Lovely little place, quite out of the way & quiet most of the time. We went in a Friday around 4.30pm & nobody was in the bar/restaurant when we arrived, but it started getting a little busier after 6 or 7pm....it's very cozy inside, has a big open fire inside the bar/restaurant where u 1st walk in...and it's extremely warm, me & my Mum sat in the comfy chairs in front of it, so did an older couple who'd been out walking with their dog, they were cold so we told them to come sit near the fire, on the other 2 chairs in front of us. We didn't stay there overnight cos we don't live far from this, maybe 2 miles away...but my Dad has stayed there a few times in the past, but many years ago, it was lovely then...but I'd imagine it still is cos it looks very much the same downstairs, clean, tidy, cozy, with polite/respectful staff.

We stayed a night here and enjoyed our stay. The rooms were clean and spacious. The pub was small and cosy, they had a great fire going. Breakfast was nice and the location was good. Pillows were a bit uncomfortable, however that is just a personal preference.

We had a lovely meal at the restaurant as part of our hotel stay. The food and service was quick with very friendly staff. Food was tasty and what you’d associate with pub food. Breakfast too was quick and wonderful as a complimentary addition. Really well priced menu and drinks. Reasons not 5 star: Menu was different online to inside the restaurant which was less varied

Fantastic Sunday lunch, everything was cooked to perfection and super tasty. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the service. The girls were really friendly and helpful but service was very slow. It took two hours for mains desserts and one drink. Definitely give this place a try, you will not be disappointed.

Overnight stay. Premises tired, in need of refurbishing. Linen fresh and clean, but Sub standard cleaning - cobwebs on ceiling and down side of the wardrobe. Breakfast in bar area: slow service, table sticky, food options limited and stingy. A disappointment since, we had visited a few years ago and been impressed. Not worth £90 room and breakfast.

Visited Batemans on my daughters wedding anniversary The vegetarian options contained pesto and Parmesan I asked the manager about this she said they used grana padano, which any vegetarian knows contains rennet. The manager didn’t seem to care, you would think that she and her chef running a restaurant would know this, due to the lack of choice I had the falafel burger which was dry, could not eat it. If you are a vegan or vegetarian do not go to Batemans mill

We've been customers of this place for years and whilst I've always loved it's rustic style it's now getting to the point where it just needs a little tlc (mainly a new carpet in the main bar). The new change of allowing dogs is a shame and it did smell like a fusty, old place. The prices aren't cheap which is fine because the chefs are great, the menu is varied and the food is delicious but the environment doesn't quite live up to the food anymore and I don't want to be eating a £15 meal with a dog a few tables away. This place used to be a water mill, the stone work etc is lovely and it's still worth a visit for delicious food.

Have eaten here on numerous occasions which prompted the family to book for Christmas lunch. Very disappointing. The roast potatoes were brown in the centre and inedible, Yorkshire puddings burnt, the fish option was served without a sauce. We've eaten out on Christmas day for the past 6 years (apart from last year) with mixed results, 1 terrible and the rest quite good but Bateman's mill was by far the most relaxed, welcoming, value for money restaurant we've had the pleasure of spending our Christmas day with. Lets face it nowhere is going to be cheap on Christmas day but when you compare it with others in the area, Batemans comes out on the cheaper side, this seriously does not reflect is the service, quality, quantity or ambience. From the moment we entered, we was met by a big smile and a glass of bucks fizz. The service from moment we entered to the moment we left was exceptional, nothing was too much trouble. We didn't wait long for drinks or food, very prompt but not rushed. Thank you to all the Staff at Batemans Mill for making our Day so special

I'm really puzzled why Batemans does not feature higher in these ratings, OK, it's not perhaps easy to find, but well worth the effort. My wife and I have eaten several times at Batemans, always at lunchtime, and have always been very happy with the standard here. Initially we used Groupon deals, what great value these represented, but now we are quite happy to pay normal prices, which are reasonable. This is does not fall into the trap of seeing and describing itself as a "Gastro Pub " the food is much better than that!! The menu is not massive, always a good thing in my eyes, but extensive enough to cater for most tastes. I have to confess that we struggle to order anything other than the steak pie which is spectacularly good. Proper tray baked pie with lovely shortcrust pastry and an ample filling of soft, tender meat. Accompanied by well cooked vegetables and excellent chips, this is the best steak pie to be had, and I count myself as something of an expert! The rest of the menu shows flair and imagination and has never disappointed when we have managed to get beyond the pie. Service is friendly and attentive, absolutely nothing to complain about in our experience. The ambience at Batemans is delightful if you like old world tradition and quality, most welcoming yesterday was a large roaring log fire, and tasteful Christmas decorations. Well done Batemans!

