We came here for lunch and have been a few times. This time we booked a pod, with a heater, this experience all the more pleasurable. Every time we come here Calum a member of staff here has always been like today polite considerate and always has a smile on his face. Thanks to him and the great lunch it's another great time here. The food was good quality and there was lots of it, perhaps so much it could be seen as wasteful. The staff were very pleasant but service was chaotic. Main courses being served before starter plates were cleared and coffee being served before dessert. The atmosphere needs considerable work. Not a relaxing place to eat. Background music louder than some gigs I have been to and lights brighter than a floodlit football pitch. Furniture more school canteen than restaurant.

Had an early visit, yesterday evening. As usual, the food was excellent and good value. The staff were efficient and attentive and made us feel comfortable and welcome, especially Kelly who joined in with our lighthearted banter. Made us feel 21 again.... again! Fantastic, we booked table 2 which gave us a lovely view of the canal and the scenery beyond. Great value for money and lovely customer service, nothing was too much trouble. A bonus was the lovely balmy summer weather which really made the venue shine. I would suggest that you book because it was busy. Also a lovely catch up with friends.

You are in for a surprise when you drive down Warrington Road as there are small businesses but then, there it is, The Barn Owl once known as the Admiral Benbow. We sat inside but there are pods along the canal. From our table you had a panoramic view across the canal, canal boats came and went. The food was freshly prepared and could not be faulted. The service was excellent, not rushed and you could ask for things to be omitted from your salad. The fish and chips were very good, crisp batter not greasy. Good portions. Give it a try!

Went here for the first time with friends who are regularly. I can understand why! Great reasonably priced menu, lovely food and friendly but professional service. It was lucky that we had booked as it was very busy. Situation on the canal is lovely and the property is attractive and well maintained. Good access for wheelchair users. Will definitely be back. Only negative was the customer who came in just before we left with a huge and hideous unmuzzled dog that he left alone on the terrace, fastened to the furniture, with a young child while he got drinks. Dog was able to drag the furniture. Along with other customers, when we were leaving we went via a different door rather than pass him. One lady was almost in tears.

Beautiful location, one of our favourite pubs to walk to through Spud Wood or along the canal. Great refurbishment and very friendly staff. We didn’t eat this time but the food did look very appetising. Lovely views of the canal but what really spoils it is the Covid style outside pods, you have taken away the outside seating area which always use to be full of people enjoying the sun and views.

We’ve been going to the Barn Owl for many years, since moving to Lymm in 2011. However our most recent visits (twice in a week, once with friends) have ranked amongst the best. Being outside the village centre it’s easy to forget the pub even exists but in our opinion it can only be described as a bit of a hidden gem. The food has always been decent and the prices remain reasonable for the excellent quality on offer. However it’s the service (which has never really been poor) which has really ‘gone up a notch’ since our previous visits. Every single member of the current team is polite, friendly and efficient and can’t do enough to ensure you enjoy your visit, even when you’re sitting in one of the outdoor pods and potentially “out of sight, out of mind”. The team here could teach other pubs and restaurants in the area a thing or two about customer service. They have genuinely got it spot on! Their hard work seems to be paying off as the pub was very busy on both occasions we went and will no doubt get busier over the summer months, given its lovely spot overlooking the canal. Golden Fleece, take note. Thanks again team Barn Owl. We will no doubt be back again soon and will continue to spread the word!

This place definitely qualifies as a hidden gem! We checked it out following a recommendation and really liked it. Has a lovely calm atmosphere by the canal and nice service too. They even have pods by the canal which you can reserve! Good menu with plenty of choice and the food was really nice and very well presented. Prices reasonable. The only unpleasant note was a sticker in the gents promoting a neo-nazi group. Let’s hope that is removed pronto. We will definitely be back soon.

Visited with my elderly parents. Me and Dad ordered off the senior citizens menu. Not because we wanted a cheap meal but because we wanted a smaller portion size. Our currys were huge - I would hate to see a full size one. It would have been OK but the curry wasn’t pleasant at all, being thick and dark. I normally finish my meals but I couldn’t even get half way through this plateful because as well as being huge it was not nice. Mum wanted something that wasn’t on the senior citizens menu so I asked if they could provide a smaller portion. Again I mentioned I wasn’t worried about the price but she didn’t want to be overfaced. What arrived was humoungous and Mum literally couldn’t face it. This place really seems to place quantity above quality. It’s the third time I’ve visited and it will definitely be the last time.

