The Bell and Crown in Wiltshire

We chose the Bell & Crown, Zeals as it was a great location, easy to find on the A303 and close to Sherborne. The reviews were good and we weren't disappointed. Really enjoyed our evening meal, comfortable overnight stay and delicious breakfast. We loved the relaxing pub atmosphere and had a delightful glass of cold Picpoul, a well cooked traditional evening meal and a quiet comfortable night sleep - the room was great and the power shower refreshing! The staff were helpful and kind, and we thought it was good value. I thoroughly recommend it.

I stayed here as a half way point travelling from Kent back to Cornwall. Its a great location, just off A303 and very close to Stourhead which is well worth a visit. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The room was superb. I loved the way the traditional old has been combined with modern and up to date. I had a great night's sleep and a very tasty breakfast. I'll definitely stay here again.

We booked a DB&B deal. Great value for a great stay with great food. My pork chop with bitterness area was lovely. Breakfast started with a grandstand ginger shot to wake us up ! The staff both evening and morning were friendly and he!pful. It got busy but they coped well and made everyone feel welcome. Lovely location with views over the fields . We shall be returning asap !

This was a stop off en route to our holiday and we had been driving for a few hours. The staff were so lovely and accommodating for the two of us and our two year old. The food was absolutely incredible and it was such a lovely stop for us. If ever we are in the area again we will definitely be visiting again. Thank you!

These people really know hospitality. Our room was charming, cozy, clean, well-appointed, and a massively pleasant surprise after various and sundry accommodations throughout Ireland, Scotland, and England. In four weeks of travel, our one night at Bell and Crown was absolutely the most comfortable and quite luxurious. What a surprise to find an American style mattress and good pillows, high quality bed linens, wonderful bathing products, bottled water (in glass bottles!), good tea with fresh milk (instead of that horrible stuff in sealed plastic) good, real coffee and French press. We had the Sunday Roast for dinner and it was easily the best meal we’ve had since leaving Santa Barbara on June 7th. I guess the best compliment is to admit that we didn't want to leave. These two road-weary travelers were made to feel so comfortable and welcomed.

Really enjoyed our three night stay. Requested a move from room 2 as the pub music was annoying but room 5 on the second floor was lovely and quiet. Rooms are not massive but very well appointed and the bed very comfy. Dinners and breakfasts were excellent and the service was always very attentive. Good location to visit Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset. Other local pubs not brilliant but would recommend The Walnut Tree in Mere. Thanks for a lovely stay.

We were on stop over for the second time. It is such a restful place even on a busy week-end evening. It will certainly become known to the A303 commuters. Good greeting, good bar,good food and exceptionally comfortable rooms. Check out the external staircase, may be a problem for some very old travellers.

We only ate so can’t comment on overnight stays, which sound better. Lunch was huge disappointment. Menu basic and very over priced. Staff were lovely but didn’t make up for the bill or for the very uncomfortable seats which were so crammed in a corner we had to move whole table to get in- despite the pub being almost empty.

This is an amazing pub with super staff that give wonderful service. Best cheeseburger and chips I’ve had in the UK. Last year I had there liver, mash and onions also amazing. The quality of food has not dropped. Well done to all the management and staff for keeping the same level of service. We did not have a booking but somehow managed to fit us in

Earlier this month we enjoyed a two night dinner, bed and breakfast deal at The Bell & Crown while visiting Stourhead and Lytes Cary Manor (Both National Trust Properties). The accommodation was excellent as was dinner and breakfast on both days. Callum, Poppy and the other staff members were welcoming and very attentive throughout the weekend. We have no hestation in recommending a stop over at The Bell & Crown and look forward to a retutn visit.

We stayed for 2 nights and we could not fault it at all. The room was lovely and cosy and fit perfectly with the countryside environment. All amenities were provided and it was so clean. We also ate here for dinner and breakfast and again could not fault the food. The double cheeseburger was probably the best burger I’ve ever had and the chicken burger was amazing too. We also had the 10oz steak which was so tender. Staff were helpful and friendly and service was impeccable. The area lacks phone signal but WiFi is provided for free.

