Very poor quality food on the curry night , food was dry and in no way resembled the curries ordered ,naan was like cardboard , did get 50% off but that did not make up for the disappointment. At least they got the wine right this time because the merlot we had a couple of days before was listed as 13.5% but on the bottle was 10.5% ….didnt realize on the day but noticed it today.

Very disappointing out of the 7 meals ordered 3 where returned to the kitchen ,fish meal was overcooked that much it sounded like a drum when tapped, chips were cold on 2 meals the pie meal on the menu said it was served with chips, peas & carrots there was no peas but served with runner beans that were not liked & the carrots were in the so called pie which was really a stew with a puff pastry top never been a pie Must admit that the front of house staff were excellent & very apologetic & shift manager Billy was very good & handled the problems well gave a free bottle of wine byway of an apology

We booked lunch on Christmas Day and it was excellent. The restaurant was full and there was a nice feel to it. There was a welcome drink on arrival and you were shown to your table quickly. Each table was decorated and there were crackers and table displays with your name on it. It was one sitting and you seemed to be served in order of arrival which was a good idea as you had a break in between courses. The sweet potato soup and the fish starters were both really good. 2 of us had the Turkey dinner and you could not fault it. There was lots of Turkey, the roast potatoes were soft and there were plenty of vegetables. The others had the rib of beef which they said was excellent, the meat so soft and tasty and again the potatoes and vegetables were really nice. All desserts we ordered were really great too, we chose sherry trifle, Christmas pudding and apple tart. The staff were really attentive without being over bearing and they all worked really hard. All drinks ordered were delivered quickly. If you are staying here over Christmas we would highly recommend you book the Christmas Day lunch you would not be disappointed.

Was staying in a lodge for 4 nights so ate in the bistro twice, Sunday lunch and one evening. Excellent food and service and nice range of beers. Reasonably priced for its location and no trouble in recommending it, You need to book and can easily imagine in the summer and holiday months this would be extremely busy given we couldn’t find anywhere else close by to eat.

Ate here on two nights during our week long stay, service was very good and the restaurant was very comfortable. First visit was for two of us and we had very enjoyable food in the restaurant that was not too expensive, plentiful and very tasty too. Second visit for 6 of us and we ate outdoors on the terrace and was just as good, just a shame the outdoor pizza oven was not in use on the night but pizza was being cooked in the kitchen instead. All of our meals were tasty and in my opinion good value. We’ve stayed at Hawkchurch so many times over the years but this is very much the first time eating at the Bistro and it won’t be our last. Seen negative reviews before but we took the opportunity to eat here and we wasn’t disappointed. A shout out to the hard working staff too.

When we were staying at Hawkchurch Resort we were given information about eating at the Bistro, so decided to have a Sunday evening meal there. When we arrived at 6.15, we were shown to our table and given Sunday lunch menu's, although the information sheet said that lunch was served 12-5 and a full menu from 5-7. A big let down but worse was to come. We were told that there were NO starters left and NO fish option. Both roasts came with far too much gravy and the gammon, which was nice, had a huge dried up piece of what we assumed was stuffing (with gammon?) and an undercooked pigs in blanket. Service was ok, we did speak to the waitress about the stuffing and she said that she would mention it to the chef. When we left, we walked past the chef who completely blanked us, so obviously nothing was said to him. Would we eat there again if we stayed at Hawkchurch again, more than likely not The bar area is lovely with a good choice of drinks and comfortable seats/settees.

Menu boring and basic. I had dish and chips the fish batter was cooked for too long and was hard no taste to the fish, my Husband had gammon which was rather thin with a few chips not much for a man. So disappointing with the right chef and imagination it could be amazing the venue is lovely.

