I really want to love Erringtons Barn as I love their cheese and I am a local but having had food there twice now I won’t be going back for anything other than a coffee. On the second visit on Monday I ordered Croque Madame. I didn’t see the price before ordering as the menus hadn’t been printed off. The waitress was an over explainer which was rather annoying. The Croque Madame was very dry with not enough sauce on top and an overcooked fried egg so nothing unctuous about it and nothing else on the plate. I reported this to the waitress who said that she would feed it back to the chef but I wasn’t offered anything else to compensate for my unsatisfactory plate of food.My friend had a small plate of cheese which was miniscule and eaten in 2 bites for £7. She had asked for some salad to be added to the plate (which she would have paid for) but the waitress said that she would have to have a salad from the menu. I bought some cheese and it was only when I got home that I realised that I had been charged £16 for the Croque Madame. The food is just not good enough and the portions aren’t large enough to charge these prices. The menu also isn’t broad enough to appeal to anyone who doesn’t like cheese. On the plus side the coffee that I had there is fairly good. All such a shame.

My husband and I were on our way from Glasgow to Peebles and stopped at this cafe which was previously The Red Barn.We realised this was now a cheese shop and cafe. We looked at the menu and decided to share a cheese platter which was £16.We were extremely disappointed when this arrived as hardly enough for one person never mind two and far too expensive for what was provided. There were 3 small pieces of cheese all which tasted nice,a cooked plum,a spoonful of honey,2 small toasts,2 oatcakes and 1 flatbread. We also had coffee which was very nice.Total bill £22.Now I know that good homemade cheese is s expensive but we felt quite ripped off. We had asked the waitress what was on offer and she referred us to the menu but she did not tell us there was a board on the wall advising you could have breakfast rolls and filled rolls which were under £5 each.I only noticed this when I went up to pay the bill.We would have preferred this to a cheese board as basically we thought you could only get what was on the very different menu. We would come back if in the area as we liked the staff and the ambiance but would prefer rolls. There is plenty of parking and indoor and outside seating. There are also walks close by.

Unquestionably, the best coffee shop in the area! Dog friendly and free wifi.I’m so thankful that finally,I was able to find this spot for some good coffee. Can park for free grab a coffee and take the dog for a walk on the trails outside. Popped back in,had the breakfast, which is all made from Erringtons own farm local produce and just relaxed. Also own farm cheesees for sale in shop too.The atmosphere inside this coffee shop is calming and chilled. I will definitely rate them a five-star for everything that they provided. Truly amazing and will be back again and again.

We often visited The Big Red Barn, enjoying a scenic drive from East Lothian, today we were dismayed to discover it had changed hands. The menu has been drastically reduced, gone are the sausage rolls, pies, choice of soup, to be replaced with very little. Prices are expensive, ridiculously expensive. £15 for a Croque Madame, £4.70 (seriously!) for a pot of Scottish tea, £2.75 for a mug of Yorkshire tea. Very weird marketing there. The Croque Madame was nice, but hard to eat with very blunt knives, and please cook the egg a little longer, snotty eggs are not nice. The cakes were limited and uninteresting. Sorry, but we won’t be returning.

Visited with family including a young child and was very disappointed. Menu not available online or on social media anywhere so didn’t realise how much the menu had changed from the previous owners. Nothing atall suitable for a child to eat (sheeps cheese in almost every dish! And the couple of items that didn’t contain sheeps cheese were poor! Plain half baguette was solid, burnt and served with no butter, chips £5 for a small handful and drowned in salt! Croque Madame- burnt bread and hard to eat! Decided to try some cakes to rescue the meal but had to asked quite a few times to have the table cleared, most cakes had sold out and those that were left were dry and unappealing. Definitely won’t be returning, menu poor, staff poorly trained and over stretched and far too expensive for what it was.

First visit for a while and it has now been taken over by new owners. Personally I preferred the menu that was in place before but there still was a decent choice. Prices for what you get I think are quite hefty. Drinks are expensive. Staff were pleasant but it didn’t have the feel of really wanting to be there. Cleanliness was a bit lacking - crumbs on table, food on floor that hadn’t been swept up from a previous customer. The food was fine. Nice soup and bread. I just felt that the ambience was lacking and it didn’t feel as welcoming as perhaps it should.

