What a disappointment of a Sunday lunch at the Bankes Arms. The building is stunning as is whole of Corfe Castle, but forget ordering any food. Shown to a table with a very uninterested young lady, who pointed to a box with clip board menus. Bar area looked a mess, piled up glasses with no room to move. Staff chatting rather than clearing up. It's the first view for anyone entering the place! We had to ask to order drinks, placed our order for 2 roast lamb and 2 beef....... then we sat and waited. Oh and we waited. And waited for over 40 mins before 'we' had to ask can we have a drink & how is food order going. Food was poorly presented piled high topped with a yorkshire pudding. Meat on top of red cabbage & some other unrecognisable shredded vegetable. A carrot ? or suede 'baby food' puree spread across the plate. The roast potatoes were dreadful, clearly re heated in a deep fat fryer. The carrot & the parsnip were the highlight of the plate. The Yorkshire pudding was rubbery, cold if not stale. Meat was poor. Had the look for pre packed sliced meat. The cauliflower was lovely & cheesy. It was not busy, just seemed a bit chaotic and unorganised. The staff need to be given a bit of direction! The only thing we didnt need to sit waiting for was the bill, which arrived promptly after asking for it. I would suggest a calculator for behind the bar. Maybe a quick look before at the food hygiene certificate rating would have helped us. Such a shame 😪 in a prime location within this historic village with a bit of TLC, organisation, and a good Chef this could be a Star Attraction in this beautiful area. Come on 'Bankes Arms Hotel' - step up and show the visiting world how we can do things in the UK 🇬🇧

After visiting Corfe Castle, I went into the Bankes Arms and was immediately greeted by Zack who showed me to my seat. Then the lovely Faye took my drink order. I ordered the nachos with chilli beef and hoped for the best as it can be very hit and miss. Well, it didn’t disappoint with a very generous portion of chilli beef, guacamole and sour cream, jalapeños AND real cheddar cheese. It was delicious. I would definitely recommend it as a place to eat and will definitely visit again.

My wife and I have nearly stopped going out as we always leave disappointed, knowing we could have cooked better tastier food at a fraction of the cost. This restaurant has renewed our faith. It was fantastic. We were out for a drive and found this wonderful place by accident. There was a special Sunday roast menu, so we chose from there. I chose the crispy pork belly, it was fork tender and delicious with a strip of the best crackling I have had in ages My wife had the roast beef, which was cooked perfectly. We ordered a side of cauliflower cheese and there was easily enough for two, we also ordered a side of chipolata sausages and there were tons in the bowl We could hardly walk it was so filling. Sorry about the photos, it was so nice I started mine before thinking about taking a picture

Stopped here for a birthday meal. Totally feel like we were ripped off, the menu described a Rib eye steak, which was the most expensive item and upon arrival it was so thin it did not resemble Rob eye at all. The service was slow, we asked for a drink that nobody bothered to bring and asked for the sticky table to be wiped, which never happened. The whole packed pub appeared to be single handedly run by one pregnant manager and a couple of young lads . Would definitely not return.

Popped in to have a drink on a wet summer’s afternoon. The service was shocking, I stood at the bar to get some ice for my warm white wine, one person serving and another unloading the glass machine who looked at me three or four times whilst doing this. Eventually got some ice! Just common courtesy to acknowledge someone at least. Went up for another drink and it gets worse, the greeting that was given to three people who walked past was so unwelcoming, then the staff were being shouted at in front of customers and then joked about with regulars. Will not return, unprofessional, rude, uninviting, and expensive

Where to start…. Poor service as soon as we walked in. We checked before attending if they had Gluten free food, told they did. We order, only to be told that several items were not GF…. So we change our order. Food comes and it’s no GF and given the wrong meal. ( this isn’t a fad, it’s a medical thing given my body is genuinely allergic to gluten) We tried several times to tell staff but seems they like to party at the bar rather than check on customers food. Not once through our meal did they check if we needed anything or if everything was ok. When they came to clear the plates we pointed out the order was wrong. The male shrugged his shoulders and said “ well you still ate” yes I did, because after a 14hr shift at work and meeting friends I was ready for a hot meal! Given we live in the village too, we like to support local businesses, however given the poor attitude and inattentive staff, I can safely say I will avoid this pub! I’ll stick to the good food and service at the castle inn or fox!

