The Beetle & Wedge Boathouse in South Oxfordshire

We stayed overnight and took dinner and breakfast which were very good. However, caution is required when booking accommodation which, in our case was less good. Our ‘room’ comprised a converted single garage attached to an adjacent and occupied single house, complete with old abandoned motorbikes in the small garden. A dead giveaway was that the garage still had what appeared to be a white up-and-over door. However, the main inconvenience (pun not intended) was the lack of any door between the bedroom and bathroom, removing any semblance of privacy, such that, even after 25 years of marriage my wife and I felt the need to exit to the garden while the other used the lavatory. Not good!

My husband and I had dinner at The Beetle & Wedge on a Saturday in February. The food and cocktails were delicious and staff were friendly and helpful.

We came from my birthday celebrations as my local pub had a private function … what can I say the ambiance was lovely and buzzy , staff welcoming and food was fab … my husband said best roast he had in a long while ( that’s saying something ) ! Terrific location with great views of the Thames. Wide range of choices on the menu. The scallops, terrine and spiced venison pie were all delicious, beautifully presented and well seasoned. Just enough room to share a pudding. Staff are engaging and eager to please. Fortunate to see a family of otters on the opposite riverbank, a real bonus. No hesitation in returning, never had a bad meal here.

The riverside setting is amazing. We had a table by the windows in the restaurant with lovely decor, log burner etc. Staff were very attentive, and plenty of them, and smartly dressed. Our main waitress, Jasmine, was lovely and went above and beyond to make our special day. The menu had plenty of choice and the food was excellent. Overall it was perfect for our special lunch.

We took our daughter and family out for her birthday. We ordered from the set menu for January, two course's for £22. My husband and I were extremely lucky with our meals, outstanding food,but 3 of our party weren't so lucky. Overall I would recommend people to give it a visit.

Visited for lunch this afternoon and it was brilliant! The restaurant is superb and the menu is spectacular - a big thank you to our waitress Lily who was attentive throughout and despite my seed intolerance was extremely accommodating on helping me choose a meal - nothing was too much trouble! We were very disappointed with our trip here as the service was so incredibly slow and the food, when it did arrive was ok but not really worth the money. We then waited half an hour for coffee and were told that a ‘trainee’ was doing it. They should have been supervised. It is a perfect location for a restaurant but it needs to get a grip on its staff

Nice place right on the Thames , quality food , unfortunately I find the you staff not very educated in this service and miserable, in this industry its so important to be professional and friendly , doesn't matter if a expensive or non expensive restaurant . It's a shame as a huge compliment to the chef as the food was exceptional. I know its Winter but the Restaurant was very cold , even the staff was wearing jackets ! I can't blame them , Real shame . Maybe the management/owner should look into this .

Don’t miss this! For January: Monday-Thursday lunch AND dinner two or three course set menu available £22/27. Caesar salad starter - delicious and plentiful; salmon tagliatelle and pork stew - both excellent main courses. Prettily presented lovely cheesecake. What a wonderful lunch spent at the Beetle and wedge with family yesterday. The Restaurant was spacious and the tables were nicely spaced to not make you feel compromised. Absolutely wonderful restaurant. Beautiful setting and the staff are so warm and welcoming. Had a pre Christmas roast turkey lunch with family and the food was such a high standard along with the presentation. Staff make you feel you are all valued and individual. Fantastic place, with a great view of the river as a backdrop. The staff were super friendly and efficient. 2 of our party were a bit late but it was not a problem. Only very slight niggle was that the gnocchi 2 of us had was a little on the small side.

A friend recommended this spot as we were cruising on the Thames . When I booked I discovered they had some private moorings . So we were able to moor up on the opposite bank and then they sent a boat to collect us for dinner and returned us afterwards . Just brilliant service . The location right on the river is stunning . Great restaurant and staff. Food normally excellent but just one complaint this time The chef doesn't know how to make a Bordelaise sauce. I sent back a peppercorn sauce as asked for Bordelaise and all they did was to take out most of the peppercorns and give it back to me. At that stage decider to give up asking and just eat with peppercorn sauce.

We arrived earlier than expected but the pre-arranged champagne was ready for us and we drank it on the river side terrace in the sunshine. There is usually lots going on on the river to watch. It’s a beautiful spot. We were celebrating a special occasion, having just got married, and we felt extra special when given a congratulations card which all the staff had signed. I mentioned that I was torn between 2 desserts, having finally decided it was bought out, followed by a mini version of my other choice with congratulations written in chocolate on the plate - so sweet of them. It is touches like that that makes all the difference. The food was excellent with a good choice for our dairy free friend. We have been many times before and it has always been a good experience. This trip just reinforced that - we will definitely return and highly recommend it.

Amazing food, drink and service. Dining with friends, we were promptly seated on an amazing table by the Thames and our drinks arrived in a jiffy. We couldn't decide what to have from the menu as so much of it sounded tasty, so we decided to share! Tuna, prawns, steak pies, pork belly to name a few, honestly it was all so tasty. With an excellent and vibrant atmosphere, we had an evening to remember. Our glasses were topped up regularly without prompting and staff consistently but subtly tending to our needs. What a place, best eatery in Oxfordshire by a country mile!

We arrived by boat unannounced and we’re hoping to have a few drinks and perhaps some lunch. The owner greeted us, and explained that the restaurant was closed but he gave us all some chips (which were amazing by the way) and some bread and olives to tide us over. We ended up staying until dinner anyway and everyone’s meals were superb. I had smoked trout which was out of this world, and all my friends couldn’t have been more complimentary about their choices. The visit to the beetle and wedge turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Thoroughly excellent all round, and what a location!! I will definitely be visiting again.

Very accommodating and friendly staff in a location which is second to none in that part of the world. Superb food, great drink selection, friendly and professional staff with an amazing outlook along the river. All the ingredients added up to a memorable afternoon/evening. Ben and the team did a great job of accommodating us (6 guys on a Le Boat) at no notice! We turned up on our boat and were greeted with a smile and a willingness to get us in. We were able to tie up on the other side of the river (so that we didn't completely obliterate the views for other diners!) and the Beetle & Wedge ferry came and got us, by which time our table was set! We'd just missed lunch, so we got some drinks in, with more than a few bowls of chips and bread and olives and settled in waiting for the dinner service to start a few hours later! Food was fantastic as was the service and setting. Icing on the cake was being allowed to moor over night to be woken up in the morning with a bacon and sausage brioche bap and a coffee!! Great job, thoroughly appreciative of the experience.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. Stunning setting, fantastic food and great service. Good value for money too. I am slowly working my way through the menu! Looking forward to coming back again soon.
