Stayed here regularly for the last couple of months, mostly at weekends. The food has been very good, tasty and generous portions. The rooms are lovely and comfortable, very good amenities and lovely and clean. But above all, the staff have been the most friendly and accommodating people we have ever met in a hotel / pub. Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome. We would highly recommend this pub / restaurant / hotel if you would like a good honest comfy place to stay with excellent service. It can get busy, especially for the fantastic Sunday roasts, so we'd always advise booking to avoid disappointment, it has a lovely buzz and vibe . Very quiet country village setting with parking and views over fields yet only 5 minutes from the m25, ideal location. Overall an excellent place to stay, you won't be disappointed.

Booking dinner at The Bedford Arms is confusing from the start. On the website it talks about booking in the pub - but there's no alternative offered. It turns out there is a separate restaurant, but no obvious way of booking it! In the pub section there are a range of tables and, despite me asking for a normal dinner table, we were assigned to what I can only describe as a childrens table. It was tiny and the seats were very low. I felt I was looking up at fellow diners around me! We complained and got offered to sit in another room, which was deserted apart from us. Consequently the service was non-existant and even there the tables were mostly tiny. We were informed that two main dishes were not available, the pie and the steak. Two (I would have thought) of the most popular dishes and indeed what I would have wanted. The food was OK but not what I expected for, what used to be before the major refurbishment, a very nice restaurant. My liver and bacon was distinctly short of liver. With the lack of service, we decided to cut our losses and skip starters, desserts and coffee. Overall a really poor experience. It's still not clear how one books a table in the restaurant, as opposed to the pub part and the service was practically non-existant. We won't be returning.

We left as it was just busy and not inviting. We booked to celebrate 3 birthdays for a nice quiet meal. They had a wedding going around 80 people overspilling into the bar where the football was on. So just went to another restaurant that was better for our evening.

Went to the Bedford Arms for Sunday lunch. Very nice surroundings. We both ordered the roast beef. After waiting 30 - 40 minutes it arrived. It was cold. Probably sitting on the side somewhere. I complained and it was replaced. There were 2 small slices of beef and 3 small roast potatoes that resembled thoses of supermarket ready meal. Will not be returning.

I love this place. Very English-chic countryside. Large car parking, beautiful deco inside, clean, friendly staff, a lot of space to sit inside and outside, good food and drinks, reasonably priced. We have now been for Sunday lunch several times as a family. I would stay in a hotel too for a night in the future, as the rooms also look good.

I have passed the Bedford Arms many by times en route to work for years, not thinking it a venue for visiting to dine or even drop in for drinks. How wrong I was on both counts. It’s not just a hotel. The team there are experienced, professional and friendly and made our two lunch visits most enjoyable. The dining areas are spacious and comfortable, wood panelling being a feature reflecting its heritage. The outside areas comprise a pleasant garden and patio with accessible car parking. The bar area is also spacious and notable for its selection of well kept real ales. The food, drinks, value and the service provided here are second to none. We’re planning our next visit.

We haven’t visited the Bedford since it was renovated and whilst looks great, the food was very average with the mushy peas served with the fish and chips looking brown and not very appetising at all…the batter was thick and overdone and there was a lot of wastage on plates. Also the waiter seemed a little impatient… maybe he was having a day but he was just a bit off…

We hadn't been to Bedford Arms for quite a while so decided to book for Sunday lunch were looking forward to it. However the food was not very good - the roast dinner that the rest of the group had ordered was luke warm and i had the fish and chips which was very greasy and lacked flavour. The service was mediocre as well and the starters of the sourdough bread and the beef dripping popcorn were not very good either (i expected better presentation and the pop corn was like it had just come from the local supermarket) All in all a disappointing experience and i don't think we will be going there again - such a shame as the location and the atmosphere in the pub is lovely.

We had a nice table in front of the fire - though it was turned off at the time. Service was friendly and efficient and we were through 2 courses in just over an hour. We chose crab and prawn cocktail, and fig and radicchio salad as starters. The prawns were tasty , but unaccountably accompanied by 4 quarter slices of unbuttered white bread when brown is usually considered more appropriate. The salad was light and good but with virtually no olive oil it was difficult to see how it could possibly have amounted to the 585 calories claimed. The beef mains were thinly cut, tender and delicious and a nice change from the sometimes gristly and leathery offerings we have experienced at other Herts venues. The beef was also of a quantity that suited our appetites , whereas rivals establishments sometimes load the plate so high it short circuits the breathing. The accompanying vegetables and Yorkshire went down well and the dish was never dry. Only niggle- the roast potatoes , while perfectly consumable, were todayundercooked to the extent that they were effectively just parboiled. Together with a large glass of Merlot and a pint of Peroni the bill came to £82, £90 including our discretionary tip. So friendly, tasty, slightly pricey and we look forward to returning when the weather is a bit warmer to sample their extensive range of outdoor seating.