The sign on the door said "legendary roasts" they were not lying. Really delicious food, good service and good value. The 1st time we've had a Sunday roast there so I don't know it it's always this good but the Yorkshire's with little bits of crisped carrot, the greens were spiced and the gravy had incredible depth of flavour without being too salty. The cooking shows talk about elevating dishes - exactly what we had here. Exceptional cooking with expertly balanced flavours.

We have been staying in Corfe Castle Village and chose this restaurant for a special evening meal because the traditional decor looked gorgeous and (unlike the crammed place opposite) there was ample space around the tables for our two dogs. Our whole party (3 generations) found their food delicious and the staff were pleasant and professional. We had made our booking in person, stopping for a drink (loved the Old Porter) and noticed that the man serving at the bar, George, was very hard-working and helpful and knew all the regular customers’ names. We’re very grateful and will definitely come again on our next visit.

We’ve had dinner at the Bankes Arms 3 times this summer and absolutely love it! Corfe is a beautiful village and at its best in the evening I think. Beautiful building, lovely large garden, friendly helpful staff, excellent menu and the food is wonderful. Pub food very well done. There always seems to be a nice atmosphere, people drinking in the bar and an always pleasantly busy. Clean toilets, a must for me! We have taken our two dogs every time and they are always made to feel very welcome, given water and a biscuit. Can’t wait to go back again!

Visited twice on holiday recently. First time pretty good, second time not so. Recommend beef burger and nachos. The shandy battered fish and chips is not only a gimmick, but a gimmick that doesn’t work. I can only surmise that the sugary lemonade in the batter mix burns, leaving you with a partially blackened coating that tastes revolting. Couple this with a thick rubbery fish skin, it makes for a pretty unpleasant experience. Suggest chef visits the Weld arms up the road to see how this dish is created properly.

We walked from Swanage and ordered some drinks here. We ordered the Salmon In white wine sauce and asparagus with fresh vegetables.Allergens and ingredients are listed in the menu. After 30 mins wait a waiter brought out the salmon but was covered in a tomato, creamy coloured sauce .I said to the waiter that it didn’t look like what I had ordered and he insisted that it should have tomato in it ! There was hardly any asparagus and the sauce just tasted of garlic and tomato. It was horrible. Not a white wine sauce -who knows what else was in there . I went into the bar and demanded a refund. Cash was left on our table ,despite them not accepting cash, as a refund. We left hungry . This is a dangerous practice ( and illegal)of serving anything up -as people with food allergies and intolerances are in danger here .

Lovely pub with friendly staff We had planned a picnic for the day and it suddenly started to rain so we joined the queue to try to get tables. We managed to get one of the last ones available which was a lovely table near the entrance by the bar. Lots of things appealed on the menu and the staff were knowledgable about allergens. Between us and the kids we had the salmon & chorizo main, cornflake chicken starter, croquettes, soup of the day and a burger. Everything was yummy but the salmon and chicken bits were especially delicious. There was a bit of a wait but considering how many people arrived at exactly the same time it wasn’t bad at all and the service was nice and very friendly too.

The service was really good, nothing was too much trouble even when it was busy. The children loved the view of the steam train. They deserve a great summer. Thanks again!

Turned up (without a booking admittedly) for lunch on bank holiday Monday. The beer garden was 1/3 full (eight tables already seated). Told to take a seat and the waiter would be over shortly with menus. He never came to the table so we sourced our own. Every time the waiter walked past our table he avoided us. We eventually asked for him to take our order. He’s response was that he had been instructed to not serve any more customers because they couldn’t cope with the orders due to short staffing. Bearing in mind more than half of the tables had already been served and had their food and drink it was difficult to conceive how they could be unable to take drinks orders for 4 tables of 6 people and under. We left.Only Redeeming feature is that the beer garden is nice and has views of the train.Very disappointed

Stopped in for an early dinner Saturday 12th December. The water was delivered to the table with a fly floating in it and then the peas which were part of the veg served with our main were still frozen and even had ice on them. When we went to pay they then had the audacity to charge us FULL price! We will never be back. I had left a review stating this, but rather than management apologising for what was an extremely poor service, they tried to say it wasn’t them and blamed it on another restaurant. I have now added two images, one of my bank transaction showing that this did occur here and the second showing the management response. Anybody thinking of going here, think twice!!

Lovely pub with good social distancing and covid safe. We had a bowl of chips with our beer. The chips were wonderful, so hot and freshly cooked.

