The Badger Hounds in Scarborough

We've been staying in Hinderwell for the week and have been three times now, as a family with grandparents, as a couple and as a family just with the child. The beer is good, the staff are friendly and the food is lovely. Not sure you could ask for more in a village pub experience. Well definitely back if we're in the area again.

We have just come back from a lovely meal at The Badger Hounds. We are staying in an airbnb with our 5 month old Puppy in Hinderwell & this place was recommended by the owner of the airbnb. I seem some reviews online that the staff weren’t very friendly, but we couldn’t have had a better experience!! Obviously with a brand new puppy, he’s either really nervous, or really excited in new places, no inbetween! We were greeted by a lovely young lady who found us a seat, but she noticed our Puppy was really uncomfortable being sat under a small table in a darker area, so she moved us to a nice big table in a lighter space. She brought us over some water and treats, and after a few moments he settled down :) Food was absolutely delicious, and we’re so shocked at the price! A drink, Main and Dessert for less than £25 a head!! Brilliant! Think he was the owner but also a really nice guy brought us the dessert menu over, and let us use the bins outside before we went in to put the dog poop in as couldn’t find a bin. Overall lovely cosy pub, great food and super friendly staff to humans and furbabies! Thank you for making us outsiders feel welcome! x

Do not go for the parmo!! I got a parmo on the 4/10/24 bread crumbs looked black and ive been bed bound for the last 2 days never again.

The pizza was overcooked, had hardly any mushrooms on it and the sauce was cheap and sugary. The parmo was greasy and cheap with a small, sad ramekin of wilted salad. Through the night and the following morning, my husband had a very upset stomach, which upset our plans for the following day.

The Sunday lunch here was highly recommended so we gave it a try while staying nearby. It Was perfectly acceptable and nothing wrong with it but we wouldn’t especially make the effort to go again. We felt the drinks (particularly the wine) were expensive which pushed the overall cost up significantly. The staff were lovely with the landlord/barman having a dry sense of humour.

Not used rooms, hence no star rating given. Lovely friendly pub, made you feel very welcome. Dog friendly. Great food. Neck Oil on tap. Outside seating area to front and beer garden out back. Gets busy during holidays. Serves breakfast from 8am on-season. Evening meals start at 5pm. Great location.

Trip Adviser rarely lets us down but oh dear what a disappointment. We had 2 roast beef dinners. The beef was tough and tasteless. It seemed like it had been under a heating light for ages. The vegetables were soggy.This is in an area of good reasonably priced restaurants, I don’t know how it survives .

Stopped off for Sunday lunch and wasn't disappointed with the quality of the food and service. Easy to park and wasn't too busy.

Called in on a walk from Staithes, looked like a nice pub. Ordered food & was very disappointed. Hog pie & peas sounded delicious until it arrived. Pie crust was hard & content very dry, not worth £6.00, Ordered gravy (for a extra £1) when food came no gravy. When asked where gravy was, told by bar staff I didn't charge you for it. Ordered hot beef sandwich & hot chicken sandwich with extra gravy £8.95 each. Wasn't worth the wait or money. Mushroom pizza £12.95, size 10" when came. Calling for a drink is fine but eat here at your peril.

Awful.Dirty,tatty menus,sticky tables,cracked crockery.Food wasn't much better.Poor quality and warm.Huge prices,charging extra for peas with scampi.Wont be going again.

Went for a Sunday lunch because I wanted somewhere that served a traditional Sunday dinner and are dog friendly. I must admit that I ought to have checked out the location a bit more thoroughly as it appears as Saltburn on website but is in fact closer to Whitby. Anyway the pub was clean and comfortable and the menu reasonable. I had a seafood platter as a starter and although I wasn't expecting everything to be deep fried, it was actually very nice. Fairly substantial for a starter but manageable. I chose pork for the main and went for the smaller option. It's good to be given a choice. Meat was cooked very well and time was taken to prepare good vegetables (crunchy sugar snap peas, soft carrot and a cauliflower cheese bake. Stuffing nice and Yorkshire pudding acceptable if a little overdone. Roasties were soft (haven't found a pub yet that serves them crispy. Sadly I had to take a point off because there was no crackling even though it was stated on the menu. Very good food and reasonably priced. Beer was well kept but at nearly a fiver for a pint I think too expensive.

