The Bear offers a great atmosphere for couples, families and friends. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is excellent, especially the Sunday roast (vegan option is one of the best I’ve had in Bath). It shows loads of different sport, without the vibe of some other sporting pubs, and Ali is always happy to switch the TV to the rugby (even if it is to watch Bristol Bears!). We moved locally in the spring and this is a great local pub!

We had a family meal at the Bear in August and could not fault it. Today we went again for Sunday lunch and ordered the Sunday roast. Whilst the overall quality of the food was very good the three of us all noticed that the amount of roast beef was noticeably smaller than on our previous visit; and we all had some gristle which was difficult to cut without a steak knife. The restaurant was very full and it may be that portions were reduced accordingly. It should be said that service was very good and the staff were polite and personable as always.

A great place to get a proper old school full English breakfast. No pretense, no nonsense, no gluten free rubbish, no vegan crap just proper traditional food. Places like this need to be protected, there are too many gastro swanky snobby cafes popping up over Bath, it's great that this place is still going. And not an Avocado in sight.

We arrived on a very busy Saturday lunchtime and the staff were very polite and attentive. They gave us enough time to decide and took our drinks and food order with no problems. The food arrived very quickly and it was very fresh and hot. I thoroughly enjoyed the moo and blue pie, was a perfect balance of steak and Stilton. Great crispy fries which didn't sog up when the gravy was added. The only problem was that our waiter forgot to put one desert through, however I really admire the way he owned up and apologized and took full responsibility for it. It didn't effect our meal at all. The whole table thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal, with very pleasant and hard working honest staff. We will certainly be back. My one very small criticism is that a wider range of beer would be appreciated. But full marks!

We had arranged to meet our friends for a meal and they suggested the Bear. We hadn’t been in there for years and heard good things about it so we went. The decor is modern and a very warm friendly feeling as you walk in. The bar staff were very friendly and service was great. There was four of us and after looking at the brilliant menu we decided three of us would have the Bear burger with extra onion rings which were amazing and my wife had an 8oz sirloin steak. The steak was £21.50 which is well worth it for an amazing steak. The whole evening was brilliant. Look forward to coming again.

I hate to write this about our local pub but we both had very poor meals. I had a falafel burger which hardly tasted of chickpeas, had a sticky doughy and unpleasant texture and certainly didn't taste of falafel. I strongly suspect it was a low quality bought in catering burger. It was complemented with ok French fries and an inedible come slaw that had salt added for some strange reason. My partner had the chicken burger which she described as 'ok' but she also couldn't eat her salty come slaw.. Sadly we won't be eating here again and can't recommend it to our friends.

Volveremos a visitar pronto!

We spent a pleasant evening here drinking and awaiting the rest of our family, prior to having a meal here. It was interesting to watch the clientele change from those dropping in for a drink after work on a Friday night to those coming out for the evening. The lights were dimmed, fairy lights put on and the atmosphere subtly changed. We chose to stay in and sit on the settee but many were outside in the sort of beer garden (more an area). From the window we could just make out the sun setting over Bath. The only slight spoiler was that there were some people in the pub with a dog which kept barking. I don't see why we should have to put up with that. Most others took their dogs outside. Eventually, another customer, braver than us, went over and said something and the dog miraculously shut up.This selfish behaviour from its owners aside, we had a lovely evening; moving through to the main dining area when our family arrived where we all had a good meal. We all chose the goat's cheese and beetroot salad starter which was lovely. Then my sister and I had the excellent butternut squash risotto while our husbands chose meat and fish-based dishes. Desserts afterwards were also good although my chocolate ice cream was a bit too rich for me at that point. The bottle of Pinot Grigio we washed everything down with also helped enhance the experience. We enjoyed breakfast here on another day. I wish we had stayed here now.

This is just a couple of blocks from where we are staying. I had ordered a salad with salmon, but they had run out of salmon. So we both had fish and chips-they were awesome! Both the fish and the chips!! Pleasant surprise! I would have rated it a 4 if not for the lack of what I had originally wanted.

Just a small group, six in total, our fourth visit this year. Let’s start with the booking, it’s important to book, it helps the staff and is a great way to avoid disappointment. Booking made, and an allotted time given. In particular the roast beef is selected, assurances are given that if there are any problems then we will be contacted by phone. The party arrive and stand in line, obviously the time slot doesn’t always work, 15 minutes later we get our table. Oops small problem the Beef has gone finished none left but we can select an alternative, oops what happened to the phone call? Not to worry we will settle for what is available, a drink would be refreshing! Oops no service, not to worry we will go to the bar and order it ourselves. Drinks order taken, oops the waitress that took the order decides to take another order from a prospective client that had just appeared whilst we waited and waited. Drinks eventually served so we could return to our food.

