We live on the south coast and booked due to reviews and dog friendly. When we arrived accommodation was in grotty looking buildings overlooking old tables, bins and concrete car park. No lights on and one cat! Proprietor was short with my husband when showing him round. Cook came out to eat complete with 2 beers and a dirty apron. She sat at outside table. Husband said inside pub was taken over by huge TV showing football. Who writes these positive reviews? We did not stay and drove home.

We own a local farm and do not have the space to host dinners for our guests; family and friends, so we chose The Barleycorn Inn as it is in walking distance. We had booked for 15 people, but ended up with 18! Not a problem. We had an excellent chicken supper with all the trimmings followed by what was probably the best apple crumble with home made custard we have ever had. Magnificent welcome, superb service and excellent food. In fact several of us stayed in the bar all evening after our meal. What a wonderful evening. As the saying goes….. we’ll be back!

We visited this charming public house with friends, last week for Sunday Lunch. The pub was very busy, mostly we think with local people. We had a beautiful meal: My husband had the Lamb roast, I had Chicken - both were excellent. I particularly enjoyed the traditional cauliflower cheese side! This is a friendly and well appointed, dog friendly pub, which is great. It also has a Bed & Breakfast in its old Coach House which has been refurbished. We didn’t stay there on this occasion, but we will when we visit next time. The Landlord and Landlady, Tom & Terry, went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They say this pub is the beating heart of the village community and from what we could see, it really is!

We visited the Barleycorn for a fish and chip supper. The food was ok, the fish and batter were good, but an extremely small portion of chips. Luckily my wife doesn't have a big appetite! However, the atmosphere was appalling. We did not appreciate the proprietor (we assume) walking around in very casual shorts which constantly required adjusting and wearing, some of the time, flip flops; at other times nothing on his feet! For the 'pleasure' of the evening's experience we paid £47.00, two fish and chips, one pint of beer, one large white wine. We have been visiting the Barleycorn for 25 years and this rates as the worst ever visit. Needless to say this is the final visit.

Probably the worst pub I have ever been to. A nice sunny evening. This pub advertises outside space. There outside space in the smoking den is covered with pigeon excrement & stinks of ammonia. The car park had dogs poo. The inside area smelt bad but not so bad. We should have gone with our instinct then & run. The food we ordered was supposed to come with salad & coleslaw. No coleslaw & a handful of brown warm lettuce was supposed to be a salad. The cutlery was dirty and I had to ask for clean. The staff were unprofessional and vaping at the bar. On the phone to the manager constantly, trying to sort out problems. Couldn’t get out fast enough

We visited on a Sunday evening and chose pizzas. They were OK but didn't taste anything like as good as they sounded. We ordered sweets and waited over 30 mins for them to arrive, we were very close to walking out when they arrived - the sweets were good but not worth such a long wait. The single member of staff behind the bar and waiting on was pleasant enough when he could be bothered to look up from his phone but that wasn't often.Slow and disinterested service isn't a recipe for success.

I don’t know where to start. We booked this literally last minute to break up the journey back to Suffolk from Cornwall. And what a GEM it was. Andy and Ness were so welcoming. Excellent rooms. We wanted for nothing. The restaurant was fantastic I had steak and ale pie which was the best tasting pie I’ve had for years and my husband had the pizza which was also one of the best looking and best tasting we’ve ever had. The weather was fantastic so sat out in the evening with a few beers (as you do) and the hosts were out also mingling and drinking with the guests and locals. Their kids who helped in the bar and all the other staff were amazing. Thank you all for making the end of our holiday “worth it” If we ever visit that part of the country again we will definitely make this a port of call. Thanks again guys. Julia and Rod cousins.