This B&B is great for short stay. We stayed there for 2 nights with my husband and son. Can’t praise enough the kindness and friendliness of the staff. They were very accommodating and even packed up breakfast for my son who didnt want to get out of the bed. The room was very pretty and cosy. They had quite a lot of entertaining channels like Prime video, BBC iPlayer, Rakuten tv etc. to keep the kids busy. The bathroom was very nice and clean and the toiletries provided in the bathroom was top notch. The only thing I would like to mention, was missing, is a wardrobe or even a chest of drawers to unpack clothes. There were just some hangers. Other than that we had a lovely and pleasant stay .

Stayed with my wife and adult son with his girlfriend. We spent the day in bath and this was an easy trip south, well placed for the next day touring Somerset. Both rooms excellent, with brilliant showers and great facilities. We ate dinner in house, great food and well priced.Local beers very good. Breakfast was flexible full English and suited all of us. Fully recommend to anyone

Stayed two nights, and had breakfast and dinner both days. Friendly helpful staff, very comfortable bed and great shower.. and you get fresh milk in your room. Fish and chips are stunning, they need to be tried. Breakfast was perfect, good choice, relaxed atmosphere served with a smile .. 5 stars all the way

A fantastic pub. Brilliant ambiance, friendly and helpful staff. Food was exceptional- scotch eggs being a firm family favourite and a definite must and the breakfast delicious. Open fires and wooden floors… we stayed the night and the rooms were very comfortable, clean with lovely products. Could not recommend more highly. We booked this accommodation last minute for a business trip and were not disappointed. It was amazing. Our room and breakfast were second to none. Very clean room and breakfast was brilliant. We had dinner on the evening that we arrived too and the food was delicious, cannot fault it at all. Staff were really friendly and accommodating. My husband is coeliac and needs gluten free and we were pleasantly surprised that literally the whole menu was gluten free! Never had so many options elsewhere! We will definitely be going back soon 😍

The B&C goes from strength to strength and we had another delicious meal there last week. I had the calves liver and my husband had the pork ribeye and both were beautifully cooked succulent and delicious. My only complaint would be that my meal could have been a bit hotter, it was warm when I started to eat but swiftly became cold before I had finished. Other than that scrummy.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the B@C in Zeals.The room represented the ultimate in luxury in every respect.We enjoyed Breakfast and Dinner all of which were imaginative,the highest quality and of the highest standard.The staff representing a few different shifts were amazing.The overall standard of everything experienced was of the very highest standard.

Fabulous walk from Mere followed by a wonderful Sunday roast lunch and a pint of Rude Giant - what more could you want on a Sunday!

This wonderful hostelry served up a Sunday Roast that was absolutely superb. I had the Beef, my wife, the Lamb. The service was delightful and friendly, and the food oh, dear reader, the food was just fantastic. Huge Yorkshire puddings that were a delight and complemented the roast potatoes that themselves nestled amid locally grown vegetables. All under a rich gravy that complimented the generous cuts of meat. In a world of turmoil and conflict the solid comfort of a traditional Sunday Roast is a gift indeed. The good folk of the Bell and Crown have with their skills and efforts, made that boozer a little bit of heaven. Bless em all!

I have been to the Bell & Crown probably 5/6 times since the new owners took it over. This experience was one that would make me more likely to choose other local pubs for my next visit. Pro’s - delicious food, good portion size, very friendly and polite service Con’s - still just too overpriced (£23 for a plated Sunday roast) and the main issue this time was that a member of staff had put a huge, damp log on the open fire that was seriously smoking out the whole place. I approached the management mid-meal to ask what the issue was. They said they were aware and were trying to sort it by adding more, drier logs. Fortunately we were at the furthest end of the restaurant but even then it was becoming unbearable by the end of the meal. Windows were all painted shut so couldn’t be opened for fresh air and we left without having desert or coffee as we couldn’t stay in the building any longer. Not ideal bearing in mind there was a pregnant woman and 2 young babies in our party. I left by the end feeling as though I had spent the afternoon in a coal mine or smoked a whole pack of cigarettes. We had to go for a brisk walk to clear the lungs and also put all our clothes in the wash as soon as we got home to wash out the smoke smell. Sorry, but there are better (and more reasonably priced) pubs in the area.

We chose the Bell and Crown for an overnight stay based on earlier reviews. We were not disappointed. The young receptionist who showed us our room, the lady who took our dinner order and the young waitress; all could not have been nicer or more helpful. The bar area was full of character with two open fires. The food was superb. No wonder the Inn was so well patronised. Our bedroom was both warm and comfortable.

