Not visited here for approx 8/10 ys; still same carpet and decor. Looks tidy and clean though but one slight moan - main door to lounge bar/ restaurant area, also looks like reception area for hotel! Paint the door, looks very poor aesthetically, poor first impression, quick/cheap to do. Would refresh all green walls with white/off white to freshen it, rather than the apple green! That said for a Sunday lunch out, good lunch/ pork, well cooked generally; usual mini moan with most pubs, brown your cauliflower cheese… quick blow torch if no time for oven/grill; never understand why it’s left without! Hope being constructive.

The pub is looking splendid at the moment with hanging baskets and tubs of flowers making it a really warm and welcoming feel. Wonderful friendly lunch visit and certainly one we will be doing again. We walked off the pudding hiking home!

Iv had many meals here and they have always have been excellent so I was disappointed that the Christmas lunch I took friends to was not up to scratch. The starters were not very generous and the main courses were a let down, the beef was over cooked and dry and the salmon was dry too and the sauce a bit tasteless, the vegetables had been kept hot and were a bit over cooked. The puddings were good and the staff as usual were very attentive and helpful and nothing was too much trouble, making sure we all had what we wanted. Shall go back as I’m sure it was only a blip but I was embarrassed having recommended the venue.

I would not recommend at all. Service was awful, no one came to check on us and had to ask for drinks. Our starters were cold and one was still frozen, as no one came to check we took the starter back to the kitchen and made the chef aware, to be met with ‘oh sh*t sorry’. Portion sizes were tiny for the prices, peas rock solid and inedible, lettuce leaves were brown and to top it off the table next to us had mouldy bread. It really does baffle me how simple things like service and checking if food is out of date or properly cooked is over looked as it’s the main things a restaurant provides! The only redeeming thing was the dessert, but who can go wrong with a microwave. Will not be returning.

The pub looks great on its website. Well appointed rooms and lovely dining area. Regretfully, the photos on the website must be 20 years old so as disappointing as a first date from a dodgy online profile. Our room was drab, old drapes, a Velux with a generous helping of mould around the frame plus a broken blind, a shower that was either scalding hot or freezing cold and a TV that Noah would have used for a weather forecast. The rear fire door has a large hole covered by a bit of plywood. The food's fine and the young ladies behind the bar are really friendly & helpful. We had breakfast cooked by the owner who was fresh from gardening so was wearing grubby clothing. Christmas themed pictures on the wall of the dimly (grey) lit and tired dining room walls. A dog that barks at you when you walk in until apparently you have to say "I'm your friend". It's a shame as this could be a really great pub but I feel as it's the only one for quite a distance, it trades on its reputation - and it's woefully out of date website.

We stopped here for some tea at the weekend on the way back from Cardiff. The place it situated a couple of miles off junction 12 of M5 up a dead end road behind the primary school. When we arrived there the driveway was full of cars and loads of people standing outside with their vapes. There is a hotel attached to this place with a lovely little restaurant but we ate in the bar. We ordered some scampi and fries for the little un, mum had faggots and I had a plate of mixed meat salad. When the food came out the scamp was it's normal self but the faggots were home made complete with mash that was definitely not lumpy. The salad was very well presented and was the best I'd seen for years. Even the ham and beef were cut from the bone and and the little bread roll that came with it was warm to touch. It wasn't expensive either and the experience was a very pleasant detour. Definitely worth another visit in the future.

When you phone up a pub at short notice and ask if they can accommodate for Sunday Lunch, a group of walkers and 13 dogs, you might expect a less than enthusiastic response. Not at the Haresfield Beacon & Railway Hotel. After an initial enthusiastic and helpful response from Fiona, I was phoned back by the house manager Gareth, who welcomed our arrival. Result! We had a watering hole and somewhere to eat at least but the huge bonus was that their Sunday lunch was just Premier League! On arrival, I was greeted by smiling, attentive and enthusiastic staff and there was a good selection of real ales available and good wines too. Here's a house that knows how to look after its beer and my pint was just fabulous. We ordered Sunday lunch, with a choice of Beef, Lamb, Pork or Turkey with vegetarian options available too.My meal arrived and I was gob-smacked (and believe me I have high expectations). My beautifully cooked and generous roast lamb was accompanied by... (wait for it!), roast potatoes, new potatoes, roast parsnip, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, sprouts, brocolli, cabbage, cauliflower cheese, stuffing, sausage and gravy to die for. All this (and beautifully cooked too) for just £9.95!!!!!Just exceptional and our party enjoyed every scrap, as did our accompanying dogs, we devoured anything left over.I have to say, that I'm pretty hard to please but could not fault any aspect of The Haresfield Inn and its staff.Well done Gareth and your team, you have a pub/hotel, location, providing quality food and service with a smile, which you and your team should be justifibaly proud of.We'll be back and for readers of this post, I recommend that you visit soon!

