After reading great reviews about this place since new management took over I was excited about having lunch here, it was awful in the past. What a letdown! Unfortunately, it seems like nothing has changed. I guess the recent reviews are by staff or their family. It’s a lovely clean (apart from the filthy curled up menus on the tables) airy pub/restaurant, plenty of seating, hardly surprising it’s empty though. It’s a dog friendly place, but even though they have 2 water bowls out for dogs nobody obviously cares, as they were both bone dry. We ordered our food at the bar, the barman/waiter asked if I wanted our starters before our main course, I should have realised how bad service would be then and there. I asked if the child’s hunter’s chicken was exactly the same as the adult version, just a smaller portion, he said ‘it’s all the same just much smaller than the adult version’. A simple yes would have sufficed. Our starters arrived, fortunately a waitress had spotted we hadn’t been given cutlery, and she gave us some just a few seconds before we had our starters. The black pudding was very nice, the prawns were good, but the coating was overwhelming in pepper flavour. No idea why our starters arrived in a small dish, on a napkin and on a plate, the napkin and small dish were pointless. It seems new management like wasting money. The main courses arrived in reasonable time, but we then had to wait (while our food was getting cold) as we had to ask for cutlery, salt, and ketchup. The clueless waiter hadn’t brought anything to our table after taking our starter dishes away. I tried to salt my chips, only to discover he had given me an empty salt pot! The skin on chips weren’t very nice, lots of rotten black bits in them and green ones, they were very thin too, so quite a few were like twigs. The hunter’s chicken wasn’t nice, the chicken was really dry, the cheese was revolting, like melted plastic. The bacon was ok, nice bbq sauce fortunately. Unfortunately, even though I had checked with the waiter prior to ordering what the dish would contain, it just had some sliced lettuce with lots of chopped peppers in it, certainly not a dressed salad! I asked the waiter for salad dressing, he went to get some, then he told me the salad hadn’t been dressed as it was a children’s dish, peculiar, as before he had confirmed, twice, it was the same as the adult dish just smaller. I have no idea why the cook would think a child wouldn’t eat a dressed salad but wanted lots of chopped peppers! Not even cucumber in the salad, radishes, carrot, beetroot or tomatoes. Fortunately the lasagne and garlic bread were nice. Again, we had no check back, pity, as we wanted more drinks. At 1pm, an hour after lunches started to be served I saw the barman/waiter preparing the condiment containers for each table, that should have been done a completed before they opened for lunch. No wonder he gave me an empty salt pot! All in all, clueless staff (in desperate need of training), plus a cook who can’t even manage to make a salad, or cook a plain piece of chicken correctly didn’t enthral. We won’t be back. Probably ok to drink here, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend bothering with the food.

A group of 6 of us visited the Bedes Lea for a meal this week knowing it has recently re-opened under new management. This is quite a large pub with a lovely conservatory which customers can sit and dine as well as several tables in lounge and surrounding areas. The menus are very varied, we opted for the 'Seniors' menu which was exceptional value at £8.99 for 3 course meal. Yes, the main course is smaller than from the regular menu, but that suited us. I had tomato soup with hot roll/butter, bolognese pasta with garnish side salad and a meringue desert with various berries and sauce with ice cream. Others in the group had Fish & chips, Hunters chicken, Macaroni cheese etc. so plenty of choices. It was a filling meal and we all agreed the portions were ample! There are other menus also, including one for kids. Service was just right, not rushed and the staff were very friendly and efficient, most are young people but they do a great job. The pub itself is very tastefully furnished, very clean and although several televisions were showing football, they weren't overpowering so we could chat quite happily. Have to say, although this pub has only been re-opened about 16 weeks, the new management run by Tammy & Phil have done an amazing job. I understand there are quiz nights, live music and other activities. This is well recommended and we have booked again for a night out in December....well worth a visit.

This pub recently changed hands yet again and it’s a huge improvement on the previous owners. They have had a refit and a clean up. The horrible smell in the bar area and men’s toilets has gone, as has the kiddies play area. It has now moved to a much better position. They have gone back to basics with the food which I thought was excellent value and reasonable quality though the portions were on the small side. There’s certainly more people eating here now. Beer prices were pretty average for this area. Found the staff and management to be very polite and helpful which is definitely an improvement on the old regime.

