Great dinner. Extensive range of food choices and specials. Good range of ales and ciders on tap. The food was great quality and good value for money. Large portions. I had mussels which were fab 😋 and the chips are fantastic! We sat indoors, very dog friendly, but they also have a good outdoor seating area.

Big let down . The berry sundae the cream was horrible like a fake cream never had anything like it , frozen fruit and two tiny pieces of meringue it was horrible !!

Was looking forward to lunch after reading reviews. I ordered lasagne and salad Andy ordered chicken burger and chips. Andys burger was lovely, chips were nice however my lassgne had no bechemel sauce and no pasta! Just dry mince with a large slab of cheese on top, no dressing on salad..just dry. The waitress when told it was inedible was lovely and offered me the menu to choose something else but it had taken so long to order the food (other tables were served with their food that came in after us, whilst we were waiting) we were unable to wait. All in all not a good visit, won't rush back......Shame.

My husband and I met a couple of friends at the Barley Mow in Wingerworth. What an amazing job they have done with the place. We all ordered different meals, all which were cooked to perfection! The waitress was super helpful and advised of the specials. All the food came out together and piping hot. We can definitely remind the pies and Cajun burger! The drinks were were fab and we sampled a few cocktails off of the new cocktail menu. Chan was great at advising on the drinks menu. We will definitely be returning!

We went out for Sunday dinner on Easter Sunday. We were greeted by a lovely decorated tables with napkins shaped like rabbits and chocolates on each place setting. In the middle of each table was a large chocolate rabbit. Once we were seated the waiter brought each of the children an Easter egg, which was very kind. The meal was delicious, the best Sunday dinner I’ve had in a long time. There was a wide selection of roasts to choose from too, plus you could add extras too it if you wanted. Some of the group had desserts and they all enjoyed those too. The staff were excellent and very friendly. I’ll definitely be back when I’m visiting family again.

Disappointing. Overcooked scampi. Fish was battered but grey inside. Tables too small, felt a bit cramped. The lady who served us was very pleasant, but the food needs to be better cooked and fresher. A very good outside decking under cover and good position in Wingerworth.

So first off the food is really really nice. We were sat on one of the 3 tables as you first walk in from the garden. No social distancing, no scanning and logging of apps, people stood up chatting crowding in for the drinkers (this is besides the rules been on every table saying tables only, no standing and please scan). The staff really didn't care. If you get a seat in the restaurant you may have a great visit (as I say the food is great) but listening to the language of the locals is not a good experience. 5 for food, 1 for atmosphere. Why book people to eat where people crowd in to drink.

We decided to support our local pub during this unusual time, when we walked in we was met by a young lad, who was very polite showed us to our table, we ordered our drinks and food. While we was waiting all you could hear was the bar man / manager holding court with a person that was sat down, as there is social distancing he was a distance away, so the conversation got louder. Our food arrived but there was something not quite right, so we told the young lad and he apologised, After we had finished our meal the bar man / manager came over to our table and asked if everything was ok with our food, so i explained that we had a problem with our meal, and he said that they was low on some items in the kitchen, so i said if we was told that when we ordered we would have ordered something else. He did not seamed that bothered. so we will not be returning anytime soon.

Being a little nervous about going out in the current climate I was talked into dining outside at the Barley Mow having been told it was quiet and suitable for social distancing. When we arrived it was busier than expected, which for someone like me who is quite dubious about going out at the moment could have been awkward. However, the team at the Barley Mow have done an amazing job at spacing the tables so far away that even a nervous dinner like me felt completely comfortable. The food was good with some good veggie options, strangely during covid most places seem to have stripped their veggie options. The service was outstanding the young lady who served us could not do enough for us, was professional, friendly and just an absolute pleasure. She even appeared from nowhere with a bowl of water for the dogs. If you are nervous about going out or you just want a good place to eat with a great atmosphere the Barley Mow at Wingerworth is the obvious choice, now I know why it’s my brother in laws favourite pub.