We booked a family meal for Christmas day. Told be there by midday prompt as only one sitting. Lost my booking, so I wasnt happy, proceeded to tell me not to get stressed (when I pointed out i had just had cancer surgery!!!) We didnt get 1st course till gone 1pm, bought wrong ones, had to wait for 2 right ones, and chase for them.. We didn't get served main course till GONE 2pm. We sat in bar area with 3 other tables who all got served 1st then rest of dining room leaving us LAST. We questioned this and was told the chef plated up easiet 1st? We had 3 turkeys & 1 vegetarian. Hardly rocket science. My meat was cold but I ate it, most of the restaurant had finished by the time we had started, they tried to clear our plates before we had even finished. Even though we explained we got served last. By 2.30pm my 2 year old (having sat so long in highchair) had to be taken home by my husband. Our dessert finally came at 3.10pm,(so my husband missed this) which we bolted down as had family arriving at our home.. other people left with us on mass , some with dessert in takeaways. We had no apologises for the long wait and left very disappointed. Considering I just had life saving surgery and due a long adjacent treatment, we were determined to have a good Christmas. Thankfully a nice wattress got me a cushion to support my back, but 3 hours sitting upright wasnt ideal!! I wrote an email to complain, manager Carla replied who said she would come back to me in 7 days . Never did, even though after a week I sent a follow up email. In a time where hospitality needs people, a bit of good manners would have gone along way. But i guess as they already have our money they are not bothered. Either don't do such a big event, or have several sittings....

I am reviewing Christmas lunch, non resident. We were a table of 8 aged 17 to 82. The welcome was lovely and the room nicely decorated. Bread rolls were on the table but no butter provided unless asked for. The mushroom starter was lovely but the soup a little thick. The champagne sorbet tasted lovely and was enjoyed by us all. The meat and potatoes for the main meal came out much earlier than the veg which meant the meat and potatoes got cold and not so enjoyable. The table behind us did not get any veg at all. Dessert was very nice when it arrived after a 55 min wait with no updates on delay from the waitresses who were chatting in a corner. Service was very poor, the waitresses looked disinterested and not engaged in what they were doing. Service appeared chaotic. I know no one wants to work on Christmas Day but unfortunately that is part of working in hospitality as it is for other occupations over the Christmas period. A suggestion for next year could be that there are designated waitresses for each table who ensure that food is delivered in a more timely way and the main course all together. Perhaps 2 waitresses could pair up and do ? 4 tables between them. Introduce themselves to the diners and make it a more interactive experience. I think then tips would roll in for them and make working Christmas Day more lucrative and enjoyable. Just a thought.

The fries with Parmesan and truffle were just amazing, the turkey sandwhich and gravy were really lovley. Curry night was nice plenty on the plate. Staff were all very nice and friendly. Addicted to their fries now and it’s just a shame they didn’t do breakfast as I would imagine it would be lovley. The views from the sofa were lovley as they looked out on to the massive patio and rolling hills beyond

Whilst stopping at Hawkchurch for a few days last week we booked afternoon tea for 5 people. We were welcomed and shown to our table by a friendly waitress.Upon sitting down were offered tea and we also ordered a bottle of their Hawkchurch Prosecco which was really nice. When booking I requested more sandwiches on white bread and I asked to change one filling which the Chef did. It was so refreshing to make a request and for this to be taken on board. Thank you so much as it made the experience even betterThe stands were full of sandwiches with 3 different fillings, scones (both plain and fruit) and 4 additional cakes per person. The bread was so fresh and it has clearly only just been made as it was room temperature rather than been stored in the fridge. This has to be the best afternoon tea we have ever had and as such we can not recommend it highly enough.

We had to wait nearly and hour for our starters, we had pre booked a table and there were only 4 other people in the restaurant beside us so not exactly busy, the starters were ok, the marie rose sauce was simply tomato ketchup and mayonnaise and on the acid side, then our mains arrived and there was not a lot for 11.50 literally 3 small slices of pork, a quarter of a carrot3 small potatoes, masses of very picked cabbage which over powered everything and a small amount of kale that was sadly soggy and tasteless, it was supposed to be served with apple sauce but we had to request this and then it arrived from a jar, not what you expect from fine dining, not impressed at all and wont be doing it again!

I booked a table for two for a much advertised festive meal, thought this would be nice for a pre Christmas evening, I had booked several weeks in advance and was asked to pay several days before the evening along with our choice of menu. We arrived 15 minuets early and were taken to our table on time, as we the third table to be occupied so we thought service would be reasonably quick having pre ordered but had to wait 3/4 of an hour before our starters arrived both ordered as a could dish and a further 35 minuets before the main meal arrived this main meal was very poor quality I found this very disappointing. it seemed one young waitress was not just running the bar on her own but also serving 75% of the meals, I believe the retardant is over rated under staffed and needs a better Chef in the kitchen . I could NOT recommend this restaurant..