As the title says this feels like a pub in decline, we have visited a fair number of times in the past couple of years and during that time it has been very up and down but generally good. We visited between Christmas and the New Year and had intended to eat but as a result of the following decided not to. The 1st thing that hit you as you walked in was the smell, the place generally smelt of dope and there was a strong smell of vomit by the bar, the staff were surly and not very welcoming. The beer on the hand pump was starting to go sour, (although it was changed without question) and the choice of wines had declined from what was a reasonable but good value choice to what seemed to be cheap poor quality. The management company really need to get a grip of this place. We definatly won't rush back.

I'm so pleased to report that the disastrous "New Menu" which I moaned about previously has been ditched, along with the big banners on the front fence! They have now returned to a good value pub grub menu after, I presume, months of selling little or no food apart from breakfasts and carveries. Apart from those, which were fine, we stopped eating here but now we'll be back. (Off the record, we already have!). So, for a good value midweek meal The Bedes is now back in the frame.

I had chosen the carvery and she was excited to have some chicken and mash... the chef heard us talking and explained to us that there was no mash in the carvery but would make some just for us, my little niece then said and beans ... sure enough she brought out mash and beans at no extra charge. It was a great environment with soft play area for my niece which she loved, good food and it wasn’t too noisy for a Sunday afternoon. Staff are so friendly I would recommend this place to anybody.

Oh dear! After an earlier menu revamp to reflect the cheap and cheerful honest pub grub that is on offer, The Bedes has got it so wrong again!! (Not for the first time). They have a new menu with some seriously hiked prices and a few bargain basement ones thrown in for good measure. Camembert starter £8??, 8oz Rump £15.99?? We've just returned from having a quick economy meal, which we've had a few times from the last menu quite happily. I would have liked a steak but I'm not paying 16 quid for it in a place like this, so we settled for sausage ciabatta and a cheeseburger. the bulk of both meals was dry white bread. The sausage was almost burnt and should have been served with mustard sauce - it wasn't. Burger was OK apart from the dry white bun and a measly little bit of lettuce and tomato. Poor for £10 though. So come on Bedes/Swan Hospitality, you'll lose the all important food sales if this continues. This is my local pub and I am a regular customer, not a casual visitor.

A hidden gem, tucked away in North Baddersley. A carvery with a choice of small, standard or large. Good selection of meat and vegetables and a veggi option too. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the seats were comfy and the food was great value. Access good, with a suitable disabled loo (radar operated, but they hold a key behind the bar) a bit tired but large enough for a wheelchair and clean. We all enjoyed the food, we opted for standard plates which were plenty big enough. The beef and gammon were tender and the veg well cooked. The only complaint from us was about the roast potatoes which were not really proper roasties. A great visit we even stayed on for a game of pool.

A member of staff finally appeared behind the bar (the same staff member we spotted on arrival, smoking a cigarette in the car park). We helped ourselves to the "New Menu", which was not new at all, in fact it was the same menu as it was November 2016, when we called in for a weekday Carvery which no longer existed then or now, due to lack of customers no doubt! Took a look at the menu, took a look around the uninspiring surroundings and hastily left.

This pub has changed its concept ( no waitress or waiters) and its menu, for me it was a disaster, I am gluten free and had 3 choices, steak, gammon, egg and chips and jacket potato I do not eat steak or gammon so was left only with the choice of jacket potato, this arrived with the cheese melted all over it making it greasy and difficult to digest no garnish. My other guest had the chicken and gammon both over cooked and dry. The choice has greatly been reduced and the quality has gone down. My family have been eating at this pub since 2001, we will not go back or recommend. In fairness the staff were friendly and the Manager did offer us some money back and took on board our comments,