Nice comfortable country pub. Would prefer if the staff were dressed for work rather than hanging around with mates - appeared quite scruffy which gives the impression that they aren't bothered. Not sure why I wasn't allowed a large glass of wine when the menu gives prices for 2 different sizes and a price for a bottle? - told they will only serve 'medium' glasses of wine? Waiter let his finger into the oil and pomegranite dip, and the waiter that served dessert had dirty finger nails - all details that are important when serving food. I do not like the addition of a 12.5% service charge as people feel 'obliged' to pay it., and then makes a reasonable set lunch menu - not so reasonable. Food okay but nothing special - won't rush back i'm afraid.

Just had our second stay at the recently updated pub with lovely rooms on our way back from a NYE party in the west country. Arriving on New Year's Day in the afternoon it was good to see so many people enjoying their late lunches. The staff were very friendly and professional, both our dinner and breakfast were excellent. Will definitely stop here again - as it's also near to Stourhead which is one of our favourite NT places to visit.

Stayed here overnight for dinner on my wife’s birthday. Easy parking and a friendly greeting at reception. Lovely warm comfortable room with a huge en-suite which had been refurbished recently. Olde world bar with beams and log fire but still bright and modern. Excellent food and drinks served by the helpful, friendly, professional staff. Will definitely return.

Dinner bed and breakfast stay, en-route from Minehead to Tunbridge Wells. Beautiful accommodation, decor, comfort, and a few added luxuries. Fabulous evening meal and breakfast. The most friendly, attentive welcoming staff. If you need a stop when travelling down the A303 definitely stay/eat here!

A group of 8 friends stayed at this wonderful pub with rooms after a day at Wincanton races. We all said it was the best pub we’ve ever stayed in. The staff were welcoming, the evening meal and breakfast was gorgeous and the rooms are so tastefully decorated. We will certainly return if and when we’re down these parts again and thoroughly recommend the pub for its food and wonderful hospitality.

We had a one night stay in this lovely pub with rooms as it was a perfect midpoint for a meet up with our friends from Devon. The moment we arrived we felt the lovely warm atmosphere of the pub which was busy and buzzy even on a Tuesday afternoon and early evening. The pub hasn’t been turned into a typical formulaic Gastropub but instead they’ve kept all the lovely old beams and floor boards and made a feature of them. The rooms are all upstairs and ours was absolutely lovely. The furniture was lovely with quality fabrics for cushions and blinds and pretty wall lights. The shower room was quite specious and had luxurious underfloor heating which was very welcome on a cold November night! The walk in shower was really powerful! The heating in the room was easy to adjust and it was simple to keep it to an ambient temperature. Comfortable king size bed with great pillows (for once) and quality bed linen meant we had a good night’s sleep. The food in the restaurant was delicious- I had a burger without a bun, fries and homemade coleslaw, and it was too much for me to finish. Our friends had a cider risotto (delicious) and rose veal liver which he said he loved. Breakfast was served in the pretty restaurant and there was a wide range on offer including shakshuka. The “small” full English was massive so I can’t imagine how big the full, full English was! All freshly cooked s d delish. All in all a great stay and really really reasonable. We will return!

On the off chance we popped into this delightful rustic pub, to see if we could get a table for dinner, only to be warmly welcome by Emily who from start to finish was an absolute pleasure! She fitted us in without any problems, made us feel so special, talked us through the menu and made us some lovely cocktails. The food we had was delicious especially the starters (beef croquettes)! Thank you so much to your lovely staff, all 3 ladies were brilliant and are a credit to your business. They told us you have rooms; so when travelling in future, we’ll be booking! Stayed overnight en route by cycle from Poole to Bath. A really convenient stop off just over the half-way point, so no detour needed. Well placed for visits to Stourhead and Longleat. Very welcoming staff, great facilities, excellent food and friendly and efficient service. Clean, cosy, well appointed bedrooms with tea/coffee making facilities and quality toiletries. A range of pub style meals for dinner with some more refined choices available too; the chicken and leek pie was awesome - huge portions. Breakfast was equally good with full English and other lighter options available - perfect for getting us fuelled up for our long ride ahead. We were able to store our cycles overnight in a locked outbuilding which was reassuring. Will definitely return next time we are cycling this route.