As part of my partner's Significant Birthday celebrations we treated the four kids to a lunch at The Bear. Living close to the pub, we have seen it in various incarnations, but friends had recommended the current management's approach to wining & dining 7 customer service. We were not disappointed. Service could have been a bit quicker, but to be fair there was a bar full of rugby fans and a party from some company or other. Three of us had "posh burgers", two had steaks and one the Korean chicken. No complaints! Various desserts filled what remaining space there was!

I like the food and drink and general feel of the restaurant. They've a few children's toys too which is always helpful. Unfortunately it's let down by the fact that you can't order vegetables. The children's meals such as fish and chips are just that, no peas or anything healthy. We asked to order a side of veg but they didn't do any. Only coleslaw, which they said wasn't suitable for children. Some meals have vegetables incorporated but apparently the vegetables can't be sold as a side. We don't eat meat (do eat fish) and my son has a dairy allergy so we had no choice but to order him fish and chips with no veg. Not ideal in 2018 when we should be more aware of childhood obesity and the need to be encouraging healthy eating. I don't mind them having occasional chips and unhealthy food as a treat but I do mind not being able to combine this with anything healthy. A real shame because otherwise the food would be good.

Our room was spot on, with a balcony and walk in shower, with a comfortable bed. We were rear facing as well so no road noise, and despite being fully booked, including a hen party, had an undisturbed night's sleep. Bar staff all friendly and happy (which is unusual in my experience!). We didn't eat there in the evening but had drinks in the bar. Furniture, decor, atmosphere all good. We had breakfast before departing, which did take too long to arrive, but had we not had somewhere to be, maybe that wouldn't have been a problem. Highly recommended. As a vegetarian, I particularly recommend the wild mushroom croquettes with wild garlic sauce, which was really delicious, served with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and all the traditional Sunday roast vegetables and very good value at under £10. The carnivores all thoroughly enjoyed their pork, chicken and beef roast dinners and the wide variety of perfectly cooked accompanying vegetables - the red cabbage dish was especially good, and the roasted cauliflower. We were staying nearby and The Bear was recommended by a member of our hotel staff. The menu is not big, which in my opinion is a good sign that the food is fresh and there is not a bank of microwaves in the kitchen. We could have had scallops or a middle eastern dish from the specials menu and it was difficult to choose what to have. We had well-cooked sea bass with samphire and a warm potato salad from the main menu, then shared a gorgeous - and generous - sticky toffee pudding. The atmosphere is friendly and casual and the staff helpful and friendly.

One thing that cannot be denied is that the Bear do know how to reinvent themselves, this involves change, and for change to be successful you need good (great ) staff, and that seems to have been achieved, polite staff great atmosphere good food and all priced at good value for money.

My Girlfriend and I went here for our romantic valentines dinner while staying in Bath. The atmosphere was amazing - staff were friendly and welcoming, the venue was spacious and calming & the candles were a great touch.

Eaten here on two occasions. First breakfast, ordered eggs florentine. Arrived on a sweet tasting cheap muffin with hard eggs. Second occasion, sandwich for lunch - very small, very basic, poor quality and limp salad on side - at £7.50 very steep! Stick to the coffee only in future.

Visited the Bear Saturday night 28/1 as friends were staying here. Decided to eat as we had not been able to for most of the day so we promptly accosted a menu and ordered. 3 burgers and an ox cheek ragu soon followed and they were pretty decent, not great but still good. The burgers were a good size and taste and the ragu was really good. Few points I did pick up were the pasta on the ragu being slightly undercooked thus making it a little rubbery. Personally I found the boards for the burgers were all wrong and would work better if they were square or rectangular. Also no homemade chips, there cheaper to produce and such better quality compared to frozen. That being I'd happily eat there again and probably will as we live close by now. Though one place they really do need to improve is the bar and waiting staff. Lacklustre, pretty miserable, don't know the menu or kitchen operation too well so struggle with complicated orders, apathy in dealing with customers. Maybe it was a long day but a smile makes a difference. Good priced beer and wines are a good point given the competition in Bath. All in all a good place just needs that little touch more.

Went with friends for dinner on a Saturday night, they were busy but we had a reservation and were promptly seated. We orders starters and mains and then proceeded to wait over an hour for any food to arrive. When it did it was our main courses. When we said we hadn't had our starters yet the response yet was would we like our dinner in reverse...baffling when surely the obvious offer should have been so sorry we'll bring you your starters ASAP. By this point we were hungry and a bit fed up so we said fine, the mains which were then placed in front of us were cold. New ones arrived a few mins later and the waitress's offered is a free drink-didn't exactly make up for our experience and won't be going back again.