We were disappointed by our first visit here in a while. The food was good, although not oustanding, but the service was slow and poor. The olives to come with our starters were not served, and when we reminded the waiter, they still didn’t arrive until the rest of the starters had been finished. We had a long wait for our main, and we had asked for one burger without cheese , however it came with cheese. The waiter insisted on taking it back to the kitchen, only for it to be returned a few minutes later, saying it would take a while to replace. The bun was burnt. Our salt grinder had no salt in it, and when we were broyght a replacement that too was empty. Finally, when our desserts were brought out, we had no cutlery; we were told it would be there in a minute, however it did not arrive, and one of our party had to go and ask for it at the bar. Some of this seems a bit petty, but the amalgamation of all these issues did not make for a relaxing birthday meal.

We have loved coming to the Bedford Arms on many occasions, however yesterday wasn't one of them. The kitchen appeared all over the place and served only 2 of our mains while the other 2 of us had to wait another 15 minutes, plus to make it worse the starter plates hadn't been cleared. This was to celebrate my Dads 92nd birthday but sadly it was spoilt a little.

Visited with family and friends for the sunday lunch menu while on holiday in the area. My wife and I ordered from the vegan options and were generally impressed. My wife ordered the tomato soup to start, a good portion and was very tasty. She then ordered the vegan risotto as a main, however she received the vegetarian risotto. Despite clearly ordering the vegan option, this was not taken down by the waiting staff. Because of this she had another 10 minutes to wait for food whilst the rest of us were eating. I ordered the nut roast which was good, nothing special but good. The roast potatoes could have been fluffier however. Overall a decent meal in a nice building, but could have been inproved.

We were pleased to be able to book an outside table. This was imperative for us as we had two high-risk people in our party. However, when we arrived, we were forced by the staff to enter the pub in order to secure our table. We were given plastic menus (rather than disposable paper ones). We were unable to order our meal at our outside table: again, we were told that we had to enter the pub to order. Finally, we were unable to pay at our outside table: again, we were told we had to enter the pub to pay. None of the staff was wearing masks. The fact that we had an outside table was totally NEGATED by the fact that we were forced to enter the busy pub three times! This caused us much stress and consternation. If you are at all worried about the risk of Covid-19 transmission, I would not recommend visiting this establishment. It's a pity as the food was very good.

Our friends wanted to try out the Bedford Arms having been recommended: Having had a disappointing meal previously we said we would give it a second chance. We all struggled to find a dish to our liking on the limited menu. Two of us chose fish cakes for our main and both of us had one fish cake with virtually no fish only potato. When the bill came we couldn’t believe that the very mediocre rose we were served was £25. More fool us for not checking the price when ordering, we hadn’t been given a wine list. Overall the food was uninteresting and over priced. The atmosphere in the main restaurant was also no existent. Also more importantly their Covid precautions were extremely poor, no masks, gloves or social distancing.

Better the first time ... so we visited here the first time last week. We sat inside, were impressed with Covid precautions and the food was excellent. I even sent the venue an email to say how nice it was to visit a venue which had a real chef... an email they ignored .. maybe that was a warning So went back today, had our pup with us so we sat outside and ordered 2 burgers just as we had the previous week, one to be well done. When they arrived we asked which one was well done, and the waitress said that they always cook them that way. They were both medium rare, not a problem for me but my wife won’t eat anything with blood... so sent it back, when a replacement returned it was indeed well done but dry and fairly grissely.Mine, the medium rare one didn’t have any grissel but did contain a tooth (see pic) bearing in mind that it’s wayyy too small to be a cows tooth, one has to wonder if the beef burger was made of beef... it’s smaller than out dogs teeth... so mouse? Rat? Whatever it is, it shouldn’t have been there and makes you wonder what meat they’d used... although maybe best not to think about it! The maitre de collected the plates and i said “you might want the tooth back” he laughed .. I caught up with him and explained it wasn’t a joke and showed him the picture. To be fair he didn’t charge for either burger or our drinks, and said he’d tell the kitchen.I’m not sure we’ll be rushing back here, despite the location, I prefer my burgers made of beef and toothless!

I’ve just reviewed The menu as we are coming for dinner in the next couple of days. I’m sure the quality will be very good however I am very disappointed at how uninspired and traditional the menu design is with a lot of fried and heavy food. Booked for a special Christmas meal with 12 friends. Booking and pre ordering on the menu was fine and dietary requirements were met. However, on arrival at the hotel we were not greeted by anyone and I had to ask two separate people where we should go. We were told but not lead to the dining room. The food was brought out relatively quickly but ordering drinks was more problematic and other than a wine menu there was not a drinks menu so we had to guess brands of spirit and we opted not to have cocktails as we didn't know what to order. After the main course we were left completely alone in the dining room and had to call out on 3 separate occasions for service. When the bill came there were items on it that hadn't been ordered and where a coffee liqueur is £6 on the menu it was listed as coffee and Tia Maria individually on the bill at almost £8. Not impressed with that. Overall we felt we weren't as welcome as hotel residents in the restaurant. The food itself was ok but not worth coming back again for.