I visited with a friend on a Monday lunchtime. There was no evidence of the 'screaming children' mentioned in other reviews. Presumably this sometimes occurs at the week-end. It seems a bit unfair to give the restaurant a 1-star or 2-star review, just because some parents cannot control their children. Anyway, we were very happy with our lunch. I ordered a rump steak (rare) and it arrived perfectly cooked. A thick and tasty piece of rare steak with a very tasty pepper sauce. My colleague started with nachos (and chilli) and I can verify from a small taste that this was very good indeed. Something for me to order on a future visit. A man of large appetite, my friend continued with an all-day breakfast. Not to my taste, but it looked very good too. This pub offers four locally brewed real ales. The one I chose - Romsey Gold - was excellent and well served. So, there is nothing at all wrong with the pub/restaurant itself. The staff are very friendly and the food is delicious. Avoid Sunday lunch-times (or take a look through the door to assess the decibels first) and you will enjoy your visit.

Went here today as the weather had perked up. Was hoping for a nice relaxed and grown up atmosphere, what we got can only be described as being at a child's party, and not even a good one! Screaming wayward kids everywhere, Overpriced for what it is and the workers seem to just let anyone run riot in this place. The kids screaming was the worst, pubs are no place for children, perhaps for a family meal in the day but not in pitch black screaming and disrupting everyone else, not to mention they weren't being supervised by anyone which isn't good with the amount of weirdos about. We weren't the only ones getting annoyed by the kids screaming at the top of their lungs! If I wanted to listen to kids scream I'd go to a park!!! The food can only be described at best as average but this is made up for by the excellent quality and price of their real ales. They now only have the carvery on a Sunday. My main grouse with this pub is the positioning of the kiddies play area, right in the middle of the pub. Whilst we were there, there was about a dozen VERY NOISY young children running around the whole pub not just the play area. Meanwhile the parents were in the conservatory enjoying the peace and quiet away from the children. When I complained I was told very bluntly it is a family pub so live with it.Whilst I will continue to call in for a pint or two I certainly will not be eating here again until they do something about the play area.

OK, Guys, time for a reality check, please. I've just been served yet another pint of vinegar dressed up as Romsey Gold. This is happening more and more recently and is not acceptable these days with the Cask Marque quality setting the standards. There are increasing signs of cost cutting in the Bedes, too. With the scrapping of the loyalty scheme the food has become too expensive for what it is. There are many items which often are unavailable (presumably because they don't sell at that price). For example, who would pay 11 quid for a "pub" curry when you can get a proper Indian for that price? The Carvery is still mostly acceptable but the veg can get dried out when it's quiet. I enjoy a glass of Shiraz with my meal but £5.99? It was OK with the 10% discount but the bill soon adds up without it!15th May 2015 was a renaissance for this place, my local pub, but it's gone from "great" to "iffy". Please have a think about this. Cost cutting only drives business away. Please, for the sake of the business, the community and MY local!

My friends and I have been going here for many months, on Wednesdays, when OAPs got a carvery for £5.00. We always had a drink but never a dessert as it was too much for us. Sometimes other friends joined us. The conservatory is a lovely place to sit and eat. Then, a few weeks back, the price went up to £7.99, which included ice cream. It was a waste for us because we did not want ice cream but still had to pay for it. The quality went down too, with the roast potatos being greasy and tasting like they had been kept warm for too long (probably because there were not enough people there to eat them). Whereas it was always busy on a Wednesday, sometimes it was only us there. We have now stopped going. They have 'shot themselves in the foot'. It had been a really good place to eat but sadly not any more.

All in all, we liked this pub a lot- to be fair it doesn't look much from the outside, but give it a go, you'll be pleasantly surprised !

The food was wonderful. Fresh no frozen veg and as much yorkshires and stuffing as you wanted. The only downside for us as a couple was the lack of atmosphere and the amount of screaming children running around. I think it would be a briliiant place for families but for a couple wanting a quiet cosy meal probably not.

After a bad experience down the road, we were welcomed here with a smile and were served almost immediately. We had the good value 'carvery' lunch and were served at the table for more drinks and food. All the staff were pleasant and prices were absolutely fine. Its not a glamorous high class location but it is an honest, value-for-money, business who have friendly staff and a good range of drinks and tastey food for lunch.

