I have been today for a facial and massage and the treatments were amazing! Staff all lovely, friendly and welcoming. The Spa is undergoing a major refurb so it's a building site. I was told about this in advance tbf but I had a voucher which was about to expire so had to use it before work completed. It's dusty and well, a building site! No hand towels in toilet. Saying that the treatment rooms are clean and functioning but just didn't feel I got the whole relaxing ambiance you would expect. Maybe discounted prices should be offered at this time? I still had to pay £30 on-top of my £100 voucher. Treatments and staff are amazing though and can't fault them.

Stayed at The Morritt, with our dog, to break the journey from Surrey to a family Christmas in Scotland, and again on the return trip home. The hotel is dog-friendly, our superoir room in the annex was large and comfortable, and the staff were very helpful and looked after us well. The location was perfect for our purposes, being very close to the A66 (but not suffering from road noise) and with an off-lead dog walk only a couple of minutes walk away. We’ll definitely stay here again on our next trip to Scotland.

I came here with a group of 12 for the Christmas party night, including a three course meal, Robbie Williams tribute singer and DJ. I had never been here before but I was very impressed overall. The food was delicious, the Morritt catered to my food allergies. Food was hot and good size portions. The Robbie Williams act was alright, nothing amazing but it was a good laugh and nice to sing along and dance. The DJ was also good. The venue was decorated nicely and staff were very helpful and friendly. I had a fabulous night and would not hesitate to go again for one of these events. Thank you Morritt.

12 months ago it was average, but priced accordingly. Now it is very expensive and very poor. £22 for a Sunday lunch is perfectly acceptable if the quality and standards are top notch. Unfortunately on this visit, they were only just worthy of poor. Great service, poorly executed, overpriced food. Sign of the times I guess. Yet another local placed on the red list. Shame. Disappointed.

Just returned from my first ever spa day including an overnight stay with a very dear lifelong friend that I don't see often but what a lovely experience we both had. Beautiful location and very peaceful with lots of wildlife around the grounds. Every single member of staff we came across between the hotel and the spa were fantastic and couldn't do enough for us. Everyone was friendly and professional and nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing and portion sizes were VERY generous! Being my first spa experience I can't really compare with anywhere else but it certainly helped me unwind. The spa facilities were clean and the treatments were very relaxing. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back!

Stopped off at the Morrit Arms for Sunday lunch on the way home from Cumbria. First impressions of the dining room seemed good. However Service to take us to our booked table was extremely slow. It appeared there was only one young server in attendance. When the two meals arrived, both were warm, rather than hot. My beef was just slices of fat and gristle and the vegetables were not cooked. I was unable to cut the cauliflower with the knife. I asked the waitress to ask the chef to try and cut the vegetables with the same knife when the plates were taken away. We received no feedback even when we asked the waitress. We then waited an eternal time to receive our desert. We were then asked to go through to another room to pay our bill. We were not asked how it was, but offered our thoughts which simply fell on deaf ears. They were not interested. I will not go again.

Inedible fish and chips, very small fish, horrendously overdone chips, with a nasty fatty aftertaste. £18.25 each! We were staying in the hotel for 2 nights, but decided not to eat there the second night. We complained to the waiter who said he would tell the chef. Nobody came back with even an apology. We had paid when we ordered. I spoke to the receptionist the following morning who was lovely, and very apologetic. She suggested that we could have a free drink in the bar later that day. However for the price of the meal, I suggested a bottle of wine would be more acceptable, particularly as one of the cheapest bottles (Pinot Grigio) was £25.50 a bottle! We won’t eat there again, and although the staff, and our room was lovely, my eggs royal for breakfast the first morning delivered undercooked poached eggs, the second morning the bacon was so over cooked I couldn’t cut it, never mind eat it. We won’t stay again.

After seeing reports of the restoration of the murals we expected to have to fight out way to the bar! What we hadn't realised was how isolated the hotel is so found the bar empty and we were able to get great pictures of the artwork. The staff were great and the beer well kept though a little pricey. We called in during our walk from Bernard Castle and there is now a signposted trail connecting to the Teesdale Way. Not a difficult walk for even the most casual hiker.

Had Sunday lunch here and it was overpriced and very disappointing. There was nothing fresh about the food. The vegetables were microwaved beyond being edible, the roast potatoes tasted like they had been made the day (maybe two days before), it was advertised as roast chicken but it was just a chicken breast that had been shoved in the oven and so dry you could choke. My husband’s vegetarian roast (difficult to review because of the tiny portion) was bland and over cooked. All served in a atmosphereless room by staff who seemed to not care. All in all a total waste of £45 for two lunches and drinks. Will not return.

