Called in for a late lunch after a morning fishing. The fish and chips were excellent. The landlord is obviously passionate about the food. Call if you can you will not be disappointed.

We live close to the Beresford Arms so I cannot comment on whether or not it is a good place to stay overnight. However, having been there for a few meals recently I can now, once again, recommend it wholeheartedly. It has had a mixed history being first class 50 years ago and again in the late years of the last century and the early years of this century but, unfortunately, it suffered lean times between the years when it was a local gem, most recently in the mid 2010s. The present owner, who lives locally, took it over in 2018 I think, refurbished it beautifully, altered a largely redundant function area into four very attractive bedrooms and engaged knowledgeable, friendly, capable staff. Meals are cooked to order from a comprehensive menu so are, invariably excellent although the attentive waiting staff check that every meal is to the customer’s satisfaction and replace it should this not be the case. Meals are complemented by a thirst quenching range of quality beers and wines as well as soft drinks. The cost will not dismay even the miserly in our midst. The restaurants is well worth visiting with the caveat that, such is its good name, it can be very busy at lunchtime on Sundays. I understand that the ‘hotel’ accommodation is also worthy of consideration by anyone thinking of holidaying in this wonderful part of our beautiful country.

Having visited on many occasions we have always had great food . Unfortunately the steak my mum had was very tough so left half of it , we mentioned it when the table was cleared . The waitress did enquire that are meal was ok but as we hadn’t even started the steak we said it was ok . Very quickly the steak wasn’t an issue . The handling of the situation was disgusting . The manager then said she had eaten the steak ?.? . I generally praise establishments on this platform as I’m sick of social rubbish . But on this occasion it was justified . We said we would not return and manager basically said so !! Oh dear back to the Ridley Arms like so many others .

Well having seen the website and heard great things i have say it was very poor quality food. Roast beef burnt and tough. Roast potatoes cooked the day before and reheated this does not work. Gravy had little flavour. Lemonade was flat! The staff were very attentive and helpful. The food let the place down so won’t go back. Definitely not worth more than 3 star for the food. Just cook the food fresh and use decent beef. We did not complain with a 102 year old and two tired small children we were thankful that the deserts and coffees were good.

We stayed here for one night as a jumping off point for our trip. Overall, we had a great stay and would definitely come back. The good: All of the staff in the restaurant and bar were wonderful. They were friendly, polite and helpful. They are a credit to the hotel and definitely deserve some praise. There were lots of drinks options in the bar and we were served efficiently. Our evening three course meal in the restaurant and our breakfast were both cooked and seasoned perfectly. There was orange juice and tea/filter coffee provided at breakfast, with food to be chosen the night before and an estimate of when you want it to be served. There is an option to have a starter at breakfast of cereal, fruit, toast etc and lots of breakfast main options. The room was spacious, was immaculately clean, and there was lots of storage. The shower pressure was excellent and the bathroom modern and tidy. The bed was lovely and soft and the bedding good quality. If you prefer a firm mattress you may not prefer it but if you like a soft one you will have the best night’s sleep. The look of the hotel in the rooms, bar and restaurant is very good and has a homey feel. I especially liked the warm lighting in the shared areas as it felt cosy in the evening and like a gentle start to the day. The bad: When I edited my booking as the email said I could, this made a duplicate not an edited time. I did not know this. I received a cancellation so re-booked. Upon arrival I was told I had reserved two tables of two - this discussion did make me a bit uncomfortable as the assumption seemed to be that it was my fault. I suggest that if it happens again, a template email could be sent out explaining why the second table that the person is not aware of has been cancelled. I suspect this one is a budget issue due to the current rate the cost of everything is increasing and isn’t a quick thing to fix. The keys for rooms 1-4 are very fiddly both in the entrance and for the room door. We had to go back to reception for help. However, help did come quickly.

We went for Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago, booked for 3pm, shown promptly to our table. Only another two tabes in the restaurant were occupied. The bar wasn’t busy either and yes we were a little on the late side for lunch. Took our order at 3.15 and they were out of beef, the other two options were chicken or belly pork, I opted for the latter, it was dry and overcooked, I did mention this to the waiter and got no response so I asked another waiter for some extra gravy, again stating that the meat was dry, again no acknowledgment. I was brought some extremely tasteless gravy which didn’t really help. Ticked that one off the list.

