Continental Cafe in Maldon

I was recommended this Cafe by a friend who has a somewhat dubious reputation and nature. But unlike the time in Prague which we won't mention, this cafe was fantastic. I had a delicious burger and a slab of cake which was good for 2 sittings. I would definitely go back here.

My mums favourite place to visit. She 98 and wont go anywhere else in maldon for lunch. She particular likes the toasted sandwiches served with a salad garnish and coleslaw we add the delicious sweet potato fries. Staff are friendly very accommodating as she is in a wheelchair Service is always with a smile great atmosphere highly recommended

Reviewed by Odin the Chow Chow. My pawrents popped in for lunch with me today. We were all very happy with the ambience, the food was excellent and the service was brilliant. It was busy and is obviously very popular! I had a lot of fuss made of me by both the staff and the other guests (which I didn’t mind one bit ☺️). It was lovely and very dog-friendly, they have water bowls if you need them and home-made cheesy dog treats for sale too! It gets a big paw print of approval from Odin the Chow Chow!

Great location, great staff, let down by poor breakfast. Mushrooms were cold, bacon under cooked. Very small size breakfast for the price. Says something when the best bit is the toast.

Lovey friendly staff more than happy to accommodate for me and my 3yr old daughter who wanted a slight menu variation. Sparkling clean environment. Food second to none! Lots of seating. Beautiful area. Had a delicious goats cheese and caramelised onion toasty and milkshake. Fabulous.

Very busy and very slow service. Paying £2:10 for 9 chips was a bit expensive to be honest. Food was nice nevertheless. Waiter very polite and helpful. Would return next time in maldon

Recommend by a friend we visited one mid week afternoon. All the cakes in the display looked really good (although hard to read labels so had to ask). We were sat and our orders were taken and delivered promptly, the cake portions were so big two of us couldn’t finish and so we took the rest home in a box. Yummy !

Mike and his ladies never dissapoint, I'm a regular diner here at Continental, the service is always fast and friendly and the food is top quality and delicious. Plus when the weather is being kind there is the option to dine outside as well as the two indoor sections. Try it... you'll be pleased you did!

Had well-filled, tasty sandwiches in the courtyard; one was gluten, dairy & soy free - staff were very helpful in ensuring what was OK for the allergies. The carrot cake was also excellent and gluten/dairy/soy free .. Have definitely added to our list of great places to eat.

A last minute decision to go for a family brunch in Maldon across the generations. We were looking for somewhere with good accessibility and a wide ranging menu. This café did not disappoint. We were warmly welcomed and seated appropriately to accommodate all needs. The venue has a spacious area with a beautiful glass roof to allow the light to flood in. The decor and furniture is in keeping with the building and the food and coffee was excellent. The tables and floor were clean and the waiting staff friendly and food arrived in a timely fashion. Highly recommended and we would love to come back and try lunch here.

I was really excited to eat here after reading the reviews. However we waited 50 minutes for 2 paninis in which the plain cheese had barely any cheese in and tasted like a plain bread and butter panini. The pulled pork baguette was hard. Upon letting them know this they denied it and didn’t even apologise. Very over priced for a baguette. ……………. In response to the your reply. This is completely incorrect. We were checked on once after our drinks were served. Not during or after the food which was the issue. I completely understand that it was a busy Saturday. However from time of receiving our drinks which were quick the food was not. We were at a point the only couple sitting inside so perhaps we were forgotten about. I understand a 1 star is upsetting however to lie and state someone asked us how our food was is complete lies, if someone had asked we would have told them how we felt, but they did not. So you clearly didn’t look at the cctv. I am not one for usually writing reviews as I understand how it can upset the business and that is not what I want to achieve, however I was extremely let down by the food and felt forgotten about condensing the prices.

Really lovely to sit outside today in the beautiful courtyard, amazing service from Mike and the girls as always, wonderful food and quick service for a busy Saturday! Can’t wait to come back soon!

Went to the cafe yesterday, ordered the regular breakfast, came with no beans and the smallest piece of bacon, maybe beans seem to common for a well presented places but pretty disappointed :( Regardless, really nice spot, specially in the sunlight room! Quartz table and velvet chairs, Had to wait a bit as there were 2 bigger orders placed before us, but the service went above when a waiter recleaned our table after seeing we split some hot chocolate, Overall a decent visit, maybe won’t rush back (i like my beans)

We just popped in near to closing time for tea and cake. The staff were very welcoming and the service was great. The cake was amazing, very generous portions that I had to take home in a takeaway box! A fairly small and intimate indoor seating area, but that made it nice and cosy. We will definitely be back to try to food (and more cake).

