Had a lovely early evening meal at this restaurant. We both had gammon steak with chips and mixed veg.,peas, swede, red cabbage and broccoli. The barmaid was very pleasant. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was due to the service being a bit slow, though they did apologize.I would definitely go back.

We came to the pub for lunch on arriving in Wolsingham as we couldn’t check in at our cottage until later. Lovely staff, dog friendly and a lovely menu. We were all pleasantly surprised by the food, home cooked and a good variety on the menu. Thai chicken curry and chocolate fondant was amazing! So good we came back for Sunday lunch the next day (I would book a table as it was full), will definitely return next time we are in the area. Thank you for the lovely food and hospitality.

Another perfect meal at one of our local pubs in Wolsingham . Our food was perfect and definitely a huge step up from typical pub grub. We had Moroccan lamb and a venison dish. Both tasted perfect and were presented beautifully - extra side vegetables also lovely. I finished with a lemon posset which was delicious and just enough to satisfy without overdoing it . The service was lovely and the price was amazing for such brilliant food. I would definitely recommend everyone to come and sample the excellent food and hospitality. Can't wait for my next visit!

We had a perfect , delicious , home-cooked meal - it was the best food we've eaten in Wolsingham for a very long time. It was a Moroccan lamb with rice and home made bread. We asked for extra spiciness and it was just right. I had a lemon posset ( home-made again, by Amanda ) it was gorgeous with meringue base too. We had a bottle of Prosecco and a few pints of excellent real ale - we sat in the cosy and friendly lounge-bar with our dog. Fantastic value all for £45. I would highly recommend anyone to have a meal at the Bay Horse in Wolsingham.

Staying at a Holiday Cottage nearby we booked for Sunday Lunch. It made our holiday to be served such excellent food. The beef was so tender and the vegetables very colourful it made my mouth water.I couldn't resist a desert which was equally delicious Ginger and Rhubarb Crumble which melted in the mouth .We booked to eat again and were equally impressed certainly a place to recommend.

We had booked 2 rooms at this hotel on booking.com for one night. When we arrived they said "We didn't know which night you were coming, the manager is away." At dinner that night most of the items on the menu were not available and after many profuse apologies by the barman we were eventually served a poorly cooked meal. When we appeared at the appointed time next morning, no one was around . Eventually, someone appeared and "rustled up" a cooked meal although most of the menu items were not available As we left, another member of staff appeared and asked "How long are you staying?". There was something very much wrong at this hotel, hence my title.

When we arrived at the pub we were greeted by a very friendly receptionist/bar staff and shown to our room. The stairs to the bedrooms were quite steep for anyone that suffers from knee problems. The corridors were lit on a timer which was great for saving electricity by found myself in the dark a few times fumbling to find the switch panel. The room itself was very nice, shabby look, with a very good ensuite The only down on this room was the floor boards they should have been replaced when the refurbishment was carried out as the whole room creaked (which caused me to laugh each visit to the bathroom)

Oh dear where do I start........ upon arrival at the Bay horse hotel to be told no knowledge of our booking (first problem) we were then shown to a room at the back of hotel (problem 2) I had already emailed request of room at front with balcony, still waiting for reply. however got room sorted after short wait (take advantage of bar)The room big spacious, comfortable bed, but only luke warm water for the bath luckily we had shower aswell (problem 3) Having read reviews we decided to try the restaurant as we were only booked for one night stay .........what a pity (problem 4 ) my wife ordered the " surf and turf "and I opted for the " dandy parmo" after a short wait the waitress then caught my wife's attention on the way to the toilet to inform her the butcher had forgotten to deliver the steak that day so can she choose something else. poor excuse has produce was supposed to be sourced locally......onto my choice the chicken was very dry with the breadcrumbs over crisped (burnt) the twice cooked chips were all scrap ends, so the meal I would say was uneatable. The annoying thing being having nice background music being drowned out by music coming from the kitchen with the chef trying to sing painfully along, totally unprofessional . Never mind off out to enjoy wolsingham there is always breakfast to save the stay.(problem5) we both went for full English........YIKES.....sausages small misshaped tasteless and burnt black, two rasher's of bacon like cardboard and fused together ended up eating the poached eggs ,tasting of vinegar so unfortunately the breakfast did not save the stay. Having now deciding to tell the waitress/ manageress of our disappointment with this excuse of a breakfast only to get a verbal apology and a promise of " I will have a word with the chef" but still charged £ 4.95 each for the pleasure. Unfortunatley we will not be coming back any time soon