My family and I dined here on a Friday evening whilst staying at the resort. What a disappointment! We asked for a table for 8pm, but were told they were fully booked so could only accommodate us at 8.15pm - arrived at 8pm anyway for a pre-drink and the place was empty, and our table was ready! We ordered a variety of different meals (although there were a lot of meals sold out so it was slim pickings!). The mixed grill was sent out with lamb kofta rather than sausage, and other meals included minor changes to what was advertised on the menu. One meal was sent back as the chips were totally inedible (couldn't even cut in half with a knife they were that crispy). This meal was sent back and came out again 15mins later (when everyone else had finished eating) with totally different chips (which were obviously thrown on out of a bag of frozen chips) which were then undercooked and hard inside!! Service slow and not great overall with a long wait for drinks and no 'checking in' to see how our meals were. Even when the plates were collected there was not the expected 'how were the meals' and we had to volunteer information about the poor chips (2nd time round) and had to ourselves request that this meal be taken off the bill. Totally disappointing meal given what a lovely site this restaurant is on. If we ever return to the lodges - would not eat here even if it was 100% free of charge!

Booked in advance for our first night on recommendation by booking staff. But when sat in the bar early, we were confused why staff were advising customers that they were fully booked when there were so many tables available. Apparently it was steak night, so two rump steaks for around £22 (however the steaks turned out to be smaller than their menu rump steaks charging £17+ for a 8 oz rump). In short, 5 meals, 2 being "steak night specials"... 4 consumed of which 1 enjoyed and the 5th pretty much left. My steak was chewed and then left on the plate, and most chips left due to being hollow and over cooked, awful. Food was consumed as we were hungry and had been on M5 for a very long time. My plate was as full as when served, although I'd attempted to chew. Quite clearly an example of a bad meal. Upon being asked if all was ok with our meals I made a bold statement that hurt me.... 'that was the worst steak and chips that I have ever experienced' My father in law who had the second special was too polite to complain, but stated he was shocked that a place that looked so nice delivered such poor quality. I was offered a drink for my meal. Feeling insulted, I declined, paid the bill and none of our party of 5 used the bar or restaurant for the remainder of our stay. The condition of the toilets was not great. Our experience was really disappointing.

So disappointed with the standard of the food for our family birthday meal. The risotto was completely lacking in flavour, the roasts were good but cold, steak was the only meal that was good and warm, hoped the desserts would redeem it but the sticky toffee pudding was dense and tough, the 'deconstructed' cheesecake on special was just a trail of biscuit crumbs, 3 blobs of cream and 2 strawberries. We were offered 10% off so some recompense. We had booked because previous good meals had been enjoyed. Have since found out that after I booked it was remodelled as a bistro. Have to assume the chef also departed. Not to be recommended until a proper chef is employed

We visited Beeches in May and June this year when it was a restaurant and the food was very good but it is now a bistro. We were unaware of this and the title should reflect this change. The food was lukewarm and the plates were cold which is really unforgivable. When paying I was told that the previous chef had left and there was now a 'roving chef' whatever that means.

visited this restaurant while staying on site at the Hawkchurch resort. first impressions werent great, first night in there, overhearing staff complaining that a big group had walked in, as if this was a massive inconvenience to them. didnt make us feel very comfortable. tried on a few nights in the first week of the holiday to get a table but only to be told theyd stopped serving early because they were too busy, dispite half the tables being empty. when we did get a table on other nights, we overheard other people being turned away. while we were on site we looked at other reviews of the restaurant and noticed that alot of people were saying the same things. the staff didnt seem very apologetic and friendly or accommodating wouldnt be words i would use to discribe most of them. however i would like to say this wasn’t included the young girl which im guesing was the chef, and a young man behind the bar who was nice. with the resort being in such a remote location, having a restaurant that closed early meant we had to drive to get a sandwich from the nearest tesco for dinner. not exactly a luxury break treat type of food. the pizza oven service they advertised, seemed to serve for a very short period of time on the odd day, of the two weeks we were on site we hardly saw it working, another thing we read alot of reviews on online. the website also advertises the restaurant has a Costa, what it maybe only says hidden in tiny small print somewhere, is that its not an actual Costa, but a tiny barista machine that serves about as much as the vending machines in petrol stations. as a stand alone restaurant open to the public, avoid. as an on site restaurant for the Hakwchurch resort, do what we did, drive to the nearest Domino’s if you want to actually get served and by someone who has customer service skills.

