We have stayed at Brend Hotels before and this did not disappoint. The staff are wonderful. The food was excellent. The location ideal. The town is a short walk from the hotel with a great variety of independent shops a tasty restaurants. The hotel was beautifully decorated ahead of Chrismas..a great stay.

I'm having difficulty believing that this is the sister hotel to The Victoria. We were staying (as always) at The Victoria but couldn't get a reservation there for a family lunch, so booked The Belmont. Our family was already in the bar when we arrived and had told the Barman that they were there. We got our drinks from the bar and waited for someone to come over to tell us our table was ready. After a long wait, I was despatched to ask if we should move to the restaurant. I approached a group of three - one of whom was obviously a manager - who studiously ignored me (I was close!) and then rapidly dispersed, so I asked the Barman, who told me to go the restaurant when we were ready, which we did. Yikes! The manager reappeared and couldn't have been less welcoming, to the point where we felt positively awkward - and that set the standard for the rest of the staff, from the waitress who couldn't find her way around the ordering system so orders had to be repeated over and over, to the Sommelier (I assume) who addressed the men as 'Sir' but the women as 'dear', without warmth. It has been many years since I felt so patronised. The experience could have been saved by the food but it was bland to the extent that much of it was left. I did wonder if maybe the good ignoring, the complete lack of warmth from the staff and the patronising was my experience alone but as we exited my brother turned to me and said ' how rude was that Manager?!'. We literally ran for the loveliness of The Victoria, where Ray greeted us like old friends and Aiden rushed over to greet us and get our drinks. Were they having an 'off' day? I don't know - but why the staff in The Belmont are to a man and woman, so disengaged and/or poorly trained/plain rude and the staff right next door in their sister hotel are so obviously at a completely different level of hospitality, is beyond me. It was my parents 62nd wedding anniversary. We can't repeat that. For their 63rd, I'll be booking the celebratory lunch at The Victoria, well in advance!

Very English, traditional restaurant BUT - consistently great food. Service is EXCELLENT. Wonderful place and probably the best Sunday lunch in east Devon, we booked last minute for 10. Fully accommodated. What’s really nice is that staff turnover is very low - which means that the management look after their staff. Highly recommended Thank you for making Catherine’s 50th special.

Just completed another four day holiday at the Belmont . The hotel was its usual excellent standard . The only problem was the standard of service must have been affected by the shortage of staff .i must mention Larry and Ben who still gave us the good service we have been used to in past visits . Where to start with this wonderful restaurant. While staying at the hotel we decided to celebrate our first wedding anniversary with dinner at the restaurant. The service was impeccable from start to finish and every aspect of it to silver service standard. The restaurant is spacious with traditional decor - comfortable chairs with arms, beautiful drapes and stunning chandeliers. The crisp white table linen is immaculate and each table is provided with bottled water. The menu is extensive with a la carte options and Table d'Hote - if you wish you can have a full six course meal. We opted for the Table d'Hote menu and had three courses. The starters were beautifully presented - the right portion size and delicious. The mains that followed were equally as delicious and the vegetable accompaniments were fresh and tasty. Dessert was also perfect. The staff were attentive and covid measures were being adhered to in detail - staff were wearing gloves to set tables, all were wearing visors at all times and each table was sanitised after use including the chairs. Overall - a wonderful dining experience.

Walking on a sunny Saturday, four of us went to the Belmont for lunch. The maitre d' standing outside said that, if we found a free table on the terrace, someone would come to see us. We waited. Residents were getting preference. Twice we raised a hand and made eye contact. Eventually our order for drinks and 3 ploughman's lunches and a pate and toast was taken. Pretty plates arrived and we were wished the equivalent of "bon appetit". The staff disappeared but there was no bread. Again a hand had to be raised and one small tea plate with 4 miniature bread rolls arrived. The ploughman's was tasty, with good quality ham, pate, a variety of cheeses, salad and chutney (£14). As the plates were cleared we mentioned the paucity of bread and the waiter apologised. On paying the bill the bread issue was raised again. We were told then that we could have asked for more bread. Is this a 4* hotel? Service is better in a local pub. Certainly in most restaurants/cafes in France/Germany, bread is provided with most meals without hesitation. Bread is surely not an optional side dish for a ploughman's lunch?

