Visited for lunch today; took a chance and didn’t book. A fairly quiet, tidy and elegant restaurant awaited, neutral tones with a splash of colour made for a pleasant and peaceful visit. Whilst the menu may be limited for some it should mean that what is offered is seasonal and fresh. I certainly couldn’t fault my meal, although perhaps lose the Yorkshire pudding. Really great flavours, a substantial portion size served with polite humour. Will definitely return.

Sadly, not a great meal. Nicely served roasts, but nothing had much flavour. We keep wanting this place to be good, as it is walking distance from home, but we never have two good meals in a row.

Came here because we have had many a good meal at West Lodge Park Hotel in Enfield. Was delighted to see Matthew who we knew from Enfield. Beales have done an impressive job with the Bell. We stayed for a delicious meal but had a look at the rooms and they look excellent. There's an intimate feel to the place and atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were very attentive, and the new autumn menu looked very nice. We had the pork chop with extra sides of vegetables. Faultless. Thanks Laura who served us. If you're in the area I would hardly recommend this place.

We had a delicious evening meal cooked to perfection. Such a lovely treat. I had the sea bass and my partner ordered a very tasty chicken dish. The deserts were really nice too. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. We will definately be coming back. Thank you. We even had a great recommendation to go to the local music festival in Saxmundham on the same evening. Thoroughly enjoyed!

I was so impressed by this hotel. We received a warm welcome from manager Matthew and were shown to our gorgeous 'classic' room on the first floor. The room was spacious and very tastefully decorated. It was truly one of the nicest country hotel rooms i have stayed in. The bathroom was large, with a walk in shower, lovely toiletries and fluffy towels. The room was well equipped with a safe, coffee maker and kettle, air cooling unit and large TV. We very much enjoyed our breakfast which had plenty of hot and cold options. The common spaces were also beautifully decorated, and all the staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. Aldeburgh is only a 15-20 minute drive away and there are also country walks nearby. A great choice for a couple of days away. It is worth checking their website for special deals.

We were lucky enough to get a table for the Suffolk Tasting event last night for my husbands birthday. We were seated in the Coach Room, which was beautiful! We were treated to six delicious courses and each one was deliciously perfect. The pork was an absolute stand out - so tender, we all loved the fish course and the tart as the final dish was perfect - not too sweet. We’ve all said we can’t wait to go again. If you haven’t yet been, do!! This is a real gem of a venue and celebrates all that is Suffolk. Thank you to the team who served us last night, it was incredibly busy but we were never left waiting for food or drink. Bravo! 5/5.

We have supported The Bell since it opened We had a lovely wine tasting last year where food wine and staff were excellent However on recent trips the bar area is frequented by post work men complete in their work clothes/aromas included! Last night on a warm spring evening the outside courtyard was like a construction site… Is there no dress code? if not the bar may become a workman’s pub which will be a real shame

We've dined at The Bell for both lunch and dinner, and words cannot adequately convey how truly exceptional it is. Suffolk, take pride in this gem! The food is outstanding, the service is impeccable, there's an extensive selection of wines, and the overall experience is simply remarkable. We particularly recommend their lunch offerings - with the 2 courses for £20, which, in today's landscape, provides exceptional value for such a high standard of food.

I recently visited The Bell with my wife who had visited before. The restaurant design and atmosphere is fantastic and has really made The Bell a welcoming and friendly destination. I wouldn't normally order a fish dish for a main, but I was intrigued by the Blackened Cod Loin. I have to say that this was a truly wonderful dish, full of flavours and well presented. To accompany the Cod Loin, I ordered the American Style Bakewell Cheesecake for dessert. I can't explain how good that dessert was and I never wanted it to end. This is a town centre hotel that is open all day, varying its offerings accordingly. It has a comfortable restaurant and another dining area similar to a pub lounge. Our reservation was for the restaurant, but we were put in the latter - the menu is the same, however. And that menu is essentially basic pub grub: fish and chips, pork belly, steak and a burger, with some more interesting - though very pricy - starters. We had the fish and chips and desserts. The fish (unspecified, but probably cod) was fine, nicely cooked in a light and crispy batter. But the "triple-cooked chips" were in fact thick potato wedges, and simply lumps of stodge. Another misnomer was one of the desserts - allegedly a chocolate mousse, but actually two smallish dollops of ganache accompanied by a very large scoop of ice cream, perhaps by way of compensation. The dessert menu was also very basic, and one does wonder about the inclusion of a dairy-free pannacotta - why not just make a proper one, and something different for the vegans? But this is not an ambitious kitchen. We didn't linger - that area was pretty noisy and not a great place to sit. The service wasn't particularly attentive, but it was a busy evening. Would we go back? Not unless they upgrade the menu - this was a disappointing meal out.

