Disappointing compared to previous visits . Arrived to be told that our table would not be ready for about 15 minutes . Sat at the bar , ordered a pint of pale ale & rose wine £22 , to then be told immediately that our table was ready ?? Not a good start . Food was okay but not sensational . I would say previous visits were better . Service was too fast , we asked for the experience to slow down , overall probably six out of ten , wasn’t great value for money .

It doesent get better than this. I dont have the words to do it justice. Fabulous food (shout out to the prune soufle desert), excelent unfussy service (complementary potato side order because it was 'slow' in coming - we hadn't noticed) in a great location which sadly the weather stopped us taking full advantage of. A birthday treat to remember.

This is an amazing place. The food, service and atmosphere is fabulous. The team are so attentive and provide excellent recommendations throughout the meal with wine choices etc and their knowledge is exceptional. Food is wonderful and the presentation and flavours are excellent. A fantastic evening. Everything was of the highest quality, the venue, the food, drink and staff. We chose from the a la carte menu, with the highlight for me being the steak Tartare, simply stunning. The Sommelier was extremely helpful in pointing us towards wines that complemented each course. No hesitation in going five stars and will definitely return.

Having stayed and dined at the Hall earlier this year, I wanted to try the Barn and was not disappointed. They had a midweek menu on offer along with the a la carte. Great value for money. The same fantastic quality accompanied by delicious tasting bites between courses. Comprehensive wine list at sensible prices. Lovely team of staff, very friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Well worth a visit.

This was our first Michelin Star experience and it showed. We had the 3 course set menu and the food was rich, yet with delicate flavours. The starters were small and intricate and left plenty of room for the mains, we had the beef and the lamb roasts and the meats were succulent and flavourful, cooked to perfection. The sides were plentiful and delicious, each component was the best version of that food we had ever had. The carrots and parsnips cooked with star anise, cinnamon and nutmeg were unbelievable. The desserts were the final touch for the food and the flavours were so fresh and intricate. What makes this a level above though is the service, the staff were all incredibly friendly and thorough and talked through each item on the menu. We even received a card as it was my partner's birthday!

The team at The Barn impressed. A star-standard set lunch must be a challenge. Our Duck and Cod mains missed the mark slightly on the appearance side but clearly won on taste, texture and freshness. With great service and a nice ambiance, they were winners.

Booked as a treat for a friend. Arrived early and shown straight to the table where we expected to be offered a drink. We were offered water but had to ask for a drinks menu which came eventually with the lunch menu. Opted for mocktail of strawberry fizz but decidedly off in flavour combinations. The canapes looked delicious but disappointed in texture, the smoked trout base being overwhelmingly doughy. Sourdough bread and herb butter both delicious. Starter of seam bream and tomato was delicate and tasty. Mains of roast sirloin of beef and Herdwick lamb shoulder were lacking in seasoning and the roast potatoes were terrible. Couldn't face dessert but the coffee and Petit fours were pleasant. The service throughout was sloppy, either too fast or too slow. Overall not a good experience.

Visited this place for the first time recently and we were extremely impressed. It’s great to have the options of a set menu or an a la carte. I chose the set lunch menu and my partner opted for dishes from the a la carte. As a coeliac it is tricky eating out but the waiting staff were really reassuring that all dishes could be adapted to be gluten free. We were served some canapés followed by homemade focaccia and the gluten free bread was very good. We both thoroughly enjoyed all of our dishes and the service was first class. Highly recommend!

For a 1* Michelin restaurant, the midweek deal they do is fantastically good value. Compared with other 1* places I've been like The Angel at Hetton, Rogan and Co. and The White Swan at Fence I'd say it's my favourite. Been about three times in the last year and the last couple of times by train from Liverpool Central (you get off at Town Green and then a 15-20 min walk). Would easily go once a month if we didn't live 50-odd miles away.

