I don't usually write reviews but feel compelled to after attending a function this last weekend. The setup was lovely, staff great as could have been considering, and DJ wonderful. Unfortunately all that doesn't matter when the food was so horrid and the GM was running away from any responsibility. We were served RAW chicken, the veg was raw too, even though not everyone received veg. The food was stone cold and the evening buffet appeared to be frozen in places. We asked to speak to the GM who should've been on top of things, in this case damage control, we were told by the waitress he couldn't be found. Cowardly if you ask me, no wonder they only have a 1 food hygiene rating, I think they deserve 0. In my opinion the chef and GM need sacking.

Rambling old place with loads of history some fun quirky rooms. They are now making a big effort with breakfast, which was an excellent spread of quality food. Great for our cycling club trip.

The hygiene rating here is poor so won’t eat here until jt improves but did see a post on Love Thame saying that the bar was amazing so walked into Thame to give it a go and have a drink. Came in through the back way. Saw outside tables a mess and finished drinks not cleared. Throughout the passage we saw overflowing bins and laundry baskets in the walkway. Debris and rubbish scattered all over. General feeling of neglect. Went to the bar, no one serving. Saw a sign saying men’s toilets were out of order. Walked out and went to the cross keys.

My 2nd time at the Spread Eagle, even more disappointing than the first. I stayed in room 11 I believe it was, where the nearest wall socket to the bed is on the opposing wall near the bathroom. Where there is barely any cold water from the sink and where the shower head is millimetres above my head - and I'm only 5ft 10 on a good day. The owner tends to regurgitate the same excuses when replying to these reviews - reckoning that being a 16th century building it will have some quirks. A poor justification for inadequate rooms. The £34 steak I had for my tea was pretty terrible. If it was about a third of the price I'd be half impressed. The location is really handy though, a stones throw from some restaurants serving some proper food.

Professional, great set up, helpful and an all round lovely person. Thanks DaveCDJ, will definitely be calling you again.

I don't normally write a negative review but this meal was such a disappointment. Lovely staff, nice decor statement building.. but.. the menu was limited. They ran out of chicken and most of the menu was chicken. There is a supermarket nearby so no excuse there. They charged £ 15 for a salad of feta, onion and tomato and the soup was basically Ratatouille. Hopefully this was just a blip but I would ask some questions before I ever went back!

If you’re unfortunate enough to have a gluten intolerance don’t eat here. They offer a gluten free bun with the burger BUT the accompanying chips are not gluten free!! Burger with salad does not appeal on a cold, wet November day! Very few main courses to choose from which are GF. Warm beer and a very small glass of Diet Coke did nothing to enhance the experience.

Called in for lunch around with my wife at 1.15 on market day having been attracted by the Mediterranean lunch menu posted outside. We were shown to a table and given an A4 sheet of paper headed “market day lunch “ with a few basic plates of food listed at £10 each. I asked the waiter if we could have the menu listed on the board outside and he seemed rather confused until I mentioned the Mediterranean set lunch. He returned with the said menu and asked if we wanted drinks. I ordered a glass of wine and a pint of cider which was delivered shortly afterwards. After about 10 minutes he came to take our orders. We continued to enjoy our drinks when the waiter returned to say he had passed our orders to the kitchen but they had told him they would only cook meals from the “market day menu “. As, by this time, we had been waiting for around 25 minutes, we said that we were leaving to get a meal elsewhere. I made it clear that I was not paying for the small amount of wine and cider we had consumed. He was neither apologetic nor seemed to care. As we left so did 2 ladies at an adjacent table for the same reason. They clearly didn’t need the lunchtime trade and were happy to write off 2 drinks left by us. What a strange experience!! We went to the Rising Sun and had a great Thai lunch instead of the Greek one planned. We will certainly give the Spread Eagle a miss in future.

Dreadful meal, food not as described (kleftico it was not, instead 6-7 boiled potatoes lightly seasoned with a few tiny bits of meat, all slathered with an indeterminate brown sludge) , and the main course (priced at £20/head) was so small we thought we’d been sent a starter by mistake. Despite being advertised as gluten free, the subminiature meal was served with a gluten containing supermarket naan. Staff were pleasant enough but said they didn’t have the authority to deal with our complaint, and said the manager would be in touch with us the next day. Perhaps unsurprisingly, two days on and we’ve yet to hear from him. Afterwards we asked some locals whether we’d had an unusually bad experience at the spread eagle. We were told that no, it’s always dreadful. And the decor is also grim, a B&M does Versailles vibe. Avoid!