Stayed 2 nights mid week in the 2-bedroom Stable Suite. Really lovely ground floor suite, nice and neautrally decorated, handy kitchenette to make drinks and a lovely garden that we were lucky enough to enjoy as the weather was lovley. Chilled water and milk in the fridge, plus some biscuits waiting for us on arrival were very welcome. Easy to relax in front of the TV (though if I'm being picky the sofa wasn't the comfiest). Choice of breakfast dishes was good and portions generous. We also ate at the pub both nights. It is good to see a choice of dog free and dog friendly areas to choose to dine in (well done for not alienating anyone who can't be around dogs). The best thing was the staff - every one that we met was warm, welcoming and helpful.

Had Sunday lunch here today for Mother’s Day. Been many times previously over the years for Sunday lunch, before and after being taken over and the renovations, and have always enjoyed the excellent food. Today however, was an absolute cut above all of those other times we’ve eaten here! My husband and I had the beef which was sublime, our 2 sons had the chicken which was excellent, but quite honestly the whole plate of food was amazing! The word ‘flawless’ was mentioned and I can tell you that that is the 1st time i’ve ever heard that from my family! 😳🥰 I was the only one in our party of 4 who had a dessert, the rhubarb and custard Eton Mess and this was absolutely one of the most delightful desserts i’ve ever had and the presentation of it was stunning! We’ve had many excellent Sunday lunches in various places and The Beresford has always been one of the best but today’s food was just exceptional. Thank you so much. 🥰

A beautiful, quiet village and a lovely stay overall. For the first Monday of half term it was quiet. Room was small but clean, shower room spotless. Food good and looked great too! Staff friendly and attentive! Unfortunately we were woken at 630 by a truck reversing and letting all know it was doing so. We also found the shower pressure very poor, it hardly rinsed off the soap! We came home to get a proper shower. Overall, we’d recommend!

Traditional Sunday lunch can be a lovely thing and I would argue that the quality of the meat served is a major factor in rating an establishment. I have tried the Beresford twice recently and the meats have been a disappointment. Firstly, the belly pork, instead of being slow cooked, tender and succulent, was a square of very tough pork with a leathery skin which was too tough to eat. Possibly cooked well in advance and reheated or kept hot far too long, a big disappointment. On the second visit, I opted for the beef and I’m afraid it was another dud. Whist commendably pink inside, it was a very meagre portion of very tough stringy beef cut exceptionally thinly. However, if it had been any thicker, I don’t think it would have cut with a normal knife and fork. The accompanying veg were perfectly OK if a little underdone. On the plus side, the staff were very pleasant and attentive and the venue is generally very welcoming and cosy if a little bit stuffy when there’s a full house.

We stayed 2 nights with our dog in one of the dog friendly rooms. The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff, Nick and Emily, were friendly and a pleasure to speak to. We had a very tasty burger and side of pigs and blankets, the full breakfast was amazing, fish and chips delicious and the avocado/eggs on toast also a delight. Quiet village of Whalton has no shops but 10 mins drive into Morpeth for anything you need and plenty of coffee shops etc. The cost of the stay was made reasonable by the hotel matching the price shown on booking.com so we booked direct which helps the establishment by not paying commission to booking.com 😊 We would highly recommend and will look to stay again. This was our third visit, bringing different friends each time. Unfortunately it was a case of 3rd time not so lucky. I have rated 4 because the previous two occasions were good, but when we went on a Saturday lunchtime it was a whole different and disappointing experience. First, we had specifically booked in advance in the restaurant. On arrival we were directed to the bar only, due to a large private party in the restaurant. This was poor service as we had booked well in advance and there had been time for the management to contact me to advise on the situation and to offer the option of the bar had we wanted to take it, or not. The bar was full. Despite the real fire burning, was chilly sitting near to the door, which another customer had to keep getting up to close after leaving customers. And then the food……. When we asked the waitress if there was likely to be a delay on ordering due to the large party, she could not give us a clear answer. ( we had overheard the possibility of an hour wait at one point!). So we ordered quickly and after a wait ( although not an hour) it arrived. Disappointingly, both courses were served barely warm. The flavours were still there, but the temperature took away from the overall enjoyment. Whilst I accept having a large private party places some pressure on the establishment, it would be preferable if those who have also pre-booked could be advised in advance of the situation and given an informed option of whether to continue with the booking. We had booked also for a special occasion, and had carefully chosen the restaurant ambience as opposed to the bar, the latter being where we ended up. So overall, two of three were good, but the third was disappointing.

