The food, the service were all fantastic. In terms of local food, it doesn't get much better. Our experience from start to finish was fantastic. From the presentation of the plates both starter and main course couldn't have got any better. Me and my partner will be booking for food here for many occasions to come. Great meal once again , not the cheapest but great quality. Went for shredded duck starter which came with asparagus voloute which i hate so asked without, the chef offered a red wine sauce instead which was fantastic. Game goujons for main , hubby had pork belly both excellent. Wine wax £29, cheapest was about £20 .. again on the high side but we come here as a treat so didnt mind. Serving staff attentive and friendly. Full deserves its good reputation.

Have driven by hundreds of times and decided we should try the food as a lot of restaurants in the area have lowered their standards i think because of the deluge of tourists in recent times. All i can say is wow the food was delicious and service excellent. We started with a shared plate of game gourjons and my entre was venison liver plus and my wife had venison carpaccio. They don't skimp on the portions and excellent quality.

Visited on a Tuesday night, my wife had the Stone Bass which she enjoyed. I went for the fish and chips. The chips were rock hard and inedible. No one came to check on us so I had to go looking for a member of staff who just said “I’ll do you some more” . After a few minutes passed a more acceptable plate of chips arrived on to which I had to transfer my half eaten fish. By this time my wife had almost finished her meal. No discount offered when the bill came. Poor, would not return.

Lovely lunch, good value, friendly staff, Beef and chicken were perfect and Sunday lunch had all the trimmings 😊

Abysmal if you're vegetarian. You're either reduced to ordering a few starters or accepting the vegan burger. No other mains are veggie despite a kitchen stuffed with veg. Had sea bass and it was very tasty. Arancini good but prob only needs tomato sauce. Pesto sauce is too rich for an already rich dish. Friendly, warm and welcoming and comfy. Dogs are thankfully confined to the bar. My seven year old son says he wished the music was more relaxing than upbeat dance tunes 😄

This place looks lovely from the outside and upon entering are greeted enthusiastically by the lovely staff . Menu is rather limited and doesn’t serve pasta on a Sunday , it’s also not on the kids menu which was a bit unfortunate for the young person with us as they only really like pasta ! However Sunday lunch had the potential to be great but sadly the beef was just a portion of fatty gristle with hardly any beef to be seen , the veg was perfect and perfectly edible as was the huge Yorkshire pudding . Complaining didn’t get me anywhere either the waitress just said that she wouldn’t have eaten it either ! Hence there probably won’t be a return trip .

Our 'welcome' was not overly friendly but the property has been modernised with newly refurbished and tasteful rooms. Also very clean. Lots of accessible power points in room and generous tea & coffee supplies plus free bottles of water. Room would benefit from coat hooks behind door, and somewhere to put toiletries in bathroom. Also a proper chair would be more useful than a stool. Cooked breakfasts are ordered off a menu with decent choices made to order. Pastries and fruit to have with yoghurt would improve the offering. Very comfortable stay.

Absolutely excellent meal - in fact the best of our stay in the Lowick area! I particularly enjoyed the game goujons starter and both of us liked the belly pork main course. The cheese board comes in one size....huge ...with an excellent range of local cheeses. We needed to take the remains of the cheese home - enough for lunch for two!

This is probably the best pub meal I’ve ever had. We visited twice and ate different things and enjoyed everything. We had the pie which was delicious and the vegetables were so fresh and a great variety, roasted cauliflower and broccoli in particular. It might seem odd to rave about such things, but normally the vegetables are just mush or nonexistent and these were so good. Staff members were really friendly and obliging, everything clean and tidy, what a find this was. I highly recommend you try this place out.

Booked Sunday lunch for 3 people. Food mass produced, beef like shoe leather did not eat it. Mentioned to the waiter who said it must have been a bad batch! No recompense whatsoever. I Had also booked for the following evening at the same time but cancelled in view of the terrible food. Would never return.

Came upon this place at 15:30 on a Sunday afternoon. My son and I had a roast beef with all the trimmings, his was dairy free so no yorkshire pudding for him) and my wife had fish and chips. All the meals were delicious and no complaints about the variation and quantity of the vegetables. Highly recommended.

We used to come to this pub years ago when we lived locally and it has come on a long way since then. Beautifully refurbished, rooms are wonderful, beds are extremely comfy, rooms always extremely clean and have everything you need for a more than comfortable stay. The bar is always well stocked and has a good wine list. The food is good pub food and the breakfasts are exceptional. All the staff are extremely welcoming and service is always really good, nothing is ever too much trouble. Have been many a time before and we always look forward to our next visit.

We stayed overnight midweek. Dinner was delicious , a very cosy and comfortable night in a newly refurbished small room . Breakfast was hearty and made perfect by the friendly lovely team. Would recommend and hope to visit again soon.

Wanted a night away as a little treat for us, hubby is now celiac so I have to pay particular attention to menus nothing worse than only having one option. Our room was very clean and cosy all newly done by the looks of it, we didn't eat that night as we had just had a meal before arriving which was a xmas gift. Breakfast was wonderful we had the full English all gluten free so no stress for hubby. Only one little issue for us was the room was very warm no heater on in the bedroom window wide open but still very warm as I say issue for us but other might like it like that. Would still go back

Amazing selection of GF items on the menu. In particular the take away fish and chips which were excellent. Great portion, good value, quality produce, efficient and friendly staff. Not to be missed especially if you are GF and need a good rural takeaway. Will definitely be back.