Budget hotel run by friendly people who don't know how to run a hotel. Room was okay but could have done with a deep clean. Bathroom spacious. We stayed 3 nights and the room was not serviced at all during our stay. I asked for fresh towels when we got back to our room at about 6pm on the third day and did ask if they serviced rooms to which the response was "yes, after 2 nights" although we had already been there for 2 nights. I was looking forward to breakfast especially as the menu stated "award winning sausages". I can't begin to imagine the sort of award they would have received as they were small, thin, overcooked and not that nice but the rest of the breakfast was quite good apart from the final morning when we ordered the "Yankee doodle dandy" which included pancakes. After waiting 30 minutes we were curious as to the progress of our order as we were the only customers! Apparently the "chef" couldn't manage to cook pancakes without them sticking to the pan so we told then to forget the pancakes and just bring out the rest. 2 of the fried eggs were rock hard, the bacon was overcooked as were the sausages but the toast was lovely. The manager/owner/waiter then gave us a hard luck story and "could only apologise"! I honestly believe they don't know how to cater for guests. A hotel that doesn't change towels, doesn't replenish toiletries or tea and coffee and a chef who can't cook a decent breakfast. The only thing I'm pleased about is that we didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening. They do allow dogs which us the main reason I chose to stay there.

The food here is wonderful. We started with the sharing platter which was huge and enough for our meal really. I had fish and it was in the best light batter ever, really good and tasty even though cod doesn't have a lot of flavour. My husband had Parmo and couldn't eat it all so they gave the rest to take home. The chef Sean is very good and I would recommend this food to anyone.

Sarah is one of the nicest people I have met and treated us as if we were friends rather than guests. The rooms are comfortable, clean and ideal as a base for a weekend away. The food is outstanding, the chefs really are incredible. However be prepared the portions are HUGE like Desperate Dan's dinners. I would be shocked if anyone left the restaurant hungry.

Following a morning walk with friends from Wolsingham around the Tunstall Reservoir, we called at the Bay Horse for lunch. We were quickly served drinks and had our lunch orders taken by a very efficient barmaid. The menu had something for everyone from a bar snack to a full restaurant meal. When served the food was excellent and enjoyed by all. Although the place was quiet it was welcoming and well kept, an ideal place to visit after a morning walk.

We have been many many times and always enjoyed the food and got on so well with the owners always felt comfortable here.decided to go today for Sunday lunch only to be informed new owners have taken over, the staff seemed very friendly the owner came roud to say hello the chef came to talk to me as im vegetarian and said he would do me a lunch with no meat,I must be honest and say when it came to the table I was shocked I got one piece of broccoli one pudding some small roast potatoes and carrots in some reasaurants they put a small amount on your plate and the rest comes in dishes for you to help yourself so when I saw what was there I thought this could be the same but unfortunately no more food came there was no sauces offered.my husband got the pork he said the taist of the food was nice but the tiny portions was not good and he was upset that as I had no meat I got the same amount of veg as him most places we go to give plenty of veg as what else is there for me to eat.yes they have just taken over but the owner as another pub so I would expect better,I could have done better and cheaper myself.they charged us £23 for 2 dinners and 2 cokes.I was disappointed that my vegetarian lunch if you can call it that was the same price as my husbands.im all for giving people a chance but not a good start and I had to spend more money and go and get something to eat on the way home.there is lots of nicer places and cheaper to eat and they mixed the bills up and tried to charge us £42.they need put more food on the plate or send out dishes with veg in on the table and dishes with sauces or I cant see many people returning.sad to see the old owners have moved on looks like will have to find somewere else now

We heard the pub had been in new hands for a few months and they were doing very well, as a regular passer by to the village and have tried many other food places in wolsingham I though we'd have a lunch there, I wish I hadn't! We were greeted by a lovely red headed girl (only good thing about the place) and seated in quite a dark room that was freezing cold, I'm sure it was warmer outside! It took quite a long time for our food to arrive and it didn't look as it was described on the menu, the pasta carbonara was far too salty so that got left and the burgers we ordered in sure we're more gristle than actual meat and the wine was expensive for what it was...I don't know if this is normal for here but we will defiantly not be returning again.