We popped in from lunch as we were travelling from Edinburgh to Scarborough. Glad we did as we were blown away by the welcome and the quality of the food. All of it was excellent. We had a braised beef cottage pie, haddock and chips and the children ate from the kids menu. 100% recommend. They had a 50% offer off mains in January and February which is exceptional considering the quality of the ingredients and cooking. It’s a shame we live so far away as we would love to come back on a regular basis. We eat out a fair bit and this ranked very highly.

Staff were polite but not very attentive despite it being a quiet midweek lunchtime. The food was limited in choice compared to other Northumberland pubs and although it was OK it was far from what you'd expect in a 'gastro' pub. Oven chips aren't acceptable unless you've gone into a Chef And Brewer as a last resort. Also, The Beresford Arms is a beautiful old pub in a beautiful rural village but the inside is, as others have said, like a modern cafe. Keeping with this theme there is no ale of any kind on offer. No cask ale, no draught ale, nothing. Plenty of lager but the nearest thing they had to ale was Worthington's. I'm not veggie and the burger was OK, if nothing special, but if you are a veggie there is very little choice other than a cheese omelette.

We had heard great things about The Beresford Arms and as we’re usually creatures of habit we decided to try somewhere new for a Saturday lunch. Unfortunately, we left feeling disappointed as our experience did not live up to the recommendations we’d received. We stood waiting for quite a while before being seated and the service was average once we were seated. We were shivering the entire time as the whole restaurant area was freezing cold. The food was edible but below average, made worse because the menu is not cheap. The lamb was tasteless and the “banger of the week” wasn’t anything to shout home about. The small front area of the pub as you enter has a lovely cosy feel to it, but once you get to the restaurant bit the decor is minimalist and cold which doesn’t match the country pub vibe you get from looking at the pub from the outside. Sadly won’t become one of our regulars.

Booked in advance for our first night dinner in the area and it didn't disappoint. We had drinks in the bar area on arrival and then were shown to table. Interesting starters were offered but we went straight for mains. Mixture of "banger of the week" , burger and chicken dishes- all beautifully cooked. The burger was sublime, with onion rings, coleslaw and thick chips. The Eat out to Help out made this amazing value but it's reasonably priced anyway. Everyone was very friendly and we left, feeling we had had a great meal.

The service was great and no complaints about the food. I had the lamb chop special and the rest had roast dinners. Mine was fine and roast were said to be good. Beer good and wine reasonable. All in all I would recommend the Beresford and I will go again on an evening. Thanks to all for putting up with the noise of granddaughter happily shouting throughout.

Eventually stayed and had food at the"Berrie" as it's known by the locals, as we've previously just had a drink at the bar while passing, and I know it's an easy excuse to say, we've been meaning eat here for age's, and only just realised what we've been missing out on, absolutely first-class food, no if's or but's, an easy uncluttered menu to choose from, with one special, that was described to us before we ordered, on this occasion it was grilled mackerel on a bed of ratatouille and chorizo with samphire, absolutely bursting with all different fresh flavours, I had the sausage, mash, veg, gravy with crispy onions, and its got to be pointed out, everything was just perfect, veg was al dente, made all the more palatable with the 50% discount on the "eat out to help out deal" even had desserts which you will see in the following photos, and at the risk of sounding like I've been paid to write this review! the staff were great coping with all the extra measure's in place for the situation the restaurant trade currently finds itself in! One-way systems, signing in for the track and trace, all drink's delivered to your table, as no standing at the bar allowed, masks and hand sanitising regularly, all of which take's extra time, effort, and cost, it's nice to see happy staff doing their jobs on a fully booked evening,And no prizes for guessing that we will definitely be back, and I would sincerely suggest you got yourself a long there too!...JMS ✔