We were staying locally so popped in on 2 evenings just for a drink, tidy looking pub and Guinness was lovely👌

There was nothing wrong with our meals, they were cooked ok, presented nicely but just not what I expected. I ordered the curry of the day with nann, popadom and half rice/chips. The popadom was very greasy and appeared to be a pre-made refried one (sharwoods maybe?) The curry was a chichen breast chopped up and chucked in a bowl of (lidl/Aldi) curry sauce, not a vegetable/lentil in sight. As I say, it was OK and the sauce was tasty but not what I had expected from the write-ups for this pub Partner had the mixed grill which he did enjoy. He has a much smaller appetite than he used to and couldn't finish the chips. The beer prices seemed dearer than the other local pub. But I have already reviewed that hostelry😂

Popped in a few times over our holiday as it was not far from our holiday accommodation. The place looks lovely, but felt it wasn't the most welcoming of pubs. I said hello to one of the bar staff and was ignored. Staff seemed to be moody. As soon as a local came in, they were more friendly with them. Was going to order food, but decided against it after the frosty reception. Very much a locals pub. But a lovely looking pub non the less. Went down the brown cow and staff way more friendly, ended up having a good session in there.

This was our 2nd visit to this wonderful establishment.We went on speck in order to try and get a table for Sunday lunch. We were given a wonderful greeting by the landlord and landlady Cheryl who despite being very busy, found us very nice seats. We were served by a delightful young lady who guided us through the menu describing the dishes on offer like a true professional. The food like our previous visit did not disappoint and was spot on. Can’t wait to go back and would unhesitatingly recommend this lovely pub for a visit and a terrific dining experience.

Nice pub that does amazing roast dinners. Sunday evening quiz was a bonus and good laugh. Staff/owners are lovely people that made us feel welcome. Quiet beer garden to the rear. Ideal location and good prices

The public house is in a good location for visiting the port mulgrave area. The manager is not very forthcoming though, when asked how the food was were complained about the fish and chips and not once got an apology. We were not asked if we wanted more drinks, had to ask for the dessert menu and then had to ask for the bill and get up to pay as no one attended the table

Family trip away and the pub was local so thought we could pop down for some food, first of, they had ran out of a few meals however they only serve food for three hours so surely they should have enough food in for 3 hours? My dad ordered fish and chips and it was extremely small portion for the price, oven baked skin on chips, and oven cooked wet battered fish. We then let the staff know and we had no apology about it or anything. Not 1 person or manager included apologised about this.

Glasses brought to the table with fingers in each glass. Drinks brought and split with no effort to wipe up. Some of the items on the meal not available even though only serve for three hours and we were in after 2 hours service, which were standard items on the menu. Ordered a small fish and chips. Soggy batter oven cooked skin on chips, size for a small infant. Mentioned to the manager Mark who to be honest couldn’t have cared less. Definitely a locals place where holidaymakers are not overly welcome. A place I wouldn’t go again and definitely would not recommend to anyone else. It’s a shame as it’s it’s in prime location but not run to its potential

We stayed around the corner at St. hildas boutique and came here for our evening meal. Wow me and they wife had garlic mushrooms for starters and the burger for our mains. I've got to give it them the burger is up there with the one of the best I've ever had. The portion size was decent, and we both couldn't finish it. I would book in advance as it gets full (that's how you know it's a nice place to eat)

Called in today for Sunday lunch. Having had an excellent evening meal there several years ago. Very enjoyable meal, well cooked lean cuts of roast beef with a good selection of vegetables and yorkshire pud. Just as I like it with plenty of extra gravey. Good beer and very welcoming owner and staff. What more is there.