Saturday lunch, called in on the spur of the moment. Cheese souffle was standard and nice, but had a peculiar bottom layer of pickle or diced beetroot or something similar. This was too sweet and too acidic and overpowered the cheese. For a main I chose the pheasant from the specials board. This was a bit overcooked. Good jus. the mash was fine, but the red cabbage concoction that came with it was awful - way too sweet and chewy, a bit like caramelised cabbage marmalade. This may have been intentional, but i had to leave most of it. £55 for two with a large glass of wine (pleasant) and tea.

I struggle to understand how a hotel of this supposed standard can bring itself to serve the terrible meal we suffered recently, and I certainly can't understand on what planet the chef thinks that advertising a steak and Guinness pie but serving some mediocre beef stew in a small porcelain pot and plonking a pre-cooked piece of pastry on the top is acceptable. The portion was so small the supposed crust was balanced on the rim of the dish, so the only time the pastry touched the meat was when it was on my plate. The soup was ok, but the bread roll had been zapped in a microwave so was scalding hot and soggy, and the buttered veg were desperately undercooked - and had never seen any butter. It would have been a poor meal anywhere, but at their prices and in a supposed quality hotel it was totally unacceptable. The worst thing was that we couldn't even complain as we were taken there by friends as a treat, so complaining on the night would have been discourteous. The only high spot came courtesy of the friendly and attentive staff.

Paid £65 per head for a very average meal. Canapés, were mass produced probably Iceland’s own, bread buns were cold and hard, starters, The soufflé was indescribable and resembled a sponge pudding rather than a soufflé. Main courses had been plated up sometime, before being served. Potato’s were ‘awful’ inedible, veg’s were all served in a bowl which were wilted. Desserts - there was no brandy in the brandy butter which was served with the Xmas pudding on a plate with some white sauce, no decoration. The choc tart, the purée was congealed on the plate. The mince pies were mass produced. All in all a poor £65 worth of mass produced food, which was rushed and which I would not recommend to anyone and when mentioning to reception was told we were the only party to complain, or were we the only brave ones. At the very most the meal was worth only £25 tops and could have been served in any bar.

I have never had a meal with friends before where all three of each refused to eat our meals. The food was shocking. Cold, old chips. Frozen, cold Veg. Burned batter on the fish - dripping in oil. Dried up, over cooked chicken. Dry pastry lid on the steak and ale pie (which tasted like Fray Bentos from the 70's) The worst food we have all had for a long time. We didn't't eat any of it, neither did we pay for it. The only redeeming feature was Laura/Lara? Who couldn't apologise enough. The Morritt Arms is a wonderful place. The gardens are wonderful. Clearly the owners spend all their money on gardeners and not chefs. Such a shame, we live locally and would love to have visited often, but we won't be going back.

Food was lovely in the bar on the 1st night Restaurant was fantastic apart from warm white wine & frozen bread rolls which obviously we complained about. Myself and a group of 13 others had lunch yesterday in the lovely sunny gardens of the Morritt. I ordered the trout for starters which was absolutely delicious, very fresh and complimenting flavours. Once the starters were cleared the trouble started and due to an error with the waitresses not telling the chef we were ready for our mains we had to wait for over 45 minutes! One of our party unfortunately had to leave without even eating her main as it took too long. I'd ordered the roast beef dinner (it being a Sunday) but I was again disappointed, this time with the quality of the meat. It was flavourless and very fatty. I also felt the general level of service went downhill as the afternoon progressed. In all, I wouldn't choose to dine here in future as there are numerous establishments in this locality who are much more professional and consistent.

My Hubby and I booked the Morritt with a Spa package at the Garage Spa in Barnard Castle for my 50th Birthday. I think the total cost was £319.This included 1 spa treatment each, use of the spa facilities a 'high tea', dinner , bed & breakfast. The reception team were extremely welcoming and helpful. We were asked to pre order dinner as there was a party of 200 farmers arriving later that evening for a charity dinner.Due to the arrival of the farmers we were provided with an upgrade on our room to a 'premium' . This was located outside the mane building and was more of a small suite with a lovely bathroom and 4 poster bed. The radiator didn't work but we were quickly supplied with a gas heater to remedy the situation. We were also offered our first drink of the evening on the house which was very thoughtful. The Garage Spa itself was very relaxing, some nice features and it wasn't too busy meaning the changing rooms (which are novel and well equipped) were not too busy. The Spa treatments took place on time but felt a little rushed unfortunately. We enjoyed the facilities and afternoon tea. The only negative being we took tea in the lovely lounge area dressed in our swimsuits and dressing gowns- a bit odd as we were wet from the hot tubs etc.....Dinner in the Morritt was an experience. We were served what appeared to be what I imagine nouvelle cuisine portions which were very tasty and beautifully presented. The triple cooked chips however are a must try- highly recommended.Although portion size was small we didn't leave hungry.Breakfast was offered with plenty of choice and the team serving it were friendly and attentive as was the gentleman who served us dinner the previous evening.A good experience over all but I wasn't blown away unfortunately even though the team were a pleasure from start to finish.