This was our third visit within a couple of months. My wife's slow roast pork had the texture of rhinoceros and my salmon was suspiciously similar to trout. The service has been slow on each occasion we've been, but we've justified that by acknowledging what has been good food. There's no reason for us to go again, there are better places closer to home.

If you know the Bay Horse, you'll realise that it has gradually deteriorated over the past few years for reasons unknown. HOWEVER, the new tenants have certainly breathed new life into the place. This is the second time we've been in the last couple of weeks and the food has improved dramatically from what it was not so long ago. Last time we were here I had a Madras curry, maybe not as spicy hot as it could have been, but full if flavour, and my wife had a steak and ale pie. this time we had a sharing platter starter (so big we almost cancelled the main course!) and scampi and sirloin steak, both cooked to perfection. All of the food here has a genuine home cooked feel to it and the quality of the produce is good too. The wine by the glass is also quaffable. The only criticism I would have is that the service is a little on the slow side. This could be due to the size of the kitchen which is on view and looks quite small and so would limit production. The good thing was that when the food came it was obviously freshly cooked. We'll go again.

We have used the Bay Horse over the years to try and support a local amenity , after years of being steadily run down to the point where we and others in the village just refused to go , last year a hard working family took it on and all seemed well.Unfortunately the place has changed hands again and after visiting 2weeks ago I can confirm this is the worst place I have ever reviewed. It took an hour for the starters to come and when they did they were not as described on the menu, we were given the excuse they had been busy and had ran out of ciabatta so had used those 1/2 cooked bread buns, the black pudding en croute also came served on a bread bun & looked disgusting with oxo gravy poured on top, 3 out of 5 mains were not as described so we opted to send the lot back, the chef was too busy to come to our table to explain, so one the kitchen staff came who just kept saying we have been busy- I pointed out if something runs out it should be taken off the menu or the customer informed of the available dishes, these people need to understand reputations are hard earned & so easily lost, Wolsingjam is a close knit community & word soon gets around. I don't expect the present owners will last long working to these low standards

I last reviewed this place in 2019 where my main issue was poor service and would you believe it things haven't changed. Service today was non existent. We were seated for over 10 minutes .... Not even a greeting. Front of house totally disorganised. It's a wonder the floor covering wasn't worn out because of the too-ing and fro-ing which never seemed to produce anything. This service is the worst I've experienced anywhere.. Cone on.... Get a grip !

Parking is plenty and is a one way system, so don't try to get to the front out of laziness or you could get stuck during busier times and end up having to go back out and round into the main dual carriage way and roundabout if there is too much traffic. The parking is free and it is a gravel car park . As you enter there is a sign to wait to be seated, but don't wait if there are plenty of seats, as you'll be there forever. I think the sign should be put away during quiet times and brought out in busier times. Once seated it's easy to order, choose what you want from the menu and go to the counter (remember what your table number is). Massive cake/sweet selection at the till area so I suggest having a look there as well for sure! At first glance £4(something) for a Melba is a bit much but then when you see the size of it, it's fair. Delicious too! They have take away boxes as well, yum! The last time I went I tried the hot beef bap and it was really good, no chewy, gristle or fatty bits in the meat at all. Spot on. Time before was the cheese pie which I absolutely loved (my lactose intolerant body however rejected it, but was still worth it and I'll do it again NGL). The majority of the staff are lovely, I've never felt anyone has been rude (even when they seemed to be having a crappy and busy day). Have been a few times now and definitely will go again. Edit: it's also (well behaved) dog friendly.

A hidden gem of a pub. We were recommended by a friend to seek out this place just off the main road between the Eden Arms Roundabout and Newton Aycliffe. Good friendly staff. Food was lovely .Little Jill had the Pie of the day, Chicken and Ham, I had the Gammon. Both were really lovely. The only gripe i had was the overflowing wall mounted cigarette bin at the main door it was unsightly and off putting to us non smokers. Maybe move it or empty it more often. Only a little gripe and will not put us off returning.