Lovely dinner, great staff, good food well prepared. Six of us had a post walk dinner. Really welcoming atmosphere.

A quick informal pub dinner. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. We had steak and ale pie and chicken parmo. Pie mushy, not many mushrooms on parmo, chips a bit stale. Our order got mixed up and delivered to another table so we had a wait, but it didn't spoil the occasion.

Went for a meal long wait but worth it. DOG friendly and wonderful meal you will not be disappointed. Friendly atmosphere and well worth for a drink or two. Manager made you feel important.

Popped in on the way back from Saltburn, what a lovely pub, very friendly landlord and landlady. Great service and good drinks. Will definitely be back for a meal soon.

Went for a meal with the family as what we could gather and make out it’s being looked after whilst the owners are away. So service was very slow our meals turned up at different times so x2 people had finished before the others arrived we would have liked to of eaten altogether. However the food was lovely and they were apologetic but really they should have given us complementary drink or a little gesture of their mistake ! I work in hospitality myself that’s what you do ! Also a couple sat aside from us asked for the dessert menus and never got it so they left . We ordered a kids ice cream and was forgotten until we asked for it 20 min later . The place needs some real tlc here and there and the walls are really badly marked and dirty and toilets were not clean at all. For us we won’t return but as I say the food was good.

Definitely recommend. We arrived late at a campsite in the village after a long journey and went into the pub to see if they were still serving food. Kitchen had just closed but the staff were so kind and accommodating and made us a couple of fresh pizzas (which were delicious!!) They even came back out and brought a bowl of water for our dog. Fantastic service and couldn’t have been more helpful. When passing back through we will definitely be back.

Turned up quite late for our stay on the Tranquillity caravan site, just across the road from the Badger Hounds, and even though the kitchen was just closing, they put us together a really nice Sunday dinner. The pub was a mixture of people from the caravan park and locals. Very lively and friendly atmosphere. Nice beers/ales were available. We visited a couple more times during our stay. The staff and landlord all seemed very welcoming and accommodating.

Called in on spec for Sunday lunch on a recommendation and was greeted by helpful staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. Great choice of roast meets and portion size was generous. Gravy and Yorkshire puds were to die for. And the loos were spotless too! Highly recommend.

I visited with my partner in March, we had such a lovely meal and the atmosphere was very cosy and chilled! All staff were lovely and we were made to feel right at home. I had a hot shot pizza and my partner had a parmo and they were both unreal! We will definitely be back to try more from the Menu!

Had a lovely meal it was Tuesday so pizza pasta Parma night. Hubbys pizza was great I have never tried Parma and it was lovely got the smaller portion and it was very ample. good service from staff nice friendly pub x

We were here for their Tuesday evening pizza, pasta and Parma night. The food was homely and served with a smile. The portions were quite big and very filling 😊 Thank you!

Don’t know about the food because I would have felt weird wearing blue plastic covers over my boots as requested by the landlord.

So this pub did look great, had a nice pint of beer. Food looked great. Very smart, everyone was in shiny shoes and fancy clothing. But we were asked to wear plastic coverings on our feet as we were those pesky people who walked beyond car parks. I’m sure it’s great if you arrive in a Merc but maybe not from a walk..

Had two meals over two evenings. Nice friendly atmosphere. The publican was very happy for dogs and children to be present. Even handed out treats to our dog. Pizza and seafood pasta was really enjoyed on the first night. Second night, guiness steak pie and the best chunky chips I've ever tasted. Lovely food. Plenty parking or just a nice gentle stole along the village. Highly recommended

Stayed in Runswick twice now , went here once again + had a really good meal . Fish pie is amazing, all food freshly cooked . Service good . Chilled out place .

Went on Tuesday evening which is Pizza and Pasta night. Had the prosciutto pizza which was absolutely delicious. Proper Italian style pizza, cooked to perfection and have to say it was one of the best pizza's I have had in a long time. If your in the area I would definitely recommend The Badger Hounds. Great food ,very pleasant staff and could not fault it.