Had Sunday lunch here recently. The bar woman was clearly stressed out and we ended up seating ourselves. Not sure if they do table service but nobody came so eventually ordered at the bar. I asked a waitress whether the broccoli bake had potato in it and she said no, but when it came it did and I’d have ordered something else if I’d known. Most of the food is obviously aunt bessies stuff and my companions’ meat was dry and chewy resulting in them leaving some. My potatoes were a little hard also. They have 20 desserts to choose from so I was pleased with the variety at least, they were ok except that the tirimasu was served with some weird lemon flavour ice cream, they claimed they don’t do lemon ice cream so maybe the cream in it was off?! Wouldn’t rush back...

But the food was really disappointing I had hunters chicken and it had hardly any BBQ sauce so had to ask for more but was cold and the veg was really hard the baby potatoes seemed to be old. My friend had lasagne garlic bread chips and salad, the chips where still hard and the lasagne had inches of grease round the edge. The garlic bread was soggy. We did complain but only about the one meal as didn't want to make much of a scene. The bar man was lovely and was really professional about the situation and dealt with it. The portions were really generous with a terrific variety of freshly steamed veg (broccoli, carrots, cabbage, peas, and sprouts), plus roast parsnips, a bowl of gorgeous cauliflower cheese, and a perfect Yorkshire pudd as well. And the gravy ... oh the gravy! Genuine traditional meat-stock gravy - again in plentiful supply. We ended up using our desert spoons to 'drink' the last dregs like soup! Splendid. The owners, Steve & Wendy, were really friendly and welcoming, as indeed were all the staff. We have personally recommended this outstanding traditional roast dinner to numerous people who live in the locale and we will absolutely be back next time we are in the area. Following my step-father’s funeral at St Peter’s Church Haresfield late on Friday afternoon, we received a very friendly and warm welcome and shown through to the private restaurant area. The venue was perfect for our party of 30 - being neither too big nor too small. We had chosen to have the modestly priced buffet and this was pleasingly presented. There was a wide selection of sandwiches, tasty quiche and sausage-rolls, salad and nibbles etc as well as hot finger food. There was a lovely big bowl of piping hot chips, which were very welcome with it being a bitterly cold afternoon! There was cake, biscuits and mints and unlimited tea and coffee laid out for us to help ourselves, and a bar available for those who fancied something stronger. We couldn’t be sure of numbers in advance but Steve, who took our booking, assured us that they could easily cater for more once we arrived if need be. As it was the buffet (catering for 30) was plentiful and despite everyone tucking in well, there was quite a bit of food left over which was packed up and given to us to take home. All the staff were cheerful, polite, friendly and attentive but unobtrusive and we would not hesitate recommending the Beacon as a venue for a similar gathering. Everyone we spoke to - from our initial phone enquiry through to paying the bill afterwards - were very pleasant and kind. We look forward to visiting again for a meal sometime as we’ve heard plenty of good things about their food!

The food and service was excellent as was the wine selection. We are now regular visitors now and I'm glad it's off the beaten track and unspoilt like so many other local establishments.

Called on spec at lunchtime having made our way off the motorway going South, from which this pub was directed, and it proved a good choice.Quite a decent sized menu, and food was served with lots of fresh veg. - more than we could eat, and we like our veg!Service was pleasant and helpful, including managing a person with diabetes without fuss. Quite quiet when we called, but it is obviously a 'locals' place with a bit of atmosphere, spotlessly clean and comfortable.

