Many thanks to Fiona and her team for welcoming us so warmly and the very efficient way they organised drinks and lunch for a group of 20. Great value food for the centre of London and best of all a great atmosphere. What a pub should feel like.

Pleasant typical central-London pub on the edge of Smithfield Market. It's all there; mirrors, artex, patterned carpet and lots dark wood furnishing. The temple-like bar was ably administered by two friendly bar staff so, by and large, it was a nice place to be. As a Shepherd Neame tied house, the beer on offer is understandably rather one dimensional. The pints of Whitstable Bay that we had didn't really seem on top form, in fact rather lifeless. Food wise, the menu is clearly no-frills typical pub food, but would it really be as plain as that. Well, yes, frankly it would. I liked the idea of a multi-choice sausage and mash option but wasn't overly impressed by three small specimens I received on a bed of sludgy mash in a lake of thin gravy with a few peas bobbing around. My pal's ham, egg and chips were just as unexciting. Thrown together on a plate and notable for the skinflinty amount of chips. Maybe it should be inferred from the menu that no-one will be trying very hard and that you'll get what it says on the tin but, really, with food like this it's hardly surprising that gastropubs are so popular. Could do better

Superb proper old London pub that has moved with the times without ruining the ambiance and period style with minor changes. Great location away from the main areas of St Paul’s but so close and of course near the iconic market area. Good old time inside with superb old look with loads of polished dark wood, decorative bar extending to the walls with loads of things to look at and read. Mega staff are on it, good selection of seating and bar stools. Reasonably long bar with all you need. As an Ale drinker I was in my element ordering well kept Ales. Full of life. Couldn’t help ordering a bar snack; succulent chicken wings were fab. Staff were great in quick response and spotting who was waiting. Music nice and low so people can speak. Perfect vibe. Don’t miss this gem!

We were staying at the nearby Premier Inn and needed some lunch before heading into the West End for a show. Walking along and saw the Shepherd Neame brewery sign which is a favourite of ours, so we popped in. I'm glad we did. Staff were accommodating with getting a table for us and the kids and very friendly. Menu choices were great and spoilt for choice. We had the sausage platter, and it was Amazing. We chose our sausage picks from the selection on the board. It was a lunch of dreams in my eyes and kept us full for the best part of the day. Plenty of bread and butter to accompany and mustard and onions. Kids had Ham, eggs, and chips and the other was a ham sandwich. They are proper cuts of Ham, which always points to good quality. Needless to say, there wasn't much left. Service remained good and the toilets were of a high standard ( personal test of mine in any establishment). It's a lovely area upstairs, should it get busy. Old fashioned pub, as how they should be. If we are back in the area , we would definitely come back. Thank you

An attractive and traditional looking pub just across the road from Smithfield Market, it’s reasonably compact internally and was pretty much full to capacity on my recent Tuesday evening visit, although I did manage to squeeze in to a small table in the corner. The menu offered a decent selection of pub grub dishes, including a number of sausages which appear to be something of a speciality, with today’s selection chalked up on a blackboard. I opted for the smoked haddock fishcakes with chips and peas and these came complete with a miniature bucket of tartar sauce. The fish cakes were unusually large and flat and perfectly adequate, if nothing spectacular, whilst the tartar sauce was very good (home-made?) but the chips were a little flabby and undercooked. However, given the location, I thought they were exceptional value. The menu listed them at £12.50, but I was charged £10.50. Whether they made a mistake, or there was some sort of a deal on, I’m not sure, but either price seems very good. Staff were very pleasant and friendly, and I’d happily return if in the area.

If you want to experience what it’s like having a beer that tastes like p*** mixed with olives in a place that is dank, dark and invokes the vision of 12th century execution chambers and smells like a public toilet located in an abattoir then this will be your perfect drinking spot. Best bit about this place is the fact there is an exit door.

This was not one of the best experiences. It is a classic London city pub but dark and well worn. The service was very welcoming and helpful but let down badly by the cooking and to some extent by the tired decor. My battered fish was square, hardly battered and not crisp, and with skin like leather. My friends speciality sausages were dry and overcooked. It was not so bad as to complain but I would look for somewhere else if I was in the vicinity in the future.