Two night stay with friends for a weekend. Arrived at the location and found the car park at the rear of the building where you have to pay £5 a day to park. Not much other parking in the area due to busy high street so I understand why they charge but you pay enough for the room so feel it should be free for residents. Enter the reception staff really nice and welcoming. Walked through hotel to get to our room and it’s then you realise how dilapidated the place is. Building is very large and old, with lack of investment clearly shows as the building is grubby, I’d say all the ceilings in the public areas, stairwells landing and even rooms had water stains and in lots of places falling apart. Carpets worn, paint work grubby and stairwells dusty and grubby. Got into our room which faced out into the picturesque high street. Looking out the window the sash windows are in poor condition, paint flaking off and falling apart. Room was ok condition ok, again bit tatty but must admit the bed was very comfortable. We had a thunderstorm on the Saturday which brought with it lots of rain clear leaks in the roof as drips in the shower coming from the ceiling. Our room had stains on the wall, the bathroom was clean but the grout was grubby and tired. Shame the bar shut at 11, there was a few of us in the bar and fancied a couple more drinks but staff wanted to go and it was shut at 10:30 so went to the pub over the road open until 2am. The breakfast was nice no issues really unfortunately they ran out of soya milk for my friends with allergies. The hotel could be amazing but for the price we paid this isn’t worth the money. On it’s web page stated “which has been meticulously restored and designed to provide a unique stay” There a few rooms done up and we were able to get in and have a look but even they were suffering with a leaky roof. The property needs a total renovation but I can imagine this would run into millions. It’s a shame it’s got into such a poor state as it could be an amazing place. Would I stay again, I’m afraid for the price no But that’s not the fault of the staff just the condition of the hotel itself.

The Spread Eagle was all and more we expected. From check in to check out. Usais greeted us with a warm and welcoming smile. Took our details efficiently and got us to the room. The room was splendid with French doors to a well kept and beautiful garden with a bench and table. Whilst it was a shared space it had a feel of being your own secret garden. We had breakfast the following morning and it was delicious. My husband said his eggs Benedict’s Hollandaise sauce was the best he’s had. There was a private car park with a small daily fee. The location is central to the village with many pubs and shops within an easy stroll. Thames itself is located in a great area to hop over and see Oxford and Blenheim Palace. Do yourself a favor and explore a stay at the Spread Eagle.

Booked a last minute night's stay through Secret Escapes and are glad we did. Ann on reception made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived and took good care of us throughout our stay. Yes, some parts of the hotel are slightly dated/in need of a lick of paint, but our room was spacious, clean and we had the best night's sleep on a splendid super king! My only reason for 4* and not 5* was due to an error in the breakfast delivery to our room (despite filling out a food form on arrival) and the gentleman who served us dinner, who wore his mask under his nose, touched my cutlery to move it and breathed exceptionally heavily over us (not the standard we expected during a pandemic!) Otherwise, we enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant and relaxing stay and I'm sure will be returning.

Went here for family Sunday roast. The decoration of the pub is very nice and fancy. The toilets are some of the nicest I've been in (when you find them in the bowels of the pub). However it becomes apparent that this veneer is a veneer! The food sadly doesn't live up to the expectations of the furnishings and is in fact perfectly ordinary. When we went it was clear they were short staffed with one person running around managing all the tables. It is a shame that with all the effort on surroundings that the food hasn't similarly upped it's game.

Visited with friends for drinks. This place tries hard but it fails badly, not because of the staff who try hard, but because of the ridiculously small bar serving area where the staff collide with each other to bang out the ambitious cocktails, but also the crazy inappropriate decor of faux Louis IV furniture and weird prints of goats in fancy costume. It just doesn't fit and promotes an uncomfortable atmosphere. Also diners lined sat in rows like a 19th Century poor house. The manager and his staff are far too good for this place. Give it to someone who knows what he's doing - like Raymond Blanc.

