The Black Horse in Cambridge

We are a group of older Ramtonians , who have mostly left the village much earlier in life .Latterly we have held a reunion at THE BLACK HORSE , and our numbers are around 40 in total . We meet at twelve and food , in buffet form is served from around 1 o’clock . THIS YEAR This year we were greeted by a very friendly and professional couple , Ella And Joe . The food was laid out beautifully and well presented. It looked , and indeed was very tasty and interesting. Everyone of the gathering enjoyed it and remarked on how nice it was. Everyone was able to be seated and everyone remarked n how clean and comfortable the venue was. Needless to say but we have booked again for next year . Thank you so much Ella and Joe . This one review should be considered as 40 reviews really .

What a lovely pub. Joe and Ella were the perfect hosts - attentive and cheery. The food was amazing - think tapas and lots of it. And with real fires, a real Christmas tree, being dog friendly and arriving to a pony in the car park it was the perfect lunch . Thank you x

We stopped on our way to Norfolk having seen the excellent reviews on line. The service was superb and I was offered a wide selection of gluten free beers. The gardens offered shade and peace on a particularly warm day sitting beneath a lovely tree in the shade. Our food arrived promptly and it was delicious so I can highly recommend the tapas. This was a great pit stop and we will definitely go back as soon as we are next in the area. I’d say it is well worth going out of your way to visit this place.

Decided to check out the new tapas menu available, we were not disappointed! Really delicious food, great atmosphere and very friendly landlord and landlady. Highly recommended.

Stayin in Cambridge but decided to drive out to Rampton to get away from the city for a while. Good decision.... Lovely, friendly village pub. Good selection of beers and a menu with something for everyone. I had the home made chicken & leek pie which was delicious. My wife had the garlic chicken wrap which also hit the spot. Great little pub doing it right, thank you.

This Christmas meal is the best we have had in a pub/restaurant. The produce was superb (local Turkey was so moist) and clearly cared for by the chef. Everything on our plates was fresh. No frozen vegs,potatoes or yorkshires. Our plates were sent back empty-11 of us. Started and desserts were plentiful and delicious. The staff were professional and very attentive, nothing too much trouble. I cannot recommend this pub enough.

Following the amazing reviews we booked for Sunday lunch . Very disappointing and cold food. Didn’t feel much atmosphere and considering so near Christmas nothing Christmasy about the meal. It was such a shame as so looking forward to it. Maybe just an off day .

We had such a lovely meal at The Black Horse. The food was superb and the service was great. Definitely recommend this little pub for either a drink or a meal.

Enjoyed dinner out with friends on a Saturday night. Laura is a brillaint host who makes you feel very welcome. Every need is met with a smile. The food was delicious! I enjoyed melt in the mouth pork belly with a very good dauphinois potatoes and sauteed cabbage. Would happily eat that every week. The home made steak & Ale Pie was also very, very good as was the sirloin steak. Highly reccomend if you like a warm welcome and a high standard of tasty food - reasonably price too. We have recently moved to the area, and frequent the pub a couple of times a week, either for a pint, a lunch or to try the food trucks on a Thursday night. The staff are briliant, friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and part of the community. Highly recommend for both food and a nice drink in a friendly atmosphere.

Fantastic experience from start to finish. Customer service was brilliant, beer was perfect (Timmy Taylor's) and the food top notch. I've eaten a few burgers in my time and this was up there with some of the best. Well done Black Horse team.

Seeking a village pub with non fussy food we tried The Black Horse. The homemade soup of the day was mushroom and was delicious. For main courses we had steak and a homemade pie respectively. Steak was cooked exactly as requested and came with good skin on chips, mushroom, fresh tasting onion rings and lovely cherry tomatoes on the vine. The pie of the day was made with plenty of delicious filling (chicken/mushroom),tasted genuinely homemade and came with a generous portion of broccoli and some gravy. The kitchen was happy to substitute chips for mashed potatoes at my request. Afterwards we had sticky toffee pud and a delicious treacle tart. So this was not gourmet food but it was very tasty food and just what we were hoping to find. The serving and bar staff are very friendly and welcoming. The pub is simply decorated, clean and comfortable in gastropub style. All in all quite a find and I hope to return.

New management & went with my Mum to have Sunday Lunch. The food was very good & the staff friendly & helpful. Mum has been again & I'm sure I will sometime soon too.

