The Barley Mow in Guildford

We were delighted to learn that Lee and his wife (formerly at The Donkey Elstead) are managing and running the kitchen at The Barley Mow. We were mourning the loss of The Donkey Sunday Roasts but we are now happy again!😀🥳 Fabulous, what a great community initiative this Pub is ❤️

Just had our Xmas staff party at the pub. Superb service great food and very reasonably priced. We will be back.

Good selection of quality food. Drinks are reasonably priced and staff are very polite.

What a waste it would have been if this pub had closed! With Helen at the helm, this pub is on a “winner” to start with! Helen is exceptionally good at her role with a very pleasant & kind manner. Making everyone feel welcome! All staff at the bar were jovial & seemed to be enjoying what they were doing in their role. Lee & staff in the kitchen are serving up some very enjoyable food & our lunch on Sunday was just lovely with nice roast potatoes & plenty of meat. We will be back. IGNORE THE OLD REVIEWS, it's great to see a pub reopening and making a go of things and serving the local community. Popped in for lunch mid week. Food, beer and service very good. Very best of luck to everyone - we will visit again.

This is a traditional pub with traditional food. Loved the beer here, not had that one before. Also loved the steak and onion sandwich with chips! The bar woman was lovely and friendly and this is a dig friendly place. Our dog got a lot of attention I have to say!

Where to start! Normally, if I have nothing nice to say, I tend to say nothing! However, the waste of money and rude comment at the end of a bad evening in this place, has been playing on my mind, so I am going to be honest and relay our experience as it happened. We were holidaying in the area, spotted this quaint looking pub and decided to go in for dinner. We received a friendly welcome from the lady working behind the bar. We sat out in their nice garden as the weather was fab. The lady came promptly, served our drinks and took our order. We had a busy day exploring and were all starving! Two of us ordered what the menu described as a pasta with prawns and seabass, in a creamy white wine sauce 😋. One ordered battered fish and chips and sausage and chips was ordered for a child. The food was delivered to the table very quickly. Perhaps too quickly for anything to have been freshly cooked. But that could be acceptable. We have all had frozen or pre-prepared food. It's not the end of the world! and we were all so hungry that we were very open minded. Frozen, packet, even tinned would have done, if it was edible! Unfortunately, the food was awful and would you believe? it was actually inedible! I have never been in that position before. Where every member of our group found the food so disgusting, that none of us could eat it! Imagine! 3 adults and one child, all unable to tolerate the taste. We all tried, because of hunger and well, you just do don't you! When food is served, even if you don't find it particularly tasty, you still manage to pick away at it and make a fair impression on the plate. We couldn't! Seriously it was terrible. The pasta was tasteless, mushy, clacky, the prawns were rubbery and cold. The white wine mentioned on the menu, might have helped to cover the awful taste, but they must have forgotten to add that. The battered fish had a very strange taste and the raw gloopy flour oozing from under the outer coating was simply too off to eat. Even the child's sausage and chips tasted terrible. Maybe the oil needed changing? I don't know. But when child wouldn't eat it and we couldn't eat ours, we all dived on his chips! Big mistake. They were not good. I actually felt embarrassed when the lady came to the table to do a service check. All the plates were full😳. So I apologised! I said I was really sorry, but none of us could eat the food as we did not like the taste. I guess what has egged me on to report our experience, was her response. "Oh I'm sorry" and off she went! She didn't care to find out what was wrong, why an entire group of 4, with 3 different dishes, did not eat any of the food. She didn't make any effort to see if she could rectify the situation, offer a slice of toast, a drink, nothing. That left a bitter taste. We paid the same lady, who made no further apology and we left. Then to add insult to injury, as we were walking to our car, through the hedge we saw and heard a different member of staff, I presume the cook, giving out about the waste of food at our table! She was asking who did we think we were and what did we expect, that it was a f.....g pub! No embarrassment there on her part! Did she think that her customers went away happy with that waste of food? It would have been more palatable if we had heard her cringing at the "waste" of money for those customers! It's a poor show when you sit in one establishment for dinner, eat absolutely nothing, pay for it, walk out like it's our fault! and then have to go and find somewhere else to eat on the way home😄. So anyway folks, in a nutshell! Zero stars for The Barley Mow if I could. We can all have an off day in the kitchen! But own up to it and don't blame the customer!

I had gone to the barley mow before never had a problem. When we came in this time we had hair in our food which doesn’t make us feel reassured that their hygiene in the kitchen isn’t great.

I didnt eat. But the staff are friendly and it's in a beautiful location. Nice garden for this weather. 👌🏻

1st time I had used the pub for Sunday Lunch, Food was fantastic, From the moment we walked in The Land Lady was so funny and made us feel very welcome, I really enjoyed my self and comes highly recommended..

Love this place friendly staff and customers great food

Came for a meal midweek in a largish group of 9. We had our own room and were met with a lovely warm welcome. The food was delicious and came all at once and the service was brilliant. A lovely warm cosy venue, highly recommended!

Didn't eat, popped in for a point and a packet of crisps as refreshment on a walk. Very pleasant pub with a nice garden and a car park. Decent beer, dog friendly, good seating outside. Can't comment on the food as I didn't have any.

Fantastic local pub with a brilliant and varied menu. The burger is a personal favourite of mine and is well worth adding the brie and bacon too.

Came here on a multi day hike a little early for dinner. They were booked right up, but went above and beyond to serve me even at their convience. Helped this hungry traveller!

Olde worlde traditional pub, friendly and efficient. Had lunch. Good value and great food. Specials today had a good selection as well as the standard menu. Opted for salmon and prawn starter ( very good) followed by traditional gammon, egg and chips (huge and also very good). I will eat here again.

Unfortunately a bit empty thanks Omicron!! Friendly and chatty bar staff and landlady. Look forward to getting back to the Barley Mow in "normal" times and looks to be a great summer pub!!! Thank you for being open 🌟

Fantastic festive family lunch here on Xmas eve. Sorry my photo was before the vegetables (broccoli, carrots and sprouts) were added. The roast potatoes deserve a special mention because they were absolutely gorgeous.

Love thus pub. Not regulars but always get a nice welcome. It's popular so parking is tight but you can usually get a space nearby. We had dinner this time. Good quality bar food nicely served and well presented.

This is my parents favourite pub Bob & Julia, Karen the barmaid always welcomes them with open arms and nothing is too much trouble for her. The food is superb generous portions and great value all home cooked well worth a visit

Food good but very long wait, about one hour. Only one member of staff so kitchen probably similar. Also extra bookings that day aggregated problem.

I took my parents here today for lunch at one o'clock. the food was varied . delicious, and good value. the staff were friendly helpful and welcoming . it was our first ever visit but have planned to return in May.

The Sunday lunch, roast beef was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were well cooked and the roast potatoes were to die for. The desert selection was very good and tasted as good. Service was excellent and very attentive, I thought overall very good value for money. I thoroughly recommend this pub.