Having heard that the BRB has recently changed hands I decided to check it out by treating my parents to coffee & cake. It was approximately 2pm on a Monday afternoon and it was encouraging to see the place so busy. Despite being obviously rushed off their feet, the servers greeted us with a smile and told us to sit wherever we could. There were 2 tables available and the staff cleared the one we picked straight away. There were some very tempting choices on the lunch menu, many making use of Erringtons own delicious cheese but we resisted the temptation of a second lunch and went look at the great selection of homebakes available. My parents both had Bakewell tart which was really tasty, fluffy and very generously served! I had a Chocolate brownie which was super-chocolatey, moist and scattered with chopped stem ginger on top which cut through the richness perfectly. The Tea and coffee (latte & cappuccino) were also superb. On the way out, we also bought some of their fantastic cheese and some proper Scottish Butter. All in all it was a lovely cake stop with really lovely friendly service. Next time though, we’ll make sure we have room to try some of their lunch options too!

What a disaster. I had been before the business had being taken over and gave it 5 stars. However on this occasion we sat for at least 15 minutes and were completely ignored by all the staff. 2 groups of customers came in after us and were served drinks and main meals while we hadn’t even been asked what we would like to drink. They were half way through their toasties when I decided I’d had enough and I obviously wasn’t important enough to get service. When I told the 4 people behind the till that I was leaving and was really annoyed, they all just looked at me and the main lady (who I assume was in charge) just said ohh, no apology, nothing! I’m assuming that the management is lacking as it looked very disorganised.I drove almost 40 minutes to this restaurant thinking I would treat my partner to a lovely Sunday lunch. I won’t bother ever again! It worked out for me as I discovered a hotel in Biggar which was really nice with much better atmosphere than this over rated tourist trap!

Our first trip to Errington’s Barn since it opened and I think I’ve found my new favourite local lunch spot. The re-fit is lovely (I’m a fan of F&B neutrals!) and it has a Scandi meets country warm style. The photos are great too, you’re able to see a little bit of the farm and exactly where the fabulous cheese is made. The chef is currently developing the menu but I had a very special toastie made with sourdough bread filled with my favourite Errington cheese - Corra Linn and wild garlic pesto (foraged by Selina that very morning!) and it was really delicious and very good value. I hope, as the menu develops, the focus on local, nutritious ingredients continues. Early days, but what a great start! Looking forward to being a frequent visitor.

Quite a small menu, which is fine, but it's VERY expensive for what it is. £4.70 for a pot of tea for example. £2.40 just for a mug of tea (quite literally hot water and a tea bag). £9.95 for a toastie. We had a can of fizzy juice, a tea, scone and biscuit and it was over £17! What we had was all decent enough but it's a cafe at the end of the day and the prices are just too high. For that reason, I'll be unlikely to return and will probably carry on the extra 5 minutes to somewhere in Biggar.

We have been coming here since it opened and always enjoyed the food although I don't like sugar in my cheese scone mixture. We went on Tuesday this week and the signs were as usual until we got into the car park where a notice said"takeaway only". We understand that there is a shortage of staff but we need to know what is on offer in advance so we can carry on down the road, if necessary. The breakfast roles were bacon or sausage so I asked if I could have an egg role but I couldn't even though they obviously had eggs. We couldn't understand why it was takeaway only because there seemed to be plenty of people about and we sat outside to eat our rolls. There was nothing wrong with the food but the chef/cook practically threw the rolls at us. What a shame, the barn is on a busy road between the motorway and Edinburgh, it should be buzzing at this time of year.

An absolute delight stumbling on this wonderful Cafe between Edinburgh and Biggar. We were on a flying visit, literally to Edinburgh and back in a day from Cheshire. With parking extremely difficult in Edinburgh, so we decided to go to Biggar instead. En route we saw the Big Red Barn, and starving as we were, decided to stop. So glad that we did as the food and the ambience was second to none. The staff were very helpful and welcoming too. There was a great choice for vegetarians (as we are) too. All food is freshly made with locally sourced ingredients, some grown on the premises. We would definitely visit again and stay a while longer, as there are acres of beautiful woodland on site to explore too. I urge everyone to go if ever you are on this road. There are plenty of road signs too, so you can't miss it.

The Big Red Barn had become a regular stopover over the past 2 years as I regularly travel alone with my dog. My normal good experience ended Monday 19th Dec. When i arrived a member of staff told me that the only way i'd get served was to leave my dog in the carpark, order food in the cafe than id have to carry my order to the shed before going and collecting my dog from the carpark.(Previous service has always ensured that the food/drink order was brought to the shed by a friendly and helpful waitress/waiter.) The woman telling me this was particularly abrupt and unhelpful. I left without ordering to continue my journey and found a truly dog accommodating place to eat a few miles down the road.

