Popped in for lunch on Saturday 17th Feb pre walk along the canal. On entering the pub we were welcomed immediately by the bar staff and given the food menu. I ordered ham, eggs & chips & my other half ordered the scampi along with drinks. Food arrived and it was really good, honest grub & very tasty. Lovely friendly staff & good beer & food, what more could you ask for con a pub?

Went here on Friday evening for my husbands works summer dinner. Had a great selection of home cooked pub grub. Opted for the prawn skewer starter and the chicken Caesar salad. It was delicious and well presented. All of the table had something different off of the menu and everyone said how good their meal was. Very reasonably priced and lovely atmosphere. Will most definitely be back again.

We walked up to the pub from the canal after seeing their sign by the side of the water. When we arrived the door was locked however we could see someone behind the bar. On closer inspection their opening times in the door differed to the ones on the sign. I called them to ask if they were opening 5:39 as per their sign by the canal or if it was 7pm as per the sign on the door. When I explained that they said different times I was told ‘No, it’s 7pm you must have read the sign wrong as that’s during the week, we’re not serving food tonight anyway’ then put the phone down on me! Rude! Picture of the sign below which clearly shows 5:30!

Visited this pub on our last o a boating holiday. It was a little walk from the canal up a hill to the main road. We noticed several other holiday makers also enjoying thewir last evening in thge pub. The landlords daughter was very chatty and made us feel welcomed in to the pub. We ordered a verity of meals, ranging from a T bone steak, sirloin steak, gammon and chilli and rice. One also asked for a side salad, which was plentiful. The food was cooked very well and going by the fact that all of us had empty plates was proff the food was very tasty. I would recommend visiting, but also to book well ahead of your trip as a couple of other boaters failed to get in.

Dropped in for a lunchtime bite and drink - was surprised at the Real Ale selection which was pleasing and well kept ,also the extensive menu with a lot of choice and variety . I chose the Shepherds Pie with fresh veg , which was a large plateful and very flavoursome and good value . It was quiet being mid January but was welcomed by the Landlord / Landlady and felt cozy . Could do with some more signage on the road / corner to show Open and Carpark at the rear of the pub

My friend and I went today to have a drink and lunch at the Barley Mow. We had never been there before so we thought we would give it a try. The website said it opened at 12.00. We arrived at approx 12.05. Everything was in darkness. We tried the front and back doors but they were locked. After about another 10 mins we left and found another local pub which was open. I had checked on their website before going to check the opening hours so I am a bit put out to find it closed. Not even a note on the door to say why.

It may not be the best in the planet in terms of infrastructure but I have always had felt a sense of belonging there. There is a great vibe, it’s not too crowded to be a nuisance and neither too quiet to feel isolated. They are a friendly bunch of people, there’s food if you want and a decent selection of beers, wines and spirits. Sonia and her husband Mike are lovely, efficient people and nothing is any trouble for them.

The staff are rude and seemed to go out of their way to make us feel unwelcome. They had plenty of seats, but told us our party was too big and they wouldn’t serve us. My family is pretty easygoing but the bar lady was very rude. It took her five minutes to acknowledge our presence and she wouldn’t even speak directly to us...just made a harsh comment in passing that she wouldn’t serve us. We had moored our narrow boat at this location, and they are the only restaurant in town so we were pretty much out of luck. Given the kids hadn’t had dinner yet, we ended up having to move to the next town over. All in all, if you can avoid this place, do so. They clearly do NOT want the tourists in their town.

Nice little place to look at but something missing aesthetically inside. Bar lady was brilliant (7.30pm on sat 8th June 2018).food was standard. The Lasagne was very obviously bought in and in no way was home made. Very dry and I am sure it was a ready meal tipped onto a plate. Chips were minimal in portion and frozen prior yo cooking which is always a turn off. It has to be said the steak on my friends meal was cooked to perfection but alas the same lack of frozen chips. Perhaps about 10 chips on each plate?. The bill was a shocking £50 for three standard meals and three drinks. Not a bad place at all but not really good either.

We moored up nearby and read the sign saying food was served between 7pm and 9pm on a Sunday but because they had quizz night they were not serving any food and there is no food establishments within working distance so we were stuck hungry. If we had known they were not serving food we would have had plenty of time before dark to boat on to somewhere else, they also did not seem to care the sign was wrong and just wanted us out. We got takeaway after calling around a lot and explaining the situation. The Singapore garden takeaway was excellent and they tried really hard to find us and the food was fantastic and cheaper!

Called in on the way home on the off chance it was open. I've been to a few Barley Mows and wanted to try this one. It never looks open from the outside and isn't always open when advertised. It's a small pub with two rooms and when it's busy you can't really move or have a conversation as you can't hear each other. But it's a great atmosphere, the staff are very friendly, and the food is exceptionally good value for money with a lot of choice. Am happy to have stumbled on this pub and will visit again.

it was 10 plus years since I last visited this place and it wasn't a pleasant experience then so when my friends decided to organise a meet here I thought it was about time I revisited this place. I loved the good old fashioned local pub atmosphere as I walked in and ordered my food. I opted for the gammon and chips with egg and was pleasantly surprised by the hearty fare put in front of me and the door step of delicious gammon. Its been many a long while since I've had such a simple dish that tasted this good. Well worth another visit just for that alone. I will certainly not be leaving it so long again before I return.