Friendly service but very understaffed with long delays to get food. When the food did arrive most of it was not as described on the menu - 'chunky chips' turned out to be oven chips most of which were still uncooked (and not very many of them), pasta was a different type and lacked some of the ingredients stated and the chicken was over cooked. Desserts were not much better as there seemed to be a glut of red currants that night and they appeared on everything - it's ok if you like them, but one of party doesn't and certainly wouldn't have asked for them on her sundae. Sticky ginger pudding was a slice of dry cake with no syrup or caramel pineapple but guess what? More red currants.

We have just spent a very enjoyable couple of nights at The Spread Eagle. The building is lovely and the decor is exciting with designer furniture and interesting artwork on the walls. Our large room was very comfortable with a large antique bed and a modern bathroom, warm and quiet as well. Breakfasts were freshly cooked, with a good choice and generous portions, but our dining experience left us very underwhelmed. Our first choice of starter was not available, and the substitute of mushrooms on a toasted bruschetta, came without the bread being toasted. Our main courses were bland and tasteless and the puddings were not much better, with my Eton mess being unrecognisable. In all, a disappointment, despite the valiant efforts of the manager to try and improve things.

I have known the spread for 55 yrs. this weekend went for sunday lunch with my mother and daughter.far frm its glory days the place has the feel of a pub restaurt that has just had the receivers in to remove assets. a ghost of its former self and with no ambiance at all. tables are formica in the dining room ad not even table cloths..food was average, lunches need more gravy, which we asked for and got. wine glasses cheap and not clean. sadly nothing special. no longer a restaurant but now a pub restaurant, low to mid rangea real shame.

As part of our Wedding Package with The Spread Eagle we were given a 1st Wedding Anniversary Meal for free. The food was delicious, the service was fantastic, very professional and polite. My husband and I enjoyed a lovely 3 course meal, everything was cooked to perfection and the presentation was wonderful!

My girlfriend and I are here last night and after reading a few reviews we weren't expecting too much.To our surprise both courses (starter and main) were exceptional in presentation and taste. There was plenty on the plate too. Huge compliments to the chef. The restaurant itself has very tasteful decor, is very comfortable and the staff friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend.

I visited the spread eagle restaurant on the 14th of May. I was served by a young lady named April, she greeted us and sat us by a table with a friendly smile. Instantly offered drinks and gave us a selection of wines of the top of her head. I had a large Merlot and my friend had a medium Rioja. Our order was taken promptly there was no waiting around for the staff to notice us. The main food came out both of us had the roast beef! It was lovely and we were offered a range of sauces and extra gravy if needed. The bill was not to expensive and the quality was superb! As I'm not from Thame and don't visit very often we were given a detailed overview of Thame! Would definitely visit again, excellent service and excellent food! Very pleased

Don't stay in room 17- not only is it tiny, you have to squeeze around the bed to get to the other side of the room, but it is at the front of the hotel by the very busy high street, and the double glazing looks like it's from the 70s and is pretty inefficient. This wouldn't be too bad if the room wasn't also directly on the main staircase which is very creaky and noisy and where people like to stand chatting at all hours. I didn't get any good sleep at all.The hotel itself is fine but very tired, in dire need of a deep clean and refurbishment. (The staircase carpet was awful and coming away at the edges and not in a shabby chic way, in a "dear god change this disgusting carpet" way). There was some rubbish by the edge of the staircase that was there for my entire 2 day stay. The breakfast was adequate as long as you aren't avoiding carbs and fried food. I asked for poached eggs but only managed to eat a little... Very average hotel breakfast- some more fresh (not tinned) cut fruit and maybe some yoghurts for those not eating greasy (cold) bacon would have been good... The second morning I had a cup of (cool) filter coffee and left. Fresh hot coffee to order can't take much more effort and would definitely give the whole experience a boost. The restaurant staff were fine although quite ineffectual, but the reception staff could both have been a little warmer and more friendly. On arrival, when there is no one else around, looking up as soon as I walk in with a smile is much better than eventually looking up and asking in a bored voice "checking in?"When I was asked if my stay was good, I don't think anyone has ever not said yes, because when I explained I had been woken by people by my room at 0645 (I had been hoping for a little bit of a lie in) she just looked shifty and avoided eye contact for the rest of our encounter. Very odd behaviour. I realise I may have quite high expectations of a hotel, but when I could have stayed in the Travelodge nearby for less than half the price, and I chose to stay here for a little comfort and luxury, I was very disappointed.