What a fabulous place to stay! The building is old and the rooms lovely, nothing fancy, but beautifully done. Staff were kind to a fault and the food was great. Service quick and friendly. Bed was comfortable, bathroom clean and warm. If I had one small issue it was the unbelievably small towels.. ok if your 18 and as thin as a pin ..I am neither of those things! One tiny towel each.. and quite thin ones at that! Overall a fabulous weekend and we are looking forward to coming back next year. Highly recommend this hotel!

We recently stayed here for 3 nights with our 2 children, we had two rooms adjacent to each other and it felt so safe and homely we didn't even close the bedroom doors. We ate at the restaurant on the first night (A Sunday,) and wished we had done the same the other nights too! We just missed out on the roast that looked fabulous..George said he could do a steak(cod) roast and it was delicious. The breakfasts were also wonderful and served by the fabulous Wendy who made sure every comfort was catered for ( I wished we could take her home) The Covid standards/ hygiene was paramount and I know that every door knob and handle etc has been cleaned so we felt really safe. The Pub is really cosy and well decorated and All the staff were charming, we had a wonderful staycation!

Excellent service. Lizzie is lively and certainly makes you feel comfortable and at home. The food is exquisite, a personal favourite of mine, is the smoked beef board. Burnt ends, beef rib, brisket. All melt in the mouth and flowing with juice. The smoke leaves a delectable bark without overpowering the flavour profile of the meat itself. If you are feeling brave or want to stitch up your friends, challenge them to the chicken wings with dynamite sauce. It will blow your/thier head OFF. Extremely spicy but packed with juicy habaneros and scotch bonnets, this delicious home made sauce is not for the faint hearted, but provides hours of entertainment as you try to tackle the inferno.

Came here for food based on good reviews, on a very wet early September evening. I was a bit worried as although several tables were taken, it was quieter than some of the other pubs when I first arrived around 6pm (lots happening in and around Swanage that day so most other pubs were very busy). However, I think it might've been just that because the pub is off the main street, visitors would head to one of the more visible pubs first, so I'm glad I did a bit of research! It soon started to fill up though and I was lucky I had arrived when I did! I ordered the burger, which the lady behind the bar said was a good choice. She wasn't wrong, it was great! Everything appeared to be home made (except the bun and salad of course!) and was delicious. I had a couple of pints of Inches cider (one of my fav's) to wash it down too. It's likely not the cheapest place in town (the burger was £17.95 and the drinks were £5.40 each). I thought the price of the food was fine given the quality, but the drinks were a little expensive. The pub is dog friendly and while I love dogs, the only downside of the visit (not the pubs fault), on a wet day, meant several wet dogs kept brushing past me. Overall, I'd definitely recommend!

Had booked a table for Sunday lunch. Arrived to find the floor was still being vacuumed and only one table was laid and we were the only customers. Gave drinks order then, when brought , gave food order. It arrived between 5-10 minutes later. We were convinced the food had been heated in a microwave, my husband’s beef was tasteless and veg was undercooked and gravy was watery and flavourless. My chicken was a chicken portion not even sliced. When we left about 40 minutes later there were three more tables occupied.

I tried to order tea and scones at Knoll House restaurant today but there was no one who seemed to want to serve us. We asked at reception after waiting for ages at the bar for someone and was told to ring the bell. We eventually found the bell which was a door bell and not easy to see and after waiting again for an age, no one came. We rung the bell for a second time and stood waiting discussing what we should do when a very harassed waitress arrived carrying a full tray. When I asked if we could order she was unapologetic and unpleasant and told us she was unsure if we could have scones because they had been busy with a table of 22. I asked her to check to see and while standing there still waiting I felt the whole experience was now so awful that I didn’t want to stay and spend my money here. This was supposed to be a special treat for a friend and I that don’t see each other often and instead it felt like we were a massive inconvenience and completely unwelcome. I know staffing is difficult and expensive these days but treating people that have come in wanting to spend there money with you like that is appalling. We decided to leave and as we left we told the member of staff on reception that we were leaving because the waitress was rude and we couldn’t get served and even then no apology was given, no attempt to retain us as customers and seemly no concern that two paying customers were leaving and taking there money elsewhere. We had a lovely visit in a very fine cafe in Swanage and will not return to Knoll House and judging by the truly awful service we had today, no doubt this feedback will be ignored.
