The Bacchus in Newcastle upon Tyne

Wow, This place has massively changed since the pandemic.... Gone are the interesting strong dark beers & Stouts, Gone are the customer friendly bar staff, it's sort of become a bland boring place with weak, tasteless, light beers served by staff who appear to be on the autistic spectrum, really poor social skills & very little knowledge of craft ales 🍺😥

It's a lot better than I ever expected with the stunning comfortable chairs and sofa. I never did imagine it could look so good. Staff were people watching to serve in the correct order, so all customers were happy with their wait. It naked a change to see great staff with outstanding observational skills. I will be back

Nearly the most expensive pub I have experienced in Newcastle,for that go to the pub acrosss from the railway station. Rude member of staff who served me. I wouldn't bother,far better on offer elsewhere.

Great beer and atmosphere on match day

A great real ale pub in the centre of town. This place puts the pub chains to shame, good beer and good atmosphere.

Decent range of drinks and a good central location.

Massive choice of beer, amazing atmosphere on a match day, and great place for a catchup any other day. Gets quite busy, so maybe it's hard to get a seat. At the time of posting, they have a 0% beer on drought for dry January.

Can't comment on the food but the service was quick and the beer was good.

Old crowd pub, but good to have a chat even if it's a bus saturday evening with a rugby match on, unlike most of the other acoustic-deficient pubs in Grainger Town. Giving cruise ship bar vibes.

Shocking. Rude and just wanted to close early so refused drinks at 10.30. Never go again

Staff are polite and professional good choice of drinks and plenty of places to sit. Very reasonably priced and is a good place to watch sports as there are plenty of screens and the staff are accommodating if there's something you want to watch. I'd definitely recommend this place.

Great "traditional" pub in the heart of the City Centre. Friendly staff. I was a bit shocked at paying £9.40 for 2 beers, but it has been a long time since I went out in the town. It might make a great Weatherspoons, as it was a right hike to the bogs.

Great pub, always a favourite of mine. Good range of beers. I just wish they'd turn the sound down a bit. You have to shout to your mates instead of chatting to them, which is the surely point of a pub.

Really nice city centre drinking bar, no music means you can actually have a conversation. Be warned, the TV's get turned up way too loud when the football is on.

Great beer. Good bar normally. Quite quiet in there today. Took England v West Indies test match off which I and others were watching England hitting out to set up a 5th day declaration. Instead barman put on an FA Cup game with zero local interest in it. Man City went onto win 4 nil. A few people complained. Nobody was watching the football. 15/20 people left the bar soon after. Great move. I could understand it if say Newcastle was playing. We finished our drinks and left as we are not interested in watching Man City and the loud TV makes conversation hard

Canny old school bar with a muted atmosphere ok for us older generation 50+

Very quiet, in fact my wife and I were the only customers when we arrived very early on a night out. It soon livened up though. Beer was reasonably priced and decent enough. All in all a good city centre pub

No eating, only drink consumed yet another Newcastle establishment with a fine selection of Real Ales to suit all. I have previously dined here and found the food excellent.

A beer for everyone. All styles are covered. The Christmas stout, a sweet 10% option, full of cheer and flavour. Prices are s little higher but that's what you get with quality.

Debe haber pasado por este bar tantas veces, ¡pero nunca entré! Mi esposa y yo amamos la cerveza alemana y mientras compramos en Glug nos dijeron si nos gustaba la cerveza alemana para visitar Bacchus. No nos decepcionó, había Oktoberfest con una gran selección de cervezas de barril diferentes.

This is a spacious city centre bar, conveniently located in the city centre just off Grey Street. There is a good range of beers and a particularly good selection of single malts. Service is friendly and efficient.

Esto fue siempre un pub de 4 o 5 estrellas pero no actualmente. Mi amigo y yo hemos bebido en este pub durante aproximadamente 90 años combinados. Acaba de recibir una pinta de levadura que no se puede beber. En realidad bebe la misma pinta en su local. La nueva directora (30 ish) dio una buena respuesta de los 70: esa es la forma en que se debe probar. Al preguntarle, no sabía qué era lo que significaba la levadura, aunque el barman sí lo sabía. Así que mi compañero pidió una mitad de algo más mientras bebía un tercio más o menos. Ella le cobró por ello, el servicio al cliente, creo que no.

Really good place to go for a drink with friends

Went there before and after the This Is Tomorrow festival. Vibrant, friendly and centrally located place. Takes a bit of finding. Plenty of drink choices.

