Lively and busy pub with efficient, friendly bar staff, serving drinkers and diners in and outside (cordoned off pavement) on a pleasant, leafy, Victorian, terrace, Bethnal Green (within 10 mins walk of the tube). The Approach Tavern, is a large old boozer which serves as a great venue for family & friends of all sizes. The pub grub is inexpensive and the furniture is a little ramshackle, but that’s what makes it so amenable to larger family gatherings. For a family of eight we dined and drank from 19:30 to 22:00 on Sat 22/06/24 for just over £300.

The approach is an amazing pub, with an eclectic mix of customers. It's often a young crowd on a Friday and Saturday. It's also incredibly welcoming to families and dog owners. Sunday's open mic is under publicised and is usually really good. Bar Staff are always friendly, hard working and eager to serve. Great place to drop in for a pint and while away an evening with the friendly locals.

Rude egotistical staff who appear to think they are celebrities, appalling rudeness from them today in a half empty/half full venue with really uncomfortable seating. We will never set foot in this place again. To be told to get out of my way by someone carrying food whilst I'm standing in front of the only menu, on the wall and when I do move he opts to walk toward me rather than now go behind me (I'm reading the menu) to make me move again rather than take the shorter route behind me and then tell me I won't forget this, I could go on, it got worse.

A real shame, as this pub seems lovely. However, we booked a table for a roast at 6pm on the Sunday - the kitchen allegedly closes at 8pm according to the website - and there was no food.

Visited this modern pub type place for a work farewell. Sat outside as was a lovely day- seating area was fine though became crowded and noisy but that seemed to add to the vibe. Inside the bar staff were friendly and service was quick. Inside seating area was a large quiet space , plenty of space. Food service was a bit hit and miss as servers did not know which table had ordered food. Pet friendly.

Five of us went for Sunday lunch. Those who had the pork belly enjoyed it, my lamb was overcooked and tough (no redcurrant jelly either) and one of us had small plates which were ok. The best bit of the meal was the draught beer and cider. Overall it was rather disappointing. Friendly staff though. Not worth the money. I went here a few years ago and it was very good. Perhaps Sunday lunch in covid times is a stretch too far.

Really disappointed with our experience. We went for my boyfriend’s birthday and had booked a few weeks ago. When we got there, they had no record of our booking (despite my confirmation email) and we had to wait about half an hour outside for a table. We then had to wait about 40 minutes per round of drinks and then we weren’t able to split the bill between us (despite the fact only 2 of us had food) because it was “too busy”. Was very disappointed and they should have more staff on to cope with demand. Splitting a bill isn’t a big ask at all. I don’t think we’ll come again unless the service improves massively- and I think this is an issue with management rather than the polite staff who were in duty. Good selection of drinks and the food was fine, but the service ruined the experience.

I live fairly near to this pub and I love the atmosphere, they have a great selection of beers and wines and the staff are helpful and lovely. However my only criticism of the place is the vegetarian food. It could be a bit more imaginative. Not every vegetarian is a vegan. Not all vegans want a healthy choice etc. Given I come here a lot it would be nice if there was more than just a veggie burger and an occasional other choice. That said the choices I have had have been nice if a little pricey. The veggie roast however is BAD. It costs almost the same as the meat even tho it’s obviously inexpensive to make comparatively. It’s usually a nutroast which by their nature are dry (I’ve been told there was a wellington on menu once but I’ve never seen it). The gravy isn’t really gravy it’s like a thick yellowish paste. A roast is quite dry as is especially without meat and especially THAT gravy. A simple veg or onion gravy would work so much better and not make the meal so bone dry. You’ll have my custom for many years for drinks but I’ve vowed off the food.

Our meals covered most of the menu, from roasts to vegan pie, fish and chips and a bean and haloumi burger - all good. A proper ol pub with a modern attitude. Give it a go.

I discovered this pub while on art exploration on the annual Condo initiative. Midweek at lunchtime, it was relatively quiet, but I can imagine it is popular in the evenings and weekends, plus there is a large outdoor terrace at the front. The art gallery upstairs is excellent, as is the bar and the barman was very friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend the food here as we never got any. We arrived at 20:05 and was told by the very rude barman that the kitchen had closed at 20:00 even though it states 22:00 on their website. He didn’t even recommend anywhere else we could go for food. Fortunately one of the other customers did. (Italiana in Cambridge Heath Road very good by the way) We will not be returning to the Unapproachable Tavern again.

Went there for a Sunday roast and it was disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad roast but it just didn't release any endorphins that I usually get with a nice roast! I had chicken, others in my group had beef, nut roast, and lamb. The meats were perfect and delicious. Everyone was happy with their spuds and yorkies too. The veg was carrots and green beans and some cauliflower. Oddly, the cauliflower was coated with some turmeric, and it jut doesn't really do the thing. However, perhaps its not the cauliflower but the weird gravy that they serve the roast with. It did not taste like gravy, it was really thin and had a hint of vinegar maybe? I am not sure but we agreed that it did ruin the roast.