My wife and I booked a table for 7pm on a Tuesday. We walked into to a deserted bar at exactly seven o’clock with another lady also standing there waiting to be served. After an embarrassing pregnant pause of several minutes a lady showed up and eventually dealt with us all. It didn’t feel either welcoming or efficient. Things did improve thankfully and we enjoyed two lovely hanger steak meals (please see photo). Our initial request for two glasses of water with the meal had to be reiterated sadly. I am so pleased that this old traditional local public house continues to provide the community with a nice food and drink venue but there are other places nearby where the service is so much better currently. Hopefully we were just unlucky on the night we visited and things will be better next time. The food was excellent though as I have already mentioned.

Visited for afternoon meal with 2 grandchildren. Nice clean, comfortable place. In our opinion the menu didn't offer a wide variety and everything thing was overpriced. We all had gammon that came with propper home cooked chips that would have been nice if not covered in salt. Garden peas ok. The salad was a few leaves and nothing else. 1 grilled tomato. Gammon had a sprinkling of thinly sliced pineapple that was hard and tasteless. 1 of the gammons was over cooked and very salty. We did get a £5 discount we complained. But still dealt very disappointed with the quality of food compared to the price.

Visited with friends. I ordered macaroni cheese with added pulled pork. The meal was together in a dish (I should've ordered it separately) and the pulled pork was in big chunks in amongst the macaroni. Not really 'pulled' as such then. The 'crust' was basically a 1 cm heap of dried uncooked brown breadcrumbs resting on top. It was tricky to eat without it spilling everywhere. The macaroni itself was also fairly dry and I couldn't taste any cheese in it. The garlic bread which accompanied it was overcooked and dry especially at the edges.

With the amount allegedly spent on refurbishing. The ladies toilets were definitely not included and they were tacky at best before refurb and no toilet seat broke toilet roll holder and no light and peeling paint off tiles from.

My wife and I were regular visitors to the pub before the refurbishment where we enjoyed a drink and an evening meal. We revisited shortly after it reopened. We were both disappointed with the meals we ordered. A couple weeks ago we decided to visit again. It was a sunny Friday evening, and there was lots of people frequenting the pub. We had booked a table for 7pm. We arrived at 6-15, had a drink in the garden, then took our table and ordered our food at 6-55. We were told it would take about 30 minutes because they were very busy. This was acceptable to us. At 7-55 our food had still not arrived, so I complained. It arrive about 5 minutes later. My wife’s lamb was over cooked and her potatoes undercooked. My fish was very small and the batter was soggy as were my chips. The mushy peas were ok.

Used to live in Wingerworth and have visited the "Mow" on numerous occasions, since the pub has had a long overdue refurb we were keen to try it again, nicely presented, interesting decor, bright cheerful and welcoming staff, my wife and I had the chicken pie and the steak and ale pie, pretty basic stuff, not at all inspiring, appeared to be bought in pies, heated up and served, the meat in my pie was very overcooked not worth the £10.50, all in all looking at the menu gourmet prices for average food from our experience.

Dined here yesterday a few fellow work colleagues. Apparently, the pub has recently undergone a refurbishment, which is how they probably try and justify the overpriced food and drinks. Lager is more expensive than most town centre bars and pubs, and the food is way overpriced for what you get.

We Previously had a disappointing experience however both the owner and manager paid close attention to the problem we encountered and gave assurance that this was not the norm. We did re-visit, as it is local and we want to support locally. What a totally different evening we had, very relaxed atmosphere, friendly, welcoming staff, good selection of wine. Thanks very much, your attention to customer satisfaction and service is excellent, we were welcomed back and will now continue to visit. We didn’t eat this time but plan to in the future as the menu looked good.

Went for lunch today as a group of 10. The food was excellent and the service 5*. One of our group is gluten intolerant, there was plenty on the menu to choose from and the staff were very helpful. Fully recommend this pub, but it was quite busy, so probably need to book.