Got good reciews so thought we would give it a go. Pasta ok, nothing special. Pizza below average. Covered in acid tasting uncooked tomoto puree.

Food was great a tasted amazing would definitely go back. Great location to our hotel so a little 2 min walk a back which was perfect.

This is a good pub which is clearly popular with locals. We booked on a Sunday afternoon (which happened to be Mother's Day) so the pub was quite noisy, which is to be expected. The menu was quite simple with 3 options for starters and choice of meats for main. The Sunday lunch was excellent and surpassed our expectations. We had a lovely selection of veg and cauliflower cheese and the Yorkshire puds are homemade. They are dog friendly and there was lots of parking in the car park. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Called on Sunday without a reservation. My elderly Mother and myself were kindly showed to our table, and the waitress explained that on ordering a full main course you got the choice of a starter included. I've recently had weight loss surgery therefore only ordered a child's chicken dinner, and my Mum ordered the pork loin dinner with garlic mushrooms as the starter. The food was exceptionally well presented and tasty. Mum went on to order bread and butter pudding with custard for dessert and I had a child's ice cream. Since having my weight loss surgery, I have realised many places of food will not allow an adult to order a smaller portion or a child's meal. A big thank you to The Badger Hounds for accommodating my needs. The service, the food and beautiful surroundings was of a very high standard and will recommend to others what an absolute gem of a place this is. Looking forward to returning in the near future. I would definitely recommend you book , we were fortunate that the staff could accommodate us, but I'm sure as the popularity gains a free table will be like gold dust. Bookings can be made online through their Facebook page, as no landline at present.

Visited this pub tonight just in passing whilst staying in the area glad we did .Nice ambience and friendly service as soon as we walked in and the food was lovely,Starters of Garlic mushrooms and Camenbert cheese board was good but the mains Lamb Chops ,Fish Pie and Cumberland Sausage and mash was excellent piping hot and tasty and good value for money .

Popped in on Sunday without a booking as we initially only planned to have a lunchtime drink. The welcome from the hosts Cheryl and Mark was wonderful and we enjoyed a friendly bit of banter of the jovial variety which was very refreshing in these miserable times. Whilst stood at the bar our taste buds were enthused by the very attractive looking lunches that were being served. We decided to treat ourselves to lunch and were not at all disappointed by the food on offer,it was delicious to say the least beautifully served by Demi who was very pleasant and super friendly. Can’t wait to revisit this fine establishment ideally situated near Runswick Bay and Staithes. Should just mention the Yorkshire Puddings were enormous, well complimented by the very nice gravy. All in all a truly magnificent experience and full marks most also go to the very talented chef.

Great service and value for food

Our first time at the Badger Hounds and how impressed we were. The pub is very nice inside, staff very professional and attentive. Food was lovely, two pork Sunday lunches, one regular one small, and an offer at the moment is free starter with regular Sunday lunches. I had a starter of soup which was lovely too. Menu choice is vast and has lots on offer including vegetarian options too. We would highly recommend this place and plan on returning again to sample other dishes. It’s made cosy in the restaurant with the real fire and beautiful decorated throughout.

Dined twice at the badger over our Xmas/new year holiday. Mrs raved about the hotshot parmo on our first visit and then we both had the Sunday lunch which was excellent.... Really good food and friendly service, made us and our little border terrier very welcome and would recommend a visit if you're in the area.. Will be back next year.... Thanks and best regards

Excellent food and great friendly service

On holiday at Mill Cottage, just across the road, returning for our fifth time and have been to the fabulous Badger Hounds each time. Sunday lunch was delicious, plenty of meat served with a great selection of fresh vegetables and of course Yorkshire pudding followed by very yummy dessert 😋. We returned later for the pub charity quiz and what a good turnout of locals who made the four of us so welcome. A great night in a “village “ pub with a great atmosphere. Pizza and Pasta night on a Tuesday served equally great food with a good choice. Thank you to the brilliant, hosts, chefs and all the staff, not forgetting local people for help making our holiday so enjoyable. See you next year.