Booked a couple of nights here for a short break. We usually stay next door at its sister hotel the Victoria, but it was full. The Belmont is fresher, more contemporary and our lovely bedroom seemed to have been recently refurbished. We had a sea view room, very comfortable and a good size, 2 armchairs, usually hotels only squeeze one in. Reception staff and general manager were very friendly, welcoming and helpful, staff generally are really on the ball. My only criticisms were that we were woken both mornings by the sound of housekeeping staff chatter; also waiting staff in the lounge are quite loud - I don’t want to know about their shift rota grievances; I was recovering from migraine, so maybe it was just me, but the canned music was terrible, unless you really like Richard Clayderman playing on a loop.

We stopped off here for a quick lunch snack but were a bit disappointed. We were welcomed by the reception staff who were charming. We sat in the lounge which had a lovely view over a putting green then out to sea. The lounge was pleasantly furnished and was fairly quiet with no more than four other tables occupied. We waited to be served but no one arrived. I went to the bar and we were told by the chap behind the bar that someone would attend to us and he swiped a card on a computer screen and tapped in something. I asked if I could have the snack menu and was told the waiter would be bringing that to us. Almost 10 minutes later the same chap behind the bar brought the menu and asked if we would like to order drinks. We order two Gin & Tonics. They arrived fairly promptly and we ordered 2 sandwiches. One egg mayonnaise and cress and one Cheddar cheese with home made apple chutney. The sandwiches arrived around 25 minutes later. I noticed the cheddar cheese sandwich did not seem to have any chutney. The reply was that it was with the cheese. One of the sandwiches had fallen open and I said. "I can't see any chutney in there, can you?" "No, I can't see any either, I'll ask" Off he went and consulted another barman and was advised to speak with the chef. In the interim my wife ate her sandwich and commented that cress seemed to be lacking. A further 15 minutes elapsed when the sandwich arrived the waiter said. "Sorry he forgot to put it in". On taking a bite it became clear that the chef had also forgotten to butter the bread. By that time I'd given in. I ate what I wanted and asked for the bill. It arrived fairly promptly £24.10. We paid and left. Would we return. Absolutely, if only for the entertainment value.

My girlfriend and I joined her parents for dinner here whilst they were on a weekend break. The hotel and restaurant are very traditional and decadent. Men are requested to wear a tie and blazer whilst dining, which made for a pleasant change. We opted for the set 5 course dinner which was a great experience due to the silver service waiting staff which I have never had before. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurants makes for a special dining experience, a lady playing the piano in the corner of the room added to the evening.

A group of us booked a cream tea in August. We were clearly not expected.Eventually shown to 3 small round tables put together, not laid up in a room with the side door open and curtains flapping. 2nd rate tea arrived with chunky sandwiches, over sized slabs of coffee cake and unappealing small round dull cakelets. The scones were dry. There were 2 knives for 8 of us and we were asked if we wanted side plates (bizarre! do they think we eat with our hands off the table in a so called Luxury Hotel?) . The waitress went to get more knives on request and came back with dinner knives saying they had been busy that lunch time so she washed some up.I do not blame the waitress. I blame the Management.Clearly the waitress had never been trained in anything remotely to do with hotel work. There were various suited managers roaming around at times but without wishing to cause further embarrassment to our host I did not do what I wanted to do - get one alone in an office and tell him how to do his job.The whole epistle was of the greatest embarrassment to an elderly host with elderly guests. The only way we got through it was to treat it as a big "joke". I have no doubt our host will have written to the Manager who deserves to be dismissed for letting such untrained staff serve the general public.Go to the Riviera further along the road for a proper afternoon tea - we only chose the Belmont for a change and will never darken its doors again. The most cringe worthy experience I have ever had.

Absolutely superb. The fact that so many apparent locals choose to eat there Sunday lunchtime is testament to it's quality.