My husband and I stopped here on a day out for a coffee and something to eat having never been before. We ordered our food and drinks at the counter and I paid using my card. As it was taking ages to give me a receipt I said it didn’t matter and I would get it later. Food was nice, great coffee. Then had a wander round the shops and picked up a couple of gifts and went to pay at the food counter. Different girl on till and she tried to charge me for my food again. I explained that I had already paid and she went to check. On return I was told my original payment had not gone through. So I asked for the receipt showing this. She went to check again and came back and informed me that it was in the bucket and that the girl had come and told me about this. This did NOT happen and at no point did the girl who had originally served me show her face!!!!! Won’t be back.

I was at the Big red barn with a few friends over the weekend and was not impressed at all with the food or the prices here. I had the ham and chilli jam ciabatta. It really wasn’t up to much. And found the price was expensive for what I received. I also picked up on the staff looking very robotic and not very happy with the bosses wandering about. Prices need to be brought down and more on the menu I certainly won’t be back here.

Stopped at the big red barn on journey back home from Edinburgh. Despite the service being slow to begin with, I was served a great cup of coffee and a really good breakfast roll. Would stop again if passing and in need of refreshment.

My partner and I enjoyed a lovely lunch which was Orcandian Oatmeal Soup which was one of the best soups I have tasted in a long while. My partner also enjoyed it. We also had half a ciabatta whcih came with the soup. My filing was butternut squash with feta, cumin and chilli. Very tasty. I also had a mug of tea and we shared the carrot cake which was too die for. The staff where friendly, smiley and polite and we were served quickly even though it was busy. The over all price for lunch for 2 was very acceptable. Fab place which will always be one of my favourite places too visit. Keep up the good work

On our way to visit friends and also business trip, we were aware of the place as we had stopped off for coffee on a return trip home from the far north. We had another reason to call and that was to photograph the interior, the ceiling of the place to be exact. We arrived just on opening time ordered Drinks & Food, very friendly atmospher and relaxed feel. While waiting for food we spoke to a gentleman who we presume was the owner. The conversation was about the ceiling which was quite informative, he was ok with regard to taking photographs. Our food & drinks were served, it was a very enjoyable and our food was excellent. The Big Red Barn is an good stopping off spot for food and a leg stretch, it has outside catering weather permitting (Summer Months) a Wooded walk, all in all very very nice.

Stopped off on way back from Edinburgh with my wife as just fancied a coffee and a scone. Good varied menu but expensive, it cost us over £11 for two scones and coffees which were okay but nothing memorable. Won't be rushing back anytime soon !

Stopped for a quick lunch en route to Edinburgh - A702 is a very slow road, be warned. No sandwiches suitable for children. A little fairy cake for £3.30!!! Questioned this with the young girl serving - told it was gluten free so more expensive?!?! No customer service skills whatsoever. Very limited choice otherwise. Won’t be back.

Arrived here waited while before anyone came over to serveat us and food was very disappointing to say the least! My mum and myself were still hungry! We went to the little barn for something to take home a sausage roll and a pie nearly a tenner way over priced! And to be honest not that nice definitely wI'll not be returning here that's for sure.

Food was lovely - definitely recommend the sausage rolls, they’re a meal in themselves - the only thing I would say is I like a lot of sauce in pies and there wasn’t much in the chicken and leek pie, although still very tasty.

We've often passed this place but this time dropped in as we had read about it in "The Extra Mile" a great wee book about alternatives to grotty service station cafes. Had a splendid bowl of soup which was all we needed for a lunch on the road but we liked the place because it was very clean and the staff were all pleasant ant helpful. It also has a small but interesting collection of books and other goods for sale. Will definitely be back.

Despite being local to The Lee Burn, I'd never been before, until it was recommended to me by a couple of friends, so I thought I'd pop in on the route home from work for a quick pint. The Lee Burn has a pleasantly cosy and relaxing atmosphere and the staff are incredibly welcoming and expertly balance friendliness and professionalism, which other places in the area could take notes from The Lee Burn. Honesty can't fault it for where it is! Even though I'd only popped in, I definitely wanted to stay longer, which is probably the best compliment I can give. I'm usually the first one to want to go home and be in my safe space, but The Lee Burn is just that relaxing! Will be back in the near future :)

Staff are either ignorant or incompetent or both. having dined here before a few times my wife and I stopped in for lunch as walk-ins. I entered and asked for a table for 2, the lady behind the bar made a show of the checking availability on the iPad, many tables were reserved so we guessed that we might be unlucky. "Sorry, we have nothing available", "okay no problem" Her colleague then, right in front of me picked up the bookings iPad and addressed the couple behind me, who also didn't have a reservation. "Oh, you're in luck, we have one table left". As i said a mix of ignorance and incompetence We won't be returning!
