The Angel on The Bridge in South Oxfordshire

I’ve eaten here a couple of times and can’t under why people think the food is good or even adequate for a waterfront restaurant in Henley . The skinny fries and olives work but Caesar salad, sandwiches are barely edible. The salad dressings are literally cheep generic Lidl type smother the food and you spend the whole time scrapping the nasty stuff off . There is no reason why the food can’t be made with more class and care. Hire a chef that has creative ideas and use proper ingredients. It’s akin to a Wetherspoons meal, you walk away unsatisfied and feeling a bit sick . Great place for a pint and chips but they got an inbuilt crowd of visiting tourists so no care goes into the quality of food

Great location but food isn't good, they don't do takeaway for boaters and the cups are a very bad quality plastic which leaks a plastic taste into all the drinks.

My wife said the Sea Bass fillet with crushed new potatoes was the best she'd tasted. My pie was pretty good too, and with good beers and great service with fabulous views.

Popped in for a couple of drinks whilst visiting the town for a few days. Lovely cosy place with hundreds of years history to absorb. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food looked amazing 🤩

Great place for a spot of lunch

Decent food and service. Didn’t appreciate the background music plus TV with the rugby sound being both on at the same time.

Excellent service and food. The sea bass was delicious and so was the hazelnut ice-cream. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food!

Nice location, got a table straight away, the menu was average, the food was average, and the service was average. At the bar, they love to talk and forget about the clients, that's okay most of them seem young so completely understanding.

60th birthday party held on 18 January 2025. Landlord Mark, Manager Bradley, Harry and the whole bar team provided a great venue for this event which all ran very smoothly thanks to their hard work. Very much appreciated by everyone who attended especially the birthday girl. Food and service were both exceptional.

One of the most beautiful places I ate at. We ordered a beef burger. It was very delicious and the quantity was sufficient. Our table was next to the fire.

9 of us went to this gorgeous riverside restaurant for our Xmas friends dinner and well wow! A very warm welcome from amazingly friendly staff, but the most wonderful thing was the meal I honestly don’t think I’ve eaten such an enjoyable meal in years! I’d like to thank you all for a superb meal and a great day it was wonderful! Will 100% be back very soon x❤️

Lovely place but I tripped on the stairs when I arrived and it was rather embarrassing! No free drink offered! I decided to go to the Little Angel instead!

Overpriced, greasy food served with a side of guilt, courtesy of cheap, live-in labour. If you’re looking for value, keep looking—this place is where your wallet gets lighter and your stomach feels heavier.

On this trip, two things conspired against us: major roadworks in Henley, and a temporarily disabled wife. Unable to find a close enough parking space, I phoned the pub to cancel my booking, explaining my wife’s poor mobility. The landlord said, don’t cancel, drive one more time around the town and give him time to move his car from his personal space on the slipway. Everything worked out splendidly, and we had a marvellous meal in a beautiful place, with brilliant service and, of course, a prince among landlords. One final point, the Friday night mussels were the best I’ve eaten, even though I spend at least a month every year on the French Atlantic Coast!

Booked a table but it was in the corner of the bar and very crowded with people drinking. Food was good but they did tell me the quiche was gluten free (which it wasn't when I asked about the pastry)

Had been before and sat on the terrace overlooking the river. This time was inside but still a nice view over the water. Pie was excellent. Fish batter is a bit greasy but overall very tasty. Always friendly service.

Amazing food and excellent service. Mark has this place running on rails. The food is fantastic great value and they are also dog friendly. You were made to feel really welcomed, loved it!!

Mark and his staff are incredible, the food excellent and beers well kept. The fact the pub is on the river and the views are the best of any eatery in Henley is just a bonus.

Travelled for 3 hours on a Thursday to Henley and found a fab looking place on the side of the river, the board outside said food and drink served all day. We went in and were told it's only all day on a Friday, so we left, no food, no drink. Please change your boards outside!

Awesome. Google says that I am in the TOP 5% of Pub Reviewers so safe to say I've been a few. This is a great little pub. I imagine this gets very busy in warmer weather and on weekends but we came for lunch Thursday and there was plenty of space. Food can be an awfully fickle thing to review as it really comes down to personal taste. But in my opinion the Fish and Chips I had here was perfect. Thin, crispy batter, flaky white fish and delicious tartare sauce. Also the lemon wedge was so juicy. Plenty of chips and peas too. My daughter had the small Chicken Caesar Salad and was equally happy with that. Great ambience and very courteous, capable staff added to the experience. Love this place. Highly recommended and if I am in the area again I will definitely visit again.