Went for lunch today with more family members on my recommendation, as I went for early evening meal a couple of weeks ago when it was excellent. Unfortunately today the service was nowhere near as good as two weeks ago. One of the main courses was missed off the order when the food arrived. Therefore four of us had finished our main course when the fifth person got his. Two of us wanted a specific dessert which we had previously had, which was delicious but they had run out of it. I hadn’t actually seen anyone else eating this dessert on this occasion so they can’t have had many in the first place. Sorry but wasn’t impressed today and the guests i brought for the first time were not impressed and they wouldn’t return.

We like the location and the views. We liked eating outside. The covid system of texting orders in was clever in theory but unfortunately didnt work and we had to catch a waiters eye after all. Be safe by all means but it did seem a bit over the top really as we were outside anyway. Parking good but would not have liked the tables at the side of the car park. Food was good and very large portions but they forgot my veg and i did too till it was too late. They also forgot the cutlery and someone rather sniffy with me when i went to get some as our meals were getting cold while we waited. Had to go out and wait again and food def cold before they arrived. Maybe give them out when take the order?Overall, we did have a good time but could have been better. Maybe it will get better as they get used to the new realities

This was our first click and collect hot meal during the Covid Pandemic. We ordered a roast turkey dinner, which came with cauliflower cheese, broccoli, peas, carrot and swede mash, Yorkshire pudding, new potatoes and roast potatoes along with a separate pot of gravy. The meal was laid out in a large foil container and it kept hot during our 15 minute drive back home. The only negative I found was the meal did not contain a little cranberry sauce. Perhaps this isn’t possible in the current circumstances? A very filling lunch and if we had been eating inside we couldn’t have managed a pudding. We did note a few people outside the pub enjoying a drink and about 3 tables occupied inside. This was just after the pub had opened for business. We would definitely recommend an online click and collect meal if you are, like us, still a little hesitant to eat out. Well done team Barn Owl.

We have visited The Barn Owl for food twice since the pub reopened last week. On both occasions the service has been excellent. Hand sanitizer at the entrance, newly refurbished toilets, staff wearing ppe, drinks and cutlery delivered on a tray and not handled by staff, tables socially distanced, table service operating, lots of cleaning evident during our visit. The food was excellent as usual and the senior citizens menu is still available and very good value with good portion sizes. Friendly staff and very attentive. I’d been to the Barn Owl quite often, and always found the portions a bit too hefty for me, although the outlook over open fields and huge sky, and the canal boats tied up alongside make it an attractive venue. So it’s been nice recently to have a pensioner’s menu, which has sensible choices and sizes of food, and sitting in the extension is very pleasant (until it rains when the noise is amazing!) If only parking was easier. I always seem to be on the lane a long way off in bad weather. Still a full car park and busy restaurant shows how popular the place is, so maybe I am odd about having reservations. Service is very good and staff friendly. I really can’t put a finger on why I’m not more enthusiastic.

Two friends and I went for a meal on Friday, one friend had never been before, we was looking forward to the generous portion meals but was disappointed with the poor size meals we were served. I asked our waitress if we had the pensioner specials by mistake but she said no the meals were correct. We have had the cheaper options before and our meals looked that size.Have never been able to manage a pudding on previous visits but we order apple pie and custard, but as with the other courses the portion size was very small ,the wide end of the slice was about 1 inch wide, more a sliver than a portion. There was a lot of custardIt’s a shame if things have changed in the past we have praised this pub to anybody that would listen but perhaps we will not do so in future

Been going to the Barn Owl for at least 8 years with my dad and there’s nothing nicer sitting in the sun outside with a ploughman’s. The food has always been good ,hot and plenty of it , but nearly every few months they change the way you are served ,you get a menu you don’t get a menu , you go to the bar to be served you don’t go to the bar you get your drinks yourself or the staff will come to the table . It’s changed again and I hope it stays the same for a while. We had spicy parsnip soup to start piping hot and very tasty, dad had corned beef hash off the smaller menu but was still a good size ,I had the seafood salad which was huge salmon, king prawns tuna shrimp lovely. We are regular customers of The Barn Owl and have always found it a friendly welcoming place. We visited tonight and were very disappointed with the whole experience. We walked in and found ourselves a table, no one came over to our table to take the order so I went up to the bar to get some menus. One member of staff was stood talking at the end of the bar and the other one was serving. We eventually ordered our food and when our starters were cleared we were then offered the dessert menus... before our mains... anyway The main meals came which were cold and not very good quality at all, the veg also looked like it had been sat there all night. This has put us off coming back here which is a real shame. One member of staff was lovely and helpful, the other lady behind the bar was more interested in chatting rather than serving the customers. Very unprofessional and not a very nice atmosphere, Won’t be returning.

