I'm a little uneasy about this one, because the star system doesn't do it justice, but there were some points that warranted the effort to give a review. First off, we were caught off guard looking for somewhere to eat and not pre booking anywhere, and this placed popped up and seemed perfect for what we were after. So firstly, after a few tots, in the winter darkness, it's quite hard to find, and the front door was closed (as it should be in hindsight because it leads straight into the bar and downstairs dining area), so is also easily mistaken for being closed, when it's open. Alas, we found it and let ourselves in to be greeted and seated even though they were busy and we hadn't booked. A really quirky, family run place was clear to see, and watching some dishes pass from the kitchen to other diners, we were happy with our choice. We ordered drinks and food, it speedily arrived, and on the whole was good quality tapas, the prawns were a bit over done and tough, the chorizo was maybe a little underdone, but generally was a good tapas experience. The problem for us, was the repeated signs for paying in cash, cash is king etc, of which I fully agree with and appreciate, but seems more back street Chinese takeaway approach kind of vibe, but none the less we asked for the bill, and with a bank just a few doors down decided to go and grab the cash to help out. The bill was around £70, so I got £80. We duly placed the cash on the plate, and handed over, reasonably expecting the plate to be returned and we could leave a tip as per our discretion, but no, the plate was not returned, and no further embrace was sought after, only until we decided to get out coats after accepting we weren't seeing our change, for the greeter being midflow in conversation with the waitress to stop in his tracks with a stern finger pointing towards us, asking in clear earshot, "have they paid?". A sour taste on an otherwise ok but non the less not mind-blowing experience. I don't like leaving a negative review on small businesses, but this place can't be doing that regularly.

We have been here several times before and we like the place but our latest visit was rather disappointing. I have to clarify that The Angel isn't cheap because seafood can't be cheap and we are totally ok with that. But if you pay £200 for a meal, it has to be special and that doesn't relate to the food alone but also to the service, the ambience and the whole experience. It started on arrival when the staff didn't even show us to our table which we had booked but simply gestured to where we should sit. The table hadn't been cleaned and was sticky to the touch. We then waited a long time and no one came to ask what we wanted to drink. Not all tables were taken, it's a small place and there were quite a few members of staff around - so no excuse really. We went to the bar only to be told to remain seated which is unacceptable. When we got our starters, tapas selection of seafood which were all expensive ( for example six scallops for £30), they came without anything not even bread on the side. When we queried this later, we were told that we had to ask for bread (so, basically saying: our fault!). Sorry but again, for a restaurant at that level and charging the prices they do, not acceptable! I expect to be asked not being blamed. As main we had the seafood paella for 2 and that was even worse. Not a lot for 2 people, hardly any seafood, mainly rice, not even any veg in it. The rice was hard at the bottom and stuck to the pan so we couldn't eat all of it. We have cooked paella many times at home and know what a good one should look and taste like and it was nothing like that. Like I said in the beginning, we generally like the place and its quirky ambience so will give it another go but this recent experience was not good, particularly for the money we paid.

A Nautical Affair at The Angel: Lord Nelson's Culinary Ménage à Trois Ahoy, adventurous gastronomes! Prepare to embark on a culinary voyage like no other at The Angel in Ludlow, where history meets hilarity in a tale of love, scandal, and scrumptious fare. Nestled within the quaint walls of what was once witness to Lord Nelson's legendary ménage à trois, this establishment has transformed from a rendezvous of romance to a haven for food enthusiasts. As you step into The Angel, you can almost hear the echoes of Lord Nelson's charming laughter bouncing off the ancient walls. The ambiance is a delightful blend of classic elegance and cheeky allure, much like the man himself. The restaurant manages to capture the essence of its scandalous past while maintaining an air of refined sophistication. The menu, much like Lord Nelson's love life, is a diverse affair. Start your culinary escapade with the "Nautical Nibbles," a selection of appetizers that promise to set the tone for the evening. The "Admiral's Artichoke Dip" and "Mistress Mussels" are particularly enticing, each bite leaving you longing for more, much like the historic trio's entanglements. For the main course, the "Love Triangle Linguine" is a must-try. This pasta dish weaves a tale of flavors, with each strand telling a different story. The combination of seafood, scandalous spices, and a hint of rebellion makes for a truly memorable dish. The dessert menu is where The Angel truly spreads its wings. The "Sweet Seduction Soufflé" pays homage to Lord Nelson's ability to sweet talk his way into anyone's heart. The velvety texture and sinful sweetness make it a fitting end to this culinary adventure. The service at The Angel is as attentive as a lover's gaze, with the staff seamlessly navigating between history and hilarity. They manage to uphold the restaurant's romantic reputation while ensuring that your dining experience remains light-hearted and enjoyable. In conclusion, The Angel in Ludlow is not just a restaurant; it's a theatrical experience that brings history to life on your plate. Lord Nelson's ménage à trois may be a thing of the past, but the legacy lives on in the delightful concoctions served within these walls. So, gather your own trio of companions and set sail for an evening of laughter, scandal, and utterly scrumptious cuisine!