Well, to start, The guys behind the bar, Nothing short of perfect hospitality hosts, The we bar iitself, Authentic is the only way I can describe it, beautiful, Now, most of all, as an Irish visitor to the town, The Guinness here, the flow is constant, in turn, the beverage is nothing short of the taste of Ireland, I give the Guinness a happy 10/10 Please visit this we place. We celebrated a birthday lunch at the pub. Speciality appears to be pies and our steak and ale was very tasty. Followed by bread and butter pudding with custard made for a nice lunch out. Pub was quiet as it was a Monday. Old traditional pub beside the River Thames. They also have a bar with the full drink selection so something for everyone. Worth a visit if in the area. Just revisited and again a lovely lunch with Thames views and great friendly service. There is also seating beside the Thames and a bar close by. A revisit in Oct 24: service friendly, menu has a good selection. Place was full so ensure you book to reserve your table. Food tasty.

Lovely pub, staff were polite and attentive, and it was lovely sitting outside by the river on a sunny day. But £16.40 for two pints (Amstel & Brakespears) and a bowl of peanuts - no thanks!

Really liked the Angel on the bridge when we visited our daughter in Henley recently. Nice atmospheric old pub right on the Thames. Food was good and staff were helpful and friendly. Plenty of tables outside by the river to sit and drink although I think they only serve food to the inside tables. I had the mushroom and mozzarella pie which was really nice. Desserts were a little pricey for what they were. Very dog friendly. Recommend a visit if you're in Henley though.

Lunch with my Wife and dog. The pub is dog friendly everywhere. The staff are wonderful. The food and drinks were top quality in my opinion. I would unreservedly recommend to all. ENJOY!

Lovely pub, great setting and service. We called in for Sunday Roast around 3pm, but sadly they'd run out so we just had drinks and went elsewhere. Shame as we were really looking forward to eating there.

Always a favourite our others to come here before we go home. Always good staff. Views of the river are always a lovely reminder of how beautiful Henley is.

Traditional and quality riverside pub with a vibrant atmosphere, offering superb views across the Thames from the spacious terraced outdoor seating area. The location alongside Henley bridge with superb views over the river has to be best in the town and must be surely the pub's greatest asset. Bar snacks available to enjoy and a decent selection of ales, spirits and of course Pimms! Pub meals include fish & chips, homemade burgers, sandwiches, steak baguette, chicken fillets, sausage & mash, salads plus much more and some top quality delicious sweets and traditional puddings. Highly recommended to visit here.

I recently met my friend and her mother at The Angel pub on a lovely Thursday afternoon. With the weather being so pleasant, we opted for a table outside by the river, which was a fantastic choice despite the busy environment. The food was standard pub fare, but I appreciated the option to order small plates instead of large meals. I tried the salmon Niçoise salad, which came with a generous half salmon steak—perfect for a lighter lunch. However, the seating arrangement left something to be desired. Our table was situated in a narrow walkway, making it challenging for my elderly friend’s mother to navigate in and out. This could be an issue for others with mobility concerns. On the plus side, my friend, who doesn't drink, was thrilled to find a selection of 0% alcohol beer on tap, making it a more inclusive experience for her. Ultimately, there's nothing quite like enjoying a meal by the river on a sunny day, which made the outing enjoyable despite a few minor inconveniences. I’d recommend The Angel for a casual lunch, especially if you can secure a more accessible table.

Had pleasant evening with mediocre but acceptable food. The staff were pleasant and helpful. However the evening was spoilt by the belligerent attitude of who I assume was the manager, although he failed to give his name. Having been a regular boating customer for over 50 years, and having had no previous problems, I was made to move my boat having already retired to bed. The staff were aware that we had arrived by boat but failed to mention anything regarding our mooring until after we had paid our food and drinks bill of £120 by which time it was completely dark. The manner in which he addressed us was not pleasant and was actually aggressive.

A beautiful location offering both inside and outside eating and drinking. Much bigger than it looks. The food is good and the service great. Lots of parking.

Typical and pleasant place on the edge of the sifted river. Almost with my feet in the water. And we eat well even if it's touristy. To recommend

Sat outside looking over the Thames so a great start to a good meal. Food came exceptionally fast. Only thing I would say is that the Chicken Caesar could have had a bit more sauce. Liked the inclusion of the anchovies on top. Wife had haddock and chips which was cooked really nicely. Nice idea to have ramekins with olives, nuts, scratchings etc to buy on the bar. Spend included olives and a drink each.

Really good place, has always been our favourite. Fall or summer. Good food, great ambiance, good outdoor seating and fantastic vibe. Friendly staff definitely adds to a great experience.

Fabulous prime location by the river but the seating is a bit shoddy and could be so much nicer. Food was good as was service. Hated having Pimms in a flimsy plastic cup!

Very popular with tourists :-) but just great if you can get a seat outside by the river and watch the boats go by

Poor experience. Service was very functional to say the best during the whole meal. But after 1.5 hours into our meal for 8 people they started asking us to leave the table for the next booking. We said we’d pay our bill and leave but they proceeded to cause another 3 times in the next 10 minutes which was nothing short of rude. Then when we did leave we finished our drinks outside and no one arrived to sit on the table, so we forded to leave for no reason! Work on your service!