I stayed here with my sister and parents the night before my sister's wedding. For £25 the 3 course meal offered excellent value with a lovely choice for all 3 courses. The starters were by far the best course, as the veg was a little too al dente, and I do like my veg to be crisp rather than soggy, but the fish dishes were gorgeous, and my beef was good too.The dining room staff were attentive, and made sure that we had everything we needed, as well as checking to see that our meals were nice too. However, as I have previously commented on following a Sunday lunch visit earlier in the year, the bar seems to be the Achilles heel foe the Morritt; granted the guy behind the bar was new, but he did seem very out of his depth...perhaps not the best guy for the job. I must say though, that the senior member of staff was very good, and overall the bar service was much better than my previous visit all due to the intervention of the manager. The Morritt is a lovely old building and with the excellent food on offer, I can only highly recommend it for it's lovely welcoming staff and excellent food!

Attended a wedding here, and while it was well organised, the decor was 'old but smart' and the atmosphere (being a wedding occasion) was happy and cheerful, there were a number of grumbles from guests about the bars, apart from the wedding prices. Some guests who had been waiting at the bar prior to the wedding were suddenly told that 'no more wedding guests would be served because it was almost time for guests to go through'. This was half an hour before the scheduled start of the wedding, and some late arrivals had come a long way, and in their words were 'gasping'. The people asking guests to 'move' were also somewhat officious .Surely it is the customer who decides if and when they want a drink, and whom can decide whether to drink up, or leave until later. Later, the lack of bar staff led to longer than expected waits. A good bar person knows who's next, and far too many unfinished drinks were cleared up by the glass collectors while people were dancing or visiting the toilets These may seem small points, but these were not isolated events

Visited the Morrit many years ago and really enjoyed the ambience in the old time bar area. Apparently a visit from the great Charles Dickens had inspired the famous Northumbrian artist Gilroy to paint Murals of Dickensian characters on the walls of the bar. This hotel has recently become a firm favorite for me on Saturday or Sunday lunchtimes as they are happy to serve sandwiches on both weekend days. The tiered garden is lovely on a sunny day and the bar is equally pleasant if the weather is unfavourable. It is very popular for lunch in the restaurant but I have yet to book such a formal affair.

Food and ambience were excellent. Would definitely recommend it as a good place to dine. If you arrive early you probably don't have to book. We ate in the bar which was very cosy.

I went for Sunday lunch with family. The service was rubbish , but the food was nice. The drinks took ages, and at times were wrong. The order for the food was taken fairly quick. The starters arrived, but no cutlery or condiments. These should have arrived before the meal. Inbetween starters and main, I decided to go to the bar again. This took 15 minutes even though the bar was quiet. My main meal had been sat on the table 10 minutes getting cold. We had to ask for salt and pepper The sweets came out before the cutlery yet again. When paying for the bill, this was nearly costly as I nearly got over charged. I agree with others, that the staff need training and supporting better as this let a nice meal down.

Nice hotel but quite pricey. Perhaps they can charge more because they are a Grade 2 listed building. Our room was right above the front entrance, and unfortunately immediately above the dining room so it was quite noisy. Breakfast was ok although the fried egg was undercooked and portions quite small, but tasty apart from that. £179 for 1 adult and 1 child B&B so what I would class as expensive for what you got. Staff really pleasant though and lovely atmosphere.

Great location and the exterior promises much. However once inside it is apparent that it is in desperate need of some TLC. Very tired and nondescript. Food is generic bog standard pub food. Great shame . Staff were very friendly .

We ate in Gilroy's Dining Room. Although the food was good, portion size was small and the experience was rather like Fawlty Towers. We asked for more bread and were informed that we had received our allocation and that no more would be provided. The menu included an Amuse Bouche (one asparagus tip) and another before dessert. We decided to skip dessert and have a coffee with Petit Fours.. The waiter asked if we wanted either the pre-dessert Amuse Bouche or the Petit Fours. We pointed out that the menu did include both and he said he would have to ask the chef if both could be provided. They were both served to us.

After arranging early book in, only got in to room at 1.30.The following day had to request that our room cleaned etc as we wished to use it. The room, a double, had no resemblance as those shown in their website. Th windows did no stay up, as the room was very warm, the frames in urgent need of some paint. Staff shortages was evident and some in training needs. The price charged, one expects far better than this.

Met some friends here for a meal to celebrate their special Wedding Anniversary. The service and was food faultless; a lovely evening made very special by the delicious food served. Despite a large wedding reception being held the same evening the service and food was still top notch!

