A cosy pub with excellent food. Starters were delicious: soft shell crab and broccoli pakora, and it was nice to have the choice of something a bit different. Then for mains we had the steak pie and fish and chips, both were really good. Service excellent. Left feeling very full and happy. Unfortunately it was a bit misty, so we’ll definitely have to come back to appreciate the view and enjoy another meal.

What a find!! A pub and restaurant that doesn't allow DOGS !! Seen bad reviews for this place, all from dog owners! We don't dislike dogs, but having them in restaurants and bars is unhygienic and unsafe. Bad dog owners, feed dogs from their tables, let them sit on furniture, lay in walkways and worst all, allow them to walk straight in to a public area when they often wet and dirty. Dogs and their owners are welcome in the vast majority of pubs and restaurants, please use them! Let us, who don't want to be surrounded by dogs when we go out for a meal and a drink have one place to go!

Since moving to the peaks and living in one of the nearby villages I have visited quite a few times over the last few years. It dawned on me on my last visit that I’ve never written a review considering I love coming here! I visited twice at the end of September for lunch. The food is excellent. One occasion I had the roast beef, absolutely delicious, big Yorkshire, lovely beef, 4 different veg and extra gravy and cauliflower cheese served separately. The other time my partner and I both had the burger. Excellent meal, probably the best burger I have ever had! The bacon on the burger is so tasty. It was served with tempura spring onion which is different. Also the usual fries and coleslaw but also a small dish of caesar salad. My partner highly recommends the blackberry and apple crumble for dessert. I Would definitely recommend visiting the barrel not just for the fantastic views which are amazing but for the delicious food! Staff are friendly and the service is efficient which to me always makes it a nicer experience.

This is a fine pub with glorious views. Stayed in the Barrel suite which has windows facing that view and is smart and comfortable. Food is excellent and generous, though older people (like us) might appreciate the option of lighter meals. Very much a foody place. If the weather is warm there's plenty of outdoor seating. Lovely, welcoming staff...and excellent breakfasts.

Sunday lunchtime. The weather was a bit cool, windy and a few spots of rain. I hoped to sit inside. We had a pint and a coffee. (£9.10) All the tables were set for Diners, but there were hardly any in at the time. I asked where could we sit? We were told that we could sit outside. Wonderful views Wonderful customer service. Thanks.

We’ve had a drink here mid walk on several occasions, for us the view is the only draw The Barrel offers. They are not dog friendly, if you have a dog and want food sometimes they will serve it outside sometimes not. Expect rude service and to be ignored at the bar, drinks are also way over priced

Had high hopes for this pub after seeing it on TV, on Great British Pub walks. Drove up here after a long walk in nearby Chatsworth, hoping to have some food. Only two of us, but we had our dog with us- as do lots of walkers in the area. Unfortunately, you can’t take a dog inside this pub. This must be the only pub in the Peak District where dogs are not welcomed. Aside from this, I was very disappointed with the poor selection of beers. Again, Peak District/rural Derbyshire pubs are famed for their selection of quality real ales but this wasn’t the case here. Pedigree (found in every single town pub in the Midlands) or Wainwrights were the only options. Both mass produced, mediocre beers. Surely there should be more? There’s so many local breweries in the area. Ended up having two pints of Guinness, which we drank outside. Luckily it was a glorious evening, so enjoyed the incredible view, which will always draw customers here.

The only reason not to give 5 stars is because we were seated , group of 6 adults, in a tiny “ nook “ next to the bar that would more reasonably had seated 4 ( we are average size). We had to move our chairs to be at the corners in order to fit around. No one helped us do that . We did ask if there was another table available but there wasn’t. That did mar our overall experience. But. The good stuff. The place was packed and bustling but not over loud. And for us it was so fabulous to eat in a dog free space. That’s really important to us as a family with allergies. And importantly the food. Between us we had roast dinners - beef and lamb, shepherds pie and fish / chips ( with an egg which was unusual ). The meats in particular were excellent - as was the mash. The well portioned meats ( three good slices - succulent and soft ) came with relatively small portions of cabbage , a carrot , a parsnip , two florets of cauliflower and a a small roast potato. Plus a large Yorkshire pudding. The pie had a side of broccoli. We only had one round of soft drinks - with a £12 tip the bill was £145. That felt reasonable.

Everyone was so friendly and pleasant, and they even gave us a plant each to take home. We will definitely be returning to this absolute gem. Not a great start as we were a little late due to closed road diversions so, knowing we were up against the clock, we skipped the first course. For mains one of us had the roast beef, which was served only medium rare, luckily what we wanted but made clear there was no choice. Very tasty though. Roasties disappointing as they seemed to be new potatoes that had been put in the oven for a while. Yorkshire pudding was ok but had a strange cheese sauce in the bottom for some reason. Almost sacrilegious with Yorkshire being so near! Hand raised steak pie was really good, full of massive, tender pieces of steak, served with fab chips, apparently cooked not once, not twice, but three times. We blame Heston Blumenthal and his Fat Duck … Did feel that we were hurried as they had another (very impatient, clucking at the bar) party after exactly 2 hours. The waitress actually stood over us with her credit card machine. We asked if we could sit in the bar to have coffees but no, we had to leave …..