Sunday dinners are a yardstick by which one measures pub food. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking: a. The Yorkshire puddings have to be right. b. There has to be plenty of good gravy. c. The roast potatoes have to be crispy. In all respects the Approach failed to tick any of these boxes even though in other areas such as the atmosphere and quality of drinks, it scores high. If you are paying £14 for a Sunday roast it has to get it right. The homemade mint sauce was OK though.

For the last 2 years staff members have been hugely disappointing. Moody, edging on rude, inefficient, highly unprofessional and just simply c**p at what they do! Which begs a question - if you cannot wait the tables - what are you really good at ? Food has been disappointing a few times and it did land on our lap one time when a very inexperienced waitress was left serving in the peak time - Sunday lunchtime. A lovely interior, roomy and cosy at the same time, perfectly located on one of the nicest streets in Bethnal Green, a stone's throw from Victoria Park. The Approach offers a great selection of ales, wines and beers, and a fairly decent menu. However, the establishment is crippled by the ennui and listlessness of the staff, who proudly display these dubious qualities as a badge of honour - serving customers seems to be the very lowest of their priorities. I regularly come here as I live locally, and it's a fantastic place for all the reasons listed above, but every time I kick myself for giving them my custom, as the staff seem far more intent on chatting among themselves, collecting glasses and emptying the dishwasher than actually serving drinks - I just stood at the bar for five minutes while the three members of staff served other customers, after which two of them glanced at me before disappearing in opposite directions to perform the aforementioned vital duties; when the third finally condescended to serve me (the other two seemed to have beaten him to it in terms of finding excuses not to), he then became so distracted by an fascinating discussion of the day's events with a fourth member of staff who'd just pitched up to help out with glass collection, that he forgot what he was doing - when he was good and ready to get back to the tedious job of serving, he looked down at the pint he was holding like it was some sort of alien artefact, then walking down the bar offering it to everyone else waiting before he got back to me. I'll likely keep coming here, but someone needs to give the staff a smart kick up the backside which they seem to have crawled into.

Whilst waiting, overheard a decision by the staff to not serve a guy who seemed to be talking to himself. To be fair he was. But.... is this a pub? Or a annoying place where you are judged? He was doing no wrong. No commotion. So they didn't have the bravery to deal with a pub customer who just wanted a few drinks. The staff are manifoldly more miserable than that poor chap. And besides that's what pubs are all about. The staff are miserable. It's a shame cause it's was a good pub. Two awful staff ruin the atmosphere so easily. Beer was okay though.

We visited just before Christmas for my partner's birthday meal. We booked a table for 12 in advance. My request for a table to be set prepared for us was declined as we weren't having the set Christmas meal. The fire was lit which was welcome on a very stormy evening. The pub was quiet as London tends to be immediately before Christmas. There were only 3 mains available - bean stew, chicken or pollock. Unfortunately there were only 4 portions of chicken available which was a shame because it was what most of the group wanted and those that we did order were delicious. We shared starters - trout salad, rice balls and ardennes pate - all good. The starters were a bit pricey at about £7 each. The bread portions at £2.50 a throw were a bit meagre. Unfortunately 3 of the pollocks arrived about half an hour after the other 9 meals. The waitress had forgotten to type the correct number of dishes into the computer. The beer and the wine were all enjoyed. We skipped pudding. The bill came to £300 including some drinks. We asked the waiter if we could have some discount as some of the fish had been so delayed - e.g perhaps they could not charge us the £10 for the bread. He said he had already requested a discount for us and request was declined and not possible. So overall judgement - this is a lovely local pub, the kitchen produces very tasty food but you are left with a feeling that customers are not valued. Perhaps they make enough profit for the year on their busy summer evenings and don't feel as if they need to try too much. A shame.

Went on a Friday night after work, a really comfortable pub, good selection of wine and beers, easy for a large group to get a table together, and also was ok for a friend's toddler, not an easy mix to accommodate in London on a Friday night. The only downside was the food, not cheap, and although good sized portions, all came out a bit overcooked, chicken was very dry and fish overdone, don't know if just a bad night for the kitchen or whether kitchen could not keep up with orders as was busy. will try again, but will think twice before eating there, maybe they are better organized on Sundays.

Took my wife for Sunday lunch last week. Simplicity of choices- beef, pork, chicken, lamb or vegetarian. I had the pork and wife had chicken. Both were plentiful plates and EVERY element (meat, veg, potatoes, sauce) was well cooked and tasty. We shared a crumble dessert which was deelish. We will return!