Husband popped in to grab me a takeaway baguette. Chicken, bacon, avo and mayo. When he returned there were chips that came with it and they were so so good. Sadly once we were home and I opened the box for the baguette they’d forgotten the bacon! Everything else was lovely but I definitely missed the bacon! As that mix of flavours is my favourite. Husband said other than that staff were very friendly.

Have been coming here since I was a child and the quality has always remained the same. Best curly fries ever!! Usually a bit of a wait, but you don't mind because you know what you're getting. Small cosy inside, and lovely outside area too. Staff are always nice and they have a cake counter which is always hard to resist, sometimes I just pop in for a takeaway cake!

Great place for breakfast in Maldon

Staff were very helpful and welcoming, the place had a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere, food was excellent and very reasonably priced, all home made and the home made slaw was to die for. If you want a medium sized lunch then it is the perfect place, would heartily recommend it

Can't thank the staff enough for their help and consideration. I rang to book a table, and asked for somewhere in a corner as I have a very low immune system. The lady was brilliant, she said no problem we will book the booth out for you. Arrived today welcomed with a big smile and taken straight to the table. It made me feel very comfortable for once to eat out, as no one else was close. Food was fantastic, hot & well presented. Cakes were outstanding. Value for money. So thank you for being so caring. Already booked for next week. Xx

Dined here with friends for a Saturday brunch. Very good coffee, decent sandwiches and helpful staff. We all enjoyed our food as well as the atmosphere. We lingered there and were not rushed at all. Very positive. Recommended.

A friend and I have just enjoyed an amazing Afternoon Tea. A tasty selection of sandwiches, huge scones and lovely selection of cakes!! Lovely staff and a pot of never ending tea, we will recommending to everyone, thank you for a lovely afternoon.

We choose this cafe as it very close to the Maldon Escape Rooms… and what a find! I booked a table for 11 girls (and a few adults) to have a birthday lunch after the escape room activity and the staff were so accommodating. Mike and his team (especially Emily who took the booking and was so helpful while we were there) were really welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. They even played birthday music for us as we brought out a cake. The food/drinks were delicious and quick to arrive. The little outdoor courtyard is lovely and very well looked after. The cafe gave us use of one of the wooden gazebos which was perfect for the private birthday group to dine in. A big thank you to the staff. They are lovely and very happy to serve! Would recommend a visit! Big thumbs up!

We had a lovely lunch at the Continental Café today. The staff are excellent and unusual to see happy and courteous staff. The food was excellent, well presented and delicious. Particularly like that the serve loose tea in a proper tea pot ! I would highly recommend anyone visiting Maldon to go there.

Lovely welcome and wonderful setting. Lunch was delicious - Morroccan Vegetable Salad and a Chicken Ceaser jacket potato. Big negative for me… when we ordered the waitress asked ‘do you want butter on your jacket potato?’ To which i replied yes.. as i normally would in a cafe. My potato arrived, toppings on top with a HUGGGEEE pot of butter, an amount no-one would put on a potato, the crux, £1.00 charge on our bill, i complained and was told it was on the menu. It was, right at the bottom, but the waitress didn’t ask if i wanted ‘a pot of butter’ she specifically said ‘butter on my potato’, which, in my experience, is standard practice in a cafe, for free! Weird!

When no one arrived, my partner had to go up and asked a waitress if we could make our order and she said she'd be with us soon. Around 15 minutes passed and the same waitress we asked to take our order wandered aimlessly around the room, scanning the room a few times but ignoring us and not coming to take our order. We found the staff completely unattentive and finally had our order taken by a waiter who came to clear the table next to us. Drinks arrived and the iced coffee and milkshake were lovely but we had finished our drinks long before our food came and we were looked straight through when trying to get their attention for more, they just walked away. The food arrived just shy of an hour after we arrived and we only ordered 2 paninis, a baguette and some chips. On arrival we were offered sauces, we asked for mayo and it never arrived but the table next to us did! Really disappointing as the food was good, but we won't be back. It was pricy for what it was, and we had planned to order 3 slices of cake to take away but the service was honestly so bad that I didn't want to give them anymore of my money. Such a shame. I found the staff very rude, the older woman especially.

