The Angel on The Bridge in South Oxfordshire

Great pub this, had a drink on the terrace on Sunday & today we had some dinner there, both had the steak & ale pie & it was smashing. And I must add, the young lady behind the bar was very pleasant & informative.

Yet another FIRST CLASS experience at the Angel! Charming welcoming staff , superb food and fast efficient service . Could not ask for anything more . We will be back .

Stopped here for a light lunch. The ham and cheese sandwich was delicious and big, the fish chowder was creamy and strongly flavoured. Excellent bread from a local bakery. Service was pleasant and prompt - even bringing water to the table without asking, which makes a nice change. Other peoples’ food looked great and would tempt us back for a full meal next time we visit the town. Only thing that let the place down was the ladies’ toilet which could do with a refresh - definitely looked a bit grim.

We came here for an early dinner after exploring Henley On Thames. It was my birthday and we were looking forward to some pub classic grub to finish the day. The location and atmosphere were lovely and staff were friendly. However, the food was disappointingly average. We had fish and chips, and, the chicken and leek pie. My fish and batter was very soggy and undercooked. The chicken pie was very dry, not much sauce and the gravy was very bland. The food filled a hole as we were so hungry but we both didn’t enjoy our meals for what we paid. And left feeling like we wished we had chosen somewhere else. We will definitely go back in the summer for a drink but not for food.

Popped in for a bit of lunch on a Saturday…friendly and attentive service, decent food quality and (semi) sensible prices for portion size. Nice selection of ales too. We didn’t have a view as such and besides it wasn’t the best day for it, but some tables look straight over at the Henley Bridge and Thames, so well worth asking for a window seat on that side.

Well, location is brilliant but the pub no so, shame 😕

This is your typical British pub.... Ticks all the boxes best of all character/atmosphere... Definitely recommended.... One star less as there is slight room for improvement.... 😉

We spent a day in Henley and finished the day off here. We arrived without booking to have dinner, but slightly before the others came so we could have a table (I recommend booking). The food and service were great, I would definitely recommend.

This pub is great for a casual night out and good food. Lovely views over the river and a short stroll to the town centre of Henley. Recommend the home made pies

I have been to the Angel two or three times per year for the past 15 years, a convenient place to meet up with an old friend. Good points - The food is always good, no complaints there and the staff were friendly and helpful. Bad points - the restaurant is noisy, especially when there is a large group dining and the toilets are disgraceful. They have always been unacceptable, they were poor when I first went there 15 years ago and have steadily got worse. Not so bad for a quick visit to the Gents but yesterday my wife said the Ladies was dirty and the toilet seat was broken. Quite inexcusable for a pub which is always busy and must be profitable. This is 2024 and not 1960 when pub toilets were usually a dark and dirty place.

Attentive barstaff, clean, warm welcoming public house. Only gripe tables by fire were booked for a group for 7pm group never turned up until gone 8pm and no-one else was allowed to sit by the fire, a suggestion to the owners, if table reservation persons haven't turned up with a 15minute period maybe offer the table out to the paying customers who are in the pub already spending money!

Always a wonderful experience. I had the vegan burger this time, and it was so nice. I'm not vegan, so I was impressed with how good it tasted.

Lovely pub on river Thames, with cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. Decently priced although dishes we had I feel should be few pounds less given their size and quality. Over all good experience and would consider to come back and try other dishes.

Lovely little pub by the bridge. Only stopped for drinks. Plenty of outdoor seating but small inside so if looking for table arrive in good time! Else very atmospheric due to this. I imagine would be great on a nice sunny day.

Perfect lunch spot on a bitter, cold, damp winter's day. The fire was warm, service was excellent and the real ales and fire in the old public bar were picture-book perfect. IF you want period charm done well in super-friendly surroundings, this is your place.

Popped in mid day on Saturday, shown a table straight away. Had the pheasant special and my son had the mushroom and mozzarella pie. Delicious. Super creamy smooth mash and rich juis. Will be back again even though I live in Southampton..