Special occasion meal for our family, the fourth time we have visited, this time unfortunately not up to the previous standard. Not a problem at all with the staff or the service as would hopefully be expected. We all dined from the set menu only for the reason that the offering was more to our taste than the a la carte, we expected that the portion size was not for the hungry diner but the options were limited, the charcuterie has previously been exceptional this time was inedible unless you needed a flipflop repair, the bread and wild flower butter had been out of the fridge for hours needed chasing around the board before being applied to the bread. The main course arrived timely, my cod was minuscule and cold as was the rest of my meal, my wife ordered chicken which she thought was mediocre with no finesse to the rest of the plate. The desserts were the best part of the meal and almost made the expensive bill acceptable. Two of our party of four were unwell after our meal and it makes wonder whether it was something we had eaten, who knows, we will not be returning. The emphasis at Moor Hall is now obviously on the two star offering at the expense of us poor mortals, it’s a shame.

I went with my family to the Barn for Sunday lunch and it was an excellent experience. Good table with views to the country and lake, and lots of natural light. Owned by Andy Bell of the AJ Bell Investment company in Manchester, the Barn has one Michelin star for food. The set menu offered an extravagant courgette and celery soup with colourful flowery adornment. This was followed by a delicately flavoured and cooked cod with a cream sauce and roast fennel. The meal was rounded off with a crispy sugar snap topping to a woodruff ice cream. It's on the pricey side but it's well worth a visit for a special occasion.

The flavours and quality of food were phenomenal and service also very good however the portions were too small which really hindered my enjoyment of the night. I understand it’s fine dining however it was only 3 courses and the portions were more akin to a tasting menu where you’d have 6+ courses. There are only 2 side dishes which are on a separate menu so there isn’t really anything else you can order and the main was about a 1/6th of a chicken breast. I think there is some work to be done here. The cheese board was taking the mick a bit, adding £6 and there was hardly anything on there! I’d rather have paid more of an add on and actually got a decent bit of cheese.

Phenomenal experience with fantastic service, and for what you get isn’t exactly that expensive when you sit and enjoy the whole experience! I’ve had more expensive meals that have not involved as much as the Sunday Dinner Tasting Menu, that you receive her! The servers are warm and welcoming, with impeccable knowledge whilst delivering the meal and what everything is. The food is full of flavour, rich and just spectacular. You can see why they have a star. That being said, the experience isn’t overbearing and is somewhat laidback and causal, something you could do more often and enjoy. It’s not something that would have anyone feeling out of place, but more welcoming and just wanting people to enjoy amazing cooking and experiences, together. A skill that is hard to do!

The food was ok but the service was dire. We waited 30 mins for our main course and didn’t have any wine in our glasses for the entire main course. We were told we weren’t allowed to our our own wine but we had finished our meal before it was poured. Also the serving person told us what was in the meal but was stood behind me so I didn’t hear a word. We waited 20 mins to be shown to our table and waited an eternity for a drink before our meal. If I was. Michelin inspector I would take their star back. Pretentious and daffy. Not one person asked us if everything was ok

Despite it being a busy Easter Sunday, my wife and I enjoyed another wonderful meal prepared and served by a talented and cohesive team. The service was as always, attentive yet unintrusive and flowed perfectly as did our meal which was beautifully prepared. On a separate note, I felt sorry for the restaurant manager who had had to ask a party of diners to vacate their table as they had been seated for substantially longer than the time allotted. Sadly, they spent their remaining time at the restaurant in the downstairs waiting area creating quite a negative vibe for those of us who were just arriving. The team handled this professionally but should not have been put in this position by the entitled attitude of this particular party.