We needed an overnight stop in the Marlborough area, and we picked The Barleycorn by searching on the Net. It proved to be an excellent choice. Our room was simple and clean, and everything worked. We ate in the bar - It’s a proper pub, with an open log fire in the bar and a good atmosphere, lively but relaxed and not overcrowded. It’s family-run, and we felt completely welcome at every stage. The food was good, locally-sourced where possible, and we enjoyed our meals.Breakfast the next morning was equally good: generous, well-cooked portions, served by the friendly landlady.Although it was a grey Wednesday evening in January, the pub was busy with a good mix of customers, and it was nice to see a traditional country pub thriving. If we pass that way again, we would look forward to staying at The Barleycorn, especially in the summer when there should be some pleasant walks in the area.

We decided to have a one night stay in the Barleycorn on a Saturday night so we could wake up for an early breakfast on the Sunday then make our way to the Savernake forest for a refreshing walk and from my interest as a tree nursery manager catch a glimpse of some of the ancient oaks located in the forest. Our stay at the Barleycorn was fantastic and I can not fault a single thing. From the moment we walked through the door the greeting was welcoming from a nice young lad and as we had arrived early we decided to sit in the bar by the open log fire for a spot of light lunch,After our lunch we were given our bedroom key and escorted to our room which along with all five bedrooms stands in it's own courtyard with private parking which I thought was great. Our room was snug and very warm with a beautiful en-suite bathroom and peaceful. We decided to book an evening meal and again we were seated as a couple near the open log fire which created the perfect atmosphere a long with some of the very friendly locals in the pub that night. We both opted for a three course evening meal with a bottle of wine and pushed the boat out by ordering fillet steaks as a main meal.Well I take my hat off to the chef as these steaks were cooked to perfection which means medium rare in my case and all three courses were served within the period of an hour,we were treated like royalty. The next morning we enjoyed a proper cooked breakfast. I will finish by saying a big thank you to all the staff.

Arrived to be told it’s lamb or pork. That was it. Nothing else available. Ok, so we tried it. Very poor. Stringy lamb, over cooked vegetables, small cold plates. And very uncomfortable chairs. Service not great either. Were told kitchen is too small to do anything else. So how do they do this extensive menu at other times? Altogether a very disappointing visit and will certainly not go back.

A real gem in the middle of our backroads jaunt back to Oxford. Just pulled in because it looked interesting. The Best thing was the people, second was the beer selections, third was the food; but all were above average. The manager/owner/bartender(?) was very friendly, made beer and food recommendations. When we asked about a beer, he described it, then gave a sample. I had a Tikka Masala pizza (strange but good), but others had more traditional pub fare (fish and chips, eggs and ham, meat pie of water buffalo). Everyone more than happy with the experience. My wife and I agreed that it was our favorite pub experience of our week in England. More authentic, not trying to be a gastropub with the accompanying high prices and small food. Mention should be made about the splendid efforts and kindness shown by The Landlady, Vanessa (Ness to her friends), and her crew at the Barleycorn Inn, my brilliant local pub, during the recent snowy inclement weather. Not only managing to still provide quite spectacular beer and a full delicious menu, Ness was supreme in finding accommodation for all the stranded travelers and tourists who were blocked in by huge snow drifts. Ness and Elliot went way beyond what was required and, for me, earned my full respect and admiration. They even rescued a single lady traveler in blizzard conditions, from another village five miles away. Very well done to all at The Barleycorn Inn, for truly displaying that unique and British 'Dunkirk Spirit'. Do I suspect a 'Dunkirk Burger' being added to the menu?

Then, the chef came out and said he could probably manage another two portions and would supply us with some extra chips on the side. When the curry arrived it was mixed up with the rice which. I suppose, was passable. What was not acceptable was that the chips were virtually inedible as they had been reheated/refried. They were rock hard and hollow. Fortunately the rest of our experience of the hostelry counterbalanced this down side and on the whole our stay was enjoyable.

