Excellent pub with very friendly staff and customers. We were visiting the area for the weekend and everyone made us feel very welcome. A rugby orientated pub but they did let us watch the football in one of the bars. We were also invited to join in a game of Aunt Sally, which was totally new to me. I was a bit worried due to the fact that I had consumed a few pints of the excellent Old Hooky. Luckily no one was injured. I would heartily recommend this pub.

We chose the pub for a weekend stay because of its location. Right in the heart of the lovely village, it is popular with locals and rightly so. With good beer, tasty food and comfortable surroundings, it is a pleasant place to stop. We chose the larger room with double bed which is at the rear of the building. This was very peaceful and quiet once the beer garden was empty and I loved the large en-suite shower room. Our full English breakfast in the lovely dining area was promptly served and beautifully cooked with quality local sausages (so nice we tracked them down and bought some to bring home).

Set in the heart of an attractive village, this is a friendly, characterful pub with several rooms and real log fires and, yes, dogs are very welcome here too. Adderbury is famous for morris dancing with several sides who use this pub as their main base. The pub also hosts folk singing most Monday evenings. Part of the Hook Norton estate, the full range of their excellent ales are available, including the mild, which is becoming increasingly rare. This venue is first and foremost a pub, food being secondary here, with a simple menu featuring pub classics like Fish & chips, Sausage & mash, Burgers and such like, all priced around £10. You won't find anything very ambitious on the menu, but what they do, they do well.

The Morris performing outside The Bell on Boxing Day is one of Adderbury's most cherished traditions, and means that the pub is always agreeably lively on that day. Try and get yourself a pew, near the fire and a pint of Old Hooky or the seasonal 12 Days, all the better to enjoy a folksy jam session with Morris musicians and other performers, a constantly-changing cast of participants, and the sweetly expert tunings of Adderbury's own ever-modest musical celebrity. A lovely end-piece to Christmas - cosy and comforting.

If you had to imagine everything that a Traditional English pub could be, it could hardly be better than the Bell at Adderbury. An ancient Ironstone building with wood panelling, a glowing bar, a real fire when it's cold out, a picturesque beer garden and the finest kept ales known to mankind from the superb Hook Norton. Also, Chris and Sandra are very friendly and the pub is dog friendly. Their breakfasts are also great and it's a centre for traditional music. There's a walk nearby, along the beautiful church with ancient musicians carved into Ironstone, then a stream with trout at the bottom.

I was actually staying nearby, took a walk around the village and this place drew me like a magnet. A version of the locals' pub in my village (Norton St Philip) as opposed to the tourists' one. It's comfy, with the right sort of furniture, stuff to read and a welcome from the bar. Friends clearly go there for a natter and a pint; the beer is great, and the food does the job. I asked for egg and chips, not on the menu, and got it, with peas thrown in. Eggs were appropriately wobbly, the chips just so - and hot. I'll stay here next time I'm in the area.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

What do you look for in a pub? If it's loud music, pool tables or electronic gaming machines this is definitely not for you. What about the food? Looking for gourmet meals with 'jus' ? again try elsewhere . I like a pub where you are just as likely to hear folk music as any other type (on our visit we heard all sorts from folk to hard rock but it was never imposing ). I mentioned the food, obviously here it comes second to the wet bar sales but that doesn't mean that it's of an inferior quality. No, the menu isn't 4 pages long, the whole thing fits on one side of A4 paper, but it is varied and covers a wide range of tastes. The other thing about the menu is, at the time of writing, nothing is more than a tenner. This does mean, of course, that certain more expensive meats, for example steak, and fancy items are absent. Having said that, the food is excellent quality, not mass produced and locally sourced whenever possible. The mains are large enough to satisfy the average appetite but, should you prefer larger portions there are extras, starters and sweets available (you still get change from £20 if you go for 3 standard courses ) all of which are of a high standard. Enough said about the food. What about the accommodation? 2 guest rooms, 1 twin (en suite i believe )and 1 family room that is definitely en suite (1 double bed, 1 single and a further fold down single ) for 2 guests in the family room it comes in at £85 per night which includes breakfast and the usual basic provisions (tea/coffee, tv, etc. ) As I have mentioned, here it's all about the wet sales, predominantly the range of cask ales 8 handpumps all in use 5 dispensing the Hook Norton range from light to dark 1 guest ale and 2 real ciders. Not into cask? There is plenty of other choice and all kept extremely well as the award certificates that festoon the walls can testify. CAMRA pub of the year runners up for 2 years running and shortlisted for this year, just awaiting the imminent decision as I write, and all achieved in the approximately 3 years since taking on the pub (their 1st I believe ). Quite an achievement there for Chris and Sandra the excellent hosts for whom nothing seemed to be too much trouble. What's the pub like? The Bell dates back to the 1700's and, kind of, gives the impression that very little has changed , with its low doorways (i'm only 5'8 and I had to duck through one of them ), open fires, obvious associations with the local morris dance sides and folk nights. Conversation is paramount and with the friendly, welcoming staff and regulars even as newcomers we didn't feel left out. So, who is welcome? That's easy, just about everyone, walkers, cyclists, children, dogs even the aforementioned folk singers and morris dancers! So, basically any honest friendly people who just want a bit of peace in their lives.

We were unlucky as the pub had just had a change of owners who had just moved in that day. Pity we weren't notified.
However the waiting times between arriving - orders taken, starter cleared - mains arrival was just too long. The dining room is very small, three four seater and one two seater tables from memory, and situated at one end of the building. Added to the waiting times it felt as if you were somewhat forgotten. I've no doubt that the recent takeover contributed to this but it didn't make for a very enjoyable visit.
The menu compared to what was shown on the website was limited again probably due to the circumstances. I had the rib eye steak which was cooked perfectly but the accompanying chips, tomato, peas and mushrooms was a throwback to the Berni Inns of the seventies. Not much imagination used I'm sorry to say.
I don't like to write negative reviews but I'd recommend anybody thinking of going to ensure that things have settled down and the new owners have well and truly established themselves.

Handy location for Oxford, staff friendly, however my room was dire, damp, mould, strong odour dirty bed linen and tepid hot water. The staff said they have just taken it over, but they should not have been letting the room they gave me, it was not fit for habitation. They couldn't offer me another room as they were fully booked, I hope the other guests had better rooms. I did strongly consider sleeping in my car instead, stuck it out though, got up very early and now recovering in Nero's with a strong coffee.

I was looking for somewhere to have Sunday lunch and the pub is on my way home. The pub was clean, warm and welcoming. The staff were very friendly and looked after us vey well. The food was excellent value for money and of a very high standard, we all enjoyed our mains and a couple of us even forced down a pudding. I will definitely be going back.

Dreadful state. Would have left if there was anywhere else to go.
