Great little pub with really nicely kept beer

Really gone down hill as a place. Used to come here weekly for years as it has a great atmosphere. I was refused service after arriving because I was carrying my girlfriend’s uniclo bag (essentially her hand bag). There was no issue with my girlfriend wearing the bag on entry, but because I offered to carry it for her while dancing, I was refused service. There were 4 girls in our group with the same bag on. We would have been more than happy for someone to look in the bag if there was a concern with its contents. Seems common sense went out the window here. I think your policy needs reviewing regarding bags - if there is a bag you are concerned about it should be looked through at the door before entry (irrespective of who is carrying it) - that’s why you have a doorman. The man working behind the bar needs to be trained on what type of bags he is looking for as he claimed I was wearing a bum bag. Looking at the description on the uniclo website, it is described as a round mini shoulder bag. I understand we may not all be fashionistas like my girlfriend, but many of his other colleagues behind the bar did not seem concerned by this bag. It’s a shame for the pub as we had a group of 15 who all left after this - probably emptying half the dance floor. Instead the pub was left with a rugby team, some of whom were looking for a fight, pushing people around. Good luck with them as your regulars :)

Terrible music. In fact the only person that was enjoying the music was the DJ. We didn't even bother finishing our drinks it was that bad Edit: Got dragged in there again & must say tonight was a better atmosphere than before. Still terrible music played by the dj which meant one drink before moving on

Great pub !!! We visited this pub a couple of years ago on a weekend trip and we again visited today and the friendly barmaid was working again !!! Very good service, knows her shots mixes off by heart....and helped us choose a few to enjoy. Lovely pub , clean toilets and comfy seating. Will definitely visit again when we're in the area.

Hoping for a Hazy IPA or Craft Ale there were none on offer, but not wanting to walk out and disappoint the chap behind the bar, we ordered two halves of ordinary IPA for what we thought would be a quiet rest as it wasn't busy at all. Unfortunately, our hopes were dashed soon after we sat down by some individual having a go at the chap behind the bar. Don't know what his problem was but his language was obscene and offensive and the chap behind the bar just stood there letting him get on with it so we finished our drink and left a bit hastier than we would have otherwise. Won't be coming back here again!

Good local venue/pub. In an accessible location but can get very cramped

Always had a great time, security are ON IT here ive never felt uncomfortable. Musics always made for a good night. Staff behind the bar are lovely and quick and prices are pretty decent. Not eaten here though unfortunately so will need to look into that.

Only drank here. Staff were very attentive. Beer was good. City centre prices but they need to charge that to survive but regardless lovely beer and lovely place. I didn't have anything to eat but food smelt delish. If u fancy a good beer good with good music and attentive staff Griffin it is zx

Fabulous pub. Terrific beer garden. An undoubted highlight of the trip to Kent.

Just popped in for a swift couple before dinner...seemed to be a friendly vibe to the place, with a cool decor while retaining plenty of character. Pinball machine, which you never see enough of in pubs these days was good fun.Also a nice little courtyard out the back which is a little sun trap! Very good pint served by a happy bar tender. Would happily spend an afternoon or evening in here.

On the way back after a day wandering through Canterbury to our house we went for a quick pint. It was quite early so to be honest we can't tell much about how it will or would be later on. We enjoyed it.nice atmosphere. They serve a nice variety of lagers. Friendly staff,clean toilets. Would like to come back another time again.

Great little pub in Canterbury. Admittedly I only went there for a gig, but it had an excellent atmosphere, great staff and it seemed to have a good selection of drinks. The gig itself was fantastic, and I have a lot of respect for the Black Griffin for supporting local music. The style of bands might not be for everyone, so check if there's a gig on before going!

Wao I loved this place. The band gave me their tambourine to add some melody to their songs. This was in celebration of st Patrick day

Good pub, great jukebox and good service. Was great until DJ turned up on Sat night and played hip hop so loud it became difficult to have a chat, unless you went round the back where it was really cold as the back doors were open. Also, lighting really bright...

Very young pub but we did visit on a Friday night not what we were looking for but good music & board games which I've never seen before.

Very pleasant young lady behind the bar,nice beer and a nice fire in the main bar,quiet for the time of day but still nice.

We had some nice pints here in the afternoon and returned in the evening for some more and some excellent food! Highly recommend the halloumi (best I have had)! The service was quick and friendly. Would return.

Don't go in Saturday night so busy 3 deep at small bar go visit Sunday when it's quiet big area out back

Well my little egg buns, this place looks gorgeous from the outside, a tempting delight for the travellers eyes.Enter the door, still a gorgeous taste of the eye palette. A decent selection of drinks, could have more cider options. Quite slow service, but the patrons seem friendly

Lovely visit to this pub. Burgers looked so good, we came back and ordered the following day. I'm GF and the chef was really great at cooking me the perfect GF burger. We had an excellent time. Also, garden is small but really comfy seating with wall heaters. Really helpful staff. Definitely recommend.

It was a load of rubbish and 50.00 for 8 normal drinks. I wouldnt go there again !!!! Staff was very rude and they left us waiting 40 minutes for a drink.

Following a meal, we were looking for a beer in town and chanced upon the black Griffin, we followed the covid rules, staff were friendly and helpful. The service was good but I'm sure there must me more to the building itself.
