The pub was beautifully clean and interesting. The staff were amazingly helpful, funny and attentive. The owners were generous and allowed us to park our motor home in their car park. The food was delicious. There were morris dancing and music. Definitely recommend.

Where do I start, well it’s definitely excellent value for money, the staff are amazing, warm and welcoming, the food is delicious, and there are some lovely views outside. I asked for onion rings without realising they weren’t on the menu, the lady who served us said she would ask, when the food came out I was presented with a huge bowl of freshly made onion rings…..now that’s service!!! This was actually our second visit to the pub, previously we had the most amazing mint lamb pie which was the special at the time. If you ever get the chance you MUST try it!!

We went for Sunday lunch. There were 13 of us, a mix of adults, children and 2 babies. Had a little nook to ourselves. You would never know the pub was there without Google. Very rural, but so lovely, oldie worldie and a lovely outside area overlooking fields. Food was lovely, staff were lovely. Cannot fault it in any way, considering there were so many of us. We were lucky enough to be able to sit outside afterwards for coffee, as the weather was warm and the children needed to get outside. Would definitely recommend. Thank you for your good food and good service.

We visit regularly for lunch with friends, including previous Christmases, and this was the first time that we left feeling a little disappointed. We enjoyed our visit but felt that the food let us down. Some of the portions weren’t as generous as usual and the non-meat eaters didn’t feel well catered for. A slice of bread with the salmon starter ( not to mention a prawn/ slice of avocado) and enough warm milk for all with the coffee are small ideas that would have made quite a difference to our perceptions.

We were given a very warm welcome. Our reserved table was next to the cozy open fire. We had a lovely 2 course lunch - plenty of choice from daily specials menu. I enjoyed fillet of sea bass and my husband said the lamb pie of the day was delicious. There was a plentiful supply of well cooked vegetables. Well kept ale accompanied the meal. Good value traditional meal without being pretentious. Views from the newly laid out garden to the rear were stunning - west facing so the sunsets must be amazing. Ample parking which is good as the local bus service only runs once a fortnight!

The Ash Tree is deceptive. Not pretentious just a great pub, with great service and great food for the following reasons: 1. It doesn't try to be anything but what it is - A pub, no fancy banquette seating of "colours of the day" Just a good old country pub, with all the charm that goes with it. 2. It's a Free House so beers and ales to suit all and a fantastic selection of wines. 3. The team are lovely, good fun, polite and always helpful. 4. The deceptive bit - you see the menu on Facebook / the net. Looks good, right, traditional almost. But what you don't see is the Specials There's at least 2-3 starters, 3-5 Mains and 2-3 desserts. And they are worth looking at and trying, e.g. Skate wing, Sea Bass with Samphire, Confit of Duck, Chocolate Delice, to name a few that were on yesterday. All really tasty and well presented and great value. In terms of eateries, this is one of my favourite, in terms of eating in pubs, my favourite by far.

Our pooch felt very much at home here, as did other extremely well behaved doggy patrons on the day.Our lunch was VERY tasty, nicely presented, and good value. The Ash Tree Inn obviously has an extremely good and competent chef.Despite all areas of the premises being busy and full, the atmosphere was one of quiet, serene and happy customers. We arrived as they opened on a Wednesday evening & at 1st we’re not sure but we received a warm welcome & despite being fully booked they had capacity for walk ins, which is great planning on their part. I had pie of the day lamb and mint, my wife the steak which we both enjoyed. Despite being a Wednesday evening we watched as a steady stream of cars pulled into the car park & the Ash Tree Inn had filled up by the time we left at around 7 pm, there’s a reason this is a great pub with great food.

This pub isn’t the most local to us but the hour’s round trip us worthwhile. The service is good, the food consistently great and we keep returning.

This is a lovely location and the food is great. The staff are friendly. However the service needs a lot of work. My group of 5 arrived at 12 as it opened, and were the only customers for a while. However it was 20+ minutes before drinks orders were taken, and then we had to wait to place food orders separately. So it was gone 1pm before we got any food. The food came out in stages and the cutlery and condiments came out last, so we had to sit and watch the food getting cold while we waited for knives and forks. The side dishes also came out nearly ten minutes after the main plates. I realise it’s quite a trip from pub to garden, so my suggestions are as follows: give up on fancy plating and put the sides on the same plate as the main to reduce the number of trips; take food orders at the same time as the drinks order; bring cutlery and condiments with the drinks so they are ready. In case this was a one-off, two of us came for drinks one evening, but waited 20 minutes without anyone even greeting us, so gave up and left. Shame that some very simple issues really left us with a bad impression.