We dropped in on a Sunday and they'd run out of pizza dough but we settled in with a bottle of wine and they let us know when they'd made some more. Great pizza, yummy wine, good night :)

Stayed here for two nights. Free parking, big room, wonderful choices for breakfast and the friendliest staff you could ask for. Plus, the Gem bath ale they have on draught was one of the best pints I've had. We'll definitely be staying again. Thanks to all at the Bear that made our stay a great stay.

We concur with other reviewers: the staff make this quirky hotel - nothing is too much trouble & their friendly demeanour ensures that you feel at home. We stayed in Sand where the roll top bath gave the minimalist rooms a luxurious top note. Breakfasts were good & the dinner we had superb. Why not a 5? For us, just a little attention to detail was missing (water glasses in the room, hooks for towels, ensuring breakfast food was thoroughly cooked). However, we would certainly make The Bear our port of call again.

Situated on the end of bear flat on the south side of Bath this is a good place for a pub meal in friendly relaxed surroundings away from the very crowded city centre of Bath

Just returned from a wonderful short break to The Bear and was very impressed from start to finish, the welcome was fab the room was spacious and comfortable, and the restaurant served some marvellous food. The atmosphere in the restaurant / bar was alive every night and a joy to be amongst. We would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Bath as it's ideally located for all the amazing things bath has to offer.

Came here for a quick lunch, this was our first visit and we most definitely will not be coming back. we weren't greeted by any member of staff and when we had been greeted, the staff member was very rude and arrogant. When taking our order the man did not ask us if we wanted any drinks, instead he rudely got his co-worker to come and take our drinks order.

What a wonderful welcome. Fantastic bar/ restaurant. The bar manager took time to explained the menu and made us feel right at home. My husband said his steak we the best he had in years. It was served with a delightful crab and lobster butter. I had the mussels which did not disappoint. Glad we decided to eat here and not walk into central Bath. Throughly recommend this place!!

We ended up eating here by chance - drawn in by the menu, albeit slightly trepidatious over how few people there were on a Saturday lunchtime... All the food turned out to be inspired, delicious, and presented well. Two meat-eaters, 1 vegetarian and 1 vegan all well catered for, including a tasty curry and a generous scotch egg starter. The staff were brilliant, great service! Very glad we ate here!

We remember this place when it was pickled eggs and pork scratching! We went in not quite knowing what to expect and it was a revelation. Great food - interesting variations on "standards" , well presented but in decent portion sizes. Great flavours. I had a sweet potato curry which was superb as was the rest of the food. Being a Saturday night it was busy but staff were attentive and enthusiastic with time for everyone and good knowledge of the menu and the beers on offer. All in a great restaurant/pub and worth a visit.

Early morning caffeine was needed and this was very close to my hotel. Ordered a latte and a muffin. Latte was beautiful and tasted good. Muffin was just okay.

Lovely little pub. If you are into rock/alternative music definitely the place to go. I received two! complements on my Warhammer 40k jacket, one of which was from a staff member (possibly the landlord), so if you're a Warhammer fan, also a good place to go. Good selection of beers on tap. Will serve jagerbombs at a push, but a bit DIY. £18 for a Peroni and two jagerbombs as bought as two Jager shots plus a can of Red Bull. Did the job however. Toilets are down a spiral staircase into the basement, not for the faint hearted. Good atmosphere and good music, would definitely go again if in the area.

I'm a frequent visitor to bristol airport, as my partner travels for work, so I'm often there to wait for his flights to come in. Unfortunately, there are very few options for anywhere to sit while waiting, other than cafe ritazza. Because of this, the cafe area is always busy, and all the regular/normal seating is always taken, so I have to try get my 50+yo arthritic, short arse up one one of their many Eiffel tower height stools, and if that's not hard enough, the darn things also swivel! No wonder all the other seating is always taken, and all these 'make yourself look like an ungainly idiot' seats are always free in huge numbers. Please please please cafe ritazza, rethink your seating options. Not everyone is an 8ft tall gymnasts.

I’m a travelling Australian and got excited about some home-style food but this was so bad. The rice clumped together like it was days old, the kale was discoloured and the serving size was pitiful. Could have made something much better myself for far less than the £15 I paid for this and a mediocre chai. Service wasn’t even friendly. I’m only giving it 2 stars because I had a juice there a few days ago and it was pretty decent - otherwise it would have been a one. And - on the plus side it didn’t taste terrible but the rice was a bit suss.