Visited for a family Christmas meal. Re-booked this restaurant after visiting 4 weeks ago and being very impressed. Unfortunately our second visit did not resemble the first. Menus not provided on arrival, menus were not taken away once we had ordered. 5 of the 13 meals ordered had to be sent back as cold (had been sat on the side as our starter plates were not cleared) no salt and pepper on the table. Cutlery was dirty and soup spoons not provided when ordered. The Camembert tart (only veggie option) was awful, you could see the half empty tart shell, the smallest amount of Camembert within. Mains plates were not cleared and had to be physically requested to be removed. Cutlery was dirty on the table. This was a family Christmas meal, no Christmas music, no crackers. Very loud thumping music, to the point where the waitress had to turn it down to take our order. Very disappointing.

I could complain about a lot of things but I’m going to focus on the key issue. Mould and Serratia Marcescens bacteria. Our bathroom was mouldy and covered in pink Serratia marcescens bacteria. We asked three times for it to be cleaned properly and it wasn’t. This doesn’t occur overnight. These organisms take several weeks if not months of inadequate cleaning to get to the stage they were. Disgusting and unsanitary.

Another lovely meal. We do have to travel quite a distance to the Bateman's mill but it is worth it. I must reiterate from previous reviews that I can't understand why people aren't queuing out the door for such good quality. It was a quiet Tuesday evening when we visited and I ordered the pork from the specials menu, my wife ordered the mussels and both of my 2 kids ordered from the kids menu (1 had burger the other had fish fingers). The main thing I like about this place is it's not the norm. The pork was a 10oz trimmed chop, cooked well with a crackling straw, fondant potato, bacon & leek stack (I think as quite remember) & mustard and cider sauce. It was £15 which was good value for that plate full of food. It was cooked well, seasoned well and was presented/ looked great. My wife's mussels were nice, my son's meal was good and my daughter's fish went down well. We will be returning soon.

He verdict was excellent. The only downside was that he could have eaten a little more. Mine choice, a vegetarian option, was extremely good and plentiful. There is plenty of choice on the menu, possibly more choice for non veggies. No vegan option but could possibly ask when booking. I was so looking forward to a special Mother's Day meal. A break from washing up, quality time with the family!!!! What a total disaster, they put us on a table in what I can only describe as the waiting area where people enter & leave the pub, it was cold, you had people brushing past you as you ate your meal. People having drinks & children shouting, you couldn't have a conversation with your family on the same table... I asked to be seated else where before we sat down and was met with a very unpleasant tone from the lady manager!!!! Then to top the day off the chicken tasted very salty & unpleasant, the food was poor to average, with shop brought desserts.... I've arranged many works parties here in the past, but that will be the last time I enter the tired uninviting Batemans mill hotel. The manager was only out to make as much profit as she could on Mother's Day, there was no customer service or satisfaction. Very disappointed in every way.

Will certainly return, my partner is a seafood lover and this was the finest meal she has had since she was last in the Med. Only grumble would be the furniture is a little disappointing, the seating had Velcro on the underside which kept catching on clothing and the table was a little cramped, especially when the main arrived; but these are very minor concerns. Overall, if you enjoy Tapas and Paella, then you are in for a genuine treat.

I was pleased to see a mixture of vegetables including mange tout and not just carrots and peas. The pie was well cooked and full of meat and very tasty. We have been here a few times since last review and have never had a bad meal. We have Monday's & Tuesday's off work so find it better to grab a bite to eat with the family on those days and I'm still amazed that the place does not have people queuing to get in. It is always quite steady on those days so if anyone (like us) just wants to turn up without a booking I'd recommend a visit if you were in the area. I'm a bit of a burger man and had the burger there twice now and really really impressed with them every time. This time it was warm outside so asked the boss man / waiter / barman (not sure what to call him as he does most jobs there) if the sharing platter ploughman's was big enough to have for 1 for a main? He told me, it's very big so I ordered it! Love a challenge! When it came I wished I'd have listened to him. It was huge! But beautiful! Slices of ham, pickled onions, cheese, pork pie, bread, piccalilli and crisp bread with the most lovely creamy goats cheese. Truly fantastic quality produce and enjoyed every mouth full but will listen to the main man next time as I gave it a good go but could not get through it all. My wife had the chicken (again! 3rd time) and my daughter had pasta which they both loved. With my positive review comes a quite serious complaint, when I ordered the ploughman's it would have been 5 mins after the waitress came past our table carrying a burger which looked fantastic, smelled fantastic and hovered about my head height so I spent the next 10 mins regretting placing my order. All I ask is that they walk the long way around or cover it up so I can't see the burgers if I have not ordered them. LOL. But seriously it's a nice place, nice find and the food is good (every-time which is a testament to them).