Three of us called for lunch, we all opted to dine off the light lunch menu - 2 courses for £10. For starters 2 of us had the liver pate which came with a small slice of toast, the other starter was carrot and fennel soup which came with a mini baguette. For mains we ordered, mini fish cakes and chips, sausage and mash, and a vegan thai green sweet potato curry. The fish cakes (balls) and the sausage and mash were fine however although I was delighted to see on arrival that the thai curry was green rather than the more common red the content of it was extremely disappointing. It consisted of perhaps half a small sweet potato cut in to wedges - however it had not been peeled so was not pleasant to eat. The only other thing in the curry was four chunks of courgette, not any onion or other vegetables at all. It was not that they didn't have any other veg available as the sausage and mash when it arrived as well as gravy had peas, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and crispy onions!.

On a cross country drive came across this pub, restaurant in a attractive village. Recently redecorated giving a modern appearance without detracting from the heritage features. Had well presented fish cakes for lunch which were good value.Found they did two pies and chips for£15 on Tuesdays. Good value with tender steak in a home made pie. A very satisfactory meal. Well worth a visit if in the north east.

Thus s a typical country pub with nice bar and good beers. However, it has been enlarged and now has a restaurant and facilities for parties and a wedding venue. Food is good and interesting. Well worth a punt

Haven’t been here for a number of years, and the place has had a makeover of sorts. The bar, for us, seemed more homily than the restaurant area, which are two large rooms on the the front of the building. The bar has been tastefully refurbished and is an improvement on what there was before.A warm welcome from the staff but the food was uninspiring and rather bland.

Whilst on a short break in the area using Trip Advisor we came here for lunch, not sure what to expect but going on previous reviews hoped it would be OK.We arrived in the sunshine, the bar was beautifully decorated! and we hoped the food would not disappoint. Lunch time special was ideal, excellent value and the food was excellent. The main menu was very appetising too. We used the bar as we had our dog with us, dining room looked a treat also. Staff were excellent too, catering for unexpected guests staying also.Highly recommended, sorry we didnt get back to try more of the menu - mussels were lovely and the shepherds pie a treat The pate looked like a home made terrine and it was delicious too.

This was a visit for lunch at The Beresford Arms that has changed image and quality since new owners took over. It is now a restaurant with a bar and serves excellent food of a high standard. The decor and layout is modern, bright and welcoming. It was a quiet midweek lunch for a party of five. We were well looked after and could enjoy a relaxing catch up with very good quality fayre at an extremely attractive price. A full menu was available but we opted for the 2 courses for £10 and did not expect much for the price. However many choices were on the menu with the volume and quality similar to that of a full price evening meal. There is something for everyone here. Well done Beresford.

Went here again today for lunch with a friend. Good menu choices and cosy restaurant with fire burning and lovely paintings on the walls. Staff attentive, pleasant and efficient. Both our choices were nicely cooked and presented and much enjoyed. Good size car park on site and wide range of beers/wines etc on offer. Can wholeheartedly recommend this village pub and look forward to returning in the next few weeks.

For a Monday in March the place had a jazz group in and performing. We went for the food as we have been before and were very happy with it. This time did not disappoint. Simple Fish n Chips with home made (tasted like it to me) tartar sause well cooked fish with a portion size to be happy with. Chips tasted like the chips we remember. Rice pudding sounds average fare but... the rice was not only fully cooked but still wasdecernable. the cream based base was velvety and had a wow factor not normally associated with pub standard stuff. It gave me the warm inside glow on a cold evening. All rounded off with a good cup of coffee and a delightful mint chocolate. The attentive staff looked after us very well. They also fulfilled additional requests of some customers with a “can do and did “ attitude that must be noted. The jazz started and to our supprise it was soft and calm. None of the jarring intensity it can have. It is becoming a regular place where we have not been disappointed. So we can easily recommend itA village pub that gives more. Keep it up team you are making it a good place to visit.

