The Bell in Maldon

Discovered this pub by chance a week ago when walking a local circular hike in the area. We called to see if they had a table and unfortunately they were fully booked. At the end of the hike we popped in for a drink. The pub is geared up for food mostly on Sundays, but the team were so accommodating and welcomed us to sit at the bar. The atmosphere was lovely - very traditional country pub vibes - with the staff knowing most customers by name. The team were so kind and accomodating, they even managed to squeeze us in for a Sunday Roast which we were so grateful for after our hike. Food was delicious, service was great and everyone was so friendly! We will be back!

A very nice, traditional pub, serving good quality food. We visited with relatives who are regular patrons. The welcome was warm as was the venue on an autumnal evening. Spacious and comfortable with a good selection of ale. The only minor issue was a mix up with the bill, which was swiftly rectified. We look forward to a return visit.

Went for lunch. Prompt and attentive service. Both dishes were of good quality and very well cooked. Good value for money. Would recommend

Lovely old pub, Amazing setting. Fabulous menu. Smoked Haddock kedgeree was fantastic. Lamb and New potatoes, outstanding. Home made desert. Real Ale Wonderful staff .

Excellent Food and well priced. Menu a litlle limited. Service very good but got the impression that it was being stretched for the number of visitors.

Visited today after a lovely circular walk around Woodham Walter. What a lovely find! The service was friendly and efficient, and the food was very tasty and well presented. We will definitely be returning soon.

One of our favorite gastro pubs in the area, had Sunday lunch and as usual the food was to their usual high standards. A very friendly pub, has a good range of beer in very pleasant surroundings. Owners and staff very polite and friendly

First visit here with friends who had invited us. Very good, friendly, polite service. Excellent choice of menu, starters and mains. Difficult to choose as everything well described and tempting. All the food we had was beautifully prepared, well cooked and extremely tasty. Would recommend without hesitation and look forward to a return trip.

The Bell has really nice food and very attentive service. The steak pie is particularly good. The food is prepared with care and tastes very freshly made.

How lovely to spend afternoon in a quaint English country pub, with Fab friends and my Aunt, and Irene had seabass I had steak and mushroom pie with mash and veggies, and Brenda had steak and kidney pud 3 of us had raspberry meringue roulade, Delicious 😋 thank you

Unfortunately disappointed. Heard giod things about the pub as we are local however the cod batter i had was very greasy and oiley as were the chips. My wifes meal was fine except again the batter on the samphire was very heavy and greasy. I find £9.10 for a glass of red a little steep....

Booked in for lunch and we were not disappointed. We've eaten here before and food and drink is always excellent. Very nice pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord and a good selection of wines. Our party of six all had different main courses and all very impressed. Highly recommended and we'll be back soon.

Nice Sunday roast....friendly staff...

Last month me and my wife were lucky enough to have our wedding reception at The Bell. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food choice and quality was exceptional, and they put together a wonderful wedding cake for us. It was a perfect end to our Wedding day. -Perfect traditional country pub & restaurant would highly recommend to anyone.

Doesn't matter how many times we go here, the food is always fantastic. Best Sunday lunch around too! Good selection of wines and a lovely cosy atmosphere. Best pub around.

Have driven past this pub lots of times and never ventured in until last night. It's clearly not a beer pub, as only Fosters and Kronenbourg on tap but hey, this pub is for diners who appreciate really amazing home cooked food (nothing frozen or pre-prepared in this pub!) and really professional friendly service from a young crew. I'll definitely being going back...such a nice change to be charged reasonable prices for decent food (not Brakes or dreary fish and chips). PS desserts are top notch!

Had a family meal there recently on Tuesday 5th September. Great all round. Food was nice and good value, the two women serving were very nice, polite and friendly. Would 100% recommend if you want a decent pub meal out.

Traditional village pub. Warm welcome. Only downside is soft drink like lime and soda seem to cost a small fortune. Other than that definitely worth visiting.

We had our first visit to the Bell for a couple of years last week. Very impressed by the quality of the food and the pleasant and helpful staff. Highly recommended.

Lovely pub. Didn't eat but the food is delicious, from previous experience. Staff attentive and friendly. Only recommendation: another lager or two would be good.

Fantastic old pub been here many times for a drink but haven’t eaten here since before Covid. Sean and Ann are great hosts. The menu is excellent. We had smoked haddock kedgeree to start and monkfish samphire and a cream sauce for main also a chicken supreme and a pork dish all dishes were presented extremely well and very tasty. Washed down with a couple of bottles of Savignon. You must give this a try.

Really good pub food in a very quiet setting

Welcome stop on a hot day's cycle. Shady seating outdoors. Coronation chicken sandwich amazing. Clean toilets. Was busy for a weekday lunchtime

Yesterday I visited this beautifully charming pub with a friend. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding. Highly recommend The Bell and can not wait to return.