Sadly, we were disappointed. The food was interesting although limited choice.. lots of fish but not much else and very few vegetables. The hake was delicious but presented with tinned tomatoes and a tiny dish of spinach. I had scallops but again only a tiny dish of spinach, although I have to say that the potato with olives was delicious. The desserts were disappointing - chocolate profiteroles were smeared with dry chocolate mouse not sauce; the rum baba was soaked in sugar syrup with a mere hint of rum and a small spoonful of mascapone. When charging £25 for a lunch main one expects the place to be at least clean and 'presentable' - we were not comfortable there. 'Grubby cafe' was nearer the mark. The tables had two 'bright and cheerful' printed paper table-coverings which didn't properly cover the table, and were torn and stained - not much more than functional. I would have expected white tablecloths - my commonplace experience on the Continent. The upholstery was grubby - stained and impacted by how many hands? The Angel was recommended by friends as I wanted a special meal, but sadly, we left disappointed.

Highly recommended due it being owned by the couple who own neighbouring Cicchetti so we booked for dinner. This is more Spanish than its Italian neighbour. Pavement seating available but we opted to eat in - very quirky interior was welcoming but cases of juice etc were visible under sofa seating & although it’s off the wall decor & bric a beach is part of its appeal it needs a tidy up. Some stuff was totally inconsistent with a Spanish theme? My main was described as monkfish with clams so I assumed it was a piece of monkfish with baby clams in a sauce so I asked the waitress for vegetables such as new potatoes and anything else - she was nonplussed and did not describe the dish just offering tomatoes? In fact the fish is served on a skewer on a bed of tomato sauce. It was filling and delicious - the vegetables I asked for would not have worked with it - something she should have known. Nonetheless the food was excellent & this is a restaurant with its own personality & well worth a visit

At 9pm on a quiet Thursday evening in June after signing in and asking for a table for drinks...just the two of us....and there were free tables and occupied tables they said ..we have stopped serving .. bonkers! We had a much nicer friendlier experience at The Church. Wouldn't recommend this rude hostelry.

We are regular visitors to the Angel, for the food, the wonderful Tash and Martyn's wit and entertaining manner. Never disappointed and love the different dishes dependent on what Martyn has tracked down and turned into a delectable dish.

Finding The Angel made our day, in fact it was so good we’re booked to go back tomorrow. The gambas and mussels were exceptional. Martyn supervising the kitchen and Tash front of house provide the perfect combination for a relaxed enjoyable lunch. Marian and Nick of Chester.

If you like absolutely stunning food served by an occasionally sarcastic chef this is the place for you. Our kids love his cuisine and we can thank him for their varied palate and love of good food. Martyn is a genius with seafood and has never disappointed in the more than 15 years that I have had the pleasure of being his most grateful customer.

A friend and I lunched today and despite the fact that we hadn't booked received a friendly welcome and were shown to the upstairs dining room and given a choice of tables. We enjoyed a glass of the house white whilst we waited for our scallops to be cooked, and they were delicious. Simply cooked in olive oil, garlic and herbs and served with fresh crusty bread, we really enjoyed them. The Covid regulations were followed, the staff were friendly and efficient, and the chef, who we met later, chatty. We enjoyed our lunch, and will return.