You couldn’t make this up.On the Specials Board: “Monkfish Tails......£12.95”On the plate: one tiny monkfish tail on a large mound of vegetables, mostly potato.Customer to waitress: “The menu says monkfish tails, so I anticipated at least two, not a single tiny specimen”.Waitress to customer a few minutes later: “We are very sorry. It was the last portion. We will not charge for it.A short while later, a generous portion of monkfish tails arrives at an adjacent table where the customers arrived after us.Manager to customer: “I am serving at the bar. I have no idea what goes on in the kitchen”.Cook to customer: “It’s a misprint on the Specials Board. It’s priced up correctly for one tail. And I didn’t say it was the last portion.”Customer to cook: “ I see that you have just served at least two tails to another customer”.Cook (smirking) to customer: “You have to ask for more than one.”And as for the dessert: cold stodge described as Bread and butter pudding.Moral of the tail, as explained to the manager: don’t lie to customers because:• Trust in the staff and the business is lost forever.• They will tell their friends, who will tell their friends...• They will put it on Tripadvisor. Our group spent £150. Went twice last week with my 94 years young mother. Short notice bookings got us window seats on the Monday, but not the Wednesday. My mother needs the light to see her food properly, but the message is more that booking needs to be earlier on busier days for a popular destination. Food good. Service excellent on the quieter Monday, but a bit stretched on the busy Wednesday.Tho on the Wednesday, the kind waitress had my mother's prawn cocktail served on a dish with sliced up lettuce. In the dimness she could better catch the prawns. Overall experience merits the 4 blobs

We decided to try the Barn Owl after reading good reviews on trip advisor, impressed on arrival, full car park. Lots of people sitting eating on the canal side, full inside the pub. Only two tables available this was looking very promising, nice décor, polite waitress. My wife's choice was "Cock & Bull" Tender strips of rump steak, chicken breast, onions, mushrooms in a creamy peppercorn sauce. Not cheap at £16.95. I went for the homemade steak and ale pie. The first thing I noticed with my homemade pie was the portion of frozen chips. The second thing I noticed was my wife's face as she tried to chew the tender steak. She said the peppercorn sauce was pepper less. She managed to eat some of the chicken, but left the rest of her meal. I managed half of the pie but left the catering chips. The cold veg and peas also stayed on the plate. The waitress asked were we finished, but did not ask why we had left so much food. Another waitress brought the bill and again we were not asked if we had enjoyed our meal! I cannot understand why this place was packed because our meals were terribly, inedible .Whether the rest of the customers were having the carvery and just eating what was edible we don't know. As we left the building staff were confronting a party of approx. 8 persons saying that they had not paid the bill. How I wish we had done the same. One thing we do know is that the Barn Owl is not on our places to visit anymore !

Stumbled upon this place, so inviting to site outside along the canal for a drink that turned into a fish & chips meal, excellent service excellent food couldn’t be better.

We had the senior special three course meal. Supposedly smaller portions - certainly plenty big enough for us. Staff were pleasant and attentive, food was very good and choice is wider than most pub/restaurants including dishes that you don't see everywhere. Will definitely go again.

It’s a bit shabby and although staff very pleasant food average . It neeeds a refurb and looks more like a cafe than a pub. Location next to the canal would be good in summer but would not return

This was our second visit which turned out to be even more impressive than the first time. Service was friendly and fast. Food excellent, atmosphere very pleasant. We particularly appreciated that there was no music which made chatting over a relaxed mealtime possible.

We had a very enjoyable, tasty lunch, sitting at a great table overlooking the canal. The staff were very attentive, without being obtrusive.