The Barrel Inn - 10/10! - We came back to the Barrel Inn on Wed 13th December, this time to feast from the Festive Menu. I had the best Turkey lunch ever, my hubbie had the belly pork and he was delighted too. Then onto Mrs Cone's Christmas pudding with rum sauce and rum'n raisin icecream - just sumptuous. Just back from a lovely weekend stay at the Barrel Inn. The Barrel Inn is a family run business and the hosts, Phil and Diane are warm and friendly with plenty of time to chat. The food is of a high standard with a varied menu. Try the plate of pig if you like pork belly. Breakfast, where do I start. Plenty of choice and the full english will set you up for the day. The Inn is kept very clean and the rooms are spotless. A special thanks to all the staff, particulately Allison and Boaz for looking after us during our stay. I've rated this review 5-stars in spite of some disappointment yesterday - because of the superb response from the owner, Phil Cone. We've found The Barrel Inn consistently excellent in friendly service and delicious food over the last year or so, since we first visited. Back in August, we came for our wedding anniversary having booked the Chateaubriand - which was excellent. Yesterday, we arrived hoping to have a steak pie each, only to find they had just sold out! Instead, I chose the Chicken Kiev - which was tasty, tender and plentiful! However, my wife chose the Homity Pie, which turned out to be rather tasteless, and worse, undercooked - to the extent that the celeriac was too hard to chew, and the leeks too tough to cut! When we mentioned her big disappointment to Phil, he immediately apologised, checked out the dish, and took responsibility for my wife's poor experience, offering to remedy the issue. Not only that, but he brought us a sample of the Venison Tar Tar starter (venison is a favourite of mine, but neither of us are very keen on Tar Tar meat generally). But this dish we both enjoyed, and would highly recommend it! We finished up with a couple of desserts (fruit crumble and panna cota), which as usual were outstanding. We're looking forward to our next visit!

A fantastic lunch with a welcoming real fire on the worse weather day of the year so far. After an 'adventurous' journey to get there we received a warm welcome and quickly supplied with drinks and menu. Our choices were all perfectly cooked and delicious. Venison was absolutely perfect and I enjoyed my gluten free shepherd's pie. I'd say to anyone who queries the pricing that this hotel's food is definitely not over priced . The sheer quality of the ingredients, a highly skilled chef and standard of the food are all exceptionally good for the prices. A visit to the Barrell on a recommendation certainly didn't disappoint.

We have visited for years and know the family behind The Barrel. Oh for the days when the fish served resembled a whale (our joke) and tasted delicious. On our visit last evening the fish has shrunk to a quarter of what it used to be. Similarly with the peas-Perhaps a desert spoon full. I can concur with a previous reviewer about being rushed from starter to main course. We had 2 attempts to take our starters away before we had finished ! These days the owners limit bookings for meal last orders at 7.45. They seem to want to squash diners into a 2 hour window in the evening, presumably to be able to close early & cut overheads ? We left the pub before 9pm and only one table was still occupied. No doubt the pub will close not long after. Seems like the bar only drinkers are discouraged. They used to add to the atmosphere, which is now sadly missing.

Our time in the UK was lovely as we stayed at The Barrel Inn. The food is exceptional, the accommodations are updated, clean and comfortable. The view of the valley is stunning. Our family recommended The Barrel and we could not have been more pleased....

We’d had an awful experience at another pub in the area and left. We drove around trying to find somewhere that wasn’t fully booked. The Barrel was our 4th attempt and despite being about to stop serving food, they squeezed us in. All the staff,...

This was our 5th visit this year and each time we’ve all been super impressed. It was super busy as it was the Bank Holiday but still very organised and lovely food, with all staff helping each other. Prices seem to have gone up slightly...

A group of friends stopped here for a pint whilst on a walk to Hathersage. The beer, once we were served and it took a while, was well kept but expensive. It appears that this pub concentrates on food trade and that drinkers are tolerated...

The food has always been so good when we come here. We are locals and we come regularly. We have tried a range of dishes and always been happy. The venison was so good, as was the pork stroganoff and lasagna. Delicious desserts. And a...

We have visited the pub on several occasions in the past few years and food has always been good. However yesterday the food was poor. Home cooked chips have now been replaced by cheap fries and baguette replaced with a very cheap bread roll which...

The cab driver who took us from Buxton Station to our B&B in Tideswell recommended The Barrel Inn for dining and a great view from the top of the peak. He wasn't wrong. We went one evening for dinner with friends who had a car....

Called in for a pint and lunch but told "we don't allow dogs". Must be the only place around that doesn't.

The view across the valley and the sunset was worth the bike ride up. Staff are lovely, food wise the pie and scampi hit the spot. Not a bad selection of beer either. Excellent.

I went for Sunday lunch at The Barrel with my daughters, for a dad and daughters day, and they're a little fussy, but they adored their Sunday roast and the Yorkshire puddings are their favourites of any place anywhere! I enjoyed a really HUGE fish...

Visited for afternoon tea for my birthday, gorgeous as usual :) Friendly efficient staff, the food was wonderful, so full had to take the cake home. Also picked up a birthday cake I had ordered for my son's birthday and that was amazing, thank you very much.

It was wonderful to see the Ruddy Duck re-opening, albeit temporarily in the library - which was decorated beautifully for the evening. The 5-course tasting menu we enjoyed was exceptional, my particular highlights being the beef cooked two ways which came with a scrummy potato gratin and our dessert, a superb creation of rhubarb and ginger, showing off the best of local produce. The kale even came from the walled gardens at Wortley Hall! Our servers David and Brogan were both warm, friendly and knowledgeable about both the menu and the venue and we'll be delighted to dine here again. A week later and I'm still thinking about the homemade rhubarb cocktail that David created for me!