Chenies is a well heeled part of the world so what a pleasant surprise to find such a good value and unpretentious eaterie - despite all the personalised number plates parked outside - where we had supper in the bar. NB the restaurant is significantly smarter. Wide age group customer base - spread from millennials to OAPs. Service good and well cooked relatively simple food i.e. whitebait and Bedford pie - in good portion sizes not pretending to be haute cuisine. Happy to return .

Overall disappointing, came here for the roast as all previous times this was very good. However This time the lamb was overdone the potatoes were overdone. And a portion of vegetables was pathetic. When I pointed out to the waitress that one tiny slice of carrot was not sufficient. She claimed that was the portion size. She thought that would be the end of the conversation. So I said in that case please take the whole dinner back. She did not reply and walked over to another member of staff then disappeared to the kitchen and returned 10 minutes later with a portion of vegetables. However by then I was at the end of my dinner. We choose from the festive menu and most had the turkey as main course. Reports back that the turkey was very nice, not dry. Others had the cod which was rather a small serving but tasty. Sadly there was not one choice for vegetarians in the party. Just root roasted vegetables and not much else to be honest. Very disappointing. The pescatarian members of the party could not have the cod as it was served wrapped in pancetta. It really would have been nice were there more choice of fish plus another vegetarian choice.

They have a front lounge and bar and a more formal dining room with extensive menu the culinary fare matches both rooms and the prices, as well. There are larger rooms for big gatherings or wedding receptions and a cosy side room for afternoon tea parties. They also have B&B; facilities, so quite a flexible venue, which we have often enjoyed over the years.

Sweet potato chips side was good too. It was pretty busy, not overly so and service was polite without being over-friendly. Beers were tasty and no more than most pubs nowadays. There is quite a bit of outside seating, great in clement weather. The c.3m walk from the village via Latimer, across the Chess River and back past Chenies House was easy going and very attractive too!

First time I've used this place for many years as my offices are now nearby. Good service, food good, garden very pleasant. Non-alcoholic Erdinger beer is a huge £5.20 per bottle, which is just ridiculous and opportunistic as there is no duty on non-alcoholic beverages.

We were invited to a special birthday lunch and there were about 30 of us in a separate dining room. We were there on a Saturday. The meal was table d'ote, but in advance, we had at least three choices for a three course meal. My partner and I both chose Onion Soup to start. Personally, although I loved the onion soup, I thought it a little too oily, but that maybe me being picky as I'm on low fats! My partner had sea bass fillet and to me the portion looked a rather small for a man, but he said it was lovely. I had poussin which was lovely, but difficult to cut away from the bone. My partner had the cheese board knowing that this would be more filling after eating fish and it was massive in comparison with the mains; he enjoyed it immensely and even shared the last few portions with one of our mutual friends. I had fruit salad. Compared to others on my table my portion was mean, so I asked the waitress to put more on and she did. Well if you don't ask you don't get. Well that was enjoyable too. With our tea and coffee after the meal we all had birthday cake. We were all busting after all that food so any small portions individually, didn't matter by the end of the afternoon. A joyous and happy time had by all.

For many years this has been my favourite local place to take people to for "occasion" evening meals as I've always been more than pleased by delicious food with excellent service. I've never visited at lunchtime. However, this week a friend took me there for lunch...

My partner and I stayed at the Bedford Arms last weekend and it was just lovely. We fancied a weekend away from the busy city, and with the hotel being only a short taxi ride from the tube station it was a perfect location. The hotel was just as it looked on the website and had friendly staff who gave great service. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Being Vegan I usually struggle when it comes to food however they had some Vegan options on the menu which was a lovely surprise! We also went for a lovely afternoon walk around the surrounding village. Definitely will recommend to family and friends! Thanks!

Booked a table for 7 for lunch and wish I hadn’t. I called to book the day before and was told that the bar was full but we could go in the restaurant at midday. I asked whether we would be on our own in the restaurant as when I had visited there in the past the restaurant had been empty and soulless but was assured that they were very busy so went ahead and booked. We arrived and surprise, surprise, we were on our own for best part of an hour. The bar and restaurant were empty. The food was not great. I ordered the parfait but it came with 4 tiny slices of brioche toast, nothing like enough. The burgers were nothing special. The sandwiches were made with pre-sliced bread and served with a salad slathered in too much dressing with processed coleslaw. However the icing on the cake was the skin on the pots of mayonnaise! Yuk. The drinks were very expensive. We will not be going back.