This was my first visit to The Barn at Moor Hall. I was with three friends, two of whom had eaten here on several occasions, and at the hall, so I was looking forward to a wonderful experience. We arrived at 7:45 for our table booked for 8. After being seated at 8, we then waited one hour and fifty two minutes for our starters. Having asked the gentleman/staff member in the black suit if there was a problem, his reply was, ‘I’m sorry, I’ll be with you soon.’ No further explanation was provided. He wasn’t rude, just ‘concise’. It was evident that other customers were also waiting, anxious to receive their food. When asked again if there was a problem, the staff member returned with his pen and pad. Finally, after 35 minutes I received my starter - Quail filled with wild mushrooms, crispy leg, quinoa and wild garlic - that was presented as expected. I would rate it 6 out of 10. My main was Saint sever guinea hen breast, and leg, potato, onion, stuffed leek and morel. I would rate this as 9 out of 10. For dessert I had Forced Yorkshire rhubarb with ginger, almond sponge and milk ice-cream. I would rate this 7 out of 10. My friends had the same dessert but different starters and mains. The sommelier and staff serving the food were informative and professional. The ‘let-down’ was the length of time we were left waiting on our arrival, to order our food, the length of time receiving our food, the lack of attention when our wine glasses were empty; wanting to order another bottle, and the lack of explanation for the ‘late service’. The impression I had was the mood in the restaurant was dim this evening. A very expensive meal matched with a disappointing experience…

A great meal with excellent service throughout. We were given a voucher for moor hall at Christmas which we were unable to use within the year time frame given. We rang up before the voucher expired and the team kindly extended the voucher for us. We arrived shortly after our booking at a few minutes past 6 and unfortunately due to a busy day our table wasn't ready. We were told to wait downstairs in the lobby area. This wasn't the greatest start, but been in hospitality myself, know that these things happen. We were quickly put at ease as we were told our table wouldn't be long and we're brought a complimentary glass of champagne which was excellent. Once into the restaurant the food was amazing as expected with all courses been superb. The sommelier was also excellent and the bottle of wine we had was amazing. Beautifully located lakeside, adjacent to the stunning Moor Hall, this Michelin Star restaurant, as you would expect, serves incredible food in a casual atmosphere. On entering the sympathetically restored barn building, the ground floor displays a variety of meats and cold cut storage, giving a teaser of what is on the menu, leading to stairs (and a lift!) to the first floor restaurant, a modern open space with the open kitchen at the far end, enticing you with a whole host of delicious smells and sights! We had the scallops and duck liver parfait (new to the menu I believe) for starters, both of which we highly recommend, followed by the Blue Grey Beef Sirloin and Lamb, again both perfectly cooked and we ordered an extra side of Crispy Potato Terrine, recommended by David…..GREAT recommendation! We were looked after by both David and Veronica, making the evening an enjoyable, relaxed experience (Thank you both!) and would definitely return!

We arrived 10 minutes late for our booking after an horrendous journey but this didn’t initially seem to be a problem. Given the drinks menu but not the food menu-as obviously their intention is to milk money from customers. Made our order and the courses weren’t very quick arriving but this wasn’t a problem until later. When ordering desserts my wife was told she couldn’t order a soufflé as it takes 15 minutes to cook and we would have to vacate our table soon. She wasn’t happy but ordered something different and we ordered teas/coffees at this stage as well. More than 17 minutes later our desserts arrived and a bit later the teas/coffees. Just after the drinks arrived we were told that they would need the table back in 5 minutes but we weren’t offered anywhere else to drink them. The waiter had been quite superior in attitude all evening but this spoiled an expensive meal for the five of us. I totally accept we were late but the starters were very late arriving and with better service there would have been no issue. Left with a bitter taste which wasn’t due to the food.

Really struggle to see how this place has gained itself a Michelin star. I’ve been to hungry horses that have better service. There is no atmosphere and the price for what you receive is astronomical. They clearly ride on the back of Moor Halls Michelin star (outstanding restaurant). I have been twice now and have been disappointed both times. The food isn’t bad but the overall experience is nothing better than your local restaurant. £500 for two and we come away hungry and really annoyed at the service. Two thumbs down.