The location is always going to be a magnet on a good summers day. The food menu for lunch is very good, pub classics and sandwiches. The service was very efficient, and the staff friendly. There is a large outside area next to the Thames, with lots of tables, no green area but dog friendly.

Always a decent pie to be had at the Angel on the bridge. Lovely staff and decent ales. Can be tricky to find someone to actually find you a table, but we've never had a bad meal or beer there. And let's face it. There is no better place to sit than an ancient pub overlooking the Thames. Go there and enjoy .

I recently had a highly disappointing experience with The angel on the bridge. I ordered fish cakes, expecting a fresh and delightful dish, but what I received was far from that. The (frozen) fish cakes and lacked the quality one would expect for the price charged. It felt like I had overpaid for a substandard product that wasn't even freshly made. To make matters worse, the customer service was abysmal. When I called to address my concerns, I was met with rudeness and indifference. The representative I spoke with seemed uninterested in resolving the issue and was unapologetic about the poor quality of the food. Overall, this experience was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I would not recommend The Angel to anyone seeking quality food or decent customer service. Save your money and go elsewhere.

We had lunch here on Saturday. Had beef burger and cajun chicken and chips. Presentation didnt look fancy at all, but the taste was great. Burger patty wasnt dried, it was juicy and pleasant to eat. Cajun salsa also tasted great. I like this pub's food. They focus on substance than appearance, no compromise on the quality of the food. We will be back to try other dishes!

The Angel is a perennial favourite of mine when in Henley. On Regatta Tuesday it was busy but still managed great food and as always some of the best ales in England.

Terrible experience, My order was taken and paid for, but the food never arrived, Because the staff who served me were not concentrating on what they were doing, RUTH was too busy cuddling her fellow staff to properly process my order, When I asked for a refund it was given in cash even though I had paid by card, If this is Brakespears flagship pub in Henly they need to up there game

Only gave it 1 star as you can't give a zero Ordered food at 5pm, first order in, it was not busy, RUTH took my payment but didn't send the order through as she was too busy cuddling her fellow staff to care what she was doing I asked where my food was 45 minutes later and was told that there was no order for my table I asked for a refund, given in cash not on my card,this happened to another customer who was over charged, seems a bit strange in this technical age Avoid the place As Brakespears flagship pub, perhaps they need to sort the staff out, some basic customer training would help, Ruined an otherwise nice day

Just sat outside for a drink on a Friday evening. The place wasn't busy and the view over the Thames is lovely. Just a bit disappointed by the plastic cups and wished it was glass.

Recently ate here for dinner. Very nice restaurant by the Henley Bridge and by the water. Food was delicious, however the meat in our burger wasnt cooked right, and I had the Fish & Chips and got sick. The taste was still good though.

I picked the Angel for accessibility as I was meeting a friend currently experiencing mobility issues and on crutches. I had noted this on the booking form and I was contacted by one of the staff to say they had reserved a table for us in a lower part of the dining area, so with just two steps from the pavement outside. On arrival we were shown this table, which was perfect for us, and in a nice quiet area to be able to chat. The food was excellent (especially the seafood chowder starter and the salmon nicoise and broccoli and Stilton quiche. The service was very attentive, but not intrusive, and one of the young ladies even stood guard outside the Gents which my friend had to use as the Ladies was up a number of stairs! All in all a very enjoyable experience and on we would not hesitate to repeat if we get together in Henley in the future. Thank you to the staff for your cheerful and helpful nature.

Fantastic location by the river Thames. You pay more for it, but you can't beat the location. The bar maids were fantastic, very welcoming and friendly.

Tasty food with beautiful view.

On a rather wet and dismal afternoon, we finally got down to the river and found the Angel; a rather bright light and a dark day. Once again the staff were lovely and cheerful and the pub really gave off a more up market feel, but the people were all very friendly. As expected due to the weather no-one was enjoying the outdoors on the banks of the river, were there was quite a bit of outdoor seating (by way of a door on the side street and then walk around the side of the pub). Hade a few beers just chatting to the locals - wonderful! The Guinness was excellent as was the Brakspear.

We booked a table of 8 for Sunday roast @ 1:30 but by 2:00 they were sold out of all roasts before we had put our order in. The menu food and service was good but unacceptable to run out of all roasts when that is the mainstay of your Sunday trade.

Average food, poor service, good location

There is no doubt the setting is amazing. The food when it arrived was also good but we didn't get our main courses until an hour after sitting down. One would expect a place such as this, in an attractive setting in Henley-upon-Thames on a sunny Saturday in June, to anticipate being full and staff the restaurant accordingly but they didn't. We didn't really get an apology either, more an explanation that the terrace is full which is why we waited an hour for our food. If a restauarant can't cope with being full then it is not being managed very well. It was such a shame, as it is a picture perfect place