A lovely old pub and very helpful people. But such slow service; we were there with a couple of 90+ year olds and they found the hard wooden seats a bit unforgiving. I expect it was because we were there on a Bank Holiday Monday...

The food was lovely, however? I asked for an extra Yorkshire pudding for my little one and I was charged a £1. Also one very small dish of cauliflower cheese between 5 seemed a little stingy. I feel that the desserts are also over priced.

Evening meal for 4. Good choice of food and drinks . Food is of highest quality . Staff following Covid rules and tables are well spaced out. We ate inside but had choice of outside if preferred.The blue cheese arancini starter was outstanding.

Top quality and very tasty roast dinner. Lamb, beef & pork all melt in the mouth tasty deliciousness. Me and my family had fish and chips, good delivery service. The fish was tasteless, chips nothing special and it wasn’t a large portion. For £8 it’s bad value for money. Disappointing

First breakfast here (had quite a few lunches & dinners!) & was very impressed - I went with my mum & we both had the eggs royale which was perfect. Coffee was served almost immediately which was very welcome too.Only criticism is that it was a bit too cold in the restaurant to be able to take our coats off - the radiator near us was cold - you need to look at this Harry as I’ve also heard other people put off as they’ve been a bit cold too!

Enjoyed a nice meal served piping hot with polite and efficient service. The menu offered a good choice albeit the wine list is limited. Would recommend for a casual meal as opposed to a special celebration although overall the ambience lacked the vibrance of diners enjoying themselves.

A great evening at this pub,Game night.In conjunction with Cambridge wine merchants,we were served spectacular food and great wines for tastings.Starters of partridge,so beautifully presented, mains of Succulent tender venison and refreshing apple dessert.The menu was set and at a set price with wines.Good to have wines explained by member of CWM and really nice to have chef speak to us afterwards,Brilliant idea,lots of good food,wines and company,Very good service too.This venue never ceases to please us.

Just came back from breakfast, which is available every Saturday. The full English was very good. Many other options to choose from also, including vegan. Service was quick and friendly as well. The village of Rampton is worth the visit; be sure to see the quaint Norman thatched Church of All Saints while there.

We had not been to the pub for a number of years and decided to try it again for a sunday roast.We had roast pork which was very nice , plentiful and accompanied by lovely vegetables. Our desert was apple crumble and ice cream.The staff were very friendly and the pub had a nice atmosphere.We'll be visiting again.

Found myself at the Black Horse again this evening and arrived to a busy bar with a great atmosphere. Lovely and warm I didn’t even notice the torrential rain until it was time to leave. As always the service at the bar was great and every time I go I see and smell the food and it always seems amazing. A great country pub, always clean and tidy, great staff what more could you ask for ?

Exceptionally good food served here. Fresh, tasty and piping hot. All prepared by the owner/manager Harry apparently. He obviously is putting his heart and soul into it. Yesterday me, my wife and teenage son had battered haddock, salmon fillet and roast chicken. It was Sunday lunch and by the time we left at 1.45pm, there weren’t many free tables left, so I’d book well in advance. Also, staff are really friendly. It’s quite upmarket but definitely not snooty - and reasonable prices.

Needed a decent restaurant and refered to Trip Advisor and saw the rating for the Black Horse. Visited and had a superb evening meal - Starters x2 Mains x2 and all brilliant not good brilliant. The member of staff was exceptional. She was efficient and knowledgable. Extremely pleasant and checked that everything was correct - It most certainly was. Brilliant

As a person who has to rearrange every menu to fit my dietary needs, Harry could not have been more helpful. I always feel bad for asking for things to be left out/changed but the meal I was presented with was just perfect.

Fabulous fish finger sandwich at our local this weekend. Always a treat to pop down, breakfast, lunches and dinners all fantastic. Just a short hop off the Guided Busway if you’re cycling. Take a detour and come and see our beautiful village, sample some excellent beers and have a bite to eat! Beer garden and seating out the front which is our personal fav to watch the world go by.

On first glance, the Black Horse Rampton may look like your average village pub but its anything but! I wandered in with two friends on a Friday night, and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff and some incredible cuisine. The restaurant was filling up quickly (it was almost 7:00 pm) but we managed to snag a table.

Saturday evening meal . Super choice on the menu and very good value . Food is of the highest quality and cooked to perfection. The pork , salt beef and mustard Scotch Egg starter is superb. Duck leg is devine. Couple of real ales to choose from , super selection of wine ( very reasonable price) and the Gin selection is excellent. Service very friendly and efficient .