Our first takeaway Sunday Roast from the pub and it was very good. It was Roast Shoulder of Lamb, which as you would expect is a little fatty, bu the flavour was good and all the veg that went with it was really fresh. Cheesy leeks, excellent as was the creamed swede.Easy collection and, yes, will be going back.

Tucked away in the hamlet of Ashburnham, about 10 minutes outside of Battle, is the beautiful country pub The Ash Tree Inn. Set in bucolic splendour this place is more than just your bog standard pub grub. The specials board is loaded with local fish and meat whilst purists will be happy with some classic English fayre. I had steak and kidney pudding, when was the last time anyone saw that on a menu? Magic. Plus reasonably priced.

My wife and I have just had Sunday lunch at this wonderful gastropub. We had pre-booked which seemed to be a necessity considering the pub’s obvious popularity. Our starters were sublime - lobster pieces in a light and crisp tempura batter and beetroot and gin cured salmon. My wife had red mullet for main course (plenty of variety on this menu) and I had the mixed roast. To be picky, I would have preferred the Yorkshire pudding and potatoes to be crisper but the meat was very tender and plentiful. Neither of us could clear our plates, such was the size of the servings. Again, interesting options for desserts - lemon posset and panne cotta finishing our meal off nicely. Service was friendly and efficient and Covid security measures were front and centre.

Family party of one vega, one vegetarian and four meat eaters. They provided us excellent meals taking into account dietary requirements. The vegan emailed in advance to confirm her needs the food was plentiful and of a high standard. They are very dog friendly too and the staff are excellent too.

A nice enough pub and a large, varied menu as long as you eat meat and/or fish but, on the day I went at least, only one vegetarian option - macaroni cheese. The dish itself was fine but come on, this is 2020, provide some choice.

We've been 3 times already in September! Nothing to add to all the positive comments already left but please don't tell too many people! My sister who eats in Ramsay and Corrigan established eateries is still raving about the seafood linguine.

Dropped in or a meal here to see what the venue was like. It’s quite a large pub with off-road parking, 3 separate bar/dining areas, a pool table and dart board. Great place in a good location. The lady behind the bar was friendly, attentive and helpful and the food (we chose the Friday Fish & Chip With a drink for £10.50 offer) was very tasty, well-cooked, plentiful and surprisingly ‘light’ to eat. It came with a with a choice of drinks. It was excellent. The quality of the food was really very good. We also had a chat with the staff who told us all about the live music that has now been introduced to the pub. We will certainly be returning to enjoy one of their events.

A proper cosy old fashioned local pub. It's nice to have three veggie main meals on the menu without resorting to mac cheese or curry which are the standbys elsewhere.

Often visited Battle but this was our 1st visit to The Chequers. Absolutely great discovery! So many delicious choices for breakfast - tasted brilliant! All so good we had to return for a late lunch before we left for home. Friendly staff, excellent service and fabulous food. A great find and we will definitely be back.

We booked The Gallivant back in July for our wedding anniversary but had to move the date to October due to personal circumstances. All the way through staff were very accommodating and were only too helpful in helping change the date and ensure we were rebooked for the room, dinner and morning yoga. Communication at all times was fantastic!! So we at last stayed at The Gallivant and wow what an experience!! On arrival the staff were so welcoming, booking us in and showing us round the place. The shared spaces, such as the bar the reading room and restaurant are completed to a really high standard and the bedroom was really comfortable with a fantastic shower!! Pre dinner we enjoyed a few glasses of lovely English wines and then had an excellent two course meal which was cooked to perfection! We slept really well in a really cosy comfortable bed and woke to a relaxing yoga class with Katie followed by one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. Real shame we only had the one night… I could have easily stayed all weekend. Thanks to all the Gallivant staff for making our stay so memorable!! What a wonderful experience!!
