Went for lunch. Had a ploughman (but not that fabulous ) lunch and a Friars beer. Food was god. Service was indifferent and not caring. Just so I g their job nothing more. Music was loud and unpleasant.

Went here with a group of friends (men and women) a while ago and only the women got ID’d for drinks. We all look the same age and it was very obvious that the bar attendant just didn’t want to serve the women. So much so that when my friend gave her boyfriend a fiver to buy her a drink in front of the bar attendant he was happy to oblige. I understand this could easily have just been protocol in the pub but made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We are all between 23-25 so well over the legal age. Warning to women- bring your ID to this pub 😅

Came across this pub when we were walking into Canterbury, popped into this very traditional pub for a drink, when we saw the meals coming out we decided to have some lunch. Not a huge lunchtime menu but every dish sounded lovely. We ordered a Brie and grape baguette and a hot sausage roll both coming with chutney and salad. It was delicious, we will certainly visit again next time we are in Canterbury

Although the pub has claimed to be dog-friendly, they are NOT. Dogs are only allowed outside unless you are friends with the bar staff. I came with my small, quiet dog who sleeps in my lap and was told I to remove her despite the place being advertised as dog-friendly. Better to go to the Dolphin just around the corner which is extremely welcoming to dogs. If you're looking for the bar dive vibe, then Canterbury Tales just down the block is also a better choice--very dog friendly and the pub owner & staff are also great with customers.

Went in with 3 adults and my 2 kids, we were the only customers. A new bar person was on her first shift. I was served a pint of Neck Oil that (I thought) tasted dodgy, I know what Neck Oil tastes like, i've had hundreds of pints of the stuff. Another, older barperson poured himself some Neck Oil from the pump, supped some, looked at me and said "Tastes fine to me". I obviously wanted it replaced, as I didn't think it tasted fine, he wasn't going to replace it. I went to sit down as he talked loudly to the new female staff member about how to deal with "problematic" customers, it was humiliating. I then had to sit with my family, and no drink, for half an hour until they'd finished, i remind you there was no one else in the pub. I don't know what the guy thought he was achieving by treating me like I was trying to get one over on him, for some inexplicable reason. I'd had 1 swig from a pint poured by a new staff member, it was definitely pony, and by acting like a big man in front of said new, young, female staff member, and humiliating me, he guaranteed a bad review and that no one in my family will ever drink in his pub again.

My wife and I are local to Canterbury and over the last five years or so we have been to this pub for a drink, ostensibly because it’s in in a lovely spot in the sun(weather depending obviously!), within the King’s Mile, and close to the Cathedral. Aside of those positives and apart from the fact that the toilet facilities have improved immeasurably, the staff that work here seem uniquely bored and routinely disinterested in the clientele they purport to serve. Today we had to endure a charmless bearded bespectacled chap we assumed to be the day-manager who treated our custom as if it were an inconvenience. I can only assume that any staff training procedures do NOT include the words : ‘in the first instance, please at least smile at customers, this is a very simple minimum requirement’. In short, with even vaguely positive management this pub could be great destination but as it is will continue simply to pick up unknowing passing tourists - local people will spend their money at the many other FRIENDLY local pubs in the area. I’m sure this review will be treated with casual disinterest, as was our custom, but as a former businessman I’m convinced that this venue is an opportunity missed.

The staff are great and when the kitchen is open the food is wonderful, I enjoy coming here especially in the summer during the day being able to sit outside and relax with a nice cold cider. They have a wide range of drinks and always have a lovely bitter on too. Would recommend for anyone wanting a nice day or evening and to jump just off of the high street where it’s not too busy.

Simple stuff such as sausage rolls and pasties ordered plus drinks, nothing fancy expected but they just didn’t get their act together to bring the food out for an hour and a half despite being chased. It was really poor. This is clearly a boozer, nothing wrong with that, and the selection of beers was good but for food, forget it.

Lovely setting. Great dog friendly pub. Disappointingly not so friendly to humans. We reserved a table for Sunday lunch, upon arrival we were left standing at the bar with 2 staff doing their best to avoid eye contact… then Sophie walked in and knew exactly what being a good host meant, attentive with a smile, I hope her disposition is catching to the other staff. Food was OK, timing was a bit here and there, had almost finished when the cauliflower cheese arrived, was more like cauliflower poached in milk but nothing compares to Mums 🤷‍♂️ We’d give it a second go but can’t score more than a 3.