Excellent start to the meal. I had duck parfait starter, my favourite dish. I enjoyed my cod main. The Sunday roast style main was alot of food. Glazed carrots were amazing. Some of it was salty. Not balanced if you're looking for something to cut through the richness. Childrens menu wasn't good. Chicken goujons were dry, tastless coating, no veg or salad on the plate, I regretted trying it. Spaghetti bolognese was salty. My son just picked out the spaghetti. It ended well for the kids who loved their desserts. For me and my husband it went downhill from the main. Until this point we would have returned. We ended up with 2 issues. 1 was how thirsty we ended up, the other was with one particular member of staff. Now, this was our first time visiting the The Barn, we got it wrong and thought it was a tasting menu, that's what we're used to in other places, so we ordered 3 courses at the start. Half way through the main we were getting full and didn't want dessert. Luckily they came back and asked if we wanted dessert, phew! So we said no, kids said yes, we ordered tea and coffee instead, the hot drink snacks are amazing. Unfortunately, by this point we're getting very thirsty, the kind water can't quench. Clearly the salty dishes were kicking in. We were still thirsty hours afterwards. When the bill came, we were billed for what we asked for on arrival, not for what we ended up having, had they plated the cheese board I would have paid, but we made this change in good time, I even pointed out we had ordered on arrival but were too full and I apologised for changing our minds. Not a problem for anyone at this stage. Our nice waiter obviously had to escalate the bill correction to snr staff. Wow, she wasn't happy. She needed a manager to authorise it. While she's stood waiting for him she kept giving our table the side eye, lol. The new bill was still wrong, I didn't say anything because it had taken ages to come back and was clearly a huge hassle for them. The lady who redid the bill and came to take payment stood there giving me looks, held a tight lipped 'smile', generally came across as extremely rude and unprofessional, and for some reason she didn't speak to us. I wasnt sure of contactless limit so I asked, she didnt say a single word, just kept her lips tightly closed, slowly reached out her hand, took my card out of my hand, put it in the slot, she really didn't say a single word the whole time 🤣, it was weird and rude. The same lady took our order on arrival with a smile and without any communication issues, she just turned into a mean girl at the end and couldn't bring herself to utter a single word to us. Honestly, we wouldn't let rude staff stop us from going back, because why should we miss out because of them, the real deal breaker was how some of the dishes were not as good as they should have been, children's menu didn't go down well, and we just don't want to be that thirsty again.

Very disappointing. Starters ok but main courses were average at best. Miniscule portions of lamb, beef and deer, which I guess is de rigour for Michelin starred restaurants. Accompanying vegetables tepid at best, one of which was sent back, but wish I’d done the same with the others. Service “relaxed” to say the least. Very nice and polite staff, but hardly busting a gut to get you served. Vastly overpriced for what is. service good, little slow to start, delicious amuse- bouche, and lovely starters. However, beef was extremely cheery and sinewy, very difficult to cut. Vegetables were lovely.

Firstly, Google shows Rooms/Service/Location ratings, when my review is about The Barn at Moor Hall RESTAURANT. So take my room rating as being for the food..... I treated my mother for her 84th birthday and we both thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our dining experience. Service from Ross was exceptional. Especially his ability to make my mother feel special. There was a younger server who served our main course and his dish explanation was a little rushed and less clear (-1), especially when explaining to an older person. The location is beautiful, and the ambience is perfect. Just enough noise to provide some warmth to the atmosphere, and never too much noise it is intrusive. We felt the wines by the glass were reasonably priced, although the red selection was a little unadventurous (-1). There were only two very very minor markdowns in regard our food; the turbot in my main dish lacked that 'butteryiness' flavor associated with turbot (-3). It was still a nice piece of fish, but lacked the WOW factor. And whilst the cheese selections we made were very good, I think the menu pricing should use the word 'slithers' :O Whilst we didn't want, or need, big chunks of cheese, I did feel the amount provided was edging on embarrassment, even for a fine food restaurant such as this (-1). I would have also like to have been offered some of the house sourdough (Which is EXCELLENT) to accompany the cheese (Of course I could have asked for it, but was quite full by that time). Whilst all the remaining food was excellent, I'd like to point out the potato side dish, which was an unexpected show stopper. Thinly sliced fondant style potato, arranged in four stacks, delicously crispy on the outside, and topped with the most amazing brown butter & hollandaise sauce. DO NOT MISS THESE ! I honestly think the pricing is 'spot on' for the overall dining experience and the auto gratuity of 10% sits well for the quality of service provided. Whilst I live in the USA, when I'm next back in the UK I'd probably try and arrange my schedule so I could eat here again (lunch or dinner).

