CUSTOMERS TALK ABOUT DISHES WITH..smokedcheesebaconcheeseshamcoffeesandwichpay

comment_iconOpinions

Met the owner at a Spanish food event about 20 years ago and bought oil and vinegars. Tootling away in the campervan one day we both wondered where we knew Peasenhall from. We then both yelled "EMMETTS" and stopped for supplies. The strawberry tree honey is still talked about. Now we stop whenever in the area. The date and lime chutney is wildly addictive and pairs with cheese and of course the wonderful beech smoked ham. The black bacon and ham is unique and had a taste of its own. Try getting the black streaky and wrapping around dried apricots or prunes (soak in tea and brandy with star anise and chilli) and fried or roasted for a winter treat. The oak honey is rich and a small amount added to yoghurt and granola adds a subtle complex sweetness. It's off the beaten track, but you will beat a path to it's door once you sample the produce.

It is almost impossible to find a good selection of crystallised fruits in the shops and on the internet …. but fortunately I found that Emmetts sold a 400gm box and were able to post it at very short notice and in time for Christmas!! Looking further at their web site there are so many other delicious and interesting items that are available for posting …. very tempting! ….. if only they were closer to home!

I had been looking forward to visiting the shop and cafe on our holiday. When we went in for breakfast so that we could sample what they had, when we were told that they do not have a cafe. But they can make us a drink and a sandwich which we declined as we wanted to sit down properly and enjoy a good meal. This is false advertising and should be addressed, we were disappointed and decided not to go back.

We were a party of 10 including young children. The owner made us a wonderful lunch of sandwiches with Emmett's ham/chutney etc which we ate in the garden. He could not have been more welcoming, and especially to the young children - impressive at any time but on the day he was single handed and running the store as well.

The cafe is closed (I last visited just pre Christmas 2021). The produce is excellent. Some unusual produce, including the black ham, which has a distinctly sharp flavour (possibly from long smoking). Earl grey ham had no discernible tea notes but was very tasty ham. Outstanding cornichons. Good salami/cure meats. Seems to stock the world’s biggest collection of glacee fruit. Prices are very high. I like to patronise this shop as it’s local and independent. But so is Fortnum & Mason’s. The prices are comparable.

Because of where we live we rarely pass before 11.30 which is far too late for breakfast so this is a reviesw of the shop, and our experience has been a bit mixed. Cheeses in the main are excellent though the Stilton needs eating as soon as it is opened as I have found that if kept open for too long it develops a rather pungent taste. The olives are standard olives and no better than Rolfes of Walsham which are half the price. Joints of gammon are good on the whole, as is the sliced ham though we were recently amused to see that our pack of spiced Christmas cure had a best before date of 7th November. At the risk of being heretical I add just a touch of oil to the pan for the black smoked bacon as otherwise i find that by the time it is cooked it is too dry. So, good quality, for which you do pay a premium, and with one or two personal glitches. but we still call in when ever we pass to see what new things are in. P.S. The Rioja is excellent!!

Popped in for a coffee on the way home. The waitress inside, instead of saying hello, immediately demanded that we put on masks, in the entirely empty shop, also vaccinated. We had coffee and a hot chocolate in the garden. £3.40 for a Galaxy instant hot chocolate! that hadn't even been mixed and far too much for the worst instant coffee I've had from what is usually quite a nice deli, we were very disappointed. Rude service and abysmal drinks. Tapenade is very good however. I hope they try harder and it improves when they reopen the cafe. Peace and love.

Popped in here whilst travelling along the A1120 to get some snacks. On opening the door the staff shouted at me to wear a mask. I chucked all of mine in the bin when the mask mandate ended over a month ago, apparently Emmett’s hasn’t got the memo. They tried to sell me one for 50p. I took my custom a few hundred yards down the road to the general store where a friendlier greeting said “face coverings or not, your choice.”

It's not overly obvious that they have a garden at the back where you can have a tea or coffee and a cake. But they sell their own Earl Grey tea which again is expensive but wanting to give them some custom I thought I would have a drink in the garden to try it out, and they just served up Twinnings.

Its worth paying a little more for Bacon that does not contain nitrates and is far more interesting than the average supermarket smoked/unsmoked. I made the mistake of grilling it. Dry fry it as per the advice from the shop and it is a treat. I also bought some spanish cured meats. Again much better that the supermarket in that the tastes are more distinct and they taste like they should rather than just another bit of cured ham. The manchego with rosemary and honey was a treat. We had a superb Spanish holiday "in the back garden" this weekend thanks to emmetts.