Visited as a family of five for our evening meal. First impressions were ok, the restaurant looked clean, nice decor but only two staff. We were shown menus before being seated and on initial viewing they looked promising. Orders were taken for a few starters and five mains. Starters were garlic bread with cheese and whitebait. When served both were very average, whitebait had a lime mayo ( rather than a tartare or aioli) which didn’t work. The garlic bread had rubbery bland cheese and hardly no garlic, how can you get this so wrong? Mains were cheese n bacon burger, cajun chicken burgers and two steaks. The burger was very average with no sauce and on the dry side, same with the cajun burgers which were dry too. Biggest disappointments were the steaks, both came with one small mushroom, half a small tomato and a small portion of chunky chips. The steaks were dry and un seasoned, my wife’s was cold ( they took it back, flashed on the grill and brought it back, still cold! ) We were told they are the steak night specials but were very below par. We are staying at Hawkschurch resort for a week but won’t be going back to The Beeches, a below average restaurant.

Firstly fine dining this is not intimate dining for couples this is not especially when seated next to the lounge area where you have the pleasure of seeing those fresh from leaving the gym or hydrotherapy pool wandering through the bar not the view I want whilst enjoying dinner. Dinner itself was shocking the food was edible menu choice different to website and information pack. Starters very poor choice had to ask what soup of the day was as there was nowhere with that information. When we were seated our menus were placed on the table not given to us and had to ask for the wine menu as there wasn’t one of the table (got given that but no cocktail menu offered). Specials board not visible from the restaurant were told stroganoff was on special however had to ask what kind. Ordered in the end soup for starter which yes was nicely presented and tasted ok a bit lacking in seasoning however it was nuclear hot could not even touch my spoon to eat it a had to wait a good ten minutes. Hubby ordered stroganoff which was bland creamy but tasteless I did try some and flavour was just missing. I ordered a Cajun chicken burger and fries with slaw someone seemed to forget the Cajun seasoning as only seasoning I could find was a little bit of thyme so it was basically a chicken breast gherkins tomato and lettuce on a bap nothing Cajun about it fries came from a freezer and were horrible i didn’t even eat them some things ketchup can’t fix. For the price of the food i have eaten far nicer at chain restaurants. Icing on the cake was when I ordered a liquor coffee (we skipped dessert too disappointed in the rest of the meal) my coffee took forever to arrive and they needed clarity that I wanted baileys in my coffee despite asking for a baileys coffee not sure what was confusing about that it came in what can only be described as an ice cream glass no handle so had to wait until it was luke warm before I could even pick up my coffee as the glass was simply too hot no after dinner mints served with coffee or with the bill. I have been fortunate to eat in some amazing restaurants and this one is definitely not fine dining it’s more like a quick service cafe with food quality to match very disappointed only reason we ate here as it was on site as we had to remain close whilst our eldest babysat her siblings and we were looking forward to a dinner just the two of us. Wine was good only thing that came as per description though not sure why ice was placed in the bottom of what should have been a chilled wine bucket only served the purpose for the bottle not to fit in the cooler properly thus having the oppositw effect of keeping wine cool when half the bottle is stuck out of the top of the cooler. All in all not impressed will try the pub the pub down the road tonight.

Every request seemed like too much trouble and this was before there was a discrepancy with the bill! Unfortunately it seems now the holiday season is upon us they aren’t interested in their loyal local customers. We’ve visited for Sunday lunches pizza evenings Christmas fares and family occasions over the last couple of years. However, the “piece de resistance” was the Braised Short Rib of Beef, absolutely gorgeous, perfectly cooked. On Sunday we spoke to the Head Chef, Bruce Cole, and told him how good the food was, and that he should be very proud of the quality of food. All of the staff were very pleasant and helpful. This is a restaurant to eat at if you are in the local area.

We took advantage of steak night whilst staying at Hawkchurch. Two rump steaks with salad, chips and a choice of sauces for £22. Both steaks were cooked as requested. Also ordered a plum tart for dessert which was very good.

We have stayed on site at Hawkchurch three times in the past two months. The staff are simply AMAZING. They are managed by a lovely lady who welcomes you with open arms and makes you feel like your at home. We heard all about her dog Bentley and have become friends over our recent stays. The other members of the team are also lovely, Jan, Gemma, Jack and his brother. We have eaten a handful of times here and always been very nice.