Bacchus is a popular pub with a decent selection of lager and real ales. No music and no TV. Just chat and banter.

Nice selection of ales and a wide variety of shots. The staff were fantastic and knowledgeable to ensure you got what suits your pallet

Really nice pub. Feels cozy and chilled out. The manager, Alex is really lovely; very friendly and when the card machine wouldn't work she gave us the round for free. All the staff are really nice too.

A little expensive but good selection of beers

Excelent drinks offer. Vibrant environment.Have taken several diferent beers, which are more expensive than in other pubs, but the experience is rewarding.

Great bar and barman really helpful

This is one of the many pubs and bars in Newcastle town centre. Inside it is roomy with nice décor. They have a great selection of well kept ales to choose from with efficient service. Worth a look.

Pre match Blonde Star and another drink at good prices. Loads of choice of every type of drink. Also supporting Oktoberfest with some serious beers!

Been a fairly irregular visitor here for donkeys years so thought I should give it a review. It's very much a Newcastle institution, with outstanding decor and an excellent selection of unusual tipples.

Went here for drinks on Sunday when staying in NewcastleuponTyne. Been here before and once again enjoyed it. Drinks very good and very friendly staff. See you again!

Bacchus is a large and very smart pub. It’s a modern bar but, with its traditional style of furnishing, it has a cosy feel to it.

Great range of beers, comfortable seating, always busy with a varied but mostly older crowd and a bit of a buzz.

We visited here on an 'away' weekend and after good reviews on TA decided to give it a try. We were really impressed, this is a smart bar with a central bar that's well stocked. They have a list of beers on a chalk board and a number that you wouldn't always see. I had a wheat beer for a change, I think it was the Erdinger. The beer are pricey but always happy to pay for quality. The staff are smart and they know their beer.

On way for some food so quick visit this evening - good selection of real ales always well kept - enjoyed the Erdinger Wheat Beer - comfortable seats and helpful staff - will return x

Good range of beers but doesn't do food anymore.

Great pub make no mistake. Gets very busy especially at peak times and definitely when the theatre is in full swing. Has a big real ale following which never interests me no matter where it's served, though the beer in general I've always found to be spot on. As ever, city central prices are astronomical across the board and getting worse. Good location opposite a good curry house by chance too. Not a hipster crowd by any means but worth a look in if you're on a session.

So disappointing looked forward to sandwich and a sneaky one (🙂) only to find 5hey no longer serve food! No wonder it was quiet......what has happened? They used to serve lovely sandwiches and snacks, even their range of crisps was poor ....

This was the ‘go to’ place to drown my sorrows after another Aston Villa hammering at St James’ Park. The main issues I had was the people I met with had been in the ‘home’ end and were in good spirits after another easy, 3 points. No matter how hard the defeat, Bacchus was always a welcoming and hospitable howf. There’s a good range of drinks on offer from the large grand bar. It really is a large and impressive bar, with heavy wood paneling throughout. The bar itself is quite unique in its grandeur. There is always a good crowd in here, but they are mainly in their mid-forties onward, with some youngsters bucking the trend.

Best pub in the north east. Huge selection of drinks. It's not cheap but great quality. Lovely staff

A well priced bar in the City Centre. Regular good choice of beers and spirits. Always a decent atmosphere with the 40+ crowd.

There's a really lively feel about this city bar. They have a very good range of beers for such a high volume joint, and the building layout is great with some interesting seating areas.

Great comfortable pub with friendly staff & nice for lunches. Good selection of well kept real ales which are regularly changed.

Went to visit my daughter who is at university and spent a great afternoon in here. Fantastic selection of beer, cider, rum, whisky and gin coupled with comfortable surroundings and great background music. Will have to plan a view more visits as one of the best bars around.

Hubby loves the draft Peroni here and they make a yummy g and t . Great building / bar great ambience and very comfy seating. Friendly staff one of our favourite bars .

Great for real ales good place to start night out but gets busy earlier on

Having been a Bacchus fan since coming to live in Newcastle in 1987, it is disappointing to see how it is currently operating with overpriced, unknown beer. Why change the old formula of well kept real ale from a mixture of local and regional brewers that drinkers will recognise when they walk in, rather than having to gamble on beer you have never heard of or risk the disapproving looks from the barman when you ask for a taste before buying.

That's what is important to me-good cider. Lots seats and a great atmosphere. Would def go again when in Newcastle city centre.

Keeps on being a bar with loads of drinks choices especially favoured by the 40+ brigade. Blonde Star by Anarchy lives there which suits me fine! Reasonable prices for City centre.
