy disappeared then reappeared to take the first pot back to refill appears they only have two tea pots!I looked around and the place was busy but mainly with pensioners I can only come to the assumption that due to the pub being in the middle of the countryside and there being nothing else around the elderly and infirm have no where else to go so are stuck going here. They also won't clear any plates until everyone has finished so I sat for about 20 minutes with an empty plate in front of me.Finally the bill and we were out of there yep even that was wrong we were charged £9.95 for the adult meals not the £8.95 it states in the website.A word of advice if a place is fully booked for a Sunday roast weeks in advance its good if you can book a table for 6 adults and 3 kids the day before run a mile.

Went here for a roast with the family today based on trip advisor reviews, well really wished I hadn't staff didn't let us sit down before wanting our drinks order, starters are £7:99 each! Roast was the worst I've ever had out and my family and I eat out at least twice a week, they serve all the food including the veg with a frown if you ask for any more they even ask how many roast potatoes and when I said 4 she threw 2 reasonable size then prodded about for the smallest roast I've ever seen! Carrots Brussels and parsnips. The only good thing was the choice of meats. Took my baby grandson to change him. Not one dribble of soap in either dispenser in the ladies, got really dirty look from staff when I asked if someone could please get me some they were too busy robbing all the elderly local people that were queuing with their raffle tickets for a plate full of flavourless over priced (by the way the roast is more expensive than website says) I really suggest if you love a roast then don't go here!!!

Had a fabulous meal here with family on a Thursday evening in November 2016. Excellent and friendly service. The food (with a very extensive menu) was excellent. There were seven of us and we made a variety of different choices and all of us agreed that our meals were extremely good. We had starters, main meal and desserts and everyone happy with all of them. Will definitely go again.

Where to start...ok so visited here for a carvery after seeing a promising amount of stars on trip advisor. I really don't know how they have had so many happy customers for the carvery. The carvery is plated by the staff so you cannot choose how much of the selection you want on your plate or if you want more/less of a particular item. You have to pay an extra £5 per visit to the counter after your initial plate of food so make sure you ask them to fill up the plate on your initial visit or be left feeling dissapointed for a £10 roast dinner. The food itself was uninviting and generally tasteless. Roast potatos were undercooked and not crispy in the slightest, the meat selection was 'chewy', fatty and gristly. The 'stuffing' was a pale blob of tasteless wallpaper paste. My partner is vegetarian and the only option instead of a meat was tomato pasta which in itself is a weird combination to have with roast vegetable and Yorkshire pudding. The tomato pasta was boring anyway which for an Italian run restaurant is surprising. As for the rest of the veg, I wouldn't bother with any of it as is generally tasteless and lackluster of any real flavor. The reason I gave it 2 stars as opposed to 1 is that I was hungry and it filled a hole but apart from that we will not be visiting again. Also the staff were quite nice and helpful.

A favourite place we hadn't visited for a little while so went with parents & friends on a busy Saturday eve. Despite how busy it was & the food took a little longer than normal to arrive, service was still good, & as importantly, Food was perfect. Well worth the wait & glad it wasn't rushed out.

It's always nice to meet up with friends and family for dinner in a lovely setting like this. They have a large garden with play equipment for the children and it was bustling - I thought this was a good sign, but unfortunately my optimism wasn't to last. Whilst queuing for the carvery (yes I'm vegetarian but I love a roast dinner) and carrying a baby in my arms my turn came 'No meat, thank you, just roasties and Yorkshire please' my friend offered to take the baby as she had her meal and as I turned back to the counter another customer pushed me aside. I said to the man serving veg that I'd asked for roasties and a Yorkshire and he said I had to queue at the meat counter (they're inches apart!) I replied that 'I already had and that these people were now being served instead of me'So I finally get some roasties and a Yorkshire, cauliflower cheese, carrots, parsnips and cabbage with celery in it (they serve you - portion control). Maybe I was spoilt when we went to the Neptune pub and carvery because you could help yourself to large selection of vegetables. Anyway it tasted fine just disappointed by the experience. Maybe the meat is amazing!!!Anyway I'm glad I was with friends. It was a very long wait for the desserts trolley - we had to flag a waiter down and ask for it - I had lemon meringue pie. Comparing it to the ones I've had at Muffin Break (iceburgs) the meringue was a bit flat and the lemon had no zing.So overall the poor service may have soured my judgement but I probably won't return any time soon! Hubby said it was acceptable but overpriced!

