Rochester Relish - The Last Café in England in Northumberland

Very nice staff, food and service. Our best place to rest before getting to newcastle airport 😊

This is a gem. There’s a delight on the menu for all appetites. We adjust our holiday plans and journeys to be able to come. In a world of Instagram and Tiktok etc, some might find the decor old, but I prefer nostalgic. And it’s the food that counts. As a crowning glory, there is a beautiful (but muddy) walk behind the cafe to a Roman fort. It really showcases how wonderful Northumberland is.

First time visiting on Sunday after seeing the cafe a number of times on our travels. Would highly recommend! Staff were friendly and the breakfast was delicious! Enjoyed a relaxing breakfast whilst watching the chickens in the garden. We will definitely be visiting again.

Excellent breakfast, Ham & Cheese sandwich and pots of tea. Room overlooks one of the busiest bird feeders I've seen in a long time. Only downside was lack of Granary bread/Granary toast. Only white! Sausage rolls, cheese scones, quiche and lemon muffins were also excellent.

Excellent cafe - well worth stopping. Home baked food was excellent particularly the cheese scones and sausage rolls. The breakfast also looked great. Coffee was excellent also. We will be back.

Lovely setting and very friendly staff, food was faultless, old fashioned type of transport cafe( and I mean that in a good way) Hopefully to be constructive,------- it would transform the place if they tidied up the outside areas, cut the grass around the picnic benches, new floor coverings, and main point , cover those sticky tables with vinyl table cloths, they are relatively inexpensive and would make such a difference. Honestly, we were there for half an hour and everyone was commenting on the sticky tables. Hope is not to insult but help.

Nice rest stop in Northumberland north of Otterburn, plenty of parking and inside and outside seating, wheelchair access may be a bit difficult. Only had a coffee and a very nice white chocolate muffin. Biker friendly too.

Nice choice, home cooked food served with a smile. Good coffee , scones and bacon sandwiches. Dig friendly, plenty of parking.

Great throw back cafe - stopped on impulse for lunch and we were not disappointed. Best latte I have had in a long time - in the right glass - strong and hot. We had a baked potato and a BLT too - very generous portions. Friendly cheerful service and retro surroundings. Stop here if you can.

Yes a very enjoyable and affordable place for lunch. Tasty food and old school cigarette vending (defunct) machine on the way to the toilets.

We have to stop here every time on our journey to or from Scotland - for breakfast, which means to us the first or last English Breakfast we get ;-) It’s very delicious, freshly made. So are the pasties and scones.

Excellent all around. Don't go there expecting simple cafe grub. They do proper homemade food with high quality components. Lovely sausage rolls and surprisingly good burgers.

The breakfast selection was amazing, everything tasted soooo good!! We couldn’t resist the cakes to take away for the rest of the journey and the latte was especially delicious. Highly recommend as a pit stop!

What a find, coming from our holiday in Scotland, back to Yorkshire - food was fabulous & great quality (& quantity). Homemade cakes & pastries. Oh & a very warm welcome. You will not be disappointed.

Second visit and just like before, lovely friendly staff serving amazing breakfasts! Large full English, not for the faint hearted, was delicious as were the bacon sandwiches for those of us with smaller appetites! Reasonably priced too! Lots of delicious looking cakes and sweet treats too if you calling later in day!

A Cozy Gem with Great Service! I recently visited the Rochester Relish Cafe and had a lovely experience! While the coffee was average, the service made up for it in spades. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure I felt welcome and comfortable. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a great spot to catch up with friends or get some work done. The decor was modern and stylish, with plenty of natural light pouring in through the large windows. While the coffee may not have been the best I've ever had, it was still a decent cuppa. However, the excellent service and warm atmosphere more than made up for it. I'll definitely be back to try their food menu and enjoy the friendly hospitality again! Recommended for: Those looking for a cozy spot with great service and a friendly atmosphere. Perfect for casual meetups or a relaxing break..

What a lovely place! Passed it for decades and never been in...until now. Very homely in countryside I love. Cheese scones: absolutely delicious as was the onion soup, with a swirl of fresh cream. Coffee tasty... EVERYTHING tasty! Staff so friendly. Highly recommend

Today we decided to take advantage of their fish & Chip Friday...I have to say these were fantastic, nice fresh cod, fresh cut chips, delicious mushy peas and home made tartar sauce....Nothing frozen from this establishment folks...This will be my regular Friday from now on !!!

Wow what a great place to stop before going into Scotland to all my fellow truckers I recommend this place to take a 45min break and get some quality food. It has a small spot to park an Arctic truck and you will not be disappointed by the hearty breakfast it's fit for a king 💪 😋

Popped in for lunch on the way to Edinburgh. At this time of week and year it was fairly quiet but hot & cold food choice was really good and very well priced for such a remote cafe. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Good to see the cafe biker friendly so I would imagine it to be very busy once the weather warms up.