The Hotel is nice but basic. Staff helpful. My main concern is that they have a very poor vedgetarian selection on their menu. On the breakfast order sheet there was no vedgie option, although one was provided on request. In the restaurant there was only one option on the menu, Fallafel with whipped cheese, says we don't do vedgie options, not even a burger, really? How hard can that be? When it came to ordering, I was informed they had run out of Fallafel. Not good. Only to then be told they did have one portion left. What came was from a packet and tub with a few leaves and olives. For £11.25 it was very poor. I am assured by my meaty companions that the other meaty offerings where at best ordinary.

This place was a nice surprise! We came to Saxmundham looking for Waitrose and a sandwich and this place provided the latter and a nice pint of beer. There are cheese and pickle sandwiches and then there are other cheese and pickle sandwiches and some are pretty grim but these were fresh and tasty, served with crisps and, to be honest, one of the best salad-type side decorations for a sandwich I have ever experienced. It was fresh, green and dressed to zing. Thanks!

We stopped here for a sandwich and a drink yesterday. It was about 4pm and the bar was busy. There was fresh water and dog biscuits for our Standard Poodle. Good selection of gins at the bar and my partner said the beer was good. I’m always a bit nervous about ordering sandwiches because I am often disappointed. Not at The Bell! The bread was fresh and the sandwich fillings were generous. Each sandwich came with a well dressed side salad, a ramekin of coleslaw and some crisps. We went away very satisfied. The only slightly negative comment is that dogs are welcome in the bar but if you wanted to eat a proper meal it would be very difficult using the coffee tables, especially soup!

Had dinner that was decided on looking at the menu the night before. Arriving for dinner any of the staff can either take you to your table or go to the bar for a quick drink first. The lady that took us to our table gave us menus but no drink menu - we had to grab one from another table. The food was great, very tasty, although we kept having to try and flag someone down to re-order drinks. Paying was slow and again had to grab someone.

We arrived for mid week dinner without a reservation. Despite the dining room being completely empty the staff were not keen for the two of us to sit at a larger table(set for 4) but did agree after I said we would not be happy at a tiny table. They had a senior menu which was really excellent value for money and which my husband enjoyed. My crab linguine was really spicy which I liked but others would undoubtedly find too hot. The service was quite efficient and friendly. We first ate here when we moved to Saxmundham 2 years ago and I had the chicken. We come here for a handleful of occasions since then, the last time being this weekend and the menu was exactly the same. Stayed here for 2 night break with a buyagift voucher. It wasnt too bad considering what we paid for it, but if I,d paid full price not so sure I,d be happy. We stayed in room 5 which is above the entrance door. Later on in the evening, if you have the window open you get noise from people downstairs and from people on the high street. The bed seemed tiny, I,m not sure if its a small double or 4ft 6 bed. There is a cane chair in the bedroom area that is not fit for purpose and would fall apart if someone sat in it. The bathroom was large but has scruffy bits in it and has an extractor fan that stays on all the time. There isn,t a lot to do in Saxmundham but is near to Southwold and other nice places to visit. We decided not to eat in the restaurant during our stay, but did get a drink in the bar. Parking in the public car park near the hotel was fine.

I parked on the Friday at a cost of £2.30 for 24 hours. I had to get up early on the Saturday, because they run 0800 to 1800 hours, but when I put the £2.30 in the machine it lasted until Monday morning at 0800 hours, because Sundays were free. It was a very clean well laid our car park and I was able to re-cycle my empty wine bottles at the same time.

The young lady serving us was clearly being over run and had to rush from table to table. We had a tray of drinks spilt on to our table, had to ask staff for some attention (numerous times) after waiting far too long for our plates to be cleared, then waited along time for desserts to be ordered and served, one dessert was incorrect and one dessert contained a small piece of plastic!!

Chips were over cooked and hard. The fish had bones in that I nearly choked on. You need to warn people that the fish may contain bones. My wife's dessert was described as "apple and rhubarb crumble" but there was no crumble on the top! It had a few almonds sprinkled on the top of the over-stewed fruit which didn't go well with the mushy fruit. Not good at all. When my husband mentioned it to the girl serving he was told that they don't put "real" crumble on the top because it wouldn't make it Gluten free! If that's the case then don't call it a crumble!