I’ve been a few times since my last review & it just seems to be getting better (if that’s possible!).

So we arrived on a Saturday night 6 of us and initially we thought a limited menu but how wrong were we. The food was stunning. Steaks to die for a burger that was full of flavour, the chicken was so moist. Deserts out of this world.

Ive been back to the Back Horse a few times now including a trip to their beer festival a few weeks ago. My wife was impressed with the selection of gins on offer and the food was excellent. Staff and the Landlord have always been happy, friendly and helpful and i will be visiting again very soon!

Visited today with 3 friends for lunch, and we had outstanding food. It was the first day of Harry's new summer lunch menu and I really wanted to try everything on it! We had a shared mezze starter for 2 which was great and my friends had chicken and chorizo terrine which they said was delicious. 3 of us had sea bream with nicoise salad which was to die for, the fish was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. Everything here is fresh and the presentation is beautiful.We managed dessert once we knew lemon tart was on the menu! All the staff were very nice and friendly and had time for us, especially as it was a busy lunchtime with people making use of the pretty beer garden too! I highly recommend the Black Horse.

Through an acquaintance I heard about a beer fest at the Black Horse and went along on the first day. It was very welcoming, and there was a live band, good quality barbecue food, and a selection of great beers to choose from in marquees in the garden.

I was recommended this restaurant by a friend.

Daughter suggested to go here as they had heard the Sunday lunch’s were beautiful. My daughter wasn’t wrong! Beef was glorious and complemented on a bed of vegetables to die for! My wife had the salmon which she adored & eldest daughter had the pork which was also a massive thumbs up! Deserts were awesome too , All in all a very well ran & friendly atmosphere of a place, would highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates good food.

They accommodated us in spite of me phoning a couple of days before to ask if my vegan daughter could join the party. When we arrived we were essentially on two separate tables so not really able to talk and each thing we asked for they didn't have, tomato juice, diet lemonade, no big drama. One of the staff was lovely, one was clearly not having a good day. The food was OK, veg a little undercooked, meat was great, the cauliflower cheese turned out to be broccoli cheese that was put on the table with no explanation or serving spoons. No condiments offered or provided and there was no vegan option so my daughter had a plate of pasta and no dessert. An argument blew up in the kitchen and the chef appeared to leave. I had high hopes and I really think this could be a great place to go but this wasn't a good day for them. Nevertheless, a little civility from the young lady who was serving us would have made the whole experience not feel so bad, I doubt we'll go again but before we went, I really hoped it would become a regular haunt for me and my family.

I came into the pub for lunch after doing some photography in the area with a friend who recommended The Black Horse to me. I certainly wasn’t disappointed, a classic country pub where even non locals feel welcome. Everyone was polite and the food came out pretty quickly considering the pub was busy.

Highly recommend this resteraunt, the scotch egg of the week were great and the salmon was excellent. All fresh produce and cooked to perfection, good beer and very friendly service, will be very keen to visit again.

Dropped into the Black Horse at Rampton today having heard great things about it. The first thing you notice is how clean and fresh looking it is. The Staff are attentive and helpful, the menu looks great . A big selection of good selection of gins and mixers was a huge plus for the non driver. Sadly we were a little early to eat on this occasion as we had eaten lunch quite late bit the food smelt amazing. But we will be back for food soon as with the summer now here the immaculate and pretty beer garden will be an ideal place to chill out and eat with the dogs snoozing in the sun as the Black Horse is very dog friendly.

Visited whilst spending a couple of days outside Cambridge. Good feel to the place with friendly locals and a lovely host Harry. The ladies on table were also really nice and the food was superb. Scotch egg (best ever), fish cakes (up there), haddock and burger for mains. All fresh, hot and nicely presented. And plenty of it. Well worth a visit for a relaxed village pub serving excellent food.

I can honestly say this was the most lovely, well cooked, fresh tasting roast beef dinner I have ever eaten out. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We walked from Cottenham on recommendation from a friend and weren’t disappointed. We didn’t have dessert but I’m sure that would have been lovely too.

Popped in here on passing for some lunch with friends. Loved the fish and chips, served piping hot. Was such a friendly , got talking to the man behind the bar who took a genuine interest in our conversation.

I've haven't ordered a burger on a menu for years, with good reason. I've seen too many dry crusty looking plates of fodder churned out.