Always a great experience at Continental Cafe and our go-to in Maldon. The cake selection is always ridiculously good and plentiful.

I visited this cafe whilst visiting Maldon with friends. There was lots of places to sit, inside snd outside. We got a table straight away, we all had a hot drink and a cake. Their cakes are wonderful and so tasty. You have a hard time choosing what one you want! We all enjoyed our cakes, the service was quick, the staff were very friendly and even though it was quite packed in there the service was very good. This is a great place to go if you are visiting Maldon High Street.

I decided to visit continental cafe after reading a review online and I am so glad that I did. I'm not sure I would have noticed this wonderful little eatarie in the heart of Maldon if I had just strolled by. It's so much bigger than it looks with plenty of seating both inside and outside, in a pretty courtyard to the rear of the property. We were seated immediately, even though it was busy and our orders taken quickly. Our waitress was pleasant and accommoding with a good knowledge of the menu and ingredients. She was happy to add or remove items from our order. Our food was promptly served and was hot and nicely presented. The portions are quite large so unfortunately I couldn't finish the amazing slice of cake i had chosen for dessert but was offered a box to take it home as someone had noticed there was cake left on my plate. How nice was that? I can totally understand why people post pictures of the fabulous and imaginative cake displays as they truly are spectacular and taste even better than they look. This place is a must for lovers of well cooked food and delicious cakes. I feel sad for anyone who hasn't discovered the continental cafe. It is well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed. Well done to all management and staff

We visit many Cafes and restaurants and Continental Cafe is a real Gem in Maldon. The coffee was great,but the food was tasty,fresh and generous. Very good attentive service with a smile too. Top marks

Have used this venue before and was pleasantly surprised- today we had a lunch of jacket spuds olives wine water and what a super simple lunch - just wish I had room for a slice of the fantastic cakes - sat outdoors and chatted with owner Mike - he has been there 6 years and has developed a perfect formula - there are lots of places to eat in Maldon but this is the best 👍👍

The Continental must be THE place for breakfast in Maldon. Mike and his staff are friendly, attentive and courteous. Our breakfasts were well-presented and good value for money. Try to get a seat in the front window which overlooks the lovely old All-Saints church.

Really popular cafe, and deservedly so. Such a nice way to unwind and enjoy some good food. Coffee ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. A tasty Americano made just how I asked, nice and strong. Both of our breakfasts were very good also. The Scrambled Eggs and Bacon on granary bread were delicious, plus my wife's full English was generous and good quality. The sausages were juicy and tasty, the mushrooms were much better than the normal wet bland offering. Loads of scrambled egg and toast ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. The cakes looked so good we purchased some to take home. Well worth a visit!

We’ve been regularly coming to the Continental Cafe for brunch since moving to the area 2 years ago. Great food, particularly the doorstop granary bread and homemade cakes (try not to think about the calories). Staff are always busy but very friendly and helpful.

I go here for lunch quite a lot, whether it’s catch up with your friends or family lunch. continental cafe always do their best to provide the best experience for customers. The food is lovely and their cakes are amazing. The only downfall is that they only do walk ins and sometimes it’s too busy to wait. However I definitely recommend.

After announcing expansion & opening of the new starlight room, this place was busier than staff could cope with. OK it was lunchtime on a Saturday, but they should have been better prepared. We did get seated as soon as we arrived, but it was apparently the last table... And also the most WOBBLY table I have sat at for a long time 😡. We were told there was a 45 minute wait for food after being seated and after ordering. Cajun chicken & goats cheese salad were both well prepared & really good. After getting our mains however, we never saw our server again! I had to hunt one down to order dessert, when our Banoffee cake and Bueno cookie dough pie were brought to our tiny table still cluttered with our main course she asked - " do you want me to clear your plates"🙄. Banoffee cake was huge and amazing but the Bueno creation was a bit too solid/slickly even for my sweet tooth! Overall it was pleasant enough, but an hour and a half for 2 basic courses was not the best experience. I would probably give it another go for the good food, but at less busy time perhaps.

The new roof room is airy and clean and sunny so when it was windy outside we enjoyed this brand new 5 day old space. This is in addition to the usual delicious food we always enjoy there