A quality meal for a fair price. Service was excellent in efficiency, helpfulness and friendliness. The starter was excellent and the main meals of steak and the shredded lamb in filo were superb . This pub is just improving weekly. Have paid much more for less in many places. Loved it and will be back without hesitation.

Ate in the dining area although the bar looked fine. Warm and friendly welcome from the hosts. Food excellent, small parmo is adequate unless you have a large appetite, I didn't know this and suffered with the parmo coma afterwards, in a good way. Good selection of real ale on tap, landlord happy to advise. Oh, and great music playing, just an added extra. Enjoyable evening.

My family and I booked for a Thursday night meal when we stayed locally . Three generations picked meals off the menu and specials board . The food here is as good as anything I have tasted . needed somewhere to have a Sunday Lunch as we were holidaying locally and called by on the off chance they could accommodate three adults, child and a dog. There was a sign to say 'sorry fully booked' however upon asking is there a long shot for a table, they kindly offered us a table in the bar which was perfectly out of the way and roomy. Attentive service and a great community atmosphere, the food was excellent. Thank you team Badger Hounds!

Landlord/landlady lovely people really try to make you welcome. Waitress was quite abrupt to the point of being rude . Meals just pub meals nothing special. All in all, a very nice pub ,

Stayed in the Village on a weeks Autumn break so used this pub on a number of occasions but only dined there on the Tuesday Pizza/Pasta night. Food was good and plentiful and reasonably priced. No issues whatsoever. Booking a table for dining in that week was essential but straightforward and our on line request received a prompt response. No hesitation in recommending The Badger Hounds for just drinks or dining.

This is a wonderful pub. Very friendly owners who really looked after us. I had the best chicken parmo ever (hot shot variety) and it was so delicious that I immediately booked for us to come back the following night. The small portion is enough and the regular is huge but I still ate it. Dog friendly seating in part of the pub. Very well presented. Popular with locals and visitors so do book in advance.

Awesome! Late on a Saturday evening all tables were booked so we sat in the garden with our dogs enjoying a drink. The Landlord took pity on me when I asked for a knife & fork to go with my crisps, & managed to get meals to us. I had the best burger ever served in the UK & my wife had Mango Chicken which she is now trying to recreate in our kitchen. Lovely building & gardens, brilliant staff and ultra fantastic food. I cannot wait to go back.

Had Sunday lunch with sister, mum kids and dog. Amazing food. I am really fussy when it comes to Sunday lunch as a good cook myself and my mums a trained chef so this took us by surprise how good it was. Veg really nice. Beef really good and have extra gravy without asking. Yorkshires were lovely too !

Only dropped in for a drink and even though they were fully booked for food, they squeezed my wife and I in and I was introduced to Chicken Parmo… amazing. Superb service, great staff, excellent chef, couldn’t ask for more.

We were staying at Seaton Hall and the gardener recommended The Badger Hounds and we were not disappointed. Six for dinner. Service, drinks and food were all excellent from starters to sweets. Definitely try the Parmo, my daughter and I had spanish which was so tasty but be warned the regular size is huge! My wife had the fish pie and could not believe how full it was. Grandaughters had "great burgers" and son in law the beef. We had a lovely evening in a nice pub with good atmosphere.

Service could perhaps be warmer and the decor isn’t the best, but overall a really good experience. Generous portion sizes and very good food make it well worth a visit for a meal. Definitely recommend.

Superb Sunday lunch recommend by Serenity camping opposite. Top quality, plenty of meat and piping hot vegetables plus cauliflower cheese and lashings of gravy. £15.25 and a smaller option for £9.25. Had lovely cheese and crackers afterwards with a glass of red which was more than ample!! Lovely selection along with crackers, grapes and chutney. Would defo recommend and will be keen to return in the future.