Have been on several occasions, whilst the menu is not extensive the food is always well cooked and very good. Beer battered fish is massive and lovely, as is the pork dish. The deserts, especially the chocolate brownie yum. Would recommend the food, and the staff helpful and friendly. We will be back !

Great meal on Sunday. Very good service from Charlotte and the quality of the food ( and presentation) is superb. The Scotch Egg starters are excellent. Good choice of drinks inc 2 real ales. Food and drink prices represent excellent value for money.Restaurant is nicely set out and was full which is always a good sign. Well worth a visit IMO.

Tuvimos una comida increíble aquí otra vez el fin de semana pasado. Encantador ambiente, el restaurante estaba lleno, te recomendamos reservar una mesa. En cuanto a la comida, es excelente: fresca, claramente casera, muy bien presentada y deliciosa. El menú cambia regularmente para que siempre haya algo nuevo que probar. Éramos una mesa de cuatro, dos adultos y dos niños, y todos muy bien cuidados. Personal atento, excelente servicio. Continuaremos visitando regularmente con seguridad.

Fuimos a una cena familiar el sábado a primera hora de la tarde para cuatro, basada en críticas muy positivas de Trip Advisor y, en general, este pub restaurante estuvo a la altura de los comentarios, con un personal excelente, una decoración agradable, buenos bistecs y carne, además de un excepcional Scotch Egg.

Harry, el chef / propietario nos recibió con una sonrisa amable y acogedora, el pub es un agradable y acogedor pub del pueblo que admite perros y tiene un gran jardín de cerveza. Hay un par de cervezas premium de barril, así como una serie de buenas cervezas que cambian regularmente. La comida es otra cosa sin embargo! Para empezar tuve un huevo escocés y mi compañero tenía macarrones con queso. El huevo escocés te dejará sin aliento, ¡el sabor es perfecto! ¡El mac y el queso igual, el sabor no te lo vas a creer! Para los platos principales tuve una hamburguesa y mi compañero tenía panza de cerdo, nos dijeron que el menú estaba a punto de cambiar, pero estoy convencido de que serán platos increíbles pase lo que pase. Mi hamburguesa estaba casi perfecta, cocinada a la perfección y con un sabor encantador, patatas fritas triples, ligeras y esponjosas con un exterior crujiente. El vientre de cerdo se describió como "wow, esto es increíble", así que supongo que fue bueno. . . Nunca he visto un puré tan perfectamente formado tampoco. Todos los ingredientes frescos y todos recién preparados. ¡Definitivamente regresaré!

He estado aquí para tomar una copa antes y escuché que el domingo el almuerzo fue bueno, así que decidí ir. El menú tenía una buena elección y lo que teníamos era muy bueno, ¡las papas muy mantecosas! Estaban demasiado llenos para el postre, pero saben que tenían algunos para elegir. Un lugar pequeño, pero supongo que ha sido decorado como muy brillante y limpio, pero sentía que el lugar solo necesitaba unos cuantos pedacitos adicionales para llenar la barra y las paredes. Went for our first Sunday lunch at this great little pub.As always, fantastic food and staff brilliant.The chef clearly has a passion for his food and should be proud of all his dishes. Freshness with every course.After our shared starter of pork Terrine with hot crispy toast,we tucked into our mains,My husband having, as always, their delicious crispy fish and chips.I opted for the roast beef.Beef pink and beautifully cooked and carved,served on roast carrots,parsnips and potatoes.Plenty of roast potatoes and not a boiled one in sight..Parsnips cooked to be just tender.Yorkshire pudding was crispy and tasty.The kale and leeks were cooked perfectly and added a refreshing side to the dish.As for the cauliflower cheese!! Served seperately with cheese,yes cheese.So often you get a pile of stewed cauliflower smothered in white sauce.Not here!

Visited the black horse in rampton, such a high standard yet comfortable place to go! Food is out of the world, staff are exceptional, so friendly! Large selection of drinks, I’m a gin drinker so for me I was in my element! Had the best time and I’d be back again in a shot! A must visit place!

This really is a little gem. Fabulous freshly cooked meal. We opted for main course and desert. We had Pork Belly and Fish and Chips respectively....all cooked to perfection. For desert I had the cheesecake and my friend had creme brulé (I think) both again we're delicious.

