The Black Dog in West Dorset

Very disappointed in the fish and chips it was tiny like a child’s portion and very expensive for what you get. Food was hot so was the plate. Service good. Told the waitress only to be told “I’ll tell the chef” Not sure we will be returning anytime soon.

Driven past several times but this time decided to stop. So glad, very warm friendly welcome, great menu choices. Food was delicious, hot and nicely presented. Asked for some salad dressing and the chef made some especially… thank you.

Not what we expected at all. And don't expect tomahawk steak. It maybe on the menu but you won't get to eat it! Apparently it is there sometimes!

First time visiting and we will definitely return. We attended at 12 noon for the first of 3 sittings for Mother’s Day, the pub was packed but this in no way affected the service. All our servers, were courteous and eager to make our visit a good one. There were 3 of us and we each chose a different dish from the menu and all of us had delicious meals. We had a vegan in our party and the option of a vegan roast ( in addition to the vegan option listed on the menu) was offered at the time of booking. Fabulous food with generous portion size for main course and the puddings were so scrummy !

We booked the Black Dog for a private family function. We cannot thank the team enough , every one of you from the chef, waitresses and bar staff team were amazing , so attentive , nothing was too much trouble.Everything was much appreciated . The standard of the buffet had great variety with generous portions. We definitely recommend the Black Dog and will be back.

Lovely lunch out with family and dog. Friendly service and good food. Only criticism is that a finger bowl should have been provided with the mussels as opposed to asking for it.

The pub has got its act together! Food has been pretty good for a while, but now the service is good too. The cask ale, which always used to be much too cold, was at a good temperature! Good experience, will be going again.

Visited with mum for lunch week before Christmas, after recommendation. Very warm greetings once at the bar, good banter with staff, very professional. Food was first class, excellent service and very warm atmosphere (For once,no damned dogs or kids!) Very commendable and would definitely recommend and visit again.

Excellent Sunday roast! Huge portions, meat was fab. Wonderful service and nice atmosphere, really impressed we’ll be back!

We stayed one night for bed and breakfast in a family, dog friendly room. Room was large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good and staff were exceptional! The only weakness was the extra Z bed was uncomfortable.

This is a relaxing pub with an excellent menu and very friendly service. The food was amazing, flavourful and served attractively. We were three adults and a 2 year old child and we chose roast lamb and a Yorkshire Pudding Burger of Turkey, pigs in blankets and stuffing with bacon tater tots, our visit was faultless.

Went here for my birthday meal out with my husband and the new menu was amazing. We have always enjoyed going to the Black Dog but this menu is definitely the best variety of dishes we’ve seen here. Really lovely cod and lamb main courses and a gorgeous chocolate fondant dessert. Staff very attentive and polite.

We met our Dorset friends here for a Saturday lunch. We had travelled down from Suffolk and were in need of a good meal! The black dog didn’t disappoint. My friend came with her dogs and they were allowed inside in the pub area. I am always wary of ordering baked potatoes as they can be a bit overdone when it gets to 2pm. However two of us had this, mine with cheese and ham my friend with tuna, both served with a side salad and coleslaw. The potatoes where huge and fluffy and fresh, great deal too at just over 8 pounds each. My husband had the teriyaki beef wrap, around the same price and tasted great. It was busy in there but the service, and the beer where excellent! Highly recommend!

Been here now several times and it never disappoints. Bring a friend here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and can honestly say it so nice. Food amazing. I’m really (according to my daughter 😂) critical about restaurants so cannot fault this if I tried. Great staff. Great Food. Well presented and clean all round. Definitely recommend 😋

Called in for a meal, the menu was varied, the service was great and the food was fantastic, what more can you ask for, we would use again of in the area.

We had high expectations as it was recommended and the reviews were so good but honestly not great. The car park was full to bursting and though we parked ok (one of last 2 spaces) others were unable to and it caused some arguments. Staff friendly but very slow service, we ordered drinks at bar but waited half an Hour to make our food order at the table and when food arrived, well my roast beef was sliced so very thinly I could probably have seen through it. The roast potatoes were hard and tasteless and the horseradish was so very watery, my wife’s salmon was over cooked so dry. I won’t be going back and if you go Just don’t expect too much then you’ll be happy with it.

Our Third time visiting this little Gem, the staff were on hand to give us a friendly welcome, making us feel good about our choice of place. The food did not disappoint & was consistently as good as our previous two visits. We highly recommend this place whatever the occasion, our last visit was a Birthday Lunch & we will certainly be going back for more happy Meals. Thank you, Nick & Staff for a great experience.

We are locals that hadn’t been for a while and we brought our friends over from Canada for dinner. None of us were disappointed. Food was excellent and a good varied menu made choosing a main meal difficult. Great service from the staff. Would recommend highly.

Very poor quality food and extremely expensive. Had a fish finger sandwich. The fish was grey and children’s size. The bread was doorstop chunks of white basic bread. Desserts top price for basic quality

We visited while staying in village on holiday. Food was impressive and service great too! Children were happy with the oaky area and the Morris dancers were the icing on the cake :)

We visited this pub twice whilst on holiday ,we had 2 beautiful meals , lovely interior, very clean and the staff were great too . Would definitely recommend it .