I purchased a two night stay deal with Buyagift as a treat for my wife. When booking I was sent a confirmation which stated that the two days included breakfast but on arrival we was advised that this was a mistake and should never have been put on the confirmation letter. We was shown to our room and the chef very kindly offered to take our bags up to our room on the first floor. We then decided to have some lunch and ordered tapas, guided through the dishes by the waitress who was very helpful, and this was delicious. The twin room we had was very spacious, and the beds very comfortable, and I think the whole hotel had been recently decorated so it was very clean. I also purchased a deal via Groupon for evening meal on the Saturday which was also good value and again the meal was delicious and well cooked. My only complaint was the size of the bar which is very small and I had to sit in the hall area as their were only a few seats in the bar which were taken. The next morning we decided to try the breakfast which proved to be quite expensive especially as we were given menus with no prices on so it was a bit of a shock to be charged £16 for one breakfast plus a coffee and tea and two fruit juices. When I later queried this the lady said it was right as they charge for items separately but added she did not normally do breakfasts so would check later. We went out for the day and as it was the last evening we decided to have an evening meal in the hotel again which we enjoyed. On leaving I thought I would just mention to the receptionist about the cost of the breakfast and after a discussion with the lady who had charged me in the morning who kept saying she had charged me correctly, decided to give me a £3.85 refund. To conclude this is a lovely clean hotel with very friendly and helpful staff but we felt that they had so many offers with different companies that the staff get confused with the different offers so make mistakes. I also felt that the breakfast menu needs to be simplified as to charge individually for items can be very expensive and will put customers off going again. We visited the coffee shop opposite, who do excellent breakfasts, on our last morning. We would go again but only for a short break as there is not much to see or do in the towm

What on earth is going on here?. I am extremely concerned about the way this establishment I entered the bar at 6pm, expecting to relax with a drink whilst waiting for my husband to collect me, after Christmas shopping. The bar was deserted, and I waited for a member of staff to appear. I stood at the bar for about 10 mins, no sign of bar staff, I sat down, another 10 mins went by. A man from the restaurant came through with two empty pint glasses, waiting to be served, he waited for 5 mins, no one came, and he left. I ventured out to the reception desk, where two female staff were working in the back office, but did not notice me. I went back to the bar. I heard voices say, "I think there is someone in the bar", no one came through. Then, eventually, a two women came in, moaned about something to do with after work drinks, one left, whilst the other got herself a drink, and then sat at the bar. No one even asked me if I wanted anything.

6 of us dined on Saturday evening. It started off with the wine being brought to the table and not being asked if we wanted to try it! The starter was excellent but when we asked for further serviettes a pile of them were slapped down. The main course was very good and we then waited a while before being asked if we wanted dessert. We declined but the waitress then vanished and we didn’t see her again until we had to go and find her to ask for the bill as our taxi was due to arrive. The small stereo was unplugged in the dining room whilst we were in the room. When we were leaving to wait for our taxi we had to go via the side door and walk round the building due to the main door being locked. No offer was made for us to stay inside and watch for the taxi on such a cold evening. A smile and some cheerfulness would have been a nice gesture.

Went to lunch with my mother , it was OK, mum really enjoyed her chicken escalope. I played safety with the beer battered cod and chips which were OK but not outstanding, the mushy peas had a strange bitter taste which spoiled it a bit, not bad enough to complain but would avoid if I went back. Staff were nice but the building is a bit tired looking.

Here we go again, we are in here at this very moment so im going to have to type quietly its funny, ive said a few times 'i wish we had a decent seafood restaurant round these parts' but ive been a chump, i generally have seafood when i visit the bell and its always fantastic, today no exception, whitebait starter for 2 (that would have fed 3 comfortably) was very tasty with a nice hint of spice, and the crab salad that wife had looked and apparently was lovely, but my roast cod Madras was flippin aaaaaamezzin so you see there is a great seafood restaurant round these parts, its called the Bell

Haven driven around for 20 minutes looking for a pub that still served food after 8pm we happened upon the bell. What a delight. friendly service and exceptional food. Had come to suffolk for the seafood and the mussels and dressed crab didn't disappoint. Keep up the good work.

We arrived in Saxmundham later than planned, leaving only half an hour for lunch before a meeting in town.

Went to eat one evening, not busy so was seated immediately, took 15 minutes to come with offers of drinks or menu and then it was only because the waitress was seating a party of four and realised we were still waiting. Staff were slow and rude the waitress was even chatting on her mobile phone whilst serving our food. The food was delicious but the poor inadequate service means I wouldn't eat there again.

I had received a Groupon voucher for a 2 night B&B; stay here with dinner on the first night as a gift- only realised the expiry date was approaching with a few days to go and panicked as I didn't want it going to waste. Contacted The Bell and Samantha very kindly agreed to extend it for us for a date that suited.