It was ok, we ordered garlic bread for starters bearing in mind there was 2 of us, 3 tiny pieces came out between us both, we had to order more garlic bread, we sat outside in the sun, there were no parasols at all to sit under and the chairs and tables were very out dated. Our main course was ok, but again cutlery and plates etc very old fashioned and out dated brown plates. Quite expensive for what we had.

Food was very good this lunchtime (Father's day Sunday lunch) Fresh crispy Yorkshire puddings and nice vegetables. Only criticism would be on the service- staff all seemed to be hidden away/downstairs or hanging around at the bar chatting. Never anyone around when we needed anything. Finally cleared plates and brought us bill but didn't return to take payment for 20 minutes so went downstairs to bar again to find someone. Restaurant itself is nice enough but my dads chair was falling apart and my sons chair was heavily stained- maybe time they bought some new ones!!

Very well presented establishment, not hard to find. Clean tables but we were not given seats, just an awkward padded bench that was slightly comfortable at best. I selected a seafood trio as a starter. The crab cakes were like battered pulp. The calamari had soggy batter, but the shrimp was very tasty. To follow as a main I chose the "whole hog" burger which was bursting with meats. The bread was too small for the contents so it was impossible to pick up. The black pudding engulfed any moisture and dried out every bite I took. The over cooked dry bacon rashers were chewy and the burger patty itself seemed cooked from frozen in texture. Along with the limp salad dressing and unripened tomatoes, it was a very lackluster burger. The sides, "coleslaw" (their version was shredded red cabbage in a sauce) and a watery mustard did not compliment the burger at all.

We were the only ones in the restaurant with a party going on downstairs. The olives were out of a supermarket jar and the cheesy garlic bread was bland. I was more or less not allowed to have my steak blue as the waiter said ‘oh no have it rare’. The pan fried sea bass was soggy and the giant profiterole was like a giant Viennese whirl with lumpy frozen ice cream in the middle. Overall disappointing considering I had taken my cousin here for a special evening. Did the British thing of not complaining maybe out of sympathy as we were the only people in the restaurant but looking back wished I had.

Food was lovely as per usual but the older bar staff could do with being more friendly. (Man and possibly bar manager) it was disappointing to be spoken to like I did when I And the other bar staff asked a simple question.

Thus was our first visit and we were not disappointed. The building is lovely and the staff welcoming and friendly. You have a choice to eat in the bar or the upstairs restaurant, we chose the latter. Both myself and my partner chose the confit belly pork which was absolutely delicious. For our mains I went for the Lamb rump while on the other side of the table the Cheese and Leek Tart was the choice. Again both were impressive and tasty. The on disappointing part of the meal was the accompanying potatoes and vegetables which were unfortunately overcooked. For our 3rd course we shared the cheeseboard and this was well presented with a nice variety of cheeses. All in all a very enjoyable experience

We called in on early Saturday evening . Lots of booked tables but they managed to get us a table. Ordered pie of the day , which was steak and kidney with chunky home made chips and rich gravy . Also ordered a chilli burger . This came in a bun , cheese and an amazing chunky steak chilli . Chilli was clearly home made with beans , peppers and onion . All served with home made chunky chips .

Amazing place, having lived in the area for over 10 years in my youth, I never visited Batemans Mill which is a shame, because the food on offer is incredible. Recently visited after a family visit at Easter and was not disappointed. I had the Whole Hog burger, my family tried the fish and chips, cheese tart, jacket potato and mac n cheese, all of it was divine. Sat by a roaring log fire, sampling the chocolate ice cream, jam sponge and custard - what better way to spend a bank holiday Monday. Superb.