The Angel, Ludlow is a ‘serious’ place, for ‘Serious Diners Only’. In fact The Angel, Ludlow, is the self proclaimed Serious Diners Club HQ. This is attested to in signs within the restaurant (Restaurant, NOT a pub), as well as the website and many reminders frequently given on the venue’s Facebook page. I have been curious to know what the definition of a Serious Diner is, and what it might take to be considered for the coveted membership of thre Serious Diners Club. Following my recent experience booking a Sunday lunch with a friend at The Angel, I have deduced the following, which I will share with you: 1) SERIOUS DINERS ARE PUNCTUAL: Have you ever been 5, 10 or even 15 minutes late to a reservation before? If so, then I’m afraid you are not in the Serious Diners Club. “But it wasn’t my fault, there was traffic!”, I hear you say, or “My toddler had a sudden aversion to shoes and it took us 10 minutes to leave the house”.....it doesn’t matter. The Serious Diner doesn’t use unforeseen events as an excuse for not being on time. 2) SERIOUS DINERS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED: The website tells you the restaurant (NOT a pub) closes at 5pm, you call to book a table at 2:30 and are helpfully informed on the phone that they do, indeed, close at 5pm. You call to inform the restaurant (NOT pub) that you’re running late...”that’s fine, but just so you know we stop serving at 4pm”, “no problem!” you say, naively. You arrive, late - as expected by both parties -, and are told the Chef won’t cook for you. Are you surprised?? Yes?? Hahahaha, you amateur!! A Serious Diner would never rely on information given to them by a seemingly credible source. A Serious Diner second guesses everything and everyone. A Serious Diner has the unexpected expectation to expect the unexpected....FACT. 3) SERIOUS DINERS DO NOT DINE: In this third, and final, twist of the puzzle in what it truly means to be a Serious Diner, the answer may surprise you (and if it does, you must already start the path of acceptance that you are not a Serious Diner...see point 2). If you are really serious about dining like really REALLY serious, you will never approach a restaurant (NOT pub) expecting to be served food. Yes, this does seem completely bat s**t counter intuitive to the purpose of going to a restaurant to our simple, regular diner brains, but the Serious Diner knows not to expect to eat, they are unfazed. They simply move along, holding on tightly to their Serious Diners Clubcard hidden in a secret silk-lined pocket of their Club issued trenchcoat. A Serious Diner doesn’t concern themselves with the frivolities of food consumption. They are in “The Club”. So, do you think you have what it takes to be in the Serious Diners Club? Do you? Do YOU? There’s only one way to find out, book a table at Serious Diners Club HQ and remember, if you eat....you’ve failed.

Incredibly rude staff. When we arrived, there was no greeting just a “I don’t think he will cook for you as you are late” (granted we were 10 mins late at no fault of our own). When the chef arrived, the waitress said, “do you want to cook for them?” And the chef said “if you arrived for a 2pm train and you arrived late would it wait for you” this was said in a be try aggressive manor. He then mumbled something under his breath. Dispite being told on the phone that they stop serving food at 5! I understand we were late and if he had just told us that we are too late sorry, we would have understood. Poor customer service!

A great little find in Shrewsbury. We were looking for a quick bite to eat mid afternoon and peaberry's was one of the few places still serving food after 3pm, that wasn't a major chain. The service was great, friendly and welcoming. The food was reasonably priced & portions a good size. We will go back next time we're in Shrewsbury.

I’ve just had the most delicious Sunday roast. I’m vegetarian so opted for their nutless roast - full of wonderful seeds and other yummy deliciousness. I ate late for a Sunday (7.30pm) but the joint was jumping and no wonder the food is well cooked, plentiful and fresh - even that late I enjoyed fresh Yorkshire puddings, vegetables and roast potatoes that tasted fresh out of the oven. I’m only here for a few days but hope to get back here to eat again. The food is wonderful if my nut less roast with all the trimmings was anything to go by. I washed it all down with a large glass of their Transylvanian Pinot Noir - perfect! Service was impeccable, friendly and efficient. Highly recommend