I spent last Friday night with my six year old son at the Beacon. We had a lovely meal and great live music in a real traditional family owned pub. I can recommend it to anyone . The rooms are very comfortable and the welcome and service are second to none.

My husband and my parents came here for an evening meal after deciding against a more local chain pub to us that was jam packed due to a quiz! How pleased were we that we came across this gem! The selection of food on the menu was great. The portions were very generous and the meals all went down fantastically. We will definitely be back.

lovely 'proper' pub which serves food. A mix of regular locals, and visitors. I am now going to be a 'local', and i'm glad this is a nice pub. Its on a no-thru road with a large car park area. in the summer they sometimes have bouncy castle out for the kids. They do catering for larger parties/christenings/parties etc in the separate restaurant area. the bar has lots of different ales which is great to see. The food has always been fine when i've eaten there. the service is good, and even if the bar area is full of locals they will always see you. after school time people take their kids down for a quick drink and in the early evenings. they are child friendly and it is a quiet enough location that the kids can run to and from the play area /grassy area at the back. Theres outdoor seating around the building - i imagine it would be great for train spotters as it'd right on the train line to Gloucester.

Good food, well cooked, friendly service. Well stocked bar with real ale choices. Most pubs today are becoming restaurants and no longer pubs selling food. This is traditional pub environment with locals and visitors mixing in a friendly manner.

We have visited 2 Saturday afternoons in a row this month! We always receive a warm welcome and our lunch has been delicious, generous and fantastic value for money. The people who run The Beacon should be proud they are so attentive to their customers, the staff always greet you with a smile. The location let's it down as there is no passing traffic but I'd recommend to anyone to find this hidden gem and pay them a visit.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for a weekend whilst attending a wedding. Upon arriving we were welcomed by Steve and Wendy and made to feel at home. Our stay was really lovely, we had a large room and an ensuite with a delicious full English breakfast to look forward to every morning. We in fact felt so much at home we extended our stay for another night! We'd both highly recommend The Beacon Inn for both a short or long stay and we'll definitly be going back.

This was my first outing here and definitely will not be the last. Has a lovely roast or pork with pate to start, as on a Wednesday they do a deal on a roast dinner where you get a starter or desert for nothing. Very friendly owners and staff. Keep up the good work as I'll be back.

We booked the venue for my Partners Birthday party 7th February for 30 people. The buffet food was lovely, a huge choice of salads, cooked meats, a whole salmon, ribs etc and a selection of delicious desserts/cheese and biscuits. For the children there was an alternative choice from the children's menu, sausage, chips and beans was just one. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and we had the room from 12.30 onwards. The staff were excellent as were Steve and Wendy the owners, nothing was too much trouble. For a local family pub it is excellent and well worth a visit.

Not in the sense of being for yuppies, but in the way it's now run.We went in a party of 30 before Xmas, pre-ordered meals. Inevitably, some had forgotten what they ordered and when the staff came around with the dishes, no one spoke up. If I were serving, that would drive me mad. There was even one special diet order, which the customer had apparently forgotten. But the staff were so professional, they were able to sort out who had ordered what, and the service was quick, smooth, unobtrusive, even though we were in the skittle alley and they also had tables to run in the normal restaurant on the other side of the pub.Trio of fish, turkey & trimmings with many vegetables, Xmas pud. The usual, you might think. Yes, but the fish was presented well with several slices of brown bread, smoked mackerel, smoked salmon, prawns and some salad; then there was plenty of turkey, with broccoli, peas, cabbage, carrots, brussels, parsnips, roast and boiled pots, and cauliflower cheese, and best of all lashings of gravy in a jug, followed by a decent piece of Xmas pud with custard. Although I did slightly wish I'd ordered the melting chocolate pudding. Definitely a cut above the normal Xmas presentation. What was that song... 'I wish it could be Christmas every day'.Such a good pub now. Oh, and the blonde battleaxe has been axed, phew.