We visited with some friends having heard some excellent reports about the Sunday carvery. Pub was very busy on arrival which we thought was a good sign. The queue for the carvery was slow and the table with sauces, condiments etc. was placed behind the queue so anyone wishing to get to this table had to ask people to move. The chef didn't like comments about the meat being undercooked. The portions were not overly generous, unable to help yourself to anything including poor selection of vegetables. Gravy not great, it could have doubled up as dish water. Our daughter loves roast dinners and even she was put off by the gravy. At no point did anyone ask if all was OK with our meals. We had been told to leave room for the fabulous desserts but to be honest these were not up to expectation and you could tell some had been out on the trolley for some time. We were asked if we would like coffees by a young waiter, one of us asked for a filter coffee but was told 'we don't do that' and that was it. We had to go and find someone to ask for the bill which we paid in cash, notes in the black wallet with the loose change plus tip on top, only to have the bar manager approach us and advise we had underpaid the bill as the notes inside did not quite cover the bill. Horrified, we advised her which member of staff had taken the ALL the money but we still felt like they did not believe us. None of our party will return here and we will not ever recommend it.

I've been here a number of times and, when asked to book a restaurant for a birthday lunch, didn't hesitate. As usual we were not disappointed. The main difficulty was choosing from the extensive and appetising menu. The food was excellently prepared, served piping hot and very tasty and the dessert trolley was, as usual, not to be missed (this is not the place to go if you are not prepared to forget the diet for one day!). The service and atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and two of our party who had not been before said it was the best meal in a restaurant they could remember. Congratulations to the lovely Italian family who run this very traditional bar and restaurant in the middle of beautiful countryside.

We went for Sunday lunch. An excellent roast. A lovely choice of various Italian themed starters, then some excellently roasted meats - any combination of beef, turkey, lamb, pork and gammon - and finally a magnificent choice of truly wonderful desserts. All in a lovely typical country pub restaurant with marvellous, friendly and efficient service. And on top of all that, a great European atmosphere - Italian, Portuguese and English people working here, who could even speak Spanish as well.

Came highly recommended by some friends and I was really disappointed. Very friendly but the staff looked terrified of putting a foot wrong, it was unbearably hot in there, no windows open, awful to sit and eat in. Meat was ok lots of choice, but very poor selection of veg and hard to eat, all dished out for you, no help yourself, no regular stuffing, some weird looking watery stuff. Sweet trolley being pushed around with some melting puddings on it. Overpriced and wouldn't recommend or visit again.

A wonderful place to find and have dinner. Italian is the menu bias, but you won't find pizza on their menu. Wonderful staff that knew the food, and the menu and were very engaging, and patient, in explaining their dishes. Recommend the wild boar with a rhubarb sauce, Then, we were taken nicely back 30 years as they produced an old fashioned (to me at least) sweet trolley, they call it the Trolley of Temptation, and it certainly was. Truly a nice place to have a meal. The bar is friendly too.

Went for lunch today with friends, it's been ages since we were last there for lunch. The lunchtime menu was very good with a great selection for everyone. After the meal it was obvious what we had been missing and my wife and I commented that we would no leave it too long before we went again. You are always made so welcome when you visit and the staff are brilliant. It is certainly the place to go for lunch if you are passing or in the area.

Visited this restaurant for the second time recently. When you arrive you are greeted with warm, friendly smiles and great service. The food is absolutely delicious and the biggest problem you will have is actually choosing what dishes you want as there is such a wonderful choice. A special mention should go to Stephanie whose service is brilliant and who is clearly passionate about the food on offer, particularly the cheeseboard (take note Abbotts Fireside!!).There is a nice decking area outside to have a drink and, whilst the interior is a bit dated, the food and service absolutely make up for it. We will definately be returning and have no hesitation in recommending this place.

The food, setting and hospitality at The Black Horse are all top-notch. We were a table of seven, including two children. Every dish was stunning (and there is a wide selection), and we were blown away by the quality of the food. The hospitality from the owners was excellent - warm, friendly and welcoming. We cannot praise the all-round experience highly enough. Prices are very reasonable, particularly given the quality.

Shocking experience tonight, a Wednesday evening, ordered on just eat for delivery. The restaurant phone us to say they don’t deliver to our address even though it’s all gone through on just eat. Then they say ok they can do it. An hour later we are still wondering where our food is, I rang the restaurant and spoke to a young girl who didn’t have a single clue about anything and had no phone customer service at all. The manager then grabbed the phone with an abrupt “hello I am the manger” and stated the delivery driver couldn’t find our address (not had this issue before) and the pizza went cold so she went back and they are making a new order to deliver with a different driver which will be another half an hour. No one thought to ring us and let us know? I cancelled the order because waiting an hour and a half for a pizza on a Wednesday night with a rude manager and useless staff is absurd.

Struggling for a venue for a girls night out where we could hear ourselves over any noise - this was a brilliant choice. Food was superb, Service was excellent and discreet - but the biggest surprise was just how busy it was on a Tuesday night in central Ashford - all venues around looked empty or only 1 or 2 tables occupied - that must give you an indication as to the quality of this restaurant. We will be back again - and thank you!