Nothing is too much trouble and specials menus are outstanding.. the chef really makes an effort to surprise you and love to know what will be next on the menu. If it's not on the menu you can always pre order

We are locals and having heard the barleycorn had changed hands yet again, we decided to pop in for lunch. Very poor choice on menu, no chicken choice, no fish only smoked salmon, only baguettes in terms of bread/sandwich, if you like pork, unlike myself its a winner as loads of it on the menu. I looked at the Sunday lunch menu in case we could come with the kids and again no choice much, not a child friendly menu, no chicken/turkey roast. The bar girl was nice but even the meal we ordered was poor. The smoked salmon had lots of skin left on was chewy and was pretty tasteless and the belly pork was nearly cold. We wont be going back. Very disappointing as its one of our local pubs!

Stopped for lunch on the way from Marlborough to Salisbury and really enjoyed it.Plenty of easy parking and a welcoming feel to the place, despite the small number of people there when we arrived, though it soon filled up. A lovely, friendly lady served us and we thought the fish and chips were excellent, no doubt partly due to the daily fresh fish deliveries they say they have. Clearly it's also down to the chef - the chips were also amongst the best we've had for ages and we loved their take on mushy peas (I think they were mushed up ordinary peas, perhaps with some sort of 'sauce' - we're both from Lancashire originally and, somehow, the proper mushy marrowfat peas in the south rarely come out well). We'll definitely try to go back.

Over the years this pub has had various landlords, some excellent, some not so good. Last year the pub was terrible - no decent beer, just a range of unknown "eurobeers" and shunned by the locals. Now under new management thank goodness, and very popular with locals and travelers. Excellent cooking, a good selection of proper beers and very pleasant staff. Having stayed here previously I know the accommodation is also very good although I did not need to stay this year.

Breakfast well presented, fresh and wide choice. Especially the fresh berry compote. Please if you live near..don't drive pass. Pop in and try..you will not be disappointed! Thankyou for making us feel so welcome. We will return

Myself and my two sons stayed at the B&B over the weekend of 21st May as we were in the area on family trip. The food was excellent (both dinner and breakfast), as was the bar, accommodation and service. I would have no hesitation recommending this establishment and would wish this family run business every success for the future. We will definitely be returning when we are next in the area.

Found this place by accident but what a find. Dead easy parking, a very friendly welcome. The room is incredible, SO quiet with great views. The bed is so comfy and the bathroom was spotless. Plenty of towels and toiletries, lots of tea and coffee too.Must also mention the food. Absolutely fabulous. Darren the chef takes such a pride in what he does and the home cooked dinners are fantastic at a really good price.Nice to see well behaved dogs allowed in too.The staff are all brilliant! A family run business and I wish them every success in the future. I live in hotels and cannot praise this place enough!!!!!!

We stayed at a local B&B over the Easter weekend, Manor Farm and were lucky enough to be recommended The Barleycorn Inn. We had a wonderful meal with my boyfriend commenting that it was the best steak he has had in a restaurant in a very long time. The Gray family took over in November 2015 with head chef Darren cooking brilliant meals. We found it to be a lovely pub with a friendly and hospitable atmosphere. Great wine list and service. We wish them all the best in their new venture and will no doubt be back again soon.

I've given a four star rating as I can see circumstances combined to make the evening maybe not quite that......Ate in a party of 17 in the side dining room. Food very good (dauphinois type potatoes to die for, and the best brownie I think I've ever had) but slow service of the main course meant it was cold by the time we got to eat it. Why was the beef carved and then out onto wooden boards????It wasn't helped by the cold rainy weather - every time the front door opened a howling draft reduced the temperature in the already cold room - it's been like this for years, so I don't blame the current newish proprietors but it would have been nice for some heat to have warmed the room. Drinks seemed very expensive.

I was really impressed by the people at the barleycorn Inn. They were really friendly and helpful and really cared about their customers. The food was Good. I had a smoked cheddar salad sandwich that was excellent. The bread was home made and really enhanced the sandwich. They also seemed to rally care about your experience. Thanks again.