Molto caro e pieno di fighettini mezzi finocchi, spacciatpri sempre a portata di mano. Per chi beve birre tradizionali non è il posto adatto. Non vendono Stella Foster Heineken Peroni....Se vi serve cocaina è il posto giusto!

We were introduced to the pub by local friends and visited for Sunday lunch. We all had different selections; roast beef, chicken and pork and all were excellent with plentiful amounts on the plate (superb pork crackling) and the main courses are around £12 to £15 each. The pub has a very nice atmosphere and a rustic decor. If I were to be critical of anything, there didn't appear to be many staff working and we actually cancelled our desserts after waiting quite a while for them. Overall though, I'd definately recommend a visit.

Great Pub! Nice atmosphere, wide choice of drinks and food. Staff might be a little bit pleasant, but the rest is all ok!

We have been coming to the Approach for over a year and whilst the location is great and the food is brilliant - the staff need to cheer up! We haven't been aknowledged once in all the time we've been coming here. The staff look like they'd rather be anywhere but here! They're moody and tetchy and it seems as if you're interupting their day by asking for a drink. If you want good food, definitely come here. If you want a friendly local pub - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Ripped off and bitterly disappointed with the Olympic opening ceremony night. They advertised they'd be televising the ceremony, but switched the tv off and booted everyone out half way through. On top of that, the meal was the worst I've had in London - £14 down the drain. I will never return, and I highly recommend a boycott!!

Lovely little pub with a nice atmosphere. Can get very busy but always with a friendly crowd. Food here is delicious - unlike a ko of pubs they do things right and don't rip you off. Ordered calamari last night, they came out piping hot, crispy and not chewy from being overcooked and with a great side sauce. Tats all iask. But sometimes in the uk that Iis far more than you will get! Decent selection of beers too. Well worth a visit if you are nearby.

I first went in the Approach in 1969 and it is a mercifully and rarely unspoiled pub. We used to take our children there when they were smaller and you had to sit outside; then a grandchild who was allowed in. So over the years we have had lots of meals there. The current management do a very high quality Sunday lunch - masses of happy meat with crispy roast potatoes and well cooked vegetables - for just under £15.Most information say that food is served up till 4.30 on a Sunday. On the blackboard it says '4ish.' We ordered our main courses at 3.50; the barperson looked at the clock before accepting the order. It arrived within 10 minutes, which was great. At around 4.20, hearing us talking about pudding, a member of staff said that we should check at the bar because she wasn't sure if the kitchen was still serving desserts. I went to the bar and after a few minutes the same woman came behind the bar and we asked her. She went into the kitchen and came back spreading her arms in a negative gesture to indicate that no desserts were available. I said to her that it seemed to me that if one had ordered main course, it wasn't really acceptable, when the meal was finished, to deny customers the ability to order a pudding. 'Well, the kitchen closes at 4', she said. I pointed out that that wasn't clear at all and she went on arguing. I just pointed out that arguing with customers wasn't acceptable. So there are two lessons here. First of all, it is plainly wrong to close the kitchen for desserts before all customers eating main meals have had the opportunity to order desserts. It would be perfectly possible to go round and warn people. Secondly, managers of any service provider who argue with customers don;'t deserve to have customers. I certainly won't be going back to the Approach for a meal unless someone confirms that these things have improved.

I've been going here for years. Its current management is among the best its had after a bit of a dip.It can get very crowded but when it's fairly quiet it's terrific. Its beer is well kept and the London Pride and Seafarers are outstanding. The jukebox is free and must be one of the very few in the world offering The Fall's "How I wrote elastic man".

Outside the tourist commonplace, I’ve found it because of my sister who lives nearby.Real Ales are the attraction here. As they don’t do the “commercial” brands.Menu is really nice. Great food! There is the gallery upstairs also!

Total disaster of a restaurant. Food was poor quality, understaffed and decor was rotting away. No longer a restaurant by the looks of it.

Great staff and products but very grubby furniture. Toilets dirty. Very dark as the light bulbs are 50% not working. Worst franchise I've encountered.

Visited this place on Saturday night and they were letting in groups of six not from same family’s. Groups of friends. The ladies toilet was disgusting sick in the sinks that had not been cleaned up so you couldn’t wash your hands as many people as you could get in the toilet. Management need to check on this establishment.

Lugar legal, vale a pena conhecer mesmo sendo um pouco agitado demais e as vezes o atendimento acaba ficando meio conturbado. O preço não é tão bom mas é tudo bem gostoso.

On the 27th of October at 18.40, I stood at the counter and waited to be served. There were two staff members who looked like they were busy, so I waited. After about 5 minutes, I made eye contact with the man and he did not acknowledge me or even explain why there was a delay. I left afterwards and went to Starbucks where the service was by far better. This was the Black Sheep Coffee at Jubilee Place Canary Wharf.