Such a lovely place. I really enjoyed the scenery. One of the best dining atmosphere for me and the food was amazing on top of that. I ordered the seabream starter in the set menu and scallop from a la carte and I love both of them!

Mark Birchall describes the Barn, as his “neighbourhood restaurant”. If restaurants were people, then you’d certainly think of it as Moor Hall’s laid back kid sister. We’ve been to the Michelin 2 star Moor Hall several times, but this was our first visit to the 1 star Barn. It’s a sympathetic conversion of the building, with the restaurant on the first floor, which has retained its original architectural features, whilst creating a modern space, with open kitchen at one end. My only gripe is that some tables are unnecessarily very close together – ours only separated from the next by a glass screen. Service was friendly and very much on the ball. Unlike many one star places, the Barn has retained a traditional three course a la carte menu and is all the better for it. I do appreciate going to places which have a long intricate fixed tasting menu but, much of the time, I really just want to decide for myself what I want to eat from a menu. There’s a couple of snacks to start. A lovely single bite crisp tart, filled with smoked eel. And a couple of slices of house produced coppa. They are big on their charcuterie – on your way in, you pass a room with lots of sausages hung up to cure. An amuse bouche of an oyster mousse, served in its shell, was delicious. There’s another tart for one starter. It’s filled with beetroot from their own kitchen garden, cherry and a little salad leaf. There was supposed to be duck ham in there as well, but I couldn’t see or taste it. Beetroot will usually have an earthy sweetness but I think they must have enhanced the sweetness, possibly with the cherry and was just over the “too sweet” line for my taste. A single, enormous, scallop was perfectly cooked and came with strips of kohlrabi, which gave a contrasting bitterness. Lemon preserve and sea buckthorn sauce both introduced sharpness, again perhaps a tad too much. We both went with fish main courses. Monkfish for one of us – quickly roasted so lightly cooked, just as it should be. It came with hen of the wood mushroom and crispy cauliflower, both of which worked well. There was also a spoonful of “grains”, almost porridge like and a light and flavoursome mussel sauce. Turbot, again perfectly cooked, comes with turnip, spinach and a crab sauce, all of which work well with the fish. We also took a couple of sides – cavolo nero with an anchovy and lemon dressing and a crispy potato terrine, topped with hollandaise. The latter, large cubes of thinly sliced potato, cooked and then crisped on all sides, may have been the best thing I ate all evening. To finish, cheese brought a selection of four. There was Hafod ( a Welsh cheddar), a perfectly ripe and runny Wigmore, Stichelton and a goats cheese. They come with house made crackers, a mini bara brith and chutney. This is the height of British summer, so strawberries seemed absolutely right on the other side of the table. These come from Tarleton, just 15 miles down the road, and were perfectly ripe. Also on the other plate, a set buttermilk custard and a shard of meringue. Coffee was top notch and came with an excellent chocolate truffle and a blood orange pate de fruit (that’s a posh jelly to the likes of me). Nice evening, with good food, even if not one with any big WOW to the food.

Decided to have the Steak & Ale Pie. Would have given the meal 5 stars if the pie hadn’t been microwaved. The pastry was very rubbery and inedible, however the meat inside was good. Staff was friendly and the service was quick. If we do return I would try another dish. Easy to park.

We were visiting WWT Martin Mere and were looking for a cafe for breakfast to set us up for a day of walking and bird watching. We found ‘The Farm’ online and headed there on our way. When you arrive it doesn’t look much from the outside, but once you walk through the door it is welcoming, cosy and has a lot to offer. We ordered Full English Breakfast and it was very tasty and nicely presented. It came with toast which was a nice bonus, as so many places now you have to order it separately. There is a small farm shop which forms part of the cafe and has a nice range of local produce including small gifts and cards. We bought a couple of Rhubarb Pies to take away with us and they were delicious too! Would definitely recommend this establishment.