Wednesday lunch excellent 2 very tasty fish pies and at 2 for £12.00 good value for money, very accommodation on the vegetables I asked for Seasonal vegetables as well as peas instead of chips which was provided with no extra cost. Service ok but staff chatting over customers, this I do not like should be more attentive. "Service" constantly shouted by chef from kitchen which became annoying. Ladies toilets, one out of order with a scruffy had written sign (not got a pc?) on investigation I think the only problem was that there was no toilet seat as it flushed ok. In the other toilet the loo roll holder was broken and the toilet paper was placed on the windowsill so I had to stand up to access this, not great. We sat down before we ate having a drink in the sun looking at the overflowing cigarette butt holder on the wall this was 12.15 so start of service, maybe one of the chatting staff could have emptied this? Overall great food and lovely pub but needs better management, We go to their Sister pub The Bull at holymoorside which is much more professional,

Visited on a Tuesday Steak Night with our friends from Sheffield, who had been out for a steak in Sheffield the previous week where they paid over £100 for their meal. We had two sirloins one fillet and one gammon steak between us, with a pre meal alcoholic drink and a generous glass of red wine with the steaks plus a dessert and got change from £85. The steaks were all 28 day aged and were cooked to perfection. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I would have no hesitation in recommending the pub and will certainly visit again

Very disappointing visit to the Barley Mow. Visited with a friend and we were asked at 9.30pm if we would be wanting anymore drinks, we were a little taken aback, and actually thought it was 10.30pm. With the unexpected question we did say no, however 20 minutes later, we did decide to ask for further drinks. It was a really awkward atmosphere and we were told the till had gone upstairs which is why we were asked earlier. We were not pushy but obviously a little dismayed, the barman asked if it was cash and kindly said he’d go back upstairs to get the change. We were given the bottle of wine at 9.50pm, at 10.15pm we were advised apologetically we’d have to leave as we were the only people left in the pub. The barman was clearly embarrassed and gave us the impression he was following instructions, we were so surprised, but did leave with the unfinished bottle of wine duly re-sealed. I understand that licensing laws have been relaxed and pubs can chose when to close within greatly extended boundaries, however my experience has been that they tend to stay open to at least 11pm. The Barley Mows’ website clearly states “open til late”.

Went to Barley Mow Friday evening walked in and pub was full of dogs. I think an area should be no dogs say the back room for people eating. Not everyone likes dogs and I don't want to eat my food with a dog at the next table. Unfortunately it seems to be everywhere you go now. Sorry but for me food & dogs don't go together

Fantastic food! Cannot fault the food at all, vegan & coeliac catered for, though despite having notice, 2 vegans were left with left overs being recreated from previous days. Kitchen staff were over stretched because it its popularity, the place was full. It was a heck of a challenge getting to a table from the door and back and a wheelchair or pram would not have made it. We had a carry baby chair it was impossible not to swing it over peoples meals, fewer tables and a defined walk way is certainly needed.

The Barely Mow was recommended to me by some friends as being a great place for food and drink. I visited for the first time today and it will certainly be returning in the near future. Upon arrival I found an extremely clean and welcoming outdoor seating area of which we took the opportunity to soak up the rays with a drink. We ordered food and chose to eat inside as it had become slightly cloudy. We was seated in a comfortable little area near to the bar where we was able to have a good chat with the friendly bar and waiting staff whist we waited for our food. The Barley Mow offers 2 for £12 on selected menu items so as a party of 3 we decided to make the most of the offer and ordered 4 dishes(1 each and a 4th the share). Eyes bigger than the belly was definitely the case. Very generous portions, beautifully presented and amazing quality! Safe to say we had to ask for a doggy bag to take home the left overs as it was too good to waste! Overall the service, food and quality for money was outstanding. Thankyou for a great lunch! I will be sure to see you guys again very soon.

Having eaten on a number of occasions at The Bulls Head at Holymoorside we decide to try the Barley Mow as it is now under the same management. The menu was virtually the same as The Bulls Head and clearly indicated which meals were gluten free, or could be adapted to suit. Well done!