We were taken there to lunch as a family gathering. The service could not be faulted and a table provided in the back area away from most other guests. There were lovely flower decorations throughout. The food was good and being a Sunday centred around a car very although a fish option was available. The food was served at the table and was typical of a good class large hotel. There was ample meats and a large selection of vegetables. At £25 per head for a 5 course lunch the price was not unreasonable in such an establishment.

Last Friday morning (August 28th), my wife and I collected copies of the dinner menu that were available from several top hotels along Sidmouth seafront. The Belmont had the best, so we chose to dine there. Having recently retired after 20 years as a restaurant manager, I consider that I have enough experience to offer an honest and objective opinion of our dining experience. The service was good; warm, professional and friendly from receptionists to restaurant manager. There was a wonderful choice of dishes and the quality was somewhere between superb and outstanding. The Belmont obviously has an excellent team of chefs and the wine list was also very good. The restaurant was very busy with a great buzz. We were looked after by a young waitress from Slovakia. She was extremely professional, charming, and attentive and I feel sure she has the potential to do well within the hospitality trade. My wife and I were therefore able to have a very relaxed and enjoyable dinner. One small point concerning the female member of staff who took our drink’s order on arrival and served them; she was slightly surly and obviously had no interest in her job or her customers. Her mood was much the same at coffee time. Perhaps she would be more suited to working in a pub; not that I’m not suggesting all pub staff are like her. However, this did not detract from my wife and I having a very pleasant evening at The Belmont and it certainly won’t put us off from returning.

We sat in the garden Sunday lunch, having had the hotel recommended by our guesthouse owner. Was told find a table and someone would come and take order. Waited sometime no one came as we had put two hours on the car park fee conscience of the time (not realising hotel had car park) I decided to go and find a waiter. A smart foreign gentleman came took our order. I asked for water, a large glass of wine. My husband had low alcohol beer a s driving a roast dinner which should have been under ten pounds. He was charged over twelve pound. I had a salad with ham barely any cheese not fitting description on menu. Waiter (same person) brought med wine and said would bring another to make up size this never arrived nor water. I refused to get up again it was meant to be a relaxing Sunday meal but found the service and meal unacceptable especially when I was charged over six pounds for a med glass of wine no wine menu given to check price very disappointed definately will not be going again and definately not recommend

Between our group we sampled a good number of the dishes on the menu all of which were large portions, very tasty and good value for money. I can recommend the Lemon chicken and the Roast dinners ( best roast spuds i've had in a hotel. ) Be warned though the Thai curry had a bit!!! of heat, my brother in law enjoyed it though.

Dinner is a real pleasant experience. Men wearing jackets and ties for a start and silver service a real rarity these days. The food was excellent - one of the best steaks I've had other than from our local butcher and the roast duck was to die for. In addition, they still have a small savoury course between the soup and main course and if you can manage it a cheese course after the sweet. Talking of sweets they are all 'home made' and obviously calorie free!

Arrived at 12.30 to an empty dining room wondering if lunch was being served. We were soon put at ease by a very friendly South African. A seat found and menus supplied followed by drinks, while we studied the available dishes. Plenty of choice and our choice, although a bit slow arriving, was well cooked and enjoyable with far too many vegetables for our appetites. Liver for my wife, fish for me both cooked very well and served by the SA with a friendly smile. Slightly expensive but a a fixed price for two courses which is in keeping with these surroundings. Just one gripe- coffee is said to be included but instead of two coffees, we wanted just 1 espresso for me which cost an extra £2.50. Is espresso not coffee?

We went here for a family dinner with a party of 6. We were seated too close to the piano which was being played by someone who looked extremely bored and had a limited repertoire. The service was claustrophobic with multiple waiters serving at one time interrupting conversation. The entrees were served by a Spanish waiter with appalling bad body odour who insisted on interrupting conversation with one of his own as he served us. The main meal service saw three staff serving us our meals starting with an empty plate and serving each element individually which took forever and became very intrusive. After all of the pomp and circumstance the food was average. We wouldn't go back.