Great deal for a Thursday night. The steak was amazing, with all the trimmings. Well worth another visit.

It was Friday 13th January, severe flood warnings were in place across the region, we had been advised to evacuate our holiday cottage in Aldeburgh and moved up to Snape for the night.

We arrived towards the end of the lunch service and our feeling was that everyone had switched off. We were given the lunch menu and we're making our choices when somebody came and took it away, giving us a snacks menu instead! We decided to stay and ordered one mussels and one burger. Both dishes were good. A nearby table were clearly in dispute with a manager...it was resolved but rather publicly.

We booked 3 nights between Xmas and new year for a quiet get away which it was. Room was adequate and brood value for the money. It was clean and spacious. Only slight minor point of the room was that it was right over the smoking area for the bar and the windows are not sound proof. It's amazing what you can learn about some of the visitors lol!!! Seriously it was a lovely hotel, the food was in our mind of very high quality, again the chef knew how to cook his steaks and also they melted like butter in the mouth. The staff were very friendly and helpful , overall a lovely place to stay thank you

We took advantage of a Christmas deal to come back to the Bell for a couple of days after the mad rush and to celebrate husbands birthday on 2nd January. When we arrived the staff were working seamlessly to accommodate a group of 20 for lunch and other guests already seated. Our waitress said we might have a delay before our food arrived but all credit to the kitchen staff because our food arrived in good time and was excellent as the food always is whenever we visit here.Standards did not drop over this busy time so we were very impressed.

My nephew and his family took me and my wife for an evening meal on Monday, and I was very impressed with the quality of food and the excellent service at a very reasonable price. It's a pity we live so far away from the town as i would use it on a regular basis. Thank you for a pleasant evening.

I stayed at the hotel on Monday night and whilst the room was small and not particularly nice as well as cold but the main issue came after I left when some woman accused me of doing a runner without paying! She called me about 5 mins after I'd left and made the accusation which only after I gave her the receipt number did she accept the fact, the way she dealt with it was terrible and I will not be back.

We were staying in Saxmundham recently and had dinner at The Bell. The food was excellent as was the service. Would have payed a lot more in London for the food and wine. Highly recommended.

Great surroundings, atmosphere, service and most importantly food - would wholeheartedly recommend the whitebait starter and sea-bass main. Largish portions, only one of us managed three courses! We paid £29 a head which was decent value.

We had arranged for twenty people to dine here tonight for a 60th birthday party. It's not,the first time I have eaten here, but yet again the food, decor and service were excellent, especially as there were so many of us all eating different meals at the same time.

We were in the area visiting Yoxford Antiques Barn so decided try Saxmundham for lunch. Even though it was past 2pm we received a friendly welcome and shown to stable overlooking the main street. Quickly we were served with our drinks and looked at the menu. Two of our party went for the cod and chips, one for the gammon with fresh free range ducks eggs and the last had the home made steak burger which was the best ever tasted! We really enjoyed our meal and had to decline a sweet as we couldn't eat another morsel.Thank you Bell Hotel, wish we were closer to you but we will be back!

Pleasant atmosphere but felt cream tea was lacking attention to detail. Quantity was questionable with large cakes and had to keep asking for more tea. Perhaps management should sit down and experience service

Would highly recommend The Bell for any type of meal I have been for dinner before but today we visited for an afternoon tea. The spread that was put on was amazing, very yummy and there was certainly plenty there! Thank you to all the staff who helped with the organising and making my life easier! Thanks Philippa

I had the sea food platter and my husband had ham egg and chips. Both were very good meals at a good price. The bar offered a nice selection of local beers along with the usual larger and spirits. I thought the bar was a bit pricey but it is a hotel not a pub. Apart from that a very enjoyable meal and worth a visit

We decided to have dinner on a whim, whilst having a drink. We had not reserved a table, and even though they were busy with a full restaurant, we just had had a relaxed 30min wait before being seated. The service was extremely good, and attentive. The food was superb! Very well presented, and tasted wonderful. We had a starter and main and wine, and the bill was very reasonably priced. Totally different experience to our previous visit, and it was on a weekday. Well done to the staff. Top marks.

Wonderful experience from start to finish. Thank you very much to the staff who worked so hard and who helped with dairy and gluten free choices - So much on the menu can be adapted and nothing felt like too much trouble. The food was lovely and the service relaxed and unobtrusive. Will definitely return.

What a great old English pub, It looks like this used to be a Pubmaster pub, but is now a free house, which explains the number and variety of real ales for sale. I only went in the daytime and there was a real fire burning . It looks like this pub at night has music on, which must be a cosy environment for the locals. When I visit Woodbridge again I must return here.