Second visit recently, great all day breakfast which we had for lunch. Staff are lovely. We got chocolate brownies to take home, yummy 🤤. We’ll be back. No frills, just proper, home cooked to order food.

We popped in here for a cooked breakfast before returning home after a stay in a cottage up the road. The ladies were very friendly and breakfast arrived pretty quickly. Very tasty and we both found the regular breakfast was enough for us.

Stayed at Rochester travelodgelast week. Cannot speak highly enough of the cleanliness and pleasantness of facilities. Will be returning!

A perfect place to stop. We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the summer and today the cheese scones and coffee were tasty. The staff are very welcoming. No hesitation in recommending Rochester Relish.

Popped in for a coffee and a scone, which the staff pleasantly provided, even though they were trying to close - they said they had been too busy to take in their OPEN board. Cheese scone was very good. Easy parking. Very friendly staff.

A great little deli and cafe with home made cakes, good coffee and lovely friendly service. We stopped on our way South, tried a cheese scone, a delicious lamb and mint pastie and an almond biscuit-all delicious so we stopped on our way back up North too!

We stopped in on our way north and it was hey look cafe moment. Both starving. The girls in there were all smiles and really friendly. They do all day service of foods teas and cakes and we had breakfast. It was beautifully cooked. I had the large and wasn’t greasy at all. Made a usually heavy meal feel just right! We also had a coffee and a tea both were really nice

Cold uninviting cafe. It was very cold and the food was less than average allthough the cakes looked quite nice.. butwe stpped for late breakfast... over cpoked poached eggs and cardboard bacon. Friendly staff.

Food OK, very run down but staff great

A much need stop from Darlington to Edinburgh. I have used the cafe about 7 years ago maybe more - it was ok then now very good. On the outside a bit unloved but inside had been redecorated. I just had a coffee but took away a cream scone which was delicious. The other cakes looked good. Someone was eating breakfast and that looked nice as well. The only criticism is the toilet is upstairs and was very 70s could do with a makeover.

Update 2023! Passed by again, so dropped in. Still excellent, looking forward to the next time we are passing... Lovely cooked breakfast. Had to go back (twice!) to enjoy a small sample of the excellent choice of cakes. Pity we live 400 miles away! New owners are great.

Nice little deli. Great customer service. Dog friendly. Big menu for a cafe in the middle on nowhere- we had steak pasty and chips- very tasty. Good coffee. Not a cheap cafe, but as there was quality food cost was ok.

We received a very friendly welcome for ourselves and the dogs. Pesto, tomato and mozzarella toastie was delicious. Fast service. Would definitely visit again when in the area.

I came across this lovely cafe as I drove up the A686 from Newcastle to Scotland and it was a perfect place to stop. The coffee was great, I had a lovely steak and ale pasty and they sell other local produce, including shortbread, jams, relishes and more. The staff were lovely and the service was great. Plus it has the added benefit of being the last cafe in England!! If you’re travelling on the A686, make sure you stop at Rochester Relish for a coffee or a meal - it’s highly recommended.

Delighted at the vegan breakfast. Dairy-free spread provided for the toast. Tasty food, friendly staff and reasonable prices. Coffee wasn't bad either.

Got a full English and a latte, the breakfast was excellent all great quality ingredients I couldn’t pick fault with any of it, thanks again I will definitely be back.

The Rochester Relish has just passed its first year anniversary under new management… and it’s brilliant! The food & service are first class. Cooked, baked and baps were quickly scoffed by me and my colleagues on 5 visits over 2 days (not a crumb was left). Also a great selection of hot / cold drinks. The First / Last Cafe in England (depending if you are heading from or towards Scotland) is well worth a stop and is important in supporting local independent businesses… you will be very much welcomed by the mega friendly and efficient staff team! See you next year!

Another tasty breakfast and canny banter with owners. Nice to vist a place that welcomes motorcyclists.

The burger is next level and without a stupid price tag. Excellent food all round. Fish and Chips on a Friday is worth the visit alone. Really friendly staff. We'll be visiting regularly.

This is one of the best little cafes I have been to. Food excellent, service perfect and ambiance 1st class. Do not use if you only have 30 mins to stop as you will miss the whole experience.

Fabulously friendly welcome when we arrived. We were more than pleasantly surprised at how vegan friendly the cafe was with the team being able to advise on a number of vegan options. We all enjoyed what we ordered including vegan hot chocolate, the “best jacket potato ever” (according to my daughter) and some of the best vegan sausage barms that my husband and I have had.

Beautiful fresh cooked breakfast. Friendly staff, tasty filling breakfast and also dog friendly. We also took some home cooked baked items away for the car journey home. Would definitely call back again if we were that way. Unfortunately we were on our way back from Scotland and we don’t live anywhere near 😭

This is a regular stop when we drive between Scotland and England. Staff are always ready with excellent food and friendly smiles. On our most recent visit, my wife and I had toasties, and we both agreed they were the best we’ve had in the 14 years we’ve lived in the UK. We highly recommend Rochester Relish, the “Last café in England“!