We did not make any reservations as we arrive at Henley-on-Thames by accident. The young waitress was very friendly and after talking to her supervisor, we were offered a table but we have to make sure that we finish our meals before the next reservation. The food is great, atmosphere is great, it was a rainy days so we have to find a shelter and we ended up here for lunch. Thanks to the young friendly waitress(sorry i didnt take down her name) that makes us feel relax having our lunch there. Really recommended, even if you just need a place for a drink.

We liked it so much we came twice. Once to eat outside on a quiet Friday lunchtime with lovely views of the river and again for Saturday lunch when it was busy, busy, busy but still had excellent food and service. Great beer too!

Absolutely gorgeous pub. Fortunately it was a sunny day so we managed to sit next to the water. Such a lovely atmosphere and view whilst enjoying a drink.

The roast was delicious and very generous. Service was fast too and the location of the pub near the river is lovely. Just be aware it is a bit pricey but imo worth it!

Pub molto vecchio proprio sullo sponde del fiume. Abbiamo mangiato 2 volto - uno più uno snack e poi più strutturato e ci siamo trovati bene. Buone the birre. Molto caratteristico e staff molto gentili e disponibili.

Excellent food at reasonable prices. Staff very helpful and pub is dog friendly. Based on the river, it's a great location. I would recommend.

Olde worlde pub. Grabbed a coffee here. Great view of river. Would be nice in the evening with fire roaring

Nice location, ok food, terrible service. 40 minutes after ordering, we still didn't have our plates. Only after we checked with the waitress did they bring 2 of the 4 dishes we had ordered. Both were lukewarm, almost cool. After an additional 20 minutes, they still hadn't brought the missing 2 plates. Went inside to ask for them. They said they were going to check what was going on. 10 minutes went by, and the manager approached our table to say there was a mix-up in the orders queue. After an additional 10 minutes, the plates arrived. No apology, no compensation, nothing. The waitress left the dishes at our table and left. Very bad service.

Big place, lively inside and clean, 2 bars but only one open when we was there, no problem with the food, I had the chicken tikka Masala, it came with 2 poppadoms, garlic naan and chutney, it was really nice, hubby had the steak & kidney pudding but said he would prefer something else next time as only a little meat in them but still tasty, staff was very nice but not many in as tables were left uncleared for a while, we had to move stuff of ours to sit in the window table, will be visiting again next time..

Super overpriced for the food. Recommend coming only for a plate of chips and beers. Ordered a Caesar salad without any meat (since they apparently couldn’t put the salmon from the other salad on top) and was charged £18 for a tiny bowl of iceberg lettuce, a few croutons, and 4 anchovies. Lovely location but just not worth the money for anything other than some basics.

Really good Haddock and Chips and Burger, good selection of ales and spirits and very friendly waitresses. Excellent views of the river.

What a fantastic setting! You can enjoy a drink while sitting right on the Thames. Service was friendly and good. There were a few swans that swam past us at less than an arm's length away.

Working out of town and popped in for a pint or two. Riverside beer garden, busy,limited selection of beverages also £7 a pint ....I've paid more but I've paid less in a plastic pint.

Ordered two sandwiches (£10 each) the filling was perfect but what let the whole experience down was the bread, both sandwiches were rock hard and stale, personally I will never eat there again after this experience, staff were friendly.

A must go-to place when you're in Henley. The food and the service are fantastic with lots of vegetarian options.

This venue is great for a relaxed lunch by the river. Lots to see and great food. The only slight downside were the steep steps leading to the tables.

Amazing pub both inside and out! It's cosy inside with different nooks and crannies. Outside, there are plenty of tables perched overlooking the river. Service is great too. Outside has its own small bar with plenty of bar staff meaning you don't have to wait to be served. The food has also impressed when I've been there. At other places, often when you order a steak baguette, the steak is so tough you have to eat it separate to the baguette no matter how hard you try to eat it together. That's not the case at the Angel! The steak was so tender it was a joy to eat.