My wife and I accompanied by our granddaughter and great granddaughter visited The Barn Owl for lunch today. We arrived to find the front door padlocked, however a short time later a man arrived and opened the pub. Four people walked in just before us and we followed them. We asked for a table and were told that there was only four tables in the middle of the main bar area available. We chose a table and asked the man who had opened the pub, who was behind the bar, if we had to order at the bar, he said , “no it’s table service” eventually after asking for drinks a few times, a waiter decided to ask if he could help. We ordered our drinks and asked if we could order food to which he replied “I only do drinks”. The drinks arrived and again we asked if we could order food, “someone will be with you shortly “was the reply. By now over half the tables were occupied and most of them had ordered their food. As we had a three year old with us who was getting fed up with waiting,we decided that we would pay for the drinks and go elsewhere. The man behind the bar, who I guess was the owner, was far from impressed and snapped back that they only had one person taking orders and they do it by table numbers. I explained that everyone who had ordered food came in after us. He was not interested. Then because he could not find our bill, he said

Had lunch here today. What a lovely setting right on the canal. Had a table overlooking the canal so had wonderful views whilst we had lunch. This pub had a senior citizen menu which we chose from. I had poached salmon and hubby had corned beef hash. Thoroughly enjoyed both. Then for dessert we had meringue with berries and fresh cream and apple pie and custard. All for £8.25 each. Total bill for meal, drinks and coffee was £29.00. Good value for money. Had our coffee outside on the terrace to watch the ducks and boats going by. Stay friendly and helpful. A very comfortable dining experience. Will definitely be going back. Food is served up to 2.30.

My husband and I have enjoyed summer canal side drinks and lunch with friends here so it was a no brainer to choose The Barn Owl for a 60th birthday get together for 12, mid week. The newly refurbished Terrace room was warm, cosy and private. Service was efficient and we were made to feel that nothing was too much trouble. All our meals were delicious (as I knew they would be!). Free bottle of wine for my husband was a lovely surprise too.

Had a very good Christmas meal here in early December. The food was excellent & could not be faulted. There was a bit of a mix up on arrival since although we had booked & specified an area for preference of table. Unfortunately, someone else with a similarly name had also booked but had arrived before us & been given our table. No matter, the management sorted it out satisfactorily which is a sign of a well run establishment. It was excellent & we will return.

We arrived at 12md, pre booked a table. We were welcomed and shown to our table, our drinks arrived and we ordered from an interesting menu. This was my 4th visit, at all occasions the food had been good quality and well presented, the only gripe was the slow service. This time, however, service was more prompt, the Thai curry was tasty and nicely presented, my friends lasagne was likewise, as was the sea bass and vegetables. This is a quirky and interesting place to eat, I would recommend it and would certainly come again.

What a delightful pub and restaurant. There was a good menu with plenty of choice. The food was delicious. The pub is situated right on the side of the canal, so would be lovely to visit in the summer. We will certainly be going back there.

Popped in today place quite busy. Thought we would have to wait but waitress came straight away to take drinks order when they came back took our food order straight away. Our starter arrived and we both has black pudding, very enjoyable, followed by the Sunday carvery which we had to go get ourselves, typical of all carvery food.

Food good, especially the carvery. Staff good. Location and pub itself lovely. Price for a single gin and tonic is £4.70 :( . Watch out for drinks prices though the wine was expected price. Gave poor review only based on drinks. Owners need to stop being greedy.

I visited here for the first time last and & I am still how come I have never heard of this place despite living within 15 miles of it for most of my life. it is in a fairly remote location but clearly other people are aware of how good it is because it was very busy on a wet Friday lunchtime.

We’ve always loved going to the Green Dragon but last nights experience was spoilt by the attitude of some of the serving staff. Always had lovely smiley staff previously but not so last night. One young woman was positively unwelcoming and not very friendly. Would always give GD 5 stars before but this spoilt our experience last night.

Called in for a couple of drinks whilst waiting for a train. Excellent service and, considering it's a hotel, very reasonable prices.

I used to love this pub but everything is now so average and still expensive. I took the dog and the pub itself is still nice to be in but it's not good enough for the cost. I had a mixed grill £18, no better than anything I'd expect in Weatherspoon's for half that price, dry chicken and rubbery meat reminding me of the old little chef's. The beer was over £6 a pint, there's just no point in going into this pub anymore.
