This hotel has always been a convenient choice for local business Xmas lunches and dinners. Although there is nothing to critisize about the food , I had a very unpleasant encounter at the front desk today . I just finished one Xmas lunch today and I am due to return for another Xmas party on this Saturday with my dance group , I forgot to book the Xmas set dinner for my husband who is disabled thinking that he might not want to join in. Last minute he said he would like a night out to have a bit of fun and company . So I asked the front desk lady if I could order food from the a la carte menu and he could sit with us and be served the food that he has chosen . I said I would pay for that dish today in advance . She said the food cost £23 but she wants the balance of the money ( the hotel charges for the set Xmas menu £37) to be paid too ! I said what , even without eating the Xmas dinner , and less the starter and dessert ? She said yes of course , because he would have the benefit of listening to the music !!!!! I was absolutely gobsmacked ! Wow , what a mean spirited place ! This is after our group of 40 just had lunch , and there will be another 40 -50 to come on Saturday! They have absolutely couldn’t see how money grabbing this attitude is ..! It of course doesn’t make business sense , as it means they would rather lose another customer’s business and create a horrible bad taste and bad will . The fact that they have loads of business this time of the year make them so mean spirited , complacent and arrogant ! Reverend Lyte who used to live there. He advocated humanity , warmth and community spirit and love . He wouldn’t have approved of this lack of human warmth , common sense and greed culture !

Returned after a couple of years to fine a beatifully refurbished bistro overlooking Torbay (ok it was misty) with a extensive menu. My confit duck leg was the best meal I've had for years and the seafood platter was equally good.

Went here for Sunday as had good reports, was seated in Mulbery Room, very disappointed, felt like a grubby canteen. The dirtiest wine glasses have ever seen on the table, suggest a new glass washer is needed! Waited ages for drinks. It was a carvery lunch which was very good, plenty of meat which was very tasty, and a great range of vegetables all piping hot. As with all carvery’s, there was a queue, which was slow and plates are too small. The view and patio areas are beautiful but other areas could do with an update and could be cleaner. But lovely food

Stayed for 2 nights given an upgrade, I’d hate to see the room we were going to get! Small room packed with to much furniture so couldn’t move . Tv didn’t work. Maintenance came out but still didn’t work properly. Breakfast was lovely although warm not hot, staff at the bar friendly. Made sure to use the pool which was good and jacuzzi was lovely. Here for our 33rd anniversary was a nice break from home but won’t be back, overpriced needs updating

An excellent family birthday party for 40 of us which was much appreciated by all who came. Good service, a delicious lunch followed by a cream tea later in the afternoon. The setting is perfect for adults and children alike, and the outdoor games were very popular! A big thank you to all the staff, especially to Jack who guided us through the planning and to David, the restaurant manager, who was so friendly & helpful.

It’s been a while since we had a lunch at Berry Head Hotel but as the weather was looking good we took the half walk to the Brassiere. Got seated nice and quickly although table not as clean as it could have been. Order taken and although it took 35 minutes to come out the salmon salad was delicious and there was a lot of it! If I could give any feedback I’d recommend less leaves and more of those delicious croutons. The staff were polite and efficient when required. Won’t leave it so long before we return.

We stayed for 1 night in a sea view room and the views were amazing but the room it’s self for the money was extremely small, basic, run down and for £265 a night I’d have expected more and air con or atleast a fan! Our bathroom had cracked tiles on the floor, there edges of the floor were dirty and you couldn’t move in the room with out it creaking. In fact if anyone in a room near us moved you could hear there floors creaking to. I get it’s an old building but it wasn’t what I’d expect compared to other places like it I’ve stayed. The views from the hotel, out side area and bar are again incredible but the bar staff were half hearted in their appearance and attitude I’m guessing as this is because they were busy and run off there feet but the way this place is portrayed and what it comes across as (a high end hotel) again let me down. A place like this you would have expected table service and the staff to be on point. With lots of people visiting for drinks, tea and food parking was a nightmare when we arrived and I felt a little let down that as a paying guest of the hotel we weren’t catered for more. I’d definitely not stay there again how ever I would go back for food and drinks but i couldn’t justify the nightly cost for what we experienced. Breakfast was good and in the morning we sat out in the out side area and again I found my self feeling taken away from the views and surroundings as although the tables had been cleared the floor was filthy and covered and in fag butts. This hotel could be incredible and with the revenue it’s making I’d see no reason they couldn’t spend some money on extra staff and some room updates. This could be a far better hotel and experience if there was a little more attention to detail. The price tag doesn’t equate to what is offered when you arrive but the views are incredible it’s a shame to have to write a review like this as I was expecting a lot more

A chance to have lunch together before the madness of a sailing championship begins. Lovely venue let down by slow service and flavourless food. My jerk chicken baguette was overpowered by the lumps of butter and was bland. The 'parmesan and truffle oil fries' were more like garlic fries with a dusting of cheese. Had to go and chase staff to order after we'd sat for over 30 minutes seeing people who arrived after us getting served first.