Popped in for lunch while visiting Redefest which was excellent. Amazing fish and chips and a superb large toasted sandwich. Efficient and friendly staff on what was a busy day. Cake was excellent too would heartily recommend. Garden outlook from the conservatory watching the chickens was a pleasant way to dodge the showers between bands at the festival. Will definitely return to eat here again.

Had a lovely stop here, very cheery welcome and friendly service. The latte was great, freshly cooked poached eggs excellent and we must come back for the all day breakfast. Gluten free bread available for toast etc.

En route home from Edinburgh, we opted to travel via the A68. We drove for what seemed like miles without sight of a cafe, restaurant or pub. Then as luck would have it, Rochester Relish came into sight! Boy, what a lovely little place this is. Run by a husband and wife team who clearly take great pride in producing top quality food at very reasonable prices. Home made soup was delicious, but the classic cheese burger with chips (proper home made chips) was outstanding. I can’t remember the last time I got proper, real, home made chips in a cafe in the UK. Do yourself a favour if you’re travelling up or down the A68, stop at the Rochester Relish Cafe.

We have dropped into this cafe a few times recently . We previously had been here back in 2015 and it was ok ,more like a transport cafe so just drove by it one our trips up and down the A68. We decided to give it another go late last year and glad we did as it had been taken over by a couple . It's is now a very nice place to stop and eat or even just have a quick drink and snack . We have now been 4 times in less than a year and would highly recommend having now sampled different food and cakes . The breakfast and soup are excellent . Hoping to try the fish and chips next time we pass

Came across this cafe with the sign outside saying “Last cafe before the border “. Met by owner with big smile, asked if they do milk alternatives and met with an array of choices, asked about the 5 stones in the field behind and again she told us all the local history, suggested walks and sites whilst watching the chickens roaming around the garden. Horrible workers in this place. I stopped off here during a long drive to get something to eat and use the conveniences and upon entering and asking where the restroom was, I was abruptly told that I had to buy something before I could use them. My plan was to eat here anyway but given the attitude of the person serving, I decided to wait until I got to a more hospitable establishment.

We stumbled upon this cafe for lunch having driven 6 hours on our way to holiday in Scotland. What a find! The lady who served us was very welcoming and friendly plus accommodating towards our two children. Food was all freshly cooked but service was also prompt. Burgers were huge and the pea and mint soup was delicious. All this plus absolutely beautiful views over Northumbria. Would highly recommend!

Stopped off for breakfast. Food was fantastic best sausage sandwich I've ever had ! Cakes were delicious too. First good coffee I've had in days which was much appreciated too. Staff were lovely and it was nice and quiet which was great for our dog as he's very nervous. Definitely will be back. It was nice to sit and watch the birds too.

Called in earlier today just after 9am to find it was closed. It was the same last Tuesday about 10am. Opening times online, google & Facebook state 9-2 on a Tuesday & also a sign in the window.

We waren een weekje in Schotland en hebben hier zowel op de heenweg (van Newcastle naar Edinburgh) als op de terugweg geluncht. Als je hier binnenkomt wordt je vriendelijk begroet. Ze hebben hier een ruime keuze aan eten en drinken. Je kunt zowel buiten als binnen (in de serre) lekker zitten. Er zit ook nog een winkeltje bij, hier kun je streekproducten kopen. Achter dit hotel zit nog een Visitors Center, erg mooi gebouwd, voornamelijk van hout. Om er te komen loop je tussen de schaapjes en kippen door. Ik had een hamburger (Breakfast burger) en heb in de tijd dat we in Schotland waren niet nog eens zo'n lekkere hamburger gehad, daarbij was die ook nog eens redelijk voordelig geprijsd (5,5 pond). Het is een behoorlijke hap. Als dit weer op de weg zou liggen, zouden we er zeker weer stoppen om te lunchen. Ze zijn alleen overdag open.

Called in on the way back from Jedburgh, had a latte with an amazing home made cream scone. We sat outside in the sunshine and the hens just walked about around us, a lovely spot and some brilliant home made cakes!

2 large full English, 2 drinks and 2 tray bakes for under £30. Food was freshly cooked, fried, not grilled, so a touch greasier than I would normally have but still delish Eggs were perfect! Sausages were very tasty. And you get to watch the...

Just the best cafe I ve been to for ages. Lovely scenic setting, nice decor, outdoor seating, friendly staff, the most tempting choice of cakes, great value, great entertainment from the cake loving hens who worked the tables! We had granola and Victoria sponge, so...

Stopped on very long journey south. Probably the best breakfast I have had in years. The chickens were fun too!