We booked her for one night on our way home from Scotland. What a real gem. The Bar was buzzing so guess its very popular with the locals. Friendly bar staff and a plethora of drinks beers etc. Dinner was very good very gastro and didn't disappoint.The Accommodation was spacious perfect King-size bed Well appointed room Bathroom with Shower with the White Company goodies and a decent hairdryer.Breakfast was excellent.Would happily recommend to anyone!

We went here for Sunday lunch whilst staying in the area, and purposely picked this as they have other options than just a Sunday Roast. We had the Roast Beef, Burger and Sea Bass. The food itself was good. The beef was very tender and gravy very tasty. The main reason for not giving a higher score, is for us, it's not just about the food, it's about the whole experience.Firstly, I would like to say the staff were very friendly, but I can only agree with what someone else has written recently that the service felt amateurish. It was very slow, even though when we first arrived it was very quiet. The staff were very loudly standing and chatting at the bar, which although out of site , we could hear quite clearly. The building itself looks like it has recently been renovated, so we put it down to maybe they have not long been open. When we went to pay the bill, we asked how long they had been open, to be told 4 years, since the refurb. I think just some further training and maybe a front of house member of staff keeping an eye on everything would help.

Ate here whilst on holiday with my wife and two teenage daughters. Nice location and atmosphere in the pub. Food was very good, my eldest daughter would especially recommend the curry. I had the burger which was nice but having tasted the curry I think I missed out ! Would be nice if they did portions somewhere between child and the massive adult portions however that is a small point on an otherwise very good night out.

My travels in the North East also took me to the the Black Bull, where I had heard the game and the fish were typically provided by the owners from their ‘fishing ‘n hunting’ days.Neat and tidy restaurant, but sadly the staff, although pleasant would really benefit from some decent training, they meant well, but the service was quite amateurish.The soup was homemade and tasty, but rather than choose any fish or game related dishes … I opted for the chicken curry…big mistake..,tasted like tomato passata with chilli for heat!! No decent flavours….someone in the kitchen desperately needs to rethink having that on the menu or learn about Indian food. My friend had the vegetarian curry which was the same without the chicken. Sorry Black Bull, not up to scratch I am afraid.On the good side my partner had the salmon which was actually very good…if the owner was responsible for catching the salmon…it was very good and well cooked.I really wanted this restaurant to live up to what I was expecting, I really did. Maybe on my next restaurant trip I will revisit and try the game!!

Living locally we have used the Black Bull fairly often and had some lovely food. Since release from lockdown the shortage of chefs and staff has presented delays in receipt of food. However, meals outside in August and September, fish and a burger took in excess of 45 mins to arrive and were overcooked. Waiting staff did not seem to care and took little notice of outside tables. In September they were overrun with visitors in the car park. Polite feedback via email was sent but sadly no response given. It appears the pub management is not really interested in quality and reflection on their service. Time to use other good pubs in there area.

Can’t fault the food and the staff were professional and friendly but I’m dropping one star as it did seem a bit rushed. No sooner had we finished our starter than our plates whisked away and mains were brought to the table within a blink of the eye. I guess some will read this and not think that’s a problem but when you’ve looked forward to an evening and you’re already finished your main course within 40 mins it feels a bit of an anticlimax. Tried to drag out our coffees but it was just a bit too efficient and not quite the relaxed evening meal out we’d hoped for. Would certainly visit again though…

Second visit here, for a meal, the first was bad so gave it another try, what a mistake!Served incorrect main course, chicken rather than steak and ale pie. Was offered to correct but this would have meant my wife eating and then me. On trying the pie the pastry was so hard the knife would not cut it, I had to break it with my fingers. Manager arrived and agreed to half our bill. The plate of food itself looked totally uninspired, the small round pie, a large dollop of mash and a few spears of broccoli with a tiny jug of gravy on the side.My wife had a chicken curry. This consisted of large lumps of chicken with a mild curryish flavour poured over the chicken, awful and should never have been called a curry.For dessert I tried an Irish coffee, I am not sure what was poured onto the coffee but no way was it double cream.The waitress was informed that my wife was lactose intolerant and was told the meal was suitable, unfortunately she had a bad reaction after eating the naan bread and her lemon sorbet came with wafers stuck on the top, these contained lactose and were removed by the waitress when this was pointed out.We cannot understand how this restaurant gains any good reviews and should be avoided at all costs.

Visited with friends down for a holiday. Booked ahead and arrived on time to find everything all ready for us. As it was a nice day we asked if we sat outside to have our drinks and place our orders, and young man came to tell us when our food was nearly ready, giving us time to move inside and get settled. Two steaks, pork chop and venison sausages were all very generously sized portions and very tasty. Only slight complaint was the vegetables were very 'al dente' to the point of being closer to raw. Given the portion sizes, we were too full to attempt dessert, but it looked very appealing on the table opposite ours. Will definitely be back to try.

I had the sea bass with tagliatelle.The fish prepared to perfection! My wife had the curry with reita sauce and fresh good quality chicken! Very good efficient and personable service !