We visited one lunch time as we were in the area and had heard the place was under new ownership. We both ordered the chicken and mushroom pie. It arrived within a reasonable time and at first glance all appeared to look ok. All was fine with the exception of the 'star attraction' namely the pie. It was served in individual pie dishes. Chicken and mushroom in a creamy white sauce. The shortcrust pastry was ok but extremely thin. My chicken consisted of half a dozen pieces smaller than my thumb nail. There were more mushrooms in quantity, and please forgive me if I am wrong, but they were so tiny and uniform in size that I felt they had come out of a tin used for catering purposes. They most certainly didn't taste like fresh mushrooms. The white sauce was extremely thin. I also found it very strange to be served a jug of 'gravy' with a pie with a cream sauce filling but each to their own. At the time of ordering I hadn't appreciated that the pies came as two for £12 but saying this I do not feel that the pie should be any different than if only one of us had ordered it, which I am sure it wasn't. All in all very disappointing and my husband agreed entirely with all my observations. Just one further comment I would like to make is there were two members of staff on duty. The young man was extremely pleasant. The young woman we both felt had an attitude problem. We both said we had no desire to make a second visit.

Decided to try the steak night offer - we were very disappointed with the quality of the steak - which was VERY chewy. Even though we mentioned this, the response was one of apathy. Yes we will make sure the chef is aware, and same again when we came to pay. No offer of any discount or anything. Other restaurants would have made at least an offer of a gesture.

Visited for my wife’s birthday as this restaurant is quite expensive but very nice. Theres a big car park, there’s loads of places to sit in the bar and the restaurant is tidy and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful and they had put a birthday card on the table. Good low alcohol beer selection The food was delicious and attractively presented. My wife had the pigeon and I had the octopus which was a bit over cooked and tasters more like a bratwurst but surprisingly, with the other parts of the dish, tasted really good . We both had venison which was well cooked and good portion of new potatoes and courgette. My wife had the strawberry cheesecake and I had the peach Melba which was an interesting twist on the old favourite with warm peach slices, both dishes were tasty. My wife was given a plate with happy birthday on it with some brownie pieces and fruit and cream which was almost a sweet in itself. Not unique to Red Lion but why do restaurants take so long to bring the card machine? Will go again for another special occasion.

I love the old fashioned English pub in nice surroundings and this did to a degree meet all of that. The bar here is good with a great selection of craft beers, the abbey brewery one being particularly nice. The interior of this pub is a mixture of old and new but could i ask the owners to replace the worst wall paper I have ever seen in a pub. Supposed to look like stone with what appears to be a mock bookcase as part of the horrendous pattern this was a throwback from the seventies. It would not have been so bad had it not been put up by an amateur who left creases and miss matches all over. We came here for lunch which I have to say was very average. I had sausage and mash that wasn’t great. The sausage was the oddest I have ever come across and at first I thought it was one of those veggies things as the taste and texture resembled them. One of my friends had the duck burger and said it was delicious, the other two had the pub trades version of hunters kitchen which they said was very dry and both of them left most of it. Taking all into account including the outrageous price of pinot Grigio this vist was ok but it would need a lot of changes to compete locally and get me back again.

First of all 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Take a bow and give yourselves a massive pat on the back to the whole team. It is very rare I give a shout out to a small pub in the middle of know where that is producing such high quality food and of such a high standard. For lunch we were late but they went above and beyond and knocked up a fish finger sandwich and a chicken club with chips on sourdough. It sounds simply but it was amazing especially the bread, so feed that back to the bread supplier. Evening meal was beetroot tart for the guest and then the king prawn for me. Great to eat the line removed from the prawns, so many 5 star restaurants fail in this but this little pub exceeded expectations. Main was beef for the guest and monk fish for me again both delicious and pudding was carrot which again was great. Breakfast was quality produce and cooked fresh, again very well received. If you have not been, then I suggest you book in asap as this place if 5 stars, no sorry 6 stars in the food and service delivery. What a wonderful little pub that needs to be visited by anyone passing. Overall well done to all, even the guy in pot wash. 6 stars out of 5 from me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Nice pub in a location to match, by the river. Good pub atmosphere inside and a surprisingly big beer garden. Food was your standard pub grub, with a decent children's menu. Service was nice (however you could hear them talking negatively about other guests)