Smooth check in, room was nice although a little small, but really we didn't need much space! Dinner in the bar area was really nice, and breakfast was just as good. The Raspberry Bellini from the cocktail menu was a winner! Staff all really friendly. Had been a few times before for Sunday lunch, and wasn't disappointed now we've stayed the night too!

Nice place with plenty of space and slightly quirky decor - in a good way. Nice reliable menu (european style food) and all very good. Service is friendly and prices are sensible. Good spot for a business dinner. All pretty safe and nothing to rock your world - but good quality.

The room we were given was one of the re-vamped rooms. It was, however, incredibly small and the toilet smelled. The receptionist reluctantly showed us to a new room, one that had not been modernised. While tatty, the new room was bigger. The breakfasts were okay, but the evening meal was unimaginative. Overall, poor service is what lets this hotel down.

We brought a groupon for this hotel as it was an excellent location for Oxford. It was well worth it.Checking in was easy despite some confusion over booking. The evening meal was included and was very nice with no hassle over what you can and cannot have. The rooms were amazing I would like to see all of them as they are all different and a bit quirky.Great location for a party or wedding.Overall I would return and pay the full price. One small thing... the toilet roll had no holder .....but if thats the only disappointment!!!!!!!!!

The Spread Eagle does surprisingly good food. The Sunday Lunch in particular is really great and excellent value at £10.50 or £15.50 for 2courses. All of us in our party of four could only manage 2 courses starter + main, and I can eat, but 3 course would have pushing it! We've also eaten there in the evening off the a la Carter menu + again the food is terrific, good portions really nicely cooked. My husband loves the pie, it's always full of proper steak not the mush you can get at some places. The wine isn't cheap but always of an excellent smooth quality. The decor is quite unusual but nice all the same. The waiting staff are friendly+ attentive enough without overdoing it. I would have given it 5* but I don't know why but every time we've been there In the week it's not over busy + for us somehow lacks a bit of atmosphere. I don't know why considering how good the food is - but this does mean from our experience you can always get a table weekday evenings for sure!

Found the Spread Eagle by chance when away near Oxford and searching for somewhere to celebrate our 21st anniversary! Glanced through the window at the super interior and decided this was for us! Stylish and with a warm, friendly welcome we were instantly at home.As vegetarians there isn't a wide choice ... but what was on offer was fantastic ... perfectly cooked Brie, a rich and flavoursome stroganoff with a super bottle of Sauvignon Blanc!Service is speedy and charming - good enough for a 20% tip!A gem of a place ... something a bit different to the run of the mill 'chain' restaurants! We will certainly be back!

There was a group of 6 of us - three couples - celebrating two 65th birthdays and all booked on the Groupon voucher offer. The reception and staff could not have been nicer or more understanding in accommodating our varying needs, different arrival times and setting up a single table for us all to dine together. The furnishings are not your usual bland hotel uniformity and you have to be prepared for creaking floorboards, odd heights, unexpected steps down and aged corridors but all in all a very enjoyable experience. There was no second rate service as we were on a discounted deal and every request was met with politeness. The dinner menu whilst small and simple delivered exceptionally well cooked and presented food with all of us being served together - something not always achieved in other more acclaimed venues. The breakfast menu was one of the best we have seen with dishes such as Eggs Benedict and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs being offered as alternatives to the full English without any additional charges. After breakfast and formal checking out husbands were able to wait in the small snug area next to the reception reading papers and chatting whilst wives went off to check out Thame's shopping offer and were not chivvied to leave or order unwanted coffees etc.

The quality of food was rather disappointing. Rump steaks were have ordered were literally burned to coal. Portions were also surprisingly small as for adults. Not to mention the length of awaiting for food. Generally nice place but some improvements would be very welcomed.

Travelled for 3 hours on a Thursday to Henley and found a fab looking place on the side of the river, the board outside said food and drink served all day. We went in and were told it's only all day on a Friday, so we left, no food, no drink. Please change your boards outside!