I had a great lunch today. I cannot fault the food and service. However they do not take American Express which is kind of strange but so be it.

I called up to book for myself and my partner. I ended up having to amend my booking a couple of times due to unforeseen circumstances but the lady who took my call was extremely accommodating so I can’t thank her enough for that. We were greeted by the same lady when we arrived who gave us a warm welcome and got us sat quickly and took our drinks order. Drinks came quickly and we decided to go for prawns and duck rolls for starter followed by fish and chips for main finishing up with Lemon Syllabub pavlova and butter scotch and pecan cheesecake. We couldn’t fault the food on the evening. Starters were delicious and the fish and chips we both had for mains were really tasty and very filling. The home made deserts were fantastic but definitely finishes us off, we were full after. Service through out the night was fault less, the staff were very attentive making sure everything was ok. We’ve never been to this pub before even though we are fairly local, but after tonight we would definitely come back. Thanks for a lovely evening.

I sadly do not live near to The Bell but luckily my friend does. We had lovely bread and olives to start with and then a huge portion- 3 delicious Seabass fillets with crispy sweet potato chips. My other friend has skate wing which was good and meaty. The landlord was very friendly and we had a good chat with him. I can't stop thinking what a lovely meal we had. The puddings looked yummy but sadly we were too full to partake. A real gem in the middle of the countryside.

From the friendly welcome, to the amazing food, you would not believe this isn’t somewhere in London, charging stupid money. We felt like we were the only ones there. Attentive staff, amazing. 10/10

Lovely oak beamed pub/restaurant. Popped in for a lunchtime meal. Small but nice and cosy better to book to reserve a table. Staff were lovely and friendly. Food was excellent and not too expensive.

What a treat to come back to the Bell after Covid, still good food ,well cooked and home made. So many pubs are having to produce mediocre food at increased prices but The Bell is not cheap but not much more than the run of the mill meals produced elsewhere. Well done!

Outstanding food. Good service. Good beer. Good selection of gin also. Not the cheapest but you wouldn't expect it to be with the quality of food. The price reflects the quality

Really enjoyed the food and the staff were great. However, portions were small and expensive. Left feeling hungry which made the overall experience rather disappointing. I can’t honestly recommend vs other local places serving similar.

Went to The Bell with my 'old' friend Russel Hooks. It was a lovely still summer's evening...a memorable experience. The food was top class.

This was the lunch stop for our ramble via Danbury. Lovely village green setting, charming old building, helpful staff, and good food choices. Also delicious when it arrived. Prices a bit on the steep side, otherwise would have given 5 stars.

This is an excellent place to eat and to enjoy a very good menu. We sat an chatted for a considerable time and didn't feel hurried to leave.

An old fashioned country pub that could possibly benefit from a bit of TLC. Plenty of diners on the day I went for lunch with friends. Excellent menu, a good range of ales, lagers and ciders and friendly service.

The food was fine but the menu was very confusing and the staff were not very helpful explaining it. Kids meal, which was very small, was £13.50! Would have given less stars but the food itself was fine so giving 3 stars. Just very annoyed being charged so much for so little.

Popped in for Sunday dinner on the sour, packed inside so ate main course outside then dessert inside when table became free. Couldn't fault the meal and polite service.

Great old pub which served very nice food and beer. Best thing, if you want to get away from it all, was there was no mobile or Internet reception.

First time having a Sunday roast at the Bell, and just as delicious as any other time we've been here. There roasts are very nearly as good as the steak pies we go for normally. I should mention the staff who make the whe experience come together. To busy eating to take a picture.

Lovely lunch with some dear long term friends to wish bon Voyage to a couple returning to Spain. We had our own room so were able to talk freely without disturbing anybody. A totally enjoyable lunch. Good food at a reasonable price as well. Recommend.

We went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We knew the food was good as we had heard from fellow villagers but we had forgotten how great it was. We had been pre covid but we are only just venturing out after covid. We felt...

We used to eat here a lot but are not sure why we ever got out of the habit of eating out. Now we’ve returned and the food was better than ever. We’ve decided to return regularly as you can’t beat the service, friendly staff/owners...

We have come to expect a high standard of home cooking and friendly service, and once again were not disappointed. Despite it being Fathers' Day, with semi-lockdown conditions, the service was friendly, efficient and the food was excellent.

A very unassuming and lovely country pub! Very easy to book with a friendly person on the end of the phone. Very nice fish and chips with a starter of bread and olives to share. The bread was excellent. Good portion size, not too big...

So nice to be back, after the lockdown. The food is always of the highest standard, changing the menus often with beautiful presented meals served by friendly helpful staff........ SHEER BLISS to eat here after month's of my home cooking.!