We visited this place as it was a reasonable distance from the M5 on our way back from holiday. The beacon is very out the way and in a gorgeous location, we were greeted as soon as we walked in by a nice lady, very welcoming. Very nice food, good portion for the price! And the beer was great :) girl did very well as she was on her own, will more than likely revisit on my next passing down the M5 J12 I think

I have been to The Beacon many times over the years because it is in a convenient location for meeting family. It has changed hands many times, too. I have had 3 visits under the present owners and my impression is that it is improving somewhat compared with the last lot of owners, although the menu is similar and the food is still hit or miss. The range of drinks is now very good, with a wide variety of beers and local cider on tap as well as bottled. Based on my 2 visits last month, I would say that Sunday lunch is better than a midweek dinner. The carvery offers a choice of beef, lamb, pork, turkey or nut roast and all vegetables are fresh, not frozen. Yorkshire pudding comes with each meal, and there are roasted parsnips and potatoes. My group had beef (OK but a bit overcooked- I like it pink in the middle, but this is the UK after all!), lamb (good), turkey (good, not too dry) and nut roast (pronounced OK but not brilliant). The fresh veg was also overcooked, UK-style (cabbage, carrots, broccoli). On the whole, however, it was a big plateful and, with a tasty gravy and the addition of mustard, horseradish, mint sauce etc. quite satisfying. The desserts we tried were good and tasted homemade- lemon cheesecake and lemon meringue. I would say that it was good value for money and made for a pleasant family Sunday, with a cosy dining room or choice of outdoor seating in good weather. Service was brisk, friendly and attentive and there were enough staff members to cover all the tables. The mid-week dinner, however, was more disappointing. We had the salmon in white wine sauce , gammon steak and ribs. Both ribs and gammon came with mountains of (probably frozen) mediocre chips, and the ubiquitous frozen peas, which I managed to exchange for salad. My ribs were huge but fairly tasteless (also probably frozen) and the industrial BBQ sauce covering them tasted of MSG. My dining companions did not complain about their meals but they looked to be of the same DIY construction (take frozen protein choice, defrost, cook, add some kind of potato and frozen peas or other vegetables and pile on plate). Large portions but relatively tasteless. We did not try any of the more complex dishes available such as Chilli con Carne or Thai Curry, so I do not know whether these would be home made or not although I suspect not.I was also very disappointed on this visit to be charged for soda water from the soda fountain. This is the first time in my life I have been charged for soda in a pub. Maybe they felt the fact that they threw a bit of lemon into it justified the charge. The service was rather slow and there was only one waitress trying to cover several tables. She did her best but seemed rather overstretched at times. This is a good place for a family visit because of the pleasant location, and the interior and toilets seem to have had a bit of a makeover, which is an improvement. Food is plentiful but just don't expect gourmet fare. Average to good pub grub, I would say.

We went for lunch on a recommendation and weren't disappointed. Food was all home made and fresh really well cooked and delicious. Usually it's all off Brakes catering list. Can't praise it enough. If you don't like this food you don't know what good food is.....chef was friendly waitress was attentive and speedy, and having run a catering firm I am not easily impressed. Will be going again soon.... Well done all of you.

I visited with a large group, we had preordered our food which should have ensured all food was available but there was still dessert which had to be changed. My salmon with prawns meal, the salmon was over cooked as was my husbands gammon. The waiting staff were young and inexperienced but pleasant. It is a place for a run of the mill meal not for a special night out.

Very disappointed. Landlord moaned he was too busy. We had booked a table but were hastily shown to the only table which was not laid up when we arrived (which felt like it was in the foyer of the restaurant - which I refused to sit at). Then told if we sat at another table we would have to leave by 7.45pm. I had starter of breaded mushrooms - mediocre - served with white sliced bread. Yuk. Poor quality and tasteless jumbo cod & chips. Huge portions but not good. Felt rushed. Certainly won't rush back.

We came here for Sunday Lunch and were not disappointed - very friendly welcome and great service the staff were very attentive - they have had a recent refurb and it is lovely the bar area is bright with plenty of seating and a great selection of real ales and ciders. The Lunch was great and plenty of it there was lots of meat on each plate, no-one in our party had any cause for complaint, the serving staff were bright, friendly and as I said very attentive nothing was too much trouble. The menu was good tradional fare with some lovely sounding meals including a T-bone steak, there was also a lunch/barfood menu which also looked good.I would recommend giving this lovely country pub a visit I will certainly be returning - highly recommend