Lovely setting quality of food Great the bread Lovely and fresh but just far to thick impossible to eat couldn't get it into your mouth so you had to deconstruct it to eat thinner slices please even our men struggled to bite into it and made it very very messy

Appallingly bad, £17 for fish and chips. Fish was dry and tasteless. Everything served , from the fish, chips and peas came out of a frozen packet, the curry my uncle ate look like something the cat threw up, even our desert of ice cream was poor quality . Toilet, also looked filthy and the smell coming out the back of this restaurant as you walk by is terrible, like old fat and over cooked meat. It's not the first really bad meal I've had at the angel, but thought I'd give it a second chance, we won't be going again, unless it's just to have a pint of beer. For that purpose, it's a great pub, lots of character, friendly staff, beautiful views, but the restaurant is beyond bad.

Lovely location, had food here before which was nice, but come on, £11 for one point of Guinness and a pot of peanuts??? Ridiculous

The fish and chips was good, and we appreciated that they served half portions, but we couldn't get a cup of tea - or coffee and what an elder member of our group desperately wanted was a cup of tea. The riverside garden staff sent us upstairs after dinner: 'They might serve coffee upstairs!?' However on arriving at the upper level we were told by an important lady that coffee was being served only to people who had eaten upstairs. At this point all the coffee shops in Henley had closed, only restaurants were open and we had already eaten at The Angel.

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid this place is an absolute rip off. Really expensive even from a London perspective. Brakspear making record profits so the excuse the costs have gone up doesn't wash.

We had the Sunday Roast chicken, beer-battered fish & chips, scampi & chips, and seafood chowder. Everything was great, nothing special. However, the seafood chowder was slightly too salty. Plus points for the atmosphere beside the river Thames.

Great place for a sandwich and soft drink watching the river go buy but felt the cost for 3 sandwiches a salad a 4 soft drinks at £70 expensive as the bread was very dry and not that tasty ? Quick service and excellent position we will be back again but felt the cost and the food was not good value

Good pub food, delivered promptly. We had a table by the waters edge. We enjoyed a very pleasant couple of hours.

Good food and service but for a Saturday night it was quiet. The Rewind festival was taking place which may have resulted in the lack of atmosphere.

Met friends not seen for a long time for lunch here. Weather miserable so sat inside at a pre booked table. Service was good, same for food. However, just before leaving, visited the ladies, oh my word, I don’t think I have ever been in...

Popped in for a quick drink and bite to eat. Only had a sandwich and some chips wouldn't class as a full food review hence only 3 stats however chips were good, no coleslaw for the ham and cheese sarni which was a shame as the cheese made it slightly dry. Service was good. Food came out in good time and the downstairs bar got busy but didn't have to wait long before being served. Excellent views and great atmosphere. Would love to come back and try more food as what I see coming out of the kitchen looked very appetising.

Great burgers and pints in a magnificent spot! The riverside deck isn't smart but the location and service are just what you want.

The location was nice and clientele was a mixture of locals and tourists. We sat outside overlooking the river. Drinks were served in plastic glasses and the Guinness was not that great. Food was OK and price was what you would expect of a tourist...

Lovely atmosphere x friendly staff

The Angel is, as the name suggests, on the river and the area alongside the river is crammed with tables to allow the most people possible to enjoy the views. It does mean the area isn't generous on space and you could be very close to others but we went on a weekday afternoon so wasn't peak hours. The area was bar service so you check your table number and order at the bar, this is then delivered to your table. Food was good, I liked that they had a good vegetarian option (leak and feta pastry) and that they offered mains in a smaller portion for a reduced price ideal for lunch. Staff were friendly and helpful but not always the quickest to clear tables. My main critique is the toilets outside on the riverside were not clean. That being my only negative, I would recommend visiting here and enjoying the views. I did not go in to other areas of the pub so can only comment on this area, but do know it is famous within Henley-on-Thames.

Food truly gross, even chips luke warm and chewy. Drinks served in plastic cups. So disappointing. Trades on a great location, offering disgusting food, microwaved. Toilets smelly and dirty too…

Their lovely terrace by the river is the highlight of that typical English pub - the vibes were immaculate: do really recommend on a sunny day! The food was good, big crush on the dessert: our table ordered almost every desert on the menu and they really tasted deliciously. Food is home made, go Henley!