We were staying on site so decided to give the restaurant a go. Food and service was very good. I believe they also offer a pizza collection service which is extremely handy!

We re-visited this restaurant on our annual "girls" weekend away. Whilst not disappointed with the quality of the food we did find some of the staff lacking in customer relations - as found on previous visits - and a lack of atmosphere, as before!

We had visited previously for a look round. This is a lovely restaurant, very nice decor in a pleasant location. The menu was good and tempting and the service came with a smile. Food was good and hot and reasonably priced. Would recommend and will be returning.

This restaurant is very smart and the decor and furnishings have been well thought about there are comfy sofas to enjoy a coffee etc, menu was limited, but food was tasty and reasonably priced. We ate on Saturday night and I think we had the whole place to ourselves!!

We thought this was a real find – a lovely restaurant hidden away in the beautiful East Devon countryside, near Hawkchurch, open to non lodge residents. It was certainly a great venue with pleasant staff – hardly anyone dining there for lunch. It promised much but sadly failed to deliver on the food front. Lunch was a big disappointment. Chips looked the part but were just hard, overcooked crispy shells and the cod with it, while acceptably moist, was also encased in overcooked batter. My partner’s steak sandwich also failed to impress. Desserts – Lemon posset and vanilla ice cream - were excellent, however. Perhaps the chef had a bad day so we will give it a second go.

visited while staying in the attached holiday park and were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the restaurant. They also have an excellent bar and a wood fired pizza oven outside with a very nice seating area.

The Beeches restaurant was a real gem; very reasonably priced but beautifully presented lovely quality food which actually gives 'River Cottage' in Axminster a run for its money. We ate here twice with two different groups and every diner was impressed with each course of their meal. Consistently exceeded all expectations and so refreshing to find an on site restaurant that does not compromise on quality and service.

Part of the lodges and spa the restaurant is well laid out, spotlessly clean. Staff are amazing nothing is too much trouble. The menu not vast, which to me means all cooked freshly and not out if a freezer. The portions were generous and very tasty. Nothing was too much trouble. As it was two peoples birthday. A plasterer was brought out for both of us, as a gift from the restaurant. Amazing.

Very nice food. Staying on site so ventured down one evening. Came back twice more. Very nice food. Steak night a bargain. Very small if you want to be sure to get a table book well in advance as once they book tables out they don't re use them for bookings only on the chance a table is free.

Dined there for lunch this sunday. Limited menu as they had run out. This is not the best quality meal especially for the price. The meat was lovely. The roast potates are frozen. I like al dante veg but this wau hard my poot father could not eat it. The mun states cualiflower cheese but nine served. The yorkshire puds are stale and difficult to cut thr gravy is full of grease. Overall a disappointing meal. Cant speak for the rest of the food. Try the Hunyers Lodge for sunday lunch. Staff run aroud doing everything. Very limited staff who are quite open that they are overworked and expected to cover all roles.

My wife was unhappy with the amount of wine in her glass from the start but not confident enough to dispute it. When we got home and she poured 250ml into one of our larger wine glasses I could see why she was upset. Ordered a large glass, charged for 250ml but in my opinion got 175ml.

The food was really well presented and tasty a good place to eat with really friendly staff! The red wine sauce for the steak was lovely! We also had Sunday dinner which is up there with the best I've had. The pudding I had on the Sunday fresh fruit in a brandy snap basket with Chantilly cream was really good and if it had been on the main menu I would have had it every night! Will definitely eat there when we return to the lodges. If you live local I would really recommend you try it.

My husband and I stayed at the resort and had dinner here. I thought it was a lovely place. Very clean, tidy and I really liked the decor. The atmosphere was really nice, a fire going and nice music playing. The staff were very professional and friendly, we felt well looked after! The food was very nice, and reasonably priced too considering the high standard of it! I'm always impressed when a chef can make vegetables taste delicious! Desserts were delicious too and everything was extremely well presented. Lovely!!!!

My wife and I have various food allergies, so it was so good to be told that they can adapt the meals to meet our needs. And they did, GF, veg instead of potatoes, you name it, it was done. The food itself was excellent, all four of us had brilliant meals. Well worth a visit

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.