We stayed at the hotel this weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We stayed in Heather room which is lovely, although all products in the bathroom were empty ie shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc, my husband asked reception if they could be refilled but they were not which was disappointing. The spa is excellent, we did order a bottle of bubble but we're just given a glass each and had to go and ask for it to be filled up every time which wasn't great. The meal in the evening was very good, excellent waiters who explained the food and knew there stuff. It is a great place but lacked staff training (apart from the two waiters) eg reception and bar staff very poor, our bottle of wine was just plonked in front of us, the bar man didn't ask us to try or even poor any out, all a bit picky of us I know but it's a shame because if the staff were trained better the place would be brilliant.

Overall we enjoyed our night here. Plumped for the dickens bistro bar as is seemed to have a little more atmosphere than the quite large dining room. The welcome was a little matter of fact and the barman very polite if a little four. The food was satisfactory my ribeye was cooked as requested but a little tough and not the tastiest piece of meat I have eaten. My wife enjoyed the gelled chicken supreme, albeit had to leave the meat on the bone which was undercooked. The beer was excellent. Very nice wine and a beautiful setting. Looking forward to a daytime visit in the summer when we can sit in the gorgeous gardens for a bar meal.

A group of girls and I came for afternoon tea on 19th April and it was amazing!! We ate in the Gilroy restaurant on the centre table. We were shown to our table with drinks already there waiting for us. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We were all amazed by the delivery of the afternoon tea! Beautiful Royal Albert crockery, delicious looking sandwiches and mouth watering cakes, fresh and still warm home made scones and teacakes with clotted cream and preserve! Absolutely delicious! I've had afternoon tea at a couple of places but this by far beats them and was the best I've ever had! Definitely recommend and very reasonable pricing! Thank you!!!

The Morritt Arms is an iconic destination in Teesdale. But it always lets its self down in one way or another. Easter Saturday late afternoon and families out walking would love to sit by an open fire in the lovely Dickins bar and enjoy the delightful atmosphere of this much loved place. But no fire and not even one when we left at 8.30.We ordered food from the bar menu, which was reasonable if not exceptional. But the other area of let down was the service, this time no competing wedding function to distract staff, just bar and dinning room customers. They were not rushed off there feet and there was definitely enough different faces to be attentive and clear tables when finished. Alas half of our plates were taken along with glasses which were not empty. The remaining left on the table until we asked them to be moved.Such a nice place to meet up with friends, it just a shame we continue to be disappointed.!

We booked a table for 1:30, arrived a little early to have a drink in the lounge and decide what we wanted to eat. I had a starter, blue cheese soufflé, very tasty. We both had the roast sirloin with Yorkshire puds and veg. For pudding I had passion fruit mousse with lemon and lime ice cream, which was excellently presented and tasted delicious. The dining room was light and spacious and the staff were polite, attentive and very efficient. Will definitely go back.

My wife booked this hotel as part of an overnight stay with spa package included. We arrived approx 1.00pm so went straight to the spa which is located right next door which is called THE GARAGE SPA , as you would expect this was once an old filling station located on the old A66 road but has been changed into one of the best spa's we have been in. It has been totally converted and has all the ammenities you would expect , Hot tubs,Warm tubs,Cold tubs,Several special invigerating showers,Salt room, outside in the courtyard is located a old wooden style caravan which is actually a steam room and also a stainless steel hot tub.(very romantic), they also have a relaxing area and swing chairs, upstairs is all the massage rooms, myself & my wife had a quite relaxing massage which was included in the spa break, before the spa experience we had an afternoon tea, which included sandwiches, cakes & coffee's. This was in all a great experience. At 5.00pm we were then shown to the hotel reception and were greeted very warmly by the receptionist, as my wife was booking in we were told that we would recieve a free upgrade to Gold package which meant we got the best room available.(We had paid for the Silver package) so this was a great start to the overnight break. The hotel is quite old but has been well looked after, we got to our room and although it was old it was very clean with quite expensive curtains and furniture. The room fittings were all gold plated and the bathroom was full of shampoo's,conditioner, gels etc and plenty of clean towels. The only downside was the old windows were single glazed and the wind was blowing through most of the night but this was probably due the the gales outside blowing direct onto the windows. We had a drink in the bar downstairs and were given the meal menus to browse through. We were then taken through to the dining room and was seated by a great head waiter who looked after us both all night.I must say that the meals are first class and are very well presented. We were given a free starter of grilled sirloin pieces with textured and flavoured vegtables,I then had my ordered starter of pan fried scallops (Beautiful) then onto the main course of grilled venison with veg & stacked chips (again beautiful) and onto the last course of Rum Baba which was a series of fresh fruit finly chopped on a white choclate boat with a small pouch of rum to pour over yourself. (magical) with a bottle of house wine to complete this magical night.Although the meal portion's are not large the presentation makes up for this.I take my hat off to all the staff for making this a great experience for me & my wife and a special thank you to the head waiter.WE WILL BE BACK