100 mile trip to visit mother to do the Christmas present thing required a lunch. I had given it some thought and decided to visit an old favourite of mine from when I lived in the area, The Barley Mow. We arrived at the pub and had no trouble parking, walked in and received a very good, happy welcome. Our table was set up ready and we were seated straight away and a drinks order was taken. Menu perused and four roasts and one chilli ordered. We all enjoyed our mains and four of us ordered dessert. Two apple crumble with custard, one jam sponge with custard and one treacle sponge with custard . All served quickly and with a smile. The portions are good, the food well presented, and the menu varied enough for all tastes. The only reason that The Barley Mow does not get five stars today is that the pub was very cold. Our party ranged in age from seven years to seventy years, and all said the same thing. Lovely meal, nice place, friendly folk.....just a shame that it was so cold inside. Turn the heating up and I'll make a return trip to get you a 5⃣ review.

Having read about the home cooked British cuisine offered, I was looking forward to some hearty warm food on a chilly June evening. My initial impression was the limited menu on offer. I am if the belief that eating out affords the opportunity to eat dishes I would not make at home. The menu choices didn't offer enough choice of items I would not make at home. Once we ordered my impression was of fairly tasteless food. Not on the list for a return.

Visited this pub on the return leg of a longboat holiday with family. The dining room is small so booking ahead definitely recommended, although they will happily serve food in the bar too, though this also is pretty compact. The pub is signposted at the canal edge, and knowing no different assumed it would be just a short way back from the water. It is actually not far short of a mile uphill all the way. In the pitch black, with an octogenarian and the only other signpost fallen flat on the ground this proved a little more of a challenge than anticipated. It is at the end of Mill lane, worth remembering if like us you expected it would be visible from the canal.Still, the pub can't be blamed for where they are! So thoroghly recommended from us.

On a weekend night this became a very busy pub and the landlady worked very hard to welcome and serve everyone who needed her attention. There was a lively atmosphere in the pub which appears a little bit neglected on the TLC front. We were a large party for food and did not have to wait long for the food to be served. Unfortunately the food wasn't home-cooked (as stated on website) and was mostly ready prepared. For ready-prepared food it was ok, but then the prices were too high and so were mis-matched with the quality. This is a very ordinary pub and ok to eat in but not for fine dining and a little over-priced for what is provided. However the front of house staff worked their socks off and maybe the home-cooking will get better soon.

Great value for money, with friendly bar staff.Loved the bar area, beer was top notch and parking easy due to a large car park. This is what going to the pub is all about, fantastic !

I am from Boston USA. Spent several nights here having dinner and a few pints. Crowd is great....Sonia and Mike the proprietors are wonderful. Just go there, be yourself and enjoy!

This is a local village pub and it is not a fancy gastro type place. However they do a very good home cooking type Sunday roast with a pudding for under a tenner. We have been lots of times when we didn't fancy the hassle of cooking and ave never been disappointed.Advise is to ring and book as they only cook a couple of differentroasts on a Sunday and may run out if you don't reserve yours in advance.I have never eaten off of the menu so can't comment on it. But the roasts are like your mums. And the landlady and barmaid always seemed polite to me. Perhaps they respond in kind to the way they are treated -which may not be the restaurant way.

We have eaten here a number of times and every time we have a good meal with good real ales.We will return as we are always happy with the food and drink served. It is a small village pub not a town pub/chain pub.

Nice little place from the outside however , the locals werent exactly friendly and the rather large bar lady was stuffing her face and rude to us when we came in, all be it not a good experience at all, prices are abit over the top for what we had but the food was okay to be fair , however we wont be returning on out journey back through !

As we worked hard to open Allen Lock and thought about where we would have our dinner we saw the sign on he side of the canal. We decided to find a mooring which was not too far away, the only problem is the banks are little overgrown and it was hard to find a safe place to jump.It was worth it though, the food was VERY Good, the pub warm and the people welcoming.

Went here on a Friday afternoon for lunch. The menu is varied with quite a few choices. It was quiet on the day we went. Food was good and service was ok.

We stayed here for a pit stop overnight when visiting family in a nearby village and this place didn't disappoint. We received a very warm welcome from the landlord and landlady and check in was a breeze. They have a great selection of alcohol and it was really pleasing to see a village pub so busy. The building itself is stunning and much larger than I thought it would be with an extended restaurant and outdoor area with seating. The room had everything we needed for the night, including a bath and a shower and it overlooked the town square which was nice and quiet. The bed was very comfortable and we slept soundly. Our room was number 2. The breakfast menu has something for everyone with a selection of cooked and non cooked options and you can tell quality ingredients were used. It was a shame this was a flying visit as the the evening and Sunday lunch menu looked fantastic and we will be sure to try these on our next visit. Overall we felt very welcomed and the pub has a very homely feel to it, we will be sure to stay again next time we are passing.