The Berry Head Hotel has an amazing terrace and fantastic views. It would be a perfect place for a meal, if they would make all of the front terrace non smoking. The grounds are big enough to put the smokers somewhere else. Lots of other people were complaining that smoke was blowing over them. The food was average for what you pay, but the staff were very nice. I had a problem with my meal but they refunded to make things right, so you can't ask for more than that. I will stick to one of their sandwiches next time. Please make the front terrace smoke free so that everyone can enjoy their meals.

Had Sunday lunch in the Restaurant to celebrate 2 birthdays( mine and father in-laws). The plates at the carvery were too hot and my elderly in-laws ended up burning themselves. Beef was sliced in half inch think slices and no one could cut through with blunt ancient table knives. Gammon was undercooked . Catalan fish stew was tasty, but the hake was overdone, and mussels were like rubber. The service was terrible. We felt as if we were in an episode of Fawlty Towers. Every time you looked to catch the eye of a waitress , she very skilfully managed to avoid meeting your gaze, and the restaurant manager just waved his hand at us never came. My husband asked for some candles in our deserts , and the manager came with candles after we started eating it and plonked a candle in each dish, without a holder and lit it . Not much of a special day.

We are presently staying in the apartments and ate in the restaurant after a pretty fresh storm so I was not expecting the offerings from the sea to be up to much and presently frozen. How wrong I was I was told that the fish was fresh and just landed and sure enough it was superb in every respect. Unusual to find an hotel that doesn't sell just boring typical hotel grub which I steer clear of. The food here is excellent with an imaginative team bringing you A1 grub which you actually want to eat!! Great

The usual dilemma with the Berry Head hotel…. Which side of the coin are you going to get? This time, sadly, we got the “Fawlty Towers” side Inexperienced staff, wandering round aimlessly. Seemingly all the regular experienced staff being prioritised to serve in whatever function was going on. Gave up waiting to place our food order and went to the bar. Gave up on waiting for someone to ask if we wanted a second round of drinks and went to the bar… again… Someone in “authority” eventually came over and asked if we were happy, and listened to our comments. No suggestion of a free drink or dessert etc. The food, when it came , was fine. But £86 for two courses, two drinks for two isn’t cheap, and you’d expect better service for this amount. An enviable location in summer, and most of the time, you put up with the often amateur hour service because of this. Not tonight though. No doubt , if he bothers to comment, Mr Bence will talk about highly trained, silver service, cruise ship experienced staff. Well, they certainly weren’t in the bar tonight

On Saturday 18th November, Brixham Bowling Club held it's annual Presentation Lunch in the Mulberry room at the Berry Head Hotel. The welcome and the service that we received was very professional and the staff in particular were very friendly and attentive. The owner himself took time to circulate amongst the guests to ensure that everything was satisfactory. A very enjoyable afternoon.

I visited the Berry Head Hotel for a family meal. I enjoyed the fabulous location and overall feel of the hotel. The service was good with attentive staff all evening. We ordered a selection of mains, fish and chips, Lamb Kofta, fish goujons and a burger. The fish and chips arrived with a good portion of chips these however were overdone and the fish (cod) was not freshly cooked. The lamb and goujons were very nice. The burger however was a little too tall to be eaten whole so had to be eaten in bits which is not my favoured way of eating a burger. The beef patty itself was a little to thick and solid to be enjoyed, sometimes less is more. Perhaps a smaller burger with a bit of onion would lighten it all up and make it more appetising. The cheese was very plastic in taste and the bacon undercooked. Only one of us had a dessert, the apple tart and that was really good. The hotel offered a good selection of beers, wines and after dinner drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic. As far as value for money goes I was somewhat disappointed with the food, such a shame for a beautiful venue.

My husband had the whole plaice which was enormous and would've been enough for two and although he couldn't finish it, loved it. The service from Mandy and Kyle was excellent. My only gripe... I have visited for coffee with different friends in the last week. We love the view and the location but wish that the bar staff could improve their customer relations. On both occasions we went past the reception with no acknowledgement from the receptionist. The bar staff were no5 friendly or welcoming. The tables in the bar area had to be cleared by me and my friend in both visits. There were biscuit wrappers on the floor. I didn’t see anyone clean the tables. My friend noticed on the first visit that the coffee machine was covered in finger prints, it was the same three days later, surely it should be cleaned regularly. On our second visit, trays were piling up on the tables, no member of staff came over, as we left there were three staff hanging around at the door chatting.

