Visited with friends. Food was excellent with generous portions and freshly cooked vegetables. Not too expensive in that our evening worked out under £30 a head including drinks. Gluten and dairy free was available although the choice was limited to fish. Staff friendly and we were refreshingly not pestered to buy more drinks. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Had a lovely evening with friends in their cosy restaurant. Food all home made and huge portions, even the men struggled. Being Gluten Free I was informed which dishes were suitable, mainly grilled meat or fish which was cooked beautifully, and had no trouble finding something for all 3 courses. Staff so friendly and attentive couldn’t do enough for us. Will definitely be returning.

Stumbled across this pub in July when returning from a trip to Clacton. Staff very helpful and managed to fit us in ( table for 6 ) in a very packed pub. Food was amazing, all had roast dinner, beef, lamb and chicken, everyone thoroughly enjoyed meal. Staff happy to adapt sides on our request and bring extra veg, potatoes and stuffing !!! ( sea air had made us especially hungry ) Restaurant was a lovely cosy room adjacent to bar, very welcoming and friendly. Really enjoyed our experience here, we have returned several times since and the food and service never lets us down !!!

four of us gathered to celebrate my birthday here, as it is local and we have been many times before, the Saturday lunchtime visit was new for us, and didn't realise how busy it would get, every table was taken, we had prebooked so had a good spot. just near us were a group of about 10, who were in good voice, and we had to keep stopping our conversation. re the food the whitebait was superb, the battered cod was good as always, but one of our party had to return theirs, as it had an ammonia taste, apologies all round, and a lamb pie replaced it, which was very good, we were too full for desserts. a nice homely place to eat.

We popped in here on the spur of the moment and are so glad we did. It was nice to see that the waitress was paying more attention to ensuring the customers received their food promptly and therefore hot than serving drinks etc. We shared the prawn platter starter which was tasty. All the different types of prawns had their own unique flavour but they blended together wonderfully. Our mains, calves liver and grilled plaice, were cooked to perfection and were served with plenty of side vegetables. This is one place where the food looks scrumptious and tastes as good as it looks. My reason for dropping a star was simply that we had to wait nearly 30 minutes for our starter, although the mains were delivered quickly. However the quality and quantity of good was with the wait. The waitress was on her own today but she did provide a great level of service and was extremely friendly. We will definitely revisit and would recommend here too.

We were cruising around one Sunday lunchtime and trying to find somewhere to eat without a reservation. The first two places we tried were full up, and so was The Black Bull. But the landlord quickly organised a table in the bar and we enjoyed a decent lunch served in good time. Notable was the selection of vegetables which were all perfectly cooked. A friendly, helpful place.

we hadn't visited for a while, and felt peckish. we had not booked and were lucky to get a table. as ever we had to wait a while, as the place was eventually packed. my wife fancied a simple meal ham egg and chips, and I one of the best steak and ale pies ever, in suet pastry. we were so replete, we then went home.

Came here on the off chance of getting a cheeky Sunday roast after being seriously let down by The Hawk in Battlesbridge (see my review if interested) and wasn't disappointed. Colleagues behind the bar were very efficient, polite and attentive. Ordered the roast beef for myself and the pork for my wife and Son. Were told we could sit down outside and they would bring the food, condiments, drinks etc out to us. There were no restrictions on where we could sit outside (The Hawk, please take note). Food was wonderful. Generous servings, really lean tender meat and plenty of veg. Did I mention how good the colleagues were? Very reasonably priced and excellent value for money. Will definitely return. Thank you ladies.

Had lunch and it was lovely, we was uming over what to have as so many dishes sounded lovely, Carol made quite a few recommendations and I must say she was spot on. We just about squeezed in a dessert which didn't disappoint. The staff are very friendly and welcoming.

My husband and I went to the Black Bull with two friends for their Burns Night The food was excellent especially the Potato and Smoked Haddock Soup followed by Haggis, Neeps and Tatties For the main course 3 of us had the Chicken “Bonnie prince Charlie” with roasted apple, almonds Drambuie and cream and the other the Fillet of salmon with Shetland mussels. We all had a different dessert and everything was delicious. They laid on a Piper which was a nice touch. We've eaten here for Sunday Lunch and also on a Wednesday for their Pie and Pint meal and never been disappointed. Come hungry they don't stint the portions excellent service and reasonably priced.

Situated on the A12 a few miles from the M25 this popular pub is close to Chelmsford and offers good food great service and great value - for a special "country" feel pub or a special occasion this place has it all- We pulled in and whilst the menu is not huge it covers every requirement - The many specials on the chalk board to the main menu offering chicken, steak, fish - cooked various ways- all generous servings- Whilst we enjoyed a few ales while perusing the menu I was amazed at the number of regular diners from the area who frequent the place - always a good sign- punters coming back. We ordered soup of the day - pea and Ham - piping hot and so thick and tasty it reminded me of my childhood. For mains my wife had the rib eye steak - juicy ,tender and cooked perfectly and served with generous portions of garden peas and chunky fries. I had the cod in batter - and by the time we finished we were so full we rolled out the door! Service was efficient , super friendly and fast - prices were about normal- but the experience was priceless. I may suggest booking if it is a weekend as I imagine this place gets patrons from a wide area and you would not want to be disappointed. Julie - the owner - and Mary Anne - the chef will certainly look after you.

No, food. Landlady opens when she feels like it, a little bit slightly rude. But drink provided, however no cider. Only ale, which I’m intolerant to so lemonade and lime then.

The best chai lattés in Chelmsford! I have enjoyed many great breakfasts here, my only criticism is that when coming in for just coffees and cakes I have had a discretionary service charge to the bil

Went here for Sunday lunch, total waste of money and won’t return. Beef was like rubber, potatoes vegetables and Yorkshire pudding cold, parsnips like mush and cottages cheese which was not only cold