There's a new team running the Barleycorn, and they seem like a great bunch. I visited today and it does need a bit of attention for sure but the welcome was very warm, the food great, the beer excellent and the open fire a real treat, especially as I had cycled there was feeling the cold a little. The rooms a pretty nice too. Very comfortable and surprisingly modern compared to the rest of the place.Good luck to you all with the new venture. I look forward to a quiz night soon.

We stopped here for 2 nights on a NVoucher deal. The room was spacious, and the bathroom looked like it had recently been refurbished. The room had the smallest tv ever on the wall, but as we were not intending to watch much this was not a problem. We ate in the pub on the first evening. It was very quiet, just a couple of locals in all evening (and this was a Friday!), but as our deal included a meal we decided to stay. The menu was quite basic, and even more so when we were told there were no chicken meals, no steaks and no belly pork. So it was chicken pie and scampi for mains!! The soup came with some lovely warm bread, but the soups itself was barely warm and tasteless. It was not a great eating experience, and the pub itself was cold. Breakfast in the morning was fine. The 2 guys who were running the pub (apparently the manager was away), were pleasant enough and seemed to be doing their best, but it felt like the pub had been run down and needs an injection of something to get it back on it's feet, as it has got lots of potentials, and could be a pot of gold...but not as it is at the moment.

I was travelling back with my son from Thruxton and decided to stop for dinner on the way home. It was getting near to 9pm so we decided to stop at the Barleycorn Inn. We asked if they were still serving and were told by the lady behind the bar that they had a limited range of meals from the menu. We both ordered sausage and chips on gravy. When the meal arrived we ended up with three sausages that looked like something from the Tesco value range, chips and a couple of table spoons of peas. There was no gravy. We asked the waiter and after about 5 minutes a small pot of very weak gravy arrived.if each meal had been )5 I would not have said anything but each meal cost £10.95 (I be surprised if it cost them £1to make it). Nobody asked us what our meal was like.I actually wish they'd told us that they were no longer serving.a truly poor eating experience.

Been here several times as very close to family. The pub is under new management and is undergoing a bit of a change. Gorgeous lunchtime menu, very well presented. Yes, some things may be a little "informal", but personally would rather that than give my business to an impersonal chain of restaurants. Sort out the decor a bit more and this will be the must go to place.

Friday lunchtime,me (eating) and only two others (drinking) in this otherwise high profile main road pub slap in the middle of a village with a 30mph zone.Very "temporary atmosphere" with no printed menu and a limited but reasonable selection of pub grub mains on the chalkboard. Two of the three real ales were not available (insufficient cellar back up ?) and all the pictures had gone from the walls leaving only the holes in the newly decorated plaster.Sort of thing that could happen if you left in a hurry ? Hope I am wrong....No matter, the food was acceptable with a good sized roast pork belly, bubble and squeak and veg with a honeyed gravy (£10.95) plus a half of Stella (£2.00) as I didn't fancy the Waddys Henry's IPA which isn't real IPA at all...and in a Brakspear pub ! Whatever next.

We had a family supper at The Barleycorn - we were much later to arrive than expected and it was well after the pub kitchen should have closed. Despite this we could not have been greeted or served in a more friendly way. The pub serves good beer and is a great place to eat pub grub. Lovely ham and eggs and although we were too full for puddings they looked great. Really nice to know that there are places left which will welcome a tired hungry and not particularly high spending family late in the evening. Thank-you.

I like pubs to do the basic pub food thing well, and the Barleycorn Inn plays that part very well. Not the biggest or fanciest menu in the world, but personally I hate pretentious pub menus - they nearly always end up being neither one thing nor another.

We had an evening meal here and we both asked for changed to the menu items. That was no problem and the food was great tasting and great value. The beer was great too. However what really made the difference was the girls who were fun and helpful. This is one area the is so important in hospitality. They should both be congratulated.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.