Booked a table for our wedding anniversary in The Brasserie. Was shown to a lovely table with fabulous views. However there were a few families with small children around us playing on hand held games with the volume up. We asked the waiter if there was any chance we could move to the other restaurant. He checked and we were moved straight away. Well what can I say .... the view again was stunning and service wonderful. We both had 3 courses and everything was excellent. Can't thank the staff enough for making our anniversary exactly how we hoped it would be. I would also highly reccomend afternoon tea here which we had on our last visit and cost less than one we had in a cafe in Brixham this week with just a scone and piece of cake with a sandwich. Will definitely return on our next visit.

Sadly a rather disappointing visit this time to one of our favourite hotels in the region. We did the dip and dine with family - the dip part was OK but the ‘dine’ part of our experience left a lot to be desired. We waited 1 hour 20 minutes for our lunch order to arrive in the bar, there were 8 of us but 4 had only ordered sandwiches, it wasn’t overly busy either as there was no guests outside as it was pouring with rain. When the food arrived some was good, but a couple of the dishes were really quite poor. All said this wouldn’t stop us from visiting again but they obviously had a bad day which we hope was a one off.

The food was ok but the service due to the discrimination of us not being a hotel guests was appalling. When we first walked in, we asked if it was possible to have a window seat and was told "no, nowhere near". From there the service went downhill very fast. We were sat at the very back of the restaurant. There was a table a couple of feet from us which was placed behind a wall with no view of restaurant at all. I now know that these tables are reserved for non-hotel guests like myself because they had the paper napkins on it. I was discouraged from ordering from both of the two menus we were given (mixing and matching) because the food from each were cooked in different parts of their kitchen. Based on waiters exasperation when I was about to do just that, I was clearly going to put him out by making him travel to another part of the kitchen to collect my food so I ordered everything from the one menu instead.Out of curiosity, I asked why other tables had bread placed on them and had fabric napkins whereas our table had no bread and paper napkins and were told that this was because we were not guests staying at the hotel. I then asked for a water glass as there were only small wine glasses on the table. The waiter enquired "what sort of a glass do you want?" I explained that I just wanted a larger water glass. This was brought to me under duress but brought to me none the less. We had our starter and then our mains. At no time did the waiter ask us how our meals were but fanwned over the hotel guests. The last straw came when both wait staff decided they weren't going to clear our table before they had cleared every single hotel guests table in the restaurant. They walked past our table empty handed to take orders for and deliver wine for other tables, to take hotel guests food orders and walk past our table to collect from the kitchen we were sat in front of. In the meantime our table was piling up side plates x 4 (2 for condiments and a bread plate each) a bread basket, 2 dinner plates 2 water glasses and a water jug oh and of course the alcohol glasses were currently drinking from all piled up on a small 2 person table. Everytime a hotel guest finished eating the 2 wait staff swooped in to remove the empty plate or bowl all the time walking past our full table to do so. They even stood 3 ft away from our table to survey who's table needed clearing...but that clearly was not to include ours. After 15 minutes of watching this behaviour I got up and moved our used cutlery and crockery to the empty table behind me and then sought out management. I managed by chance to speak to the owner who just happened to in the office. I explained everything and he was incredibly apologetic. It appears that this was not the first time the behaviour of the male waiter had been a concern to him and he said he was going to speak him about our treatment immediately. He said that the napkins "policy" and bread situation he would look at as it needs changing. The window seat situation whichever way they try to spin it, if you want a seat by the window it's probably never going to happen no matter how far in advance you book it because they keep those seats for hotel guests even if they haven't booked a table. A guest might decide to turn up and want to sit there!!! I must say that the owner listened to my complaints and responded in a professional manner seeming genuinely concerned by our experience. He reassured me that he would look into the points I had made and waved the bill. There is no doubt that dining at the Berry Head Hotel could be a really great experience. The menu is varied, the restaurant layout is well spaced with no concerns for social distancing and the views over the bay are lovely. However, if you are not a hotel guest, sadly, I can not honestly recommend dining here, as no one enjoys being treated as a 'second class citizen' and made to feel extremely unwelcome! We know from discussions back at our B&B that this is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident, and other guests have suffered very similar experiences previously.I sincerely hope that this situation is addressed and Berry Head Hotel can 'genuinely' boast a high level of customer service. We all deserve the opportunity to right our wrongs and we will visit again at some point in the future, and will hopefully be able to report that this sad situation is no longer an issue! We have also been offered a window seat the next time we decide to dine there. I truly hope that they change their policy and make it so that on the day of your arrival, if no hotel guest is booked into the restaurant, they offer that table to a non-hotel guest.

They are living on their past reputation, Breakfast when it arrives is either undercooked or cold, waiter s do not watch for people at the tables to need them, plonk food in front of you and go before you can complain. Tried evening meal wife’s was inedible my salad was all brown and wilted waiter took them away, We then went out for meals. We were in room 31 this is supposed to be their best room, ha, every morning we booked 4 nights, we were woken by drainage noises from the sink and bath outlet pipes, I could write a book, never never go there, makes faulty towers a 5 star.