The pub covered in Virginia creeper is attractive both inside and out. We booked a table for Sunday lunch and were given a table in the bar area as we were told the restaurant was fully booked. There didn't seem to be much difference from what we saw. Tables are well spaced out and one is not crowded by people drinking at the bar. Overall the food was average. Starters were fine if a bit bland. The pork and gravy tasty but overall the vegetables lacking in taste and texture, it's odd to have parsnips in small cubes. We had to ask for apple sauce though we were told it was on the plate; we certainly could not find any and would not expect it on the plate anyway. Overall though the service was quite friendly it was lacking. I did find it annoying that having ordered a gin and tonic with ice that it turned up with the tonic already poured in to it with the words that they had run out of ice. I wasn't given any choice as to whether I still wanted it or whether I minded. I did mind and had I been told I would have ordered a lager. As it was I accepted it as I felt that to have not done so would have caused a difficulty at the outset. It's understandable that things are forgotten but surely it's reasonable to have given me a choice whether I still wanted it?!

We visited today and can honestly say that everything about it was great. The restaurant was full, a good sign, and plenty of people in the bar too. We had the roast beef which was delicious served with a lovely choice of fresh veg. I had baked vanilla cheesecake for dessert and my husband had treacle and lemon tart both were gorgeous and beautifully presented. The service is very friendly and efficient and all the food here is fresh and homemade. It's probably best to ring ahead and book a table. You will not be disappointed!!

Table of four at 6pm yesterday. Warm welcome with good selection of beers and spirits behind the bar. The interior has been given a bit of a makeover since our last visit under different management, the new décor is calm and relaxing with some great picture of the village and pub in days gone by. The menu offers a reasonable choice including appetising good steak & fish options. Our party opted to go without starters and went with 3 ribeye steaks and battered Haddock. Food arrived within a roughly 20mins timescale. All dishes were cooked as requested and given a decided thumbs up for presentation, quality and taste. Dessert selection was good and partaken by all, to universal acclaim. Service throughout was friendly and attentive. We will certainly be returning.

Went to the Black Horse after a drive round the area . Popped in to see if we could get a table ,got one . The food was a of a very good standard I had rump steak with peppercorn sauce ,chips tomatoes and mushrooms , onions rings .You could tell that they were all homemade none of your frozen onion rings , the batter was crispy, light and lovely the chips were not greasy , light and crisp. My husband had fish and chips and minted peas which also was very nice.We both had desserts which also were very nice. The staff are very nice and helpful , we will be back

We are visitors staying in Over for a week and came upon this lovely pub by chance.

Mi madre es un ordinario, como ella vive en la aldea, pero esta fue nuestra primera visita ya que Abby y Harry tardó más - ¡guau!, nos quedamos muy impresionados.

Vine aquí con algunos amigos y me encantó, excelente restaurante con comida increíble, junto con un gran servicio y un ambiente acogedor y agradable. El Black Horse ofrece comida maravillosa para buenos precios. Recomiendo encarecidamente el besugo! ! Tienen una brillante selección de ron y ginebra junto con cervezas e incluso una gran selección de refrescos. Esta no era nuestra primera vez aquí y sin duda no será la última.

Cena para 4. El personal es muy acogedor y relajado ambiente. Presentación muy buen menú y la calidad de la comida es excepcional. Recomendaría el huevo scotch de arranque y la cadera. El menú cambia regularmente. Genial tener cervezas y una selección de vinos muy buena. Puede ver por qué llegar totalmente buenos comentarios.

Hard to know what to say to choose from the menu because it's seasonal. So my only advice is hurry up to get the current dishes! We had the mushrooms (could drink the sauce, it's so good) the potted shrimp were to die for. I tasted the steak (do it) and the bream was so good. We happened to be there for the samphire - lucky us! Kids enjoyed the chicken salad, sweet potato rosti and the eton mess was gone in seconds. But I'd say the lemon tart was worth the drive alone. Excited to go back!

Lovely welcoming staff, good range of beers and a menu of fantastically cooked food. Highly recommended.

We booked a table on a recommendation, and we were not disappointed. Great food, a good pint, and very good service, the staff were excellent. Will we go back, we most certainly will.

I always like to try out new restaurants & this one certainly didn't disappoint! Ate here for Sunday lunch & the food is really delicious. The duck leg was really juicy & the sides were great. Lemon tart is to die for with just the right amount of cream. The service is excellent. The atmosphere in this restaurant is very light & airy. I would definitely eat here again!