We met friends at 10:30, very civilised, to sample the all day breakfast offer at £2:20. It was the MOST delicious surprise. You get a mug of tea, and a plate with a slice of toast - topped with the most succulent ham, an egg and 3 large slices of incredibly tasty bacon, accompanied by the in-house brown sauce. My intial thought was, ‘I will never eat all that meat’ - I did! Ok, so you would not want to eat it every day but the offer ends at the end of March. Four and a half stars for the produce, irritatingly I keep going back because they are unique and it’s almost impossible to find many of the items they stock and their quality anywhere else. However 1 star for the outrageous mark ups. Recently they were selling Fenn Farm butter at a higher cost than the farm itself (it’s down the road!) a cheese affineur (in Scotland!) sell it at 20%.less and I doubt rates are higher in Peasenhall than Edinburgh! I suspect the owner thinks long and hard about his mark ups. Perhaps his shop target audience are young affluent Londoners who use Borough market and have a holiday home in Southwold. Given that ,he’s missing a trick, source fruit and veg locally ,concentrating on upmarket heritage varieties...it would help the image!.......Black ham wonderful , should have worldwide status but simply, in my opinion they’re having a laugh with prices , they’re overheads are not Fortnum’s although I think Mr Thomas worked for them, so habits die hard!

We had a wonderful black bacon toasted sandwich on homemade brown bread, with melted cheese ( Brie I think) and a spicy chutney on the side. It was the best bacon I had ever had. I have since ordered some on a few occasions to be delivered for Christmas and it freezes well. I have also had their Chorizo which is lovely, too and a high quality product.I will be placing another order this year, though it is a good idea to share an order with someone as their delivery charges are expensive.

I have mixed feelings about this place for various reasons. The tasters put out for customers to try were delicious, especially the fried, salted or herb covered almonds, which were amazing. We bought a mixture of cheeses, almonds, snacks etc as a gift for some friends, but the cost of the items sold here are very high, even for the quality, which I would expect to pay extra for. The produce was virtually all wrapped in single use plastic, a shame for this interesting individual shop. Many places now manage to use more sustainable packaging and I’m sure historically this shop would not have used plastic. The person serving said that for health and safety reasons they had to use plastic, but there are alternatives out there.Amazingly they offered a breakfast for £2.99 ( for a limited few weeks in the year) which we had. It was good value, but I thought the ham and bacon that they are supposed to be famous for, smoking them themselves, would have been more tasty, they did not have any flavour. The bacon was mostly fat, with a tough rind and not at all crispy. The egg was good, but the bread would have been nicer if it had been more than what looked and tasted like a slice of whole meal from a packet. The price included tea, but as I had coffee I had to pay extra, although the coffee was good. So I would recommend this shop for special gifts and treats, but you should be prepared for the cost. I love the idea of such a shop, but would like to see fair prices and no plastic.

If you want smashed avocado on sourdough with pea shoots and other unnecessary greenery then this cafe is not for you. But if you want the best quality full English, fresh unfussy honestly presented British and local food then you’re in the right place. Always a warm welcome, seriously tasty local food, simply cooked and unpretentiously presented. Today’s special were some seriously big juicy scallops which I had with my full English and they were an inspired combination and very popular. Thanks Sean for another outstanding breakfast. Keeping consistent standards like this is a real labour of love but it shines through in the food. Lovely breakfast and not an avocado in sight. PS a ‘greasy spoon’ this is not!

We decided to pop in for a drink ,my partner went to the bar and I went to the toilet ,10 mins later my partner still at the bar not been acknowledged woman sat behind the bar not looking at him and what looked like the manager talking to some people ,fair enough if you can't serve say so or if your talking just say you will be a minute. They were so rude and ignorant maybe if we had been stuck up people he may have looked at us ,but we are just normal. One to avoid

Authentic Pie, Mash n' liquor in Felixstowe - I popped in here after a couple of beers on the front - lovely pies, good old mash and proper liquor - knife, fork and spoon for the liquor, with vinegar, just like in London SE1 - interesting photos of England football stars and a bit of banter with the owner. All in all a great lunch and long may they thrive in Felixstowe.

The best sourdough bread we've tasted, ever! Chewy, crispy, delicious! This quality will be hard to beat. It's definitely worth a visit here if you're in the vicinity and we'll definitely be back, next time we're in - or near - lovely 'Fram'.