I have a confession to make and it’s that for our family Sunday lunch, this venue was in fact not out first choice. We had originally intended to visit another well reviewed eatery but found it to be fully booked. Never the less, we were happy to visit following a quick look at its TA reviews and booked a 3pm lunch for three adults. One of us was on the latest ‘lose three stones in a week diet’ but the staff accommodated this without batting an eye lid. Well all opted to miss the starter purely because we didn’t want t appear greedy and settled for the old mains and desert combo. I fancied most of the starters as well but the person on the diet would have given me daggers!Only Sunday lunch is served on a Sunday and the weekday menu is not therefore available so if you don’t fancy Yorkshire pudding etc, look elsewhere. The portions were very generous (we had chicken and beef although other slaughtered animals are available) together with lots of veg and a Yorkshire pud large enough to hide Yorkshire under it. Lashings of hot gravy together with very friendly and helpful staff made for a very enjoyable main course. A sticky toffee pudding, an Eton mess and a chocolate sponge later (so much for the diet) we settled our very reasonable £57 bill. This included a drink each with dinner. The pub has recently undergone an extensive yet very tasteful refurbishment and includes an open fire in the bar which was very welcoming. The pub looks chic in its new decor and taken together with the lovely food and lovely staff, it’s a sure hit. We will return.

To finish after a morning walk with a group of friends at nearby Bolam Lake and Shaftoe Crags we had booked a table at the Beresford Arms for lunch. We received a warm welcome from staff and the landlady, who I believe has only recently taken over the establishment. The bar had a welcoming open fire and is dog friendly, ideal for a group of walkers. After drinks were served, there was a nice selection of local cask ales and food was ordered we congregated at a table close to the fire. We chose from dishes from a varied and appetising menu, mine being the Beresford Arms Pork Pipe, which turned out to be both unusual and an excellent choice, very enjoyable and good value. The pub is a little off the beaten track, in a pleasant village and is well worth a visit.

Managed to get a table for 8 for a pre-Christmas family and friends get together. Asked for and got a table in the function room where a local trio we love were playing. The hospitality at the Beresford Arms was great. Lovely bar, attentive and efficient staff but warm and friendly with it. And the food was out of this world. Modern, beautifully presented and such a varied choice, all at a really good price. Ham terrine, haggis scotch eggs and broth for starters went down a treat. Fantastic main courses including lamb, steak, huge burgers and the tastiest sausage and mash were finished off to everyone’s satisfaction and then we sat back in total contentment until those who weren’t too full headed for the dance floor. We had a really great night here. The Beresford has been through its ups and downs over the years but the new owners have restyled it beautifully throughout and with the great team they have in the kitchen and front of house they have made this famous old inn one of the best pub/restaurants in Northumberland.

Went for sunday lunch.Starter - Broccoli and stilton soup was watery and tasteless. There didn't seem to be much, if any, stilton in there. Rather unpleasant.Main course - roast pork WITH NO CRACKLING, despite it being advertised on the menu. If you don't have any, then let people know. I wouldn't have ordered this dish had I known there was no crackling. Aside from that it was a tasty dinner with good yorkshire puddings and nice gravy. We also requested sauces (apple, mint etc) when we ordered which did not turn up. We had to ask 3 times before they arrived by which time we'd nearly finished our meal.Afters - tiramisu was stodgy and heavy like it had been made with nothing other than cream. Tiramisu should be light and fluffy. I could only manage a few mouthfuls.

Stopped for lunch as passing and v hungry.Have been some years ago . The seating outside at the front is rather tired. The interior seems to have had a makeover and is looks fine and clean. We ordered scampi peas and chips and the prawn saladGiven that it was far from full the wait was surprisingly long for this .The scampi was terrible . The chips simultaneously externally burnt and soggy . The peas tasteless . The whitest mayonnaise I have ever seen - is there any egg in this ? I didn’t expect it to be freshly made on site but at least get Hellmans mayonnaise !!The prawns were chewy and inedible with a salad consisting of leaves and a few slivers of pepper Debated to demand refund but decided to just leave.Disappointing so many great places to eat in Northumberland but not this one .

Family lunch in the recently reopened village pub - great makeover gives a homely contemporary feel to the interior and the changes to the layout improve both the drinking and dining experience. Lunch from either the bar or restaraunt menu gives plenty of choice — the sea bass and duck confit were very good with good quality local produce well presented - desert menu simple but satisfying. Overall a great addition to the eating options around Morpeth.