We only randomly called in for a cup of tea. Guy at front desk was a bit grumpy but pointed us in the direction of the bar. The bar staff were charming and ultra helpful. Pot of tea with hot water and milk and a glass of tonic were ordered and delivered in a thrice and excellent value. Restrooms were clean and well managed. Covid precautions were good. Views across the bay are unrivalled. Will come back for afternoon tea or a meal.

Relaxed, friendly, nothing is to much bother. We had to move tables because of the weather and no fuss. Everyone was helpful and extremely welcoming. Love this place for its relaxed atmosphere and especially the views. We did not stay here, but if the cleanliness of the hotel is anything to go by I imagine the rooms are immaculate..

My husband and I were walking around Brixham and Berry Head's costal path when stumbling upon the Berry Head Hotel. The advertisement board spoke of 'the best views' across the bay and it was right! We sat at the bistro tables overlooking the bay, a perfect spot for relaxing and watching the sailing boats. Other reviews had commented below that there was a lack of staff or tables were not being cleaned. This was not the case on our visit. There was a lady (not one of the hottest days either) constantly spraying and cleaning all the bistro chairs and tables on the patio. She never tired and always had a smile on her face. The restaurant is 1 way only, a door for orders and a door to back onto the bistro. If you wanted to sit inside, this was either available by booking or small selection of tables available if you waited.I felt comfortable at all times when visiting Berry Head Hotel. Some visitors are confused by the one way system I feel and want to abandon rules when it suits. i.e using the wrong door to go back inside for the toilet. We both had fresh crab sandwiches which come with a side salad and some crisps. The white bread wasn't too appealing when it arrived however everything tasted lovely. There was a little bit of shell in my sandwich but I didn't let it bother me too much.As soon as we left, the lady cleaning the tables was very friendly and cleaned the table when she could. This is a lovely place to stop for a refreshment drink or lunch before continuing on up Berry Head and towards the Lighthouse

Booked this for a special birthday. Room was very comfortable and good sea view but meal was very disappointing. Staff unhelpful and disinterested. Asked for table in main restaurant overlooking sea. Thought we had booked this when booking made but on the night was told none available. Ordered an expensive bottle of wine that was plonked on table along with glasses and cork still in bottle. Had to call another waiter to open bottle. No offer to pour or try wine.Staff were unhelpful. Food order was wrong when it arrived despite having to wait over an hour thus had to wait a further 30minutes for it to be rectified. When bill came it was wrong too. This will remain an unforgettable evening and birthday for the WRONG reasons. Very disappointing.

Came away bitterly disappointed. This was to be a 'milestone ' birthday treat. We were looking forward to a beautiful afternoon tea with a table covered with a crisp, white tablecloth, laidened with delicious teatime treats overlooking Torbay. The experience was nothing like we had hoped for. No one to meet and greet us upon arrival. We were initially ignored then directed, not shown, to a cracked brown formica table 'set' for us with two paper napkins, knives and forks and two glass tumblers, in a corner, away from the main dining area and the window. Eventually, we were approached by Heidi, whom we assumed to be restaurant manager. We asked to be reseated and a table was cleared for us. We were served a pot of tea for two and awaited our food. An hour later, we were still waiting. During that time we witnessed several disgruntled customers complaining. Although there were three waiters present, we did not receive any service or attention from them. After an hour, Heidi reappeared and was very apologetic. She offered us a complimentary glass of Prosecco. Our booking had been for 3pm. By now it was 4.30. The food arrived and like the tea table, was nothing like we were led to expect. The sandwiches were not as described on the menu. Some of the fillings were spread so thinly that they were difficult to identify. The pastries were missing. The cakes were not the patisserie style fancies shown in the promotional pictures, but more like traybakes cut into different sized chunks and didn't seem particularly fresh. Our teapot was refreshed and we were given new cups and "saucers", which turned out to be side plates. Heidi did try to make us comfortable, but by that time, all hope of enjoying our afternoon was lost. We did ask a waiter for a box to take our cakes away but were told "We don't do boxes" and we're directed to a pile of paper napkins and told to help ourselves. The three saving graces are; At £25, it wasn't the most expensive afternoon tea. I would have paid more for a first class experience. Heidi did her best to keep customers happy, with what appeared to be very little support from her colleagues. Whatever the Imperial are paying her, it's not enough. The one thing that the hotel did deliver on was the magnificent view, but I give the Imperial no credit for that whatsoever. Lastly, I sent an email to the Imperial later that day, and to add insult to injury, now, almost a week later, have had no response. NB. Pictured - what the Imperial's advertising led us to expect. NOT what we got !