Never been disappointed by the dining experience at The Bedford Arms. It's all wonderfully old fashioned. You get proper service by experienced waiters in very traditional surroundings in the formal dining room. Meals are also served in the bar area. The food is wholesome basic cooking, a mix of English and European cuisines. Ingredients are good quality and the recipes are tasty. The car park is a good size, which is just as well because this is a busy hotel and restaurant. On this occasion we had to cancel two guests from our party at very short notice, but they amended our pre-order without complaining and didn't charge for the cancelled meals. Very impressed with this flexibility.

I’ve never had an emotional response provoked by food. The Duck breast did just that. I was shocked that food could even taste that good. My only qualm is I could have easily eaten a second serving! I eat out staying away with work at least 3 nights a week for the last 8 months and this is my favourite dish so far. To top it off the ale from the local brewery, “Marlo - Rebellion” was a beautiful brew.

We met family here for drinks late afternoon, and were instantly impressed with the lovely surroundings, a wood burner flickering away, which was a welcome sight on a cold wet day. The staff are so accomodating and friendly and after looking at the menu, we will be returning for Sunday lunch very soon.

This is a pub that sells itself as a high end restaurant and hotel. But it’s a pub that’s rough around the edges. The room reminds me of a travel lodge but at double the price. The staff are inhospitable which is a worry for a hospitality business.

We recently booked a table for 4 to have Sunday Lunch at 3.00pm at The Bedford Arms Hotel. We were allocated a spacious table in the front bar / dining room area which was very pleasant. The staff were excellent and the food was of a very good standard and plentiful. This is a popular location for Sunday Lunch and quite rightly too with an excellent choice of roast dinners as well as other dishes for those who prefer a fish dish etc. The food was well prepared and enjoyable. There are plenty of walks available in the local area so The Bedford Arms Hotel is an ideal location for either Sunday Lunch or a weekend break.

Returned to the Bedford Arms having stayed here about a year ago. It is close to Harefield hospital where we were visiting a relative. Our room was comfortable but furnishings such as the bed head are looking a little tired. We were not told that the restaurant was closed on the evening of our stay and only discovered this upon check in. The manager did eventually agree to pay for a taxi to take us to a local pub for dinner but as it happened this was only a few hundred yards away - but was very good. However breakfast was probably the worst I have had. I only wanted poached eggs, bacon and tomato. I received ONE poached egg which was over cooked, one rasher of poor quality, fatty bacon and half a tomato!. It was pitiful. So next time we need to stay in this area we will be going elsewhere. A great shame.

We took some very dear American friends for afternoon tea at the Bedford Arms and were very satisfied with the choice of teas, selection of delicious finger sandwiches (produced in different coloured bread for each filling) and superb scones and cakes! The clotted cream was exactly what we had dreamed it would be and the scones tasted so fresh. This was a real treat and right on our doorstep, so to speak! All I can say to the Bedford Arms is thank you; we will return!

Pub/hotel listed on the Chenies Manor website so it was very convenient and also shown as a 2017 best pub in the county winner. Couldn't book by phone but could by email. Pleasant welcome and nicely positioned table in old bar. Good home cooking with a number of specials including a proper steak and ale pie and fresh vegetables. Desserts looked good and had a truly excellent summer pudding. Would certainly visit again if I'm in the area and my even go out of my way to visit. If its a hot day there are plenty of tables outside and a special old citroen mobile bar! Recommended.

Some kind of joke. Booked a table for Fathers Day at 12pm. Seemed ominous when we arrived (10 mile Journey with 2 kids) and it was still closed at 11:55 with no sign of any life from within or the kitchen. Sat in garden until 12:10 then called them. Apparently “Jane usually opens before 12”, and “who said we’re closed?”. Could take no more of the farcical situation and left to find a place with far more accommodating staff with a level of competence. I’m sure this place may have been good at some point in time but whoever runs it now clearly has either zero customer care or is being seriously let down by whoever should be running it. The gardener is doing a great job though!!

I went with friends last night and ordered the Christmas turkey. It was very disappointing. The turkey tasted processed and the bread sauce was no more than slightly flavoured milk with no bread consistency at all. The veg were ok but the potatoes had obviously been reheated several times. A pity as I had always rated the restaurant highly. I did not say anything at the time as did not want to ruin the evening with friends.

Great easy gastropub within 2 minutes walk to the station. The Guinness was fresh and creamy and service was friendly and nice. The atmosphere was easy and happy. Easy choice if in the neighborhood. Food wasn't too bad either.

I would definitely return to The Jolly Cricketers. The food was lovely - I had the duck leg, very crispy and tender. Service was great and quick. The atmosphere generally is very nice, relaxed cosy pub vibes. They don’t have parking so you need to park in the village- there are some spaces outside, however worse case scenario you may have to walk a couple of mins (although easy to pull over outside to drop off those that are less mobile).