After looking for somewhere to eat on the way back from a trip to Kielder, we stumbled upon Whalton and saw the Beresford Arms and decided to eat here. The pub was quiet and the dining area was empty, although it did start to fill up after we arrived, obviously not due to my presence of course. The menu is small, but covers pretty much all types of food.We first ordered drinks and arrived immediately. My partner went for the steak & ale pie, with vegetables and Roast potatoes. She very much enjoyed the pie, which i obviously tasted and also thought it was nice. I went for the pulled pork sandwich and chips off the specials menu. Again, this meal was very good and the pulled pork was great. We thought about a pudding but we were that stuffed we simply couldn't!The woman who greeted us, didn't catch her name, was very kind and informative and the man behind the bar was also very friendly. The meal was very reasonably priced and was a very good meal. Will definitely visit again if i find myself in the Whalton area.

Was very disappointed with our Easter lunch today. We booked the table weeks ago and I got an e-mail confirmation, but when we arrived they had no record of our booking. Fortunately, there was room for us in the restaurant. The menu was VERY limited and there was no white meat available and the only vegetarian option was the totally uninteresting nut roast. The only menu was a big blackboard, which kept having to be moved about so that different parties could look at it. Fortunately the menu was so short that that didn't entirely matter. The service was sloppy. Our dinner was supposed to come with roast potatoes, but came out without them. I should have realised this might happen as I had heard one of the waitresses ask a party if they had all their food now! The roast potatoes came out in a bowl after we asked for them. The food was quite good, but my meat was cold, suggesting it had been carved sometime before being served. We asked to see the board again to look at the dessert options and they brought it, but almost immediately took it away again so that we didn't get a real chance to look at it. The dessert options were predictable and very limited, so that only one of our party ordered one. We heard a complaint about coffee being served at another table and found that the customer had been served coffee in a cup without a handle! Surely that should never been allowed to leave the kitchen? We ordered two coffees, but only one was brought, so we had to wait for another one. In fairness, they didn't end up charging us for the coffee because of the delay. There were three waiters, but they didn't seem to have designated areas, which meant we kept being asked the same questions three times. This used to be an excellent place to get Sunday lunch, but the new management don't seem to know how to deliver good food at a decent price with good service. We won't be returning.

We stopped as a family whilst on a bike ride in Northumberland on Easter Saturday. We were only looking for drinks and sandwiches and maybe cake to eat at one of the outside tables which were all vacant. When asking to order in the quiet bar, hence not busy, the likely manager informed us that there would be a long wait because the kitchen was busy. We asked for an indication of how long we'd have to wait. Would it be 10 minutes or might it be an hour? The reply was "It won't be 10 minutes, but it won't be an hour!" Since this didn't really help, we asked again for some idea of how long we might wait. The reply, in a very rude tone, was "well it won't be 10 minutes". So we thanked him and left. Within 30 minutes we were at Jans in Ponteland enjoying sandwiches and drinks and friendly service. I cycle through Whalton regularly with a cycle group, but won't be stopping at the Beresford Arms again. To appeal to cyclists the service needs to be quicker and far more friendly. I'll copy this review to the local cycle groups as there are far better options in the area.

Chicken breast with blue Stilton sauce was bland, chicken over cooked, no taste of Stilton in the sauce, soggy veg. Ordered dessert - staff were not aware of variety of ice creams. Not enjoyable at all. Will never go there again. Want to mention have gone there for a meal periodically over the past 35 years and when we were there, had no complaints.

Large chain, standard menu offerings, busy, noisy setting, but good sea views, nice outside area. Food came quickly once managed to order at the busy bar. Burger sauce was the best item. Small burger Pattie, creamy coleslaw, hubby had monkfish scampi, bit over battered. Both sets of chips under cooked, when we were asked how our meal was, our reply was just received with blank stare and no response before waiter cleared our plates and left! Buffet breakfast the following morning as we expected! Basic sausages, overcooked black pudding, the bacon, mushrooms and hash browns ok, had run out of baked beans, but at least you could order different eggs if didn’t fancy fried.

It was ok but nothing to push the boat out for. My daughter wanted chicken tikka panini but apparently had no tikka, I asked for a sandwich on brown bread cake but they had no brown bread cakes left. Really?? And this was only just after noon. Nothing special about the ham sandwich which all in all tasted bland. The dog ate most of it.