We needed somewhere for 8 of us to eat on a Sunday and living locally had heard good things about the Bedes, thankfully all that we had heard were spot on.The staff were attentive and friendly, the food was good quality, well cooked and plentiful. But above all else they offer great value. Will certainly be returning soon.

Had lunch with my husband, son & grandson. A truly lovely meal and excellent friendly service. Nothing was too much for the waitress and cook. They adjusted the meals from the menu to cater for our tastes.

This is the second time I've had a carvery at the Bedes and it dosnt disappoint. I can honestly say it's the best carvery around. The meat is superbly cooked, the vegetables are fresh and you can have as many Yorkshire Puddings as you like! Excellent service and phenomenal value for money! I'm so glad that after all these years this excellent local pub finally has owners who know what they are doing. Good place for a pint and food place to take the family.

Went for Sunday roast today with family. Had not been in there since its refurbishment, but great atmosphere especially for families with small children in the day. A soft play zone kept our little one amused between courses. Carvey was exceptional value for money, fresh, tasty and the staff were very helpful. They have a great menu and have entertainment at the weekend which I think the husband and I will check out given the good time we had today. Incidentally wine choice was brilliant as were the beers. Husband really pleased they served local beer his favourite 'flack manor' being one of them. A much better option than our other local up the road!

Since the takeover and refurbishment of this local pub in May this year (2015) it has become a very popular and thriving establishment - a breath of fresh air after the stale old Bedes of recent years. There are lots of new faces as well as the regulars, so they are attracting custom from further afield and locals who have stayed away previously. The carvery is very good value, (we've had quite a few of them), and there is a good range of well kept ales, buffet breakfast at weekends, and free curry (for a short while) on Saturday nights, along with live music. Well done the new owners and staff! Keep up the good work

So glad a decent, friendly pub has come to North Baddesley. The carvery is so good, and our two very fussy children are catered for with no bother, thank you so much for that.

I was visiting my parents who live locally so thought we would pay a visit to the newly refurbished Bedes Lea. The new layout is comfortable and much more suited to a dining environment. We had the carvery which had a good selection of meats and vegetables.

my Kids who all live in NB suggested we eat here after they all enjoyed the menu a few weeks earlier. good choice..... we all had salads and they were fresh, generous in size and very tasty. we left as the carvery was being put out and that looked good too. friendly staff and some decent regular offers make the Bedes lea worth another visit again.

The Bede's Lea has been refurbed and re-opened and has fast become our local all over again. Over the last few years it had become a drinking pub only in our eyes. But the new owners have changed it completely from the new decor and kids play area to the menus and beers. We have enjoyed both the carvery (including the extra large, tray sized plate!) and the weekend breakfast. All exceptionally good value with opening offers and loyalty. Friendly management and staff along with walking distance to home make it a great village pub.

Portway Inn, was the best place for breakfats for my family and I. we use to go each week. Todday we were turned away and was told they no longer accept outside customers only residents only. I have taken a picture of each of these. There terms and conditions, there website, their menu and when you walk towards the reception entrance from car park, no where does it say residents only can get breakfast. what a waste of time and fuel. I am so disappointed.

My daughter and I found this cafe by accident. Here are our thoughts. 1. too small to allow dogs indoors. 2. could do with a bit of a refresh. The chair pads were stained and there were grease stains up the wall by our table. 3. toilet was very clean but on the first floor which meant climbing some very steep steps. Not disabled friendly. However my daughter who is vegetarian had a really good choice of foods and thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The young staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The coffee was delicious as was my hummus platter with Greek salad. The prices were good and I would highly recommend but I think it could be even better with a bit of a refurb. Didn't get to see the garden as it was too hot to sit outside but from the photos it looks really nice.

The food on offer was great, but no choice of real ales unless you like flack manor which I hate it's disgusting so cannot recommend.

Sadly this pub remains closed. Some work has been done on the building but there is no indication that it will reopen soon. Best to check before travelling. The nearest pub is the Black Horse at West Tytherley which has good reviews.
